The funny thing is Ironwoods character arc was unintentional the writers wanted to make him the bad guy but made him the unsung hero of the series.

The funny thing is, even if he was planning on abandoning Mantle that wouldn't actually mean the evacuation couldn't continue. They couldn't just suddenly launch Atlas into space without destroying the city so it would have had to be a gradual rise, meaning there would still be plenty of time for the evacuation to continue bringing people up to the city while it ascends.

    • @trueblaze84

I don't think their I intention was to make him the bad guy per say. Rather a good guy who was so focused on trying to solve all the world's problems himself he unknowingly walks right into the trap he was trying to avoid. And by the end he's so distrustful now he'll likely alienate himself from anyone that could help him he'll be no match for Salem and her hords

No. He most certainly IS the villain. The best course was deadass to stay out to KEEP the trust of the people and the world. Instead Ironwood caused MORE division and made Atlas LESS trustable. He mistakes loyalty for total power over someone, and is supposed to resemble Salem in a few ways, which he does.

@@KraNisOG Then why does RT put MOST of their focus on Ironwood's EVERYTHING this volume? This is about RWBY is it? Why can't we have the entire thing be in the eyes of RWBY and their justifications on why they don't trust ironwood. It's saying a lot during the Dinner Party Scene where like 70% of that episode revolves around Ironwood explaining his reasoning and motivations and actions in the Adult dinner table and NOT the kids that are invited to it. Hell the episode after this when Jaqcues gets called out... one of the scenes WE see is Team RWBy just chilling in the back while the adults are talking. THIS IS HOW IRRELEVANT THEY ARE TO THIS VOLUME.

It's extremely rich for Blake of all characters to say they shouldn't trust him just because he has good intentions, when she's personally abandoned her friends to wander around for almost a year avoiding the White Fang. And it gets even richer when she's the one who tells Robyn about the Amity Project, purely based on thinking Robyn has 'good intentions' in her actions to help Mantle.

Like bruh gone V1-3 Blake: the antisocial, edgy brooding catgirl-in-hiding that just ran away from the White Fang to go to Beacon (only to combat them with Sun with no fear whatsoever (maybe cus Adam wasnt there idk))
Gone V4-5 Blake: the literally scared pussy cat that decides to run away once again when Adam showed up, and takes of her character design when coming home with Sun. When doing so, it turns out that shes a douche to Sun for no apparent reason despite showing signs of liking him in V1-3, and lives like a princess in a not so crowded island and then exclaims 'We ARe OppRESsED' when humans have done jack shit to her and is facing off actual victims of human oppression - Adam and Ilia.
Gone V6 Blake: the 'omg ur so irrelevant get out my face' gal that faces if Adam again but this time shes not scared cus she has her 1-armed-girlfriend with her, Yang. I still wonder how they got strong enough to face and defeat Adam cus all that changed was their models and clothes, they dont really show them training to become stronger throughout the story soooo bullshit.

Remember when Ruby struggled with her Silver Eyes, yet managed to freeze the Leviathan and dissolve the Apathy, AND one-shot Cinder with no repercussions? I would love for them to get a reality check, but that will never happen, the writers are way too precious about their main characters, not to mention a large part of the fandom agrees with them and takes everything for granted/as is.

Shouldn’t she be just as distressed as Ruby? Plus her and Blake were called out for revealing the truth to Robyn. Weiss also figures out her sister is going to have to kill Fria in order to get the Winter Maiden powers.

I think a decent way to have the Ace Ops lose with it still sort of making sense is to have Marrow use his semblance but Weiss uses her time dilation and maxes it out on her team to counteract it to give her team a temporary advantage which would essentially turn the fight into a "beat the clock" sort of thing where they need to use the time dilation effect that Weiss gave the team to their advantage before it runs out and as the fight goes on, they struggle more and more as the time dilation effect slowly runs out on them, but they ultimately win by the skin of their teeth just before the effect fully runs out. That way it's shown RWBY didn't beat them through skill or teamwork, but the fact that they literally had to use buffs in order to even stand a chance and it makes the fight much closer than RWBY just mopping the floor with them without a single loss or scratch. Now I'm not really sure how that would work in execution since this was an idea I sort of shot out off the top of my head without much thought or fleshing out, but I feel like I might be onto something.

So, it's hard to believe she wouldn't be able to keep things professional, since we don't see any personal interactions between her and RWBY.
I mean, RWBY themselves didn't seem to care about Elm at all, so they don't look very close.
If she's the type of person who'd run into a burning building to save someone, maybe they could've used that to make Elm sympathetic to RWBY's cause, that really would've put her into a bad head space for the fight. It sucks how Ironwood was the only sane individual in that volume, the only one thinking realistically while everyone else was being a self-righteous hypocrite. As someone said below they're no doubt going to make Ironwood a villain because if your not onboard with Team RWBY's way of thinking then your evil or wrong.
I agree that this whole volume was Ironwood's, his character development that would allow him to fully embrace what he needs to do to save Remnant. He doesn't care if no one likes him, he doesn't care if his actions are seen as cruel or ruthless. He wants to save the world, and isn't going to apologize just because his method might seem unfair or amoral.
Ironwood was screwed over by everyone in Atlas. He was lied to about Salem and Ozpin, his allies went behind his back, his political rivals kept disrespecting him and tried to discredit him just because he wouldn't tell them his plans and he now has Salem to deal with, who is heading to Atlas RIGHT NOW.
Ironwood did nothing but try his best to save everyone, got Ruby and co. out of jail, made them Huntsmen and shared his plans with them. He hid nothing from them, and they just spat in his face, talking about how they didn't trust him when Ironwood has done nothing but be honest with them.
Ironwood got sick of the lies, sick of children belittling, sick of all this bullshit and decided "fuck you! I'm doing what I feel is right!". You can't save everyone, Ironwood understands this and so needs to make the tough decisions. But Ruby and co. in their infinite wisdom think they can just save the day and protect everyone!
Spider-Man is one of the most wholesome and good-natured heroes in all of fiction, and while wouldn't agree with Ironwood's method, he would 100 percent agree that you can't save everyone, that's what Uncle Ben's death taught him.
I'm still going to watch the rest of the show because I want to see how it ends, but I still think that RWBY has become a fucking piece of shit show and that Roosterteeth are a bunch of cunts.

It's like the show suddenly became self-aware of how absolutely nuts Team RWBY was and made it the basis of Ironwood's arc. Almost as if 2 completely different writers joined the team, realized the shit covered cards they were dealt, and are actively trying to clean them by wiping them on their shirt.
The only way- and i mean the only way- that the characters can be salvaged at this point is by handing them their cake but not allowing them to eat it. Atlas and Mantle need to be wiped off the map completely so the characters can realize that being extremely all or nothing will not work every time.

Here's how RWBY VS Ace Ops would actually go down if the characters were competent:
    - Marrow uses semblance before fight starts
    - Ace Ops instantly win because Team RWBY are frozen and can be easily restrained
Imagine if Team RWBY did lose the fight and got thrown in prison, and at the start of volume 8 when Salem arrives the characters are unable to do anything about it because they're trapped in a jail cell. They feel helpless and all develop and grow, coming to terms with their situation and discuss what it means to do the right thing even when the world is against you, rationalising their own side of the argument as well as Ironwood's, thus opening their eyes more and more to what it means to be a Huntsman. Having strengthened their determination and will, they decide not to give in and break out of to stop Salem and save Mantle. Damn what a missed opportunity. Anyway, great review as always, Vexed. Thoroughly enjoyed every second

Unless Weiss somehow managed to bring out her stand before he could za warudo them, but... eh. Many of RWBY's base concepts have been flawed since their first usage. If they didn't want to talk about race - and trust me, they really didn't - the White Fang should have been supremacists from the start, and Faunus should have had equal rights. They literally just learned of Salem and they suddenly know better than Ironwood and Ozpin??
After reading the Infinite Man from the fairytales of remnant book, our protagonists look like a bunch of jerks even more. Ozpin literally got people killed for trusting someone and team rwby expects him to trust them when they barely know each other lmao.
And in volume 7 they didn't even trust Ironwood either and even betrayed him, told Robyn information Ironwood specifically entrusted to them when they weren't even sure if Robyn was even a good guy. What would they have done if she was secretly working for Salem? They would have been boned then.

An argument I hear in regards to the Ace Ops vs Rwby and the Qrow, Tyrian and Clover fight is the idea of, "Well if this character did x then we wouldn't get a fight." I'm of the mindset where if you can't get a scene to makes sense or be logically consistent then the scene has no business being made. Biggest examples of this is Marrow can freeze/slow the movements of anyone he's facing and Harriet can quickly cuff everyone or Vine can hold them down (like he did with the grimm). The powers on display are OP and Marrow doesnt have a major drawback from using it, so why isn't that the tactic the ACEs use? Well because the fight would end in a matter of seconds. Understand this, the writers should be able to write logical and consistent characters especially when it comes to a fight, none of the characters here are idiots and the ACEs have been shown to be a team and work well in combat. Ace Ops would win in seconds because that makes the most sense when you have a character that can freeze the enemy in quick succession. The fight only lasted as long because everyone in the room (mostly the ACES) forgot their abilities. If Writers really wanted the fight they should've wrote it to make sense, instead of making everyone an idiot, or better yet dont have the fight at all if it doesnt make sense.
As for the Qrow fight, which personally I like more because the choreography, it looks nice (though some parts are dont make sense) that fight suffers from the same issues as before with the Ace ops everyone is an idiot, except Tyrian (lord almighty he's the smartest one there). Its another example of the this if character didnt do x then there wouldn't be a fight, Robin picking a fight with Clover which leads to Tyrian being freed and crashing the plane. honestly I would've bought the scene a little bit more if it had just been a grimm attacking and crashing the plane. Then we have to go through both Clover and Qrow's choice to continue FIGHTING. both of them should've stopped fighting after the plane crash, again everyone makes he stupid decision except for Tyrian. Then Qrow teaming up with Tyrian. That moment destroyed Qrow's character for me, Vol 5 and 6 he was pretty useless, why would Qrow trust the psycho murderer that has been trying to kill him, his niece, her team, innocent people and works for the big bad that presumably got Summer killed. WHY? I mean to be fair Clover's stupid for telling Qrow he'd only help Robin if he came quietly.
You could've had the scene written where plane crash breaks everyone's aura shield, Qrow and Clover try to help Robin from the wreckage, Tyrian does that sneaky shit and wounds or kills Clover while protecting the two or something. if you want fight then dont make Qrow and Clover stupid and have Qrow team up with the psycho. As a whole these two fights to me feel like the writer wanted to have their cake and eat it too. We want the hero's to fight each other, but we're not going to put in the leg work for it to make sense.

Blake’s seen well-meaning extremists turn bad in the worst ways (Adam), and it would make perfect sense for someone like Blake to not want to see another Adam get created when she has a way to stop it.

"What has my writing accomplished?" is the question I don't think the writers of RWBY really understand. Watching the writer's commentaries, what they say is in their heads often doesn't come out in the show; you get the sense that they aren't getting an objective view from an editor who can tell them, "hey, so you wanted to convey X, but instead you conveyed Y". If Ironwood is totally fine letting the masses suffer for the big picture, why the hell should he care about the comfort of an old woman in her final days? to be honest, Ironwood has always been caring, his decisions were always trying to save as much people as possible, so if he kill someone that is close to him, it would be kind of OOC, specially when the though decisions he made, were at crucial moments, so he would not kill Fria, until it was completely necesary, and he actually was willing by the end. so that part was ok.

    • @oddbizarious224

@@henrybenitez313 Agreed. RWBY's a weird show like that, Ironwood seems to be pretty consistently written, from when he was introduced and up through this volume, while lore, time passage, other characters, mechanics, and etc are terribly inconsistent. There are some good scenes and character arcs that shine out for a moment, and even these end up forgotten development never used effectively, or retconned, or...Pennied. It's like if they focus on it too much, they ruin it, like Neo or Nora and Ren. I'm not sure what to make of their writing on Ironwood yet, only the next volume will show if they're going to cheapen his arc or continue it in a satisfying way. I hate where they took Qrow's arc, and....well most arcs really. Ugh. I don't know if I like Ironwood because he's actually a good character, or if he just looks good by comparison. It's a shame they never give Yang much to do anymore. For all of V5's flaws at least she was actually active. She's basically just been a side character in Volumes 6 and 7, either fighting her girlfriend's battles for her or otherwise doing nothing.
Yang's basically just fanservice now, and I don't mean that in just the attractiveness way (even if she definitely has lots of that too). She's the most powerful of the MCs, she's always a badass in fights, and she gets shipteasing out the ass with Blake. That's it. She reminds me of post-Kamino Bakugo in a way, except at least Bakugo is implied to matter to the overall story still.
It's just a shame because she could be so interesting if they just put the effort in, but... they don't. And I mean Yang's probably the most popular character in the series and her merch flies off shelves whenever they make something for her so who am I to judge, it's clearly working for them.

*ignoring the frantic scribbling of JaunexIronwood capitalizing on this moment of weakness to level the playing field with RubyxOscarXOzpin*
Crackshipping jokes aside, Vol 7 is where the Man Behind the Curtain is being exposed. Even if you believe that Monty wasn't the greatest storyteller ever, at least he knew the premise he was going for and stuck with it. At this point, you can't hide it anymore with Vol 7 and it's been a slow decent into madness since Vol 4.
THERE. IS. NO. CONSISTENCY. IN. RWBY.
It is the greatest weakness and most glaring flaw in this show. Even the most fledgling amateur writers understand consistency. Hell I expect a considerable lack of it from someone who is just starting out or someone writing something humorous that doesn't take itself seriously. That's something you'd expect in Red vs Blue, the concept that started this whole Company. Have a serious moment, then suddenly something wild and off the wall happens with no relation to the moment of drama AND IT'S CONSIDERED NORMAL.
This is supposed to be a team of professionals who do this for a living, yet they can't seem to figure out when you're writing something other then comedy, you need to have a layer of consistency to help the audience suspend their disbelief that these things can actually happen. They are WORSE then beginners who have just sat down to pen their first words.
That is the very definition of 'Retarded'.
They tried to turn a cute slice of life with elements of adventure and intrigue into a full blown action adventure story. And it's not working. Hell the original premise was barely being held together by Monty whom Shane tells us had to regularly fight Miles and Kerry to preserve the concept he wanted. Cute girls with outrageous weapons go to High School to learn how to fight Evil Monsters with Outrageous Fighting styles and occasionally get involved in Heroic Law Enforcement work.
What they're trying to get us to now accept is: Rogue Loose Cannons who don't play by the rules go on a epic journey to save the world from an ancient evil... while ostracizing official support because they're bad girls who don't play by the rules and everything is solved by the power of Friendship. Also look how virtuous, progressive, and socially aware our company is!
Even as a 20+ year writer, I'd struggle to get that latter concept to work properly while still being 'Politically Correct' and supportive of 'current age social struggles'. Kind of hard to write a story about Law Enforcement Trainees who bend and break the rules while supporting the whole 'FUK DA POLEESE' who are raging about actual Law Enforcement bending and breaking the rules of 'polite society'.
At which point I'd rather go ahead and just start making the main cast unaware terrorists who believe they're doing good-waaaaaait a minute....

    • @historynerd205
      @historynerd205 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

The only issue is, Erwin actually made questionable decisions and was not necessarily an entirely good person. You could debate on whether or not he was right. The framing was also on point, because it was also gray, AoT wasn't trying to shove down your throat that he was evil/good. Ironwood in RWBY is just correct, his decision is the only appropriate one in that situation. Yet, they still frame him as a villain of sorts, with no reasoning behind it, other than "He is not as naive as the protags.".

    • @oddbizarious224
      @oddbizarious224 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@historynerd205 Very true.
Erwin's motivation was particularly not as pure as Ironwood's. He just wanted to know if humans were outside the walls, to determine if his father's theory was true. And the ghosts he saw before he died in the final charge...Erwin felt the weight and guilt of all the lives he sacrificed. He did obviously take the sacrifices of his soldiers seriously, to the point of sacrificing himself completely as well, and to him the results his actions produced were what made the lives that were lost count. AoT's framing is, "you are backed into such a corner of a situation that none of your decisions will be 'good', you just have to make the best decision possible, which by everyone else's standards is a 'bad' decision because of how many people die from it." The idea is that the ideal is never possible.

They didnt care about how Adam went out, they just wanted Blake and Yang to have a triumphant moment
They didnt care about developing the AceOps because they just wanted to introduce a rival team subplot
I could go on but I think everyone can fill in the blanks.

My personal issue with the whole thing is that instead of blabbering about trusting or not trusting Ironwood, they could have straight up focused on bring afraid of the news causing him to have a breakdown!
My biggest concern was not Ironwood betraying anyone, but that the information will make him lose his head and do something stupid! For the message about "trust" this volume wanted to deliver on, the trust issues between Ironwood and any other official would have been more than enough.
In all honesty, if they wanted to have the team be unsure about telling him, there should have been debate and fight between them about telling Ironwood instead of everyone being on the same page at all times.
The Crow v Clover fight made no sense from any perspective!
Why was Clover prioritizing Crow's arrest over the serial killer who works with Salem?
Take down Tyrian and when you are unable to also arrest Crow, well then you have done what you could!
If he had won the fight and told Ironwood that he let Tyrian escape to capture Crow then Ironwood would have probably threw them into a cell together because he could not trust someone as incompetent as Clover!
I really did like Ren's breakdown though.
It was never really explained, but it just seemed to make sense to me for some reason.

The funniest thing about main characters' "we must save everyone" bs at the end of Vol.7 is how "consistent" it is: from what we've been shown in Vol.8 teaser trailer, they decide to leave the kingdom and "alert everyone", because it's either Atlas falls or all kingdoms fall. I don't think I should even explain what's the problem with that. Thinking of it now, I believe the apathy episode actually showed RWBY's real thoughts: the team is all for saving and protecting, doing heroic stuff, etc., but only as long as they don't risk anything and things don't get too hard. I mean, let's look at the Vol.7 finale - say, Ironwood went with their idea and tried to save Mantle and beat Salem. Considering RWBY and co's position, there would probably be hundreds, if not thousands of soldiers and drones between them and the big bad. And those soldiers would be the ones paying the bloody price.
Showing such a flaw in the MCs would be great deconstruction... Too bad the writers aren't smart enough to do that.

I hated two things more than anything this volume. First, Ironwood is portrayed like a villain, when in reality he's one of the only people making sense. Second, and more egregiously, Qrow.
Obviously, they replaced Vic which is sad enough as it is, but then they go and destroy the character too. First, they seem to immediately start him on a relationship with another guy, which I'm still not sure about. I don't give a shit if a character is gay or not, but if it blatantly contradicts the established character, then there's a problem. He's been shown thus far to be a pure and simple ladies man and a frequent drinker, albeit usually not to any extent that would harm him. Now he's something else entirely. Secondly, and this absolutely shocked me when I watched it, HE SIDES WITH TYRIAN!! Dude has been hunting down your niece AND nearly killed you with poison, but now you're going to team up with him to fight your fucking ALLY?!?!?! Sure, Clover wasn't his ally at the moment, but what the fuck kind of horrible monster do you have to be to take the side of your mutual enemy to the point of killing someone you care about?! As you said, Qrow killed Clover, there's no two ways about it.

There's no reason why that fight should have gone that way. Ironwood: “I don’t want to abandon Mantle, but we have to save as many people as possible.”
    Team RWBY: “But that’s…BAD!”

I liked Ironwood before this volume. He was the only member of the inner circle that had doubts about Ozpin's plans and wasn't just always blindly following him, which is probably the source of the conflict between him and Qrow back then. Qrow has little respect it seems for Atlas or its military, but Ironwood not being a good little soldier and only doing as he's told is what actually rubs Qrow the wrong way.
This volume only made me like Ironwood more and feel that RWBY honestly has no clue what they're doing. Ironwood is what makes this volume memorable or even work. His character arc is great and it's sad that I feel they are trying to set him up as a villain than a someone with the weight of the world on his shoulders and trying to do the best he can as even his allies work against him to some degree.
I think a big problem with RWBY asa group is that they haven't faces consequences for their actions. They get by on dumb luck or because someone protects them somehow. An unauthorized mission in Vale that causes civilian casualties as a war machine rampages through the city? Nothing happens and Ozpin may have even used his influence to get the matter dropped. The Breach is only stopped from being a total disaster by the intervention of JNPR and Atlas and team RWBY treats it as a solid win that doesn't require them to step up their game even though none of them won their fights. They walk into a trap at Haven and only survive and get the relic because of Raven's actions and that Adam antagonized the people of Menagerie with the attack on the Belladonnas. Yang might've talked Raven into handing the relic over, but even that was only because Raven beat Cinder and Adam wasn't able to blow up Haven.
They haven't really had a major loss or setback since volume 3. They don't seem to regard Salem as the threat they should, especially once the White Fang is out of the picture. Even when Ruby talks to Salem, it's basically acting like if she is heroic sounding enough, Salem will give up or be swayed by her words. Because it's not like anyone ever tried to stand up to the immortal witch that could probably single handedly wipe out Atlas before.
Even if Ironwood's plan to raise Atlas is a temporary measure at best, it still will save many lives and keep a relic out of Salem's reach. It just doesn't change anything for the rest of Remnant. Mantle is most likely doomed, but is only useful to Salem in drawing away Atlas troops or as a bargaining chip. Vacuo will still be attacked no matter what. Mistral has nothing of interest for Salem outside of petty revenge on Raven. Beacon is still under her control most likely. Atlas wasn't exporting Dust or other goods, so it's not like the other kingdoms weren't already dealing with that. Ironwood's plan saves some lives and buys some time to try and maybe figure something else out.
His plan for Amity and revealing Salem's existence is at least a plan no matter the questions of its feasibility in aiding the other kingdoms. It removes Salem's anonymity and provides a common enemy for everyone to work against.
Sorry for the rambling, but Ironwood is one of the best characters and one who is actually facing that hard decisions must be made. But, we're supposed to root for RWBY whose plan is a death match against an immortal witch that is more powerful than their whole group combined. The wonders of protagonist based morality.
A quote I always liked from Dr Who was "If you can't save everyone, then at least save someone". RWBY would rather save nobody if everybody can't be saved. I can only hope Atlas falls and they have to deal with the fallout and wonder if they actually did the right thing.
Also waiting for Robyn to betray them because of Salem promising to spare Mantle if she helps get the relic for her.

V7 is just V5, remastered and with a budget. On the writing part though, it's on par with V5. It doesn't help that adding two writers did not help deal with the mood swings, make storylines more substantial, and CRWBY took this long to even consider it. Had it not been for the last shot of Ironwood losing it, I might not even consider V8 because I want to see where he can go from there.

    Bad Things.
1: Team rwby you're defeating a team of professional Hunters with barely any training.. some may argue that Team Ruby are familiar with their fighting styles but that should also be vice versa considering the professional team Should Also Know How Team Rwby Fights.😂😂
2: Ren x Nora.. Why? What's already been established that they were Couple in Volume.. It would have been better if the relationship was Subtle. Lol.. how did Neo know To Transform Into Nora? Why Did Ren hesitate despite knowing that it was Neo?.. Why Would Neo resort to using that trick if she was easily capable of taking him down.
3: Oscar Punching Neo and Her not Reacting To It.
4: Qrow Siding With Tyrian. I'm sorry but I should not have to explain myself a why I put this down.
5: Ironwood Shooting Oscar.. Oscar was only one that was honest with him and he knew it..😂😂 it's just that the cheap way of trying to villainize Ironwood. Realistically it would been better if I would simply knocked him out knowing that Oscar Is Low On Aura and Captures Him To Keep A Close eye On Him.. besides killing him what only make the situation worse for him and after hearing Oscar's concerns about his Personalty being absorbed.. Ironwood Wonder if it is possible collective Souls into Robots which would result Oscar Soul and Personality being his Own.
6: the writing in general in the handling all the characters is complete crap.
I got more things to say but exhausting to think about Rwby's terrible writing

@@youwayo Good Things? Potential... but now it's just wasted potential. Are you aware That Monty Oum's Wife implied that Cinder fall was supposed to be more of a revolutionist/ Anti Villian. Not a one-dimensional villain that sociopathic and power-hungry... if that is the case and that would mean that it is possible that Cinder wants to free the world from Salem and Opzin Constant Influence... basically if you play Fire emblem houses she would be somewhat similar to Edelgard( but it depends know what route you play)

It's absurd how well written and consistent Ironwood is as a character when he's litterally in RWBY.
