    Ruby is one of the worst main characters I have ever seen. The last two volumes have put it over the top.

      They focused on everyone else the last two volumes, I think volume 6 will be her character development, this last volume they were pushing everyone else's character development was a lot of 4 & 5 was everyone else especially Jaune, Yang and Blake. They have their focus on them mainly this volume and not Ruby since I noticed she takes a supportive role in a lot of the others characters development. In volume 4 and 5 you do see Ruby have slight moments of being sad or extreme emotion which is all you really get as a clue that she isn't stable on the inside after everything that happened. They just haven't showed her changes right front and center and that makes her a bad developed character the last few volumes she growing slowly compared to how they are doing the others. My hope is volume 6 we get things focused on Ruby's growth. I personally think that the character development over the volumes is awkward since the volume are rather short and so are the episodes, if they were longer maybe we could have seen a lot more development of everyone.

    • @autisonm
      @autisonm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Ruby's character development isnt stated but its mostly implied. You'd have to take a really good look at the character to see the changes. I think pre V3 Ruby wouldnt have intervened in Qrow vs Tyrian.
      I hope Ruby gets more apparent character development in V6 because Weiss already has so much and doesnt really need much more. Weiss has the most character development out of RWBY

      @psnfailout000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      That whole “I just wanna be a normal person” theme was left unexplored the moment Ruby uttered the normal knees line, which led me to believe that the writers chose not to treat this as a theme at all and that it was only meant to be a joke. Not inherently a bad thing though. Guess I read too much into it, given that Ruby’s driving motivation stemmed from a romanticized view of heroism, with the narrative insisting that she’s a beacon of hope and purity. Doesn’t feel like she earned this characterization though.

      @@am-ranth8955
      Perhaps it _is_ too nuanced. Perhaps not. I honestly would’ve been fine with a clichéd girl scouty arc, where Ruby maintains her idealized version of what a Huntress is, all in spite of the grittiness Remnant has to offer. Stuff like that is just so inspiring when done right, and I assumed that’s where they’d go with her character.

    • @SomeoneOrSomething603
      @SomeoneOrSomething603 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      She wants to become a normal girl and hero at same time?! *Laughs*

    • @macayleangelina9892
      @macayleangelina9892 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SomeoneOrSomething603 Well, a character who wants two things that seem contradictory can be done right and result in an interesting inner conflict if you explore why they want these two things.
      For example, Ruby has made it clear that the reason she wants to be a hero is to make the world a better place, _not_ for the fame and attention. As for her wanting to be normal.. well, they kind of forget about this as the series goes on, but in the beginning they make it clear that Ruby is very shy and apprehensive about meeting new people and combined with her reservations about being team leader it seems that she just doesn’t really like it when the attention is on her.
      So, there you have it, she wants to make the world a better place but also she has social anxiety and doesn’t feel comfortable in the spotlight. She wants to be a hero but she wants to be seen as ‘a normal girl’.
      There’s nothing wrong with the concept, as usual when it comes to RWBY the problems arise in the execution, they seem to have left Ruby’s shyness behind entirely and therefore Ruby cannot have an internal conflict in wanting to be a hero while also feeling uncomfortable with all the attention she’s getting for it.

    Really, the biggest issue with Ruby isn't even just character development, but more or less.. She doesn't really struggle nor does she have any impact from events. "Sister gets her arm chopped off." Time to stay positive huh Ruby? Penny gets destroyed, Ruby is sad for a couple of moments then runs off for a moment to fight. Gotta stay positive! It comes off as if they're trying to write a strong female character, but decided the only way she could be strong is from only being positive and having no weaknesses.
    The worst offense to me, is that Ruby doesn't even have as many flaws nor quirks as she did in volumes 1 and 2.
    Also, why did Mercury throw a punch at her? He's the "kicking" guy.. They established that in volumes 2 and 3..

    • @nmtlnm
      @nmtlnm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +80

      I like Ruby's insecurities and flaws in the first 2 volumes. Shes one of the youngest at Beacon. Shes rather inexperienced in an otherwise experienced environment.
      Her giant weapon isnt the most practical at times I.E. vs. Cinder. And shes still learning as a fighter and a person. Volume 4 and beyond just tossed everything out the window and made her seem flawless before she has even matured. That's unrealistic to say the least.

    • @Birthday888
      @Birthday888 5 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      @@inplane9970 Exactly. Ruby wanted to be a Huntress primarily to save people from Grimm. So it makes sense that she would use a weapon super specialized in defeating them, instead of a more rounded out weapon like Pyrrha's. 3 volumes out in the "real world" and no one has commented on that.
      In fact, that's primarily the problem with volumes 4, 5, 6. The entire point of Volume 3 was to set up the scary world outside of Beacon and to show that the protagonists were nowhere near ready to take it on. Fast forward to Volume 4 and 6, and they're taking on Grimm more competantly than the average Huntsman. Geist? Killed in one episode. Nucklavee? Killed in one episode. Sea Dragon? Killed by two students and a cannon. Train attack? One Huntsman is taken out and another is injured, but our protagonists are completely fine. I'm sorry, but I call bullshit. RWBY doesn't know whether it wants Remnant to be a light-hearted adventure world with protagonists that can win with the power of friendship, or a dark, realistic fantasy epic. This ultimately holds it back.

    • @eastlemon9477
      @eastlemon9477 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Ruby should have had to come to terms with the evil of the world, and the good. Maybe even create a unique philosophy, for example, "Nobody does anything for purely 'evil' reasons because there is always a logical explanation for their actions, be it anger, sorrow, past experiences, or psychological problems, emotions make people do bad things and things like anger are psychological barriers meant to protect you, not hurt others. Although it's not an excuse it's not unreasonable to forgive people's faults because it's part of human nature", and also having to come to terms with how people who are forced to be violent due to their conditions fit into that world view. If someone feels like they need to hurt someone, do you just tell them to suck it up? But then again it's still technically not their fault. Why do people like Cinder exist and we're their actions evil just because they aren't righteous? It could be interesting but nooooo. The writers can't create interesting philosophical dilemmas and unique world views for their characters.

    Agree, agree, agree. Ruby has been falling flat really badly. This is how to fix it.
    -> Get her pissed at Ozpin for being incredibly irresponsible and disorganised for Volume 3. He's responsible for freakin' teenagers and then this grimm mess happens. And he knows about the ancient feud with Salem, why didn't he get help? Somebody call him out on his disorganisation please.
    -> Get her to feel guilt for not being fast enough to save Pyrrha.
    -> Make her question about her career choices. Reconstruct her optimism. Despite bad things happening, she continue to choose to take action. She knows she has no control over the world AND still believes to hang on to hope because its still her choice. They'd make a great reinforcing arc of her optimism.
    -> Make her lack of experience a problem. She's responsible for a bunch of teenagers AND got Qrow injured. There needs to be repercussions for her naivety and inexperience. She's good at killing Grimm but sucks at dealing with antagionistic people.
    -> Make her guilty for Qrow getting poisoned. In fact, make her have doubts about her mission! She brought out 3 inexperienced teenagers into a dangerous world. Hell, it'd be an interesting arc that she becomes overprotective after losing a lot of people.
    -> Get her extremely distressed when someone close to her dies. Her mother, Penny, and Pyrrha should have given her understandable but unhealthy coping mechanisms by now.
    There's load of material but they're not capitalizing on it. It makes me sad.

    Unfortunately, RWBY suffers from bad writing. But it’s not just Ruby taking this treatment, the whole cast endures this to some degree.
    And I wouldn’t call it a very fair comparison with Aang. Avatar had some of the best screenwriters and story boarders of Nickelodeon’s entire run on television. They began the show with a goal of doing something different, something very new and mature. They respected the audience.
    Truth be told, I love the hell out of RWBY. It’s really one of the only things keeping me going. I look forward to every bad joke they pull. There’s a lot of problems, and I think most of it has to do with Monty. He was a loss nobody was quite prepared for.

      Starting in Season 2, Ruby was badly set up as an ideal for the other characters to bounce their flaws off of when the split came after the fall of Beacon (Oobleck questions the sincerity of every member's motivations except Ruby's, because Ruby's the only one there just for the sake of being a huntress, as she idealizes the job as heroic - foreshadowing everyone besides Ruby ditching the huntress role when things got tough). Because she's a "right way" to be a huntress trainee who exists to compare and contrast with the conflicts of her team mates, and because they have yet to fully set up any individual conflicts for Ruby herself, Ruby comes off as flat.

    What really pissed me off about volume 5 was this concerning Ruby. Both Ozpin and Qrow know that she is a "silver eyed warrior" and is their best weapon against Salem, Cinder, and the grimm. Yet instead of helping her develop and nurture this "special" ability, which would be the LOGICAL thing to do, they have her practicing hand to hand fighting? That is just piss ass poor story writing and a big "Fuck you" to the fans after the reveal of her power at the end of volume 3. Not only that, but all through volume 4 and 5 she barely even USES her main weapon which is her scythe, but instead spends the volumes SHOOTING her way through the volumes. At the beginning of the series they give us this bad ass melee fighter, and then water her down to the point that her melee fighting skills are irrelevant. I honestly believe that the show would have been much better if Monty Oum was still alive, at least I hope so.

And the way Ruby explained it I felt no emotion whatsoever, not a tear drop nor a hint of sadness in her voice. She not only lost one friend BUT TWO, yet she still hasn't shown any emotions unlike Jaune who clearly is going through loss. If anything she should have been at least hesitant going into battle in season 5 with cinder since she literally saw Cinder kill Pyrrha.

Instead, he went from having a normal conversation to shouting at Ruby. That's why I felt it wasn't necessary for him to have such an outburst. Maybe if they showed more emotional conflict with Oscar before the conversation, it would've been conveyed better.

    The only way I can see Ruby Rose’s character being somewhat salvaged is if they lean into the whole (unlikely) speculation of her repressing her sadness. It would be nice if they showed her pretending to be happy and peppy, when she’s really tired and disgusted, like putting the team’s own needs before her own has taken its toll. Trying to shoulder everyone else’s hang-ups is too much for her to take. All those optimistic one-liners were just lies to keep up morale.
    She doesn’t ask about her silver eyes, because it reminds her of Pyrra’s death. She doesn’t ask Ozpin about her mom, because she’s still traumatized by her disappearance. While she may secretly suspect something sinister, she’s scared about the answer Ozpin might give her and how she’ll react. She knows it’s stupid and selfish, but she’s only human.
    Furthermore, she doesn’t want to upset the balance of the team, which is already treading on a fine line. Everyone is still getting over the aftermath of what happened at Beacon. Team RWBY just got back together. This gives her more of a reason to put up a front and bottle things up until it all explodes.
    Unfortunately, that may be expecting too much.

Exponential leveling power is a thing in actual MMO's, so I could buy that. If a hundred level 60's in WoW tried to gang up on a Lone level 90, those hundred 60's are gonna die before they even make the 90 Notice they're taking damage.

Man, this show is a mess right now... I hope the writers of RWBY fully acknowledges this and improves the show. I'm a fan of RWBY, I buy merchandise and I watch the episodes as soon as their out. But he is RIGHT.
    He's not bashing the show or anything, in fact, the amount of effort he puts in this video is proof that he has studied the show in great detail. Also, I think the biggest character conflict/issue with Ruby is her almost too blind optimism about both the world and being a huntsman even with her experiences. From day one, she's had this glamorized depiction of them as superheroes and idols who make the world a better place yet the plot has barely touched on the toll the lifestyle actually has on the individual.
    Even though Qrow doesn't bring his work home, he's a true example of what being a huntsman is really like in the previous volumes. It's not an awesome adventure 100% of the time and it's a job full of hardship and little rewards. He's lonely, burdened, drunks his personal issues away, has to leave his family behind for months on end, can barely trust people and may have to fight his own friends, any day he or his companions can die and even if he lives to see another day his efforts can be for naught with the right amount of bad people and Grimm in the world.
    Professor Oobleck may have seen that Ruby's answer to being a huntsman was the most appropriate, but her viewpoints on it would have devastated any other teacher. Even when betrayed and proven time and time again that "the real world is cold" (God I miss Roman), it's like being the spirit of unwaverable hope is her number one character trait that resets to Vol. 1 Ruby.
    And that sucks.

I'm not afraid to say he is the weakest, most untrained, easily the most pathetic. He didn't even know what aura was in the first volume. Who grows up in the world of Remnant and not learn what aura is until he/she is seventeen? Sure as time goes on, he gains more skill (bit by bit) but is still not on the same level as the other characters. He should be lucky that Cinder was too stupid to just kill him right away. At least he went from the Black Widow of RWBY to the Sakura Hurano of RWBY. I prefer a protagonist that can actually have a chance of beating the big baddy of the series without plot armor.

    • @fbi6179
      @fbi6179 6 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      RedDusk369 But that's what makes me turn to him and look at him as a protagonist. He is progressing, he is growing. He had nothing when he started, yet look at him now. He practically did the most damage during the nucklavee fight. His development is comparable to that of a shonen protagonist where a hero has to earn his strength, not given to him or born with it. He embodies the hero's journey more than Ruby or any of the other cast. Think Deku from MHA but with healing powers and high defense instead of Super strength. Compare the other side characters beside RWBY, they're all practically still the same as they were when they first appeared in the series.

      I mean he would, and we have probably seen more growth and change from him than any other character in the show save for maybe Yang or possibly Weiss.
      However he hasn't gotten nearly enough growth and is still the comic relief character and butt of all the jokes and a near constant bait and switch. Like you get to see the training with him in the forest in season 4 (which is an awesome scene) but then you just see him being the bumbling idiot on the battlefield again. He shows some promise as a leader and then he's right back to being a weak willed idiot. He gets to go face to face with his girlfriends killer and fucking trips once and because of that is too weak to get up.
      I get that he's the underdog and he's awkward and has poor self esteem, and you know that's fine, even a good character flaw and something interesting to focus on in his growth and see how that can hold him back even if he gets stronger. But as of now he's just the punching bag of the main characters and not in a good way.

      I have already wrote about this elsewhere in this comment section, so I don't want to repeat myself much, but I think the reason why people find Jaune to be more like the main characters is because he is more or less a bundle of typical shounen protagonist traits and motivations.
      -He wants to become the holder of a title (in this case, a Hunter) to prove it to others that he is not useless. [Insert comparisons to Naruto here.]
      -He is not very knowledgeable about the world and the metaphysics, so he serves as an audience surrogate.
      -He is considered weak, but he is shown to have great hidden potential (his Aura) and that he has the charisma and the capability to lead others.
      -Early on he gets into a classic love triangle, where he pursues the cold girl that doesn't want anything to do with him while not realizing that he already has the affections of another girl. [Insert another Naruto comparison here.]
      -He has a very personal vendetta against one of the main villains (Cinder, for killing Phyrra), which pushes him into the stereotypical "I have to get stronger" shounen protagonist mentality.

    I don’t mind Ruby being a beacon of hope and optimism, but she should have spent some time in Four questioning the hope. Having to get that hope back. Only it’s not naive hope like the S5 “work with us speech,” but the glimmer of mature hope that came with the letter writing scene

    Ruby's simply getting the Akame treatment, AKA "you are the main protagonist and have your name in the title [Ruby (RWBY), Akame (Akame Ga Kill)] but that's what you will only get. We may throw a flashback or so and pretend it is considered character development.".
    I mean, both Yang AND Kurome, AKA people related to the main protagonists, got more development than them.

    My thoughts about RUBY in general:
    She's a mascot character. That may sound odd at first, but think about it... Squeaky voice, high resistance to shipping (hetero ones anyways) and, as explained in the video, they're adamant about not breaking her like they (claim they) did to Yang and Weiss.

  • @TheHulkfan
    @TheHulkfan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +316

    I can kind of understand why Rt still keeps Ruby personality back to be optimistic.
    They want to show a character than can go through all kind of challanges, no matter how hard they are and how terryfing and cruel the villains are, she will not be broken mentally, she will fight despair with hope.
    A good idea, but sadly the execution is the main flaw not just with Ruby, but with the whole show. There are good idea in it, but they can't use them in the right way.
    And with Ruby it turns her into an annoying and boring character. It doesn't help that there are so many character in this story with so many subplots that it makes her so pointless.

    • @TheHulkfan
      @TheHulkfan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Also, to add about the whole Silver Eyes stuff, I think the answer to why doesn't Ruby want to discuss or focus on how they work is for the same reason that the link between the Maidens and the Relics took 2 volumes (4 and 5) to be explained and even then I find myself asking a lot more questions behind the reasons Ozpin had to turn 4 kind girls into super powered warriors that works as keys to open chamber that hides very powerful relics and thus making such girls the main target to any evil does who wants to take them. But let's digress.
      The whole point is that Rt writers need time to explain how the Silver Eyes work and, possibly, try to find an excuse for why Ruby didn't just used them at every chance she had.
      Is rather paradoxical, when you think about it: they gave her a power that allows her to wreck any kind of Grimm in one shot even without training and they (the so called writers) realized it and tried to fix it. Failing.

      @TheHulkfan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Yeah, the power level in this series is one of the worst.
      In the first 3 volumes they made most of the character look powerful, but since volume 4 everyone looks weaker, slower and could be taken out by a street level character.
      Now there is Salem, someone that everyone keeps mentioning being unstoppable... and that's it. We don't see any sign of why she's so unbeateble.
      But if she's so damn powerful why doesn't she just step out in the light and do things personally rather than have at her side people that is either weak or stupid?
      We just learned that she can control Grimm and even create them out of nowhere, why doesn't she just attack?

      Ruby being an optimist in spite of all she's been through isn't necessarily a bad thing. The problem is that they don't do anything with her besides that, removed any agency from her part, don't let her be relevant to the story that should revolve around her, are always too late to address her issues, and so on. Every time they have an occasion to do something with her, they mess up.
      For example, sure the subject of her silver eyes is a tough one. I can understand they might not want to give too much information on it or have Ruby master it now. But Ruby not being even slightly curious about it, not letting us now what she might feel about it, is criminal. Having Ozpin train her for an irrelevant skill she didn't need, while completely forgetting the reason she's supposed to be important , that let her enter Beacon in the first place (and she knows that), got her mother killed, and put a target on her back, is the most retarded thing I've seen in a long while.

      The experience is watching both penny and phyrrah die and not being able to help.
      Penny because mercury was in the way, and phyrrah because she didn't get there in time.
      And you are right the writers make it seem like all the change happened inside her head and out of the viewers way (not in the episodes) when there is supposed to be change and focus on her problems it ends up being about jaune instead, when she wants to open up and share how she feels about the situation she is stoppped (as mentioned in the video)
      And when she is let to say what she thinks she has already gotten over it, or atleast dealt with it within her mind. When talking to Oscar she says that she did feel sad over that (BUT WE DON'T GET TO SEE HER REFLECTING ABOUT IT) just atleast one episode about her and how it has affected her.
      But since we don't get that we are just to assume either she hasn't change or if she did it wasn't much abd she's still the same as ever.

      @fearingvirus4156 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      The unknown Parade this is true. They might’ve had to fall back on cliches, sure, but cliches are cliche because they work. She could have been devastated that she was powerless to save her friends, causing her to be more reckless in combat, as if she slows down or gives herself time to rest, that’s time the enemy could be getting closer to hurting more of her friends. She could push herself to the breaking point and beyond. Push the nightmare angle up to 11, she can’t sleep, she’s exhausted and sleep deprived but she won’t stop. So eventually she becomes a liability and Jaune has to pull an intervention. I think this woulda given more development between the two of them, which I woulda loved to see, since that leadership talk from volume 1 is still one of my favorite scenes in the whole series. Love their chemistry. Or push it directly in the opposite direction, have her go off alone, no team, leave her friends behind because she can’t bear the thought of not being good enough to save another one. She goes off to defeat the enemy alone, because after all, she’s got this weird magic silver eye thing, right? So she goes off with a false sense that she has the power to defeat the bad guys all on her own, only to realize she has no clue how to use it, or if it’s even enough to beat them on it’s own. So you could do an arc of her learning that she can’t do things alone, like she’d thought, and that the possibility of losing people comes hand-in-hand with being a huntress, with being a hero. Sorry for the friggin novella here, geez. I’m a prospective writer myself, so I thought I’d point out a couple potential ideas for arcs after Volume 3 that came off the top of my head. Didn’t think it’d be this long, hahaha, sorry again.

      I'm not annoyed with it. I love it, I really do and I don't watch it to talk crap. Just like any other show it has mistakes and "weak points" that has to be developed. Ruby needs to grow to make RWBY better, and she doesn't has to change his character in order to grow. She can still be a sweet and innocent girl and also mature and taking the lead on things. Characters grow but they don't lose their essence, what they're. Blake is not a coward anymore, but she's still that quiet faunus, for example. And Ruby is the protagonist, they need to make her act like one, with good scenes and an important role, like if you remove Ruby from v5 is not a big deal, things don't change at all. And that's not how a prota should be.

  • @grisly-bear585
    @grisly-bear585 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I find the bratty side of Ruby in Season 1 a good starter for character development. But Rooster teeth screwed up character development of Ruby in season one already, don't even talk about the subsequent seasons. That time, Weiss found Ruby undeserving of being the team leader. Weiss gave in after consulting the teacher and told somewhat apologized to Ruby. Ruby should have said something to Weiss instead of being too surprised to say anything to Weiss, it only showed Weiss' character maturing while Ruby's mental development was flat. If only Ruby tried to comfort or compromise for Weiss, would there be a raised sense of unified team cohesion. Ruby didnt try to reflect for her brattiness in front of Weiss at the forest scene and the writer just moved on with the story.
    Thus, can't we just conclude that the character management of Ruby is doomed from square one?

    To elaborate on my thoughts on Ruby, to me she was fine in V1-3. She only really had development in the first one, but there was still some hints that there was more beneath the surface, thanks in large part to Red Like Roses part II, and the end of V3 dropped such a bombshell on her. When I learned that according to Miles and Kerry the first three volumes were more or less the prologue of the real story, I thought that then her real development would start after the fall of Beacon. Now that what made her special was revealed, that she witnessed the death of her friends, and she went on a mission to save the world while being targeted by the bad guys she would finally get to shine, right? Wrong. In V4 she was sidelined quite a bit, with as you said only chapter 6-7, 10 and 14 actually focusing on her. Which was a shame, but I kept thinking we just had to be patient, certainly in V5 she would get more focus, right? All of this waiting is going to pay off at some point, right?
    Well, wrong. Again.
    In V4 she was sidelined in favor of Jaune, Ren and Nora, in V5 in favor of Oscar and Ozpin. They removed any agency on her part. They treated her like a massive idiot. They made her learn a skill that was pointless, instead of having her asking questions that should interest her about her mom and ger powers. She was put to the side when her sister and her partner bonded about their loneliness, while she was excluded from the conversation entirely and they removed even further her link to her mother by making her not able to talk yet when she died. They didn't develop her relationships with he uncle, hef friend who's also grieving the loss of a friend, her sister, or her partner And when she could have been given the opportunity to prove she was still a badass, nope. She gets KO'd after being used to reinforce Jaune's plot armor. She doesn't confront Cinder, nor Emerald and Mercury for the death of Penny. She tries to be a leader, but it cuts away from her right away, just showing her headbutt a guy to pretend she had some growth. She doesn't even use her semblance once in the whole volume. They made her completely irrelevant in her own story.
    Now I'm just done. I used to like her, because I genuinely thought she had a huge potential with themes of coming of age, heroism, loss, overcoming tragedy, optimism... But no there's just nothing there. She's just reduced to be there, be cute, and deliver speeches about hope. She's just Katara, the Ember Island version.
    And I still don't get all of this happened. How she ended up being so neglected by her writers that she became a sad joke. What went through their mind when they thought it was ok to do this to her, to spend five years before realising they should give "more attention and meaningful conflict" to their fucking main character.
    Of course, she's not an isolated case. IMO volume 5 was a clusterfuck of bad writing. I just don't have any faith left for Miles and Kerry to improve, the damage are unsalvageable at this point. I can only assume in V6 she will keep being sideline, keep not receiving development, and no real effort will be put into her, just more lazy half-assed bullshit to pretend they care.

If characters in rwby aren't just as they need it to be, for the sake of the plot, while none of them are consistent or really developed, because if they need to be stupid, even salem is gonna have the same iq as adam in v5. It's also weird that Rudy is the only one that has to learn hand to hand combat .it would make more sense for Weiss who had already lost her weapon before and is probably worse at it. if she was already there while Ozpin had this idea it would be nice to see them training together working on there weakness. Maybe a heart to heart about how frustrating it is. Then leading into some development for them and their relationship . But could still be point less it's up for debate. Finally, someone finally actually said what I have been thinking this whole time. I thought I was the only one that noticed that Ruby had become effectively a vapid and empty character. Good to see that I'm not the only one. Frankly, the writers legitimately need to take some time and rethink everything they're doing top to bottom. Even the good characters in the show are starting to look dumb because a lot of big questions aren't being asked. And yes, it's actually a plus to have characters have a weakness like you said... so the whole idea they spent time on her learning how to fight hand to hand was literally a waste of precious time for nothing.

Rose could’ve been a really good character, who we see go from naive and positive all the time, to someone whose exceptionally badass and strong, intelligent in battle, maybe a little more full bloodlust or we see her start to consistently fall apart while seeing her hide it so she can have an interesting arc where she maybe explodes because she tries to be happy all the time and finally reaches a breaking point. But she’s still so,,, stupid?

    I agreed with a lot of what you said.
    Yes Ruby is a terrible main protagonist, and honestly the show needs to improve on her if they continue to make her the main character, since as oh now she has just been there. Not adding anything to the main story like at all, heck even Mata had more development then she ever did since after Volume 3, that's not ok.
    But also in all honestly why does this show need a main character? If their wasn't a "main character" for the show, it might help it a little. Heck they technically already do just that.

I've seen better female protagonist who've handled their own show perfectly but I don't see Ruby being any better than most of them, especially for anime.

    at this point yang had more development than rubes, and yet her entire character is still focused on how much she loves and wants to protect her baby sister. even resolving her mommy issues was to get it out of the way so she can go back to protecting ruby. her conflict with blake, arguably her most important relationship outside of family and her chance to break away from turning into a satellite hovering around ruby, her grudges against merc an adam were completely swept aside bc omg i need to find rubers she’s helpless without me!! i’m so happy we’re together again idc about anything else!!
    ruby isn’t just a flat character, she’s a black hole who devours others’ development

    • @CtisGaming
      @CtisGaming 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ruby hasn't devoured anyone's development. Wanting to return to a family member you depend on is a motivation, the development is all of the stuff she went through to get there. She pushed the plot forward enough in vol 1-3.
      Prior to vol 4-5 everyone but Blake and Weiss had nothing for character development, one of which grew with Ruby in their rivalry. Nora, Ren, and Jaune gained a lot of character through their quest with Ruby to Mistral. Without these 2 seasons focusing on everyone else, we'd all be saying that about the cast as a whole.

    • @CombustibleCake
      @CombustibleCake 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      CtisGaming i like how you completely missed my point which was that yang’s ENTIRE character revolves around ruby. i’m not saying she should drove the entire plot, i’m saying that of the 4, her subplot revolves entirely on another character. all her personal plot points were swept aside bc OMG RUBY. that’s terrible writing.
      each character should have a personal motivation. blake has reconciled with her family and intends to right the wrongs of the white fang like she’s always aimed to do. weiss is starting to truly break away from her abusive family members and assert her own identity. heck even ruby, the least developed of the main characters, has her own personal goal: save the world by beating salem.
      yang? find ruby. follow ruby. protect ruby. accomplish ruby’s goals. she currently has nothing she wants to do for herself. everything she does is to keep ruby safe. that isn’t just bad writing and characterisation, it’s unhealthy behavior to focus your entire life looking after someone else. several fans have made long, detailed criticisms of yang’s relationship with/dependence on ruby.

    Ruby is seriously approaching Mary Sue status at the rate she's going. If she actually had a personality she'd have breached it.
    Youngest member of beacon becomes team leader and has super special super powers that invalidate the main antagonist's and her subordinate's special super powers even though she wants to be both "normal knees" and a fairy tale hero.
    Also she is loved by all the main cast and not a single not totally evil person has ever not liked her. She's bad at social interactions they say but she has half the known cast lining up to talk and get along with her. Fuck Yang admits it in episode 1 but she goes on like she can't make friends, despite how obviously skilled she is at making them... From the school dunce Jaun to the Schnee Heiress to a Faunus ex-white fang Princess to Planned Maiden and Famous Athlete Phyrra to A extremely covert and experimental Aura/Soul containing Atlas robot to The fucking immortal wizard of Ozpin! How is she friends with all of these famous people coming from a no name background?!
    She breaks rules in this prestigious school but that only makes her seem more capable/engenious to the adults even when she just got really lucky.
    Somehow her abilities that make specifically Grimm fear her are actually wanted by the queen if Grimm so she's intended to be taken alive.
    Her mentor/drunkcle/Father "figure" is part of a super secret organization and considered the best hunter we know of...
    Honestly if Miles and Kerry gave more screen time to Ruby she'd make the show worse by how much she warps the world. Every five seconds she exists on screen a retcon or new bullshit power or incomprehensible friendship suddenly manifests into the show. Legit the show drops in quality every time the protagonist shows up. She makes the most frustrating, one dimensional, and disappointing decisions. She has potential but every time she opens her mouth or does something it's a build up to a anti-climax.
    She shows this almost, psychopath behavior and then it's either hand-waved, ignored, or somehow missed by the writers for something dumb. She acts like she's got some possible, hinted at depth throughout the show but there is zero pay off.
    She watches Penny get murdered and then Phyrra. But instead of some kind of CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, she gets a random new super power and her personality on the surface is the same, naive, one dimensional, childish crap from season 1, which was a regression from the far more interesting fan theories about her from the red trailer!
    Atleast Ichigo, Goku, Luffy and the rest HAVE development! Ichigo is traumatized by his mother's death and swears to be a protector. Luffy sees his brother die after just saving him and this actually makes him have a emotional breakdown. Goku, while extremely simple in motivation is atleast known to get angry and be serious when the time comes. He developed from a guy wanting a trinket back to a guy saving the world and the people he cares about after coming to love them. The fuck is Ruby? A girl who wants to be a fairy tale hero. In a world as dark as remnant? Forget unrealistic that's just stupid.
    It's like they made Madoka Magica's world but put Sailor Moon with all of her plot armor as the main character. The show deconstructs the fairy tale urban fantasy world, but leaves the idealistic, friendship loving protagonist untouched.
    It's fucking baffling how badly they've fucked up Ruby's potential by making her as stagnant as possible regardless of the plot bends/holds required to do so.

    • @Cooldude-ko7ps
      @Cooldude-ko7ps 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Here’s an idea.
      Ruby has lived a sheltered life on the relatively safe island of Patch. After her mother’s death she chose to try to stay as optimistic as possible as she believes that is what her mom would of wanted. As she grows up she dreams of becoming a idealised version of a hunter like from her fairytales. When she first goes to Vale/signal she learns that the world isn’t all sunshine and rainbows and that there are bad people who do bad things.
      At Dust Til Dawn stops the robbers non lethally just like in her dreams. After Roman and Cinder get away Goodwitch arrests her for vigilantism though ruby doesn’t understand why she’s being arrested for doing something good. At the Police Station Professor’s Ozpin and Goodwitch take over and the “interview” happens. Ozpin decides to enroll Ruby into Beacon two years early as he sees both potential in her and someone he can easily mold and sway to his side.
      Everything is the same until initiation where she and Weiss witness someone getting killed by a pack of Beowolves. (What would of been team CRDL is down a member). After getting over their shock (ruby especially) they rush in to kill the Grimm and to try to save the boy. When Ruby checks on the boy he dies telling her that he just wanted to be a hero. Ruby and Weiss are forced to retreat where they recover and calm down. Ruby is especially shocked after seeing someone who wanted to be a hero as well die. Her perception that everything is okay and well is shaken.
      After initiation Ruby gets upset and depressed over the fact that she saw someone die and she couldn’t or wouldn’t do anything about it. Ruby tries to cheer up by decorating her and her teams dorm. But she still thinks about how she failed and that she might die too.
      Weiss is shocked as well by the boys death but she takes it better as she understands that it’s how life goes in this world and that she will see people die and bodies. When it was announced that Ruby was to be team leader instead of someone else she was angry and surprised by how ridiculous the choice was to put a 15 year old girl who lives in a bubble, is immature, childish and is easily shocked by death in charge of a four man team of hunters in training is. Weiss talks about this to Blake and they agree that Ruby is not fit to lead and that they should try to teach her the intricacies of leading other people into battle.
      Ozpin chose Ruby as team leader so as to have more ability to mold (groom?) and sway her to his side. Making Ruby a team leader was a purposeful choice to both build up her ego and allow him to praise her ability when he could during things such as mission briefings. His goal for her is to make her completely loyal to him and to utilise her silver eyes as a weapon against Salem like her mother. If she were to become too troublesome he could always send her on a suicide mission against the Grimm or Salem like he did with Summer Rose.
      All that he cares about is defeating Salem while looking like the good guy. Even if it means manipulating young children to use as weapons.
      It was also the same reason he enrolled Jaune Arc and made him team leader as well even though his transcripts were fake. A naive and easily manipulated young man as a team leader is exactly what he wants for his plans.
      What do you think? I can write more if you want.

    The guy who originally created RWBY died after volume 2. RWBY wasn't really originally designed for the story, but rather over the top animation which is often showcased in the fight-scenes within volume 1 and 2. It started as a passion project by a animator with the dream of creating his own anime that got backed up by the folks over at rooster teeth and tbh the show just isn't the same without him as we had started to see after volume 3 since I'm guessing that's were his story panels and notes ran dry.

    As much as I love RWBY, I think one of the worst decisions they made with Ruby is that I think Ruby did go through contemplating what a huntress is. However they skipped right till she was all good and dandy and ready to be all optimistic and happy again. They were trying to show that no matter what the bad guys did, Ruby was determined to keep going and not be held back, but they could've shown something at least. Guys, come on. Pick up *one book* about how to write good fiction. Just one. Learn the freaking basics, I beg you. The mistakes made with pacing, with Ruby and with just general lack of payoff (that headbutt, Vexed, I swear...) were shockingly amateur.
    The amount the characters didn't do perfectly logical things because the script said they couldn't was ridiculous, and it really showed in the fight scenes. Why on earth would Nora and Ren not help their teammate when he goes after one of the strongest people in the room? Why would Yang and Ruby leave Weiss to fight someone they thought was really powerful by herself? Why did Ruby order Yang into the vault with three extremely powerful people who ranged from slightly to very hostile towards her, when Ruby surely would want to throw herself into danger ahead of her friends *after witnessing the death of another friend in the past?* No? Cool.

Both get put on a team with an aloof teammate/a revenge seeking teammate, as well as a "smarter but not stronger" teammate. Both are eager to join the local Ninja/Hunter academy without fully understanding that they're signing up for a certain amount of a living hell in a shitty world that borders on living hell anyway. They both get heavily beaten down at an early point, and also have to deal with the "Oh my God... this career is horrifying!" realization. Both lose friends or have their friends injured.

Both Weiss, Blake and Yang all have similarities to Sasuke, due to being strong fighters (all 3), or having dark and troubled pasts (B and W, and maybe Y.), having a revenge quest/old rival (Blake, and later Weiss, respectively), among other distinctions.
