In January 2021, Owen Grobler and I visited the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park during an exceptionally wet rainy season, which had transformed the park into a lush, green paradise. We had two full weeks in the Kgalagadi and explored all three main camps, Twee Rivieren, Nossob and Mata-Mata, as well as most of the wilderness camps.
In this short film, I share all the highlights from this amazing green kalahari trip, including some of the best lion, leopard and cheetah sightings I've ever had in the Kgalagadi! So sit back, relax and enjoy our adventure.

Thank you for this stunning insert / video, as a born & bread Namibian, I always enjoy the wild life & Namibia scenery, am staying in SA, but that beautifull country always brings back lovely memories, blessings 😇😇😇🤗🤗🤗💕💕💕🙏🙏🙏🙏
That is so amazing, so green! I am very jealous of your cat sightings.
I grew up in the Kalahari, and now live in the Alps. Thank you so much for this beautiful film, bringing back all my sweet memories of being a Kalahari child.
Thank you Villiers 👍📽👏 Kgalagadi regards. Sheleph 👍🐆🦁
This is the best upload! Cant believe we have missed it. Glad we caught up. The Kgalagadi is just amazing. Cant wait to visit it again when green. The South of the park is definitely underrated.
Awesome video. We were also fortunate to see the green Kalahari. Beyond special. We saw 5 leopards in total!! A super special place,
Special indeed, Kate!
No thanks needed really. This vid does it all and such a good ad for the Kalahari Kgalagadi. Used to live in Africa, miss it everyday, so it makes my day when I can see something like this.
A brilliant video with some awesome Leopard sightings.
Thank you very much, the Owtrams :)
Fantastic ❗️❗️ always an amazing experience in the Kgalagadi 👍👏🐆🦁 regards Sheleph
This is certainly the colourful wonderful and joyful journey 👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Wow. Once again thank you for the awesome video. I'm so envious. Keep on posting.
The best ever so far I have seen. The green and colourful Kalahari. Best of best sightings especially the two male brothers and the cheetah family. The cherry on the cake - leopard mating on the green grass. The best ever sightings. How can I join you on a safari to Kalahari?
Very well done! Great video and soundtrack!
Thank you so much!
Excellent video Villiers! Really enjoyed it!
Thanks Mark! 🙏🏻
Great production!
Thanks a mil, brada!
Love the video. What a nice trip and footage
Thanks so much, Karen!
What a wonderful film! I am aware that this is not what the Kalahari region looks like most of the time. But nevertheless, having seen your gorgeous captures, we have added another amazing place to go onto our bucket list😊❤️🙏🏻
Such...extraordinary footage, full of life n lush vegetation..keep it up..
Superb Video -Thanks.On the list for my next trip to Southern Africa
You won't regret it, Bob! ;)
Great stuff Villiers!
Thanks Brian!
Stuff of dreams. And I hope it is in mine. Thank you so much for this exquisite journey.
The pleasure is all mine, Ace ☺️
what a lovely video... awesome... professional...
Thank you so much, Cantay 🙏🏻
Great video, bud. I experienced a similar Kalahari in Feb 2012 and it was magnificent, with some of the best sightings on my end as well. People think lots of rain will keep the animals away, but I think it's a misnomer. Anyway - we've also had our fair share of car trouble and stomach trouble in that wonderful place...once it was from absentmindedly using the ice in the freezer of the chalet (like you said: don't touch the water, even frozen versions of it)
Thanks Morkel. Ja, this place is special! It takes you on the highest highs and can sometimes drop you to the lowest of lows...but I love every second of it 🥰🙌🏻🦁
Lovely to see
It was amazing, Peter 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
Fantastic video. Incredibly beautiful sightings each and every one and a Wild Cat WOW and birds and butterflies, mating leopards and lions and Cheetah and a Brown Hyena and so much more. Truly beautiful sightings and stunning landscape. Thank you so much. .
Thanks Annette. We were truly blessed :)
Awesome video, so professionally put together. Well done and keep going!
Thanks, Michael! You must have really enjoyed it considering how recently you were there... 😉
What an experience that must have been! 🌿🐆
Beautiful footage, and excellent put together video Villiers. 👏🏻
Thanks so much, Dawie! I’m glad you enjoyed it 👏🏻😎
Magnificent sightings and excellent footage with great narration! Thank you for sharing ... sooo homesick!! We love EVERY camp but our fav camps include KK and Urikaruus and Bitterpan.
Thanks so much 🙏🏻☺️ I’d go back tomorrow if I could!
Thank you for sharing this beauty with us...it's my dream to go there myself before I'm too old to travel.
My pleasure, Robyn!
Top notch vid. Kalahari looks so wonderful, if I could get on a plane now I would be there. Thanks for such a wonderful experience; I feel so envious of you.
Thanks so much, Mandy 🙏🏻☺️
Nice video
Very pretty to see, and all these animals, Lions, Cheetahs, Leopards,Ostrich, and the rare brown Hyena and all the others are beautiful💞
Thank you for the video 🙂
My pleasure, Sab!
What a great video and so amazing to see the Kgalagadi so green!
Thanks Joe!
I would truly love to visit in the Green Season, it looks absolutely glorious! Fabulous footage. Loving your videos Villiers.
Thanks Dee! I'm glad you like the videos :)
Fabulous production. What an amazing trip!
Thanks for the kind words, Sarina ☺️🙏🏻
Thank you for this beautiful short film. What amazing sightings you had! It makes me very excited, as this time next week we will be in the Kgalagadi ourselves. It will be interesting to see how much of the "green kalahari" is left.
It's my pleasure, Susan - I'm glad you enjoyed it. Knowing that harsh Kalahari sun, I'm going to guess that most of the greenery will have been replaced with golden colours...
Absolutely brilliant video. I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to more of your work! Thanks for sharing Villiers!
Thank you for the kind words, Nicole. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos :)
Wow, what a great trip and so well documented. TR and Nossob have been my favourites, with Kij kij and CQ probably my favourite waterholes. I mostly enjoy just driving up and down the dune roads to see whatever natures offers up. Were those some black storks in the one scene at the waterhole? Can't believe the amount of rain, green and flowers this year!
Thanks John. I must agree - KijKij and Qubitje are amazing waterholes, especially for photography. Those storks were Abdim's storks. It was incredible to see so many of them in one spot, some days in their hundreds... 😱
Great video with good commentary, very well done. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, Derek 🙏🏻

Thanks so much, Alex!
That is absolutely incredible!!! I'm dying to visit the SA Kgalagadi!! I can't believe the sightings that you had there, unbelievable!!
Callum, it was one of the best trips I've ever had to the Kgalagadi!
Africa is typical example of how God created this world a clue how a garden of eden might have looked like amazing look around the world with all animals locked up in zoos where are they from?Africa gives this animals hope check out okavango delta it's amazing
Extremely and Absolutely spectacular. Pure Heaven. Thanks for sharing I really enjoyed this.
My pleasure, Kimberly. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Great video Vil! I’m sure yourself and Owen look back at this with fond memories! Apart from the stomach troubles 😂! Love Twee Riverien game viewing but love Kalahari tented and Mata Mata. Would like to try kiliekrankie though!
Thanks so much! 😅 Kieliekrankie is one of my favourite camps - great design and view, plus it’s perfectly located for game viewing.
This is really extraordinary !!! thank you so much ! what a great time you've had ! thank you for sharing, I really enjoyed every minute !
I’m so glad, Danielle! ☺️
Amazing love the place.
Thanks, Thomas! It really is amazing...
Coooooolp
Great Video! What camera/lens setup did you both use to photograph the wildlife?
Thanks, Upendra. Check out my video on the best 600mm for wildlife in the Kgalagadi that I post a couple of weeks before this one - that will give you a good idea. Essentially, Owen used a Canon 5DmkIV with a 600mm f/4 prime and I filmed with a combination of a Canon 80D + Tamron 150-600mm G2 and a Canon 5DmkIV + a Canon 100-400mm II lens.
Can you make more videos like this
Cool Video - with Videocam do you use? and happy - Kind Regards Rolf (Nam Tourguide & Safaris)
Hi Rolf. I shot this video on four different cameras: a Canon 5DmkIV, a Canon 80D, a Canon XA50 camcorder and my iPhone Xs
Nice video , this is which side ? Botswana or south africa ?
South Africa side
Hi Villiers, very nice video, thanks! I consider buying a video camera like the one you mentioned above. How many of the clips in this video were taken by the Canon XA50? I would like to get a feel of the quality of the camcorder. Or were most taken with your DSLR? Do you mainly use the door bracket to stabilize your equipment? Thanks
Thanks, Marna. To be honest, not many - most of the video clips were filmed on either a Canon 80D or Canon 5DmkIV DSLR. The quality will always be a little bit better with a DSLR and proper lens, but the main restrictions lie in not being able to zoom, pan or tilt properly. That’s why I got the Canon XA50. Perhaps I should make a video comparing the XA50 footage with that of my DSLR 🤔
That is a great idea. Perhaps I should rather buy a stabilizer for my vehicle and take the videos with my dslr. My problem currently is camera shake. Thanks for commenting
@@marnabuys9496, camera shake is a huge issue! I use a stabilisation effect in Premier Pro to make my footage appear smoother.
Hi Villiers, Do you mean the video editing software "Premier Pro"?
Yes, the editing software
Nog nooit mooier tonele as dit vd Kalahari in my lewe gesien nie. n 5 ster dokumenter.
Baie dankie, Alexander 🙏🏻
Uneventful..
