The "next" was a sad attempt to breathe new life in to it. The series is, well, a series. This movie was what Superman 4 was to that franchise.

In 1994, Pat Morita came to do another Karate Kid movie which was titled: The Next Karate Kid. I don't think it's actually canon but it was a standalone story where Mr. Miyagi travels to Boston. There, he takes care of and mentors another troubled student named Julie played by Hilary Swank. It was actually her breakout role in the movie industry. Although it's not one of the best stories in the Karate Kid franchise, I do recommend it because Mr. Miyagi ends up taking another student under his wing and it was the last time he played the character. His name is referenced plenty of times in the Netflix Cobra Kai series but this was essentially the last film he did with Ralph and Daniel's storyline concluded.
He passed away in 2005 at the age of 73 years old.
That movie sucked so bad. I would not even call it a b movie. A better movie is a 80's Karate Kid clone with bad acting but much better fights and Van Damme called No Retreat No Surrender.
It stars Miyagi, so it IS part of the Miyagi universe, so it IS canon... My source? Cobra Kai producers and writers...

It's not so much that its not canon, just that it takes place in Boston so what happens in that movie has nothing to do with the karate scene in Reseda, California.
11:30 Ralph Macchio was the anti-Seinfeld. Robin Lively who played Jessica was only 16 when filming started so Ralph had them change the script so they would be friends instead of romantic partners. Stand up dude 👍

He gained 50 pounds and grew 3 inches on that flight.

I loved Kreese's punishment of going broke and going nine months without one student in his dojo. Miyagi is right, it's a fate worse than death. Couldn't think of a better villain.

We were led to believe in KK2 that they went to Japan somewhat shortly after the first tournament (tho I could be wrong) and we see them return from Japan after Kreese meets with Silver.
@@AB-nk5wvpart 2 actually starts 6 months after the tournament. Daniel arrives at the house right after the prom and is bitching about the car and Ali dumping him. They were in Okinawa I would say a month tops.

Please tell me you will also be watching "The Next Karate Kid". It also has Mr. Miyagi. There MIGHT be references to it in the "Cobra Kai" show, so it would be a good idea to watch it.
The bullies go to the unfinished store and turn off the lights is part of the psychological warfare that is repeated when Mr. Miyagi throws Mike Barnes into the lights (turning them off) and then tosses the bullies into the unfinished dojo. Most people don't notice this nuance.
If any of the Karate Kid 1,2,3 movies and The New Karate Kid(2010, Hilary Swank) movie weren’t connected to the Cobra Kai Series, we wouldn’t tell you to watch them to enjoy the Cobra Kai series story even more. You’ll be happy that you saw the movies while watching the series. Trust us. You’re gonna freak when you start the Cobra Kai series! It’s all canon. You are very lucky since you won’t have to wait for the latest season of Cobra Kai to start while going through each season in order. Waiting is the hard part for the fans! Can’t wait to see your journey through Cobra Kai.

Daniel Couldn't do the Crane again, Terry paid off the board of the All Valley to change to rules to no longer allow head or maybe it was just face, attacks. Specifically so he couldn't use the crane technique again.

Seagal is definitely the biggest joke of all the late 80s and early 90s action movie stars. Van Damme had awesome movies like Bloodsport, Double Impact, Lionheart, The Kickboxer. All Seagal ever had was Under Siege.

Back in the early 90's I went through a serious martial arts phase that ended with me taking classes at rival schools on alternate days of the week. One was a commercial studio with a three-year contract, the other was a guy who used to teach there but got run out due to "bid'nis." Our classes were in wherever could rent the room for a month in the winter, and in the park under the trees in the arboretum when the weather was good. The second guy knew I was still at the first place. If the First guy knew I was taking classes from the second guy, I might have "stepped into that kick" a time or two. Neither but much emphasis on tournaments.
To give you an idea of how this series attached itself to the martial arts community, one night when were at the second place in a real building, a woman who was also at both places was getting ready for a tournament. I was sparring with her and I normally had great control (meaning I could throw full speed punches and kicks but stop just short of actual contact). One time, she actually stepped into the kick I threw. It was a spinning back kick I threw to keep her from jumping in. She jumped in faster than I expected and caught her in the chest hard enough to stop the round. I felt really bad about it (obviously) and the instructor made the Myagi noise, clapped his hands once, and started rubbing them together. The implications was that he was going to do to her chesticle what Myagi did to Daniels leg int he first movie. We were all comfortable enough around each other to know it was joke and take it as one. But the fact that that simple action of the clap and hand rub was instantly understood about the 6 or so of us who were standing there, 10 years after the movie came out, is a testament to how pervasive it was in that world.
There’s actually another movie called The Next Karate Kid with a female lead and after that there’s a Netflix show called Cobra Kai that picks up after it!! I hope you react to both because I love them 💯

the 80's for me was 8 to 18 years old... and I can tell you for certain, it was the best decade. Music and movies were on fire, the space program was sending shuttles to space and back again, Reagan was like having your grandpa running everything (in a good way), it wasn't perfect, but I have dreams every so often that I'm back there again. it really was a magical time...

During the making of these film Martin Kove was supposed to have a larger role but he was filming another show at the same time. Then the character Terry Silver played by Thomas Ian Griffith never would have existed. The original idea was John Kreese was going to train Daniel but since Martin wasn’t really available as much as the production team wanted they had to create a new villain to fill in the gap.
You will absolutely love 'Cobra Kai'. The sixth, and final, season will be out on Netflix in a few weeks. I lost it when you called Terry Silver "Walmart Steven Seagal". 🙂🍿😂😭

This movie isn't actually the end of the Karate Kid trilogy. There is the 1994 film "The Next Karate Kid" in which Hillary Swank replaces Daniel as the main character with Mr. Miyagi and it take place outside of California. You can check that movie out if you like but you don't have to in order to watch Cobra Kai. Cobra Kai is a great series as a sequel to the Karate Kid films and has many callbacks to the first three films.

So between this film and Cobra Kai, there are two other films. The first is The Next Karate Kid, in which Mr. Miyagi teaches Hilary Swank karate. The second is the 2010 Karate Kid with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith. There's also an animated tv series.

It's been said that Terry Silver is one physical deformity away from being a "Captain Planet" villain, or one "take over the world" plot away from being a Bond villain.
The magic moment of this film was just as Daniel was about to start back up he stopped and gave a bow to the bonsai tree showing that he finally understood Miyagi.
The first six episodes of the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai actually debut on Netflix this Thursday, July 18.
I have left is The Next Karate Kid, The Karate Kid remake, and the Cobra Kai series. And the reason why you should also watch the Karate Kid remake is cuz there is a new cricket film coming out next year and it's actually going to be starring Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio portraying their parts from their karate kid movie

This is the last Karate Kid with the Daniel character but not the last movie. The next movie is The Next Karate Kid(1994) which still has Mr. Miyagi in it. Also, it’s a remake The Karate Kid(2010) which is on Netflix right now. The 2010 remake has Jackie Chan as Mr. Hun(Kung Fu master instead of Karate tho) and it’s talks about a movie being made where Mr. Hun and Daniel cross paths.

Karate Kid 3 is the most unintentionally hilarious over the top movie of all time. I do love how they tell you quickly in the beginning that Daniel gets a bye to the finals for some reason since I assume the budget was very small for a 400 person tournament this time. Also, Daniel has somehow gained 50 pounds and a J-Lo a$$ on the plane ride from Okinawa back to California.
His brains sank into his butt, since he seems to have forgotten every lesson from the previous movies 🙃

While I don't think it's anyone's favorite movie in the franchise, I do think The Next Karate Kid is worth checking out as well, if only for all the additional Mr. Miyagi stuff. The overall movie isn't all that great, but Mr. Miyagi is wonderful as always, and you get to learn a little more about him.
You are going to LOVE Cobra Kai, because it answers SO many of the smart questions you ask here--including the ones I didn't think HAD an answer.
Thomas Ian Griffith (Terry Silver) grew into a very fine actor, and does even better work behind the camera, I think... but I'm pretty sure this was his very first movie. His height does a lot to hide it, especially to Ralph Macchio who is pretty much this size to this very day, but he's actually younger than Ralph Macchio.
So if you want to get technical, the actual Karate "Kid" here is Thomas Ian Griffith. :P
Cobra Kai does a really fine job of calling back to all three movies, if you give it time.
This one is definitly not my favourite. But you will have needed to have watched it in preparation for Cobra Kai. I'm glad you decided to start watching it, because it's really awesome!
I always thought this movie would have been a lot better if the reveal that Silver was with Kreese all along was a surprise to the audience.
Personally recommend to go for Cobra Kai next, while the trilogy is fresh. Go back for the other movies later if you do.

Angela reason why you should also watch The Next Karate Kid is because there is rumors for the final season of Cobra Kai some of it may be tied in to that movie. So honestly is best to finish off all the cranky movies even the remake before Cobra Kai so you will be fully 100% caught up

In the movies, yes this is the end of Daniel's story. The next movie, aptly called The Next Karate Kid stars someone else completely different and you already know about the Jayden Smith movie. Watch those two before the Cobra Kai show

Tomas Ian Griffith who plays Terry Silver was born in 1962, whereas Ralph Macchio was born in 1961. Funny how he looks old enough to play a Vietnam War veteran and Ralph looked young enough in 1982-83 to play a teenager who wasn’t 18 yet. Remember, it was the All Valley under 18 Karaté Tournament, lol.
And this movie was the first time they used the phrase: Cobra Kai never dies.

Little did Pat Morita know while playing Mr. Takahasi on Happy Days that he would be beating up teenagers with karate in a series of classic movies a decade later.
There is a 4th movie with Hillary Swank called The Next Karate Kid and a remake in 2007 called The Karate Kid with Jackie Chan and Jayden Smith which was meh but glad youre going to watch Cobra Kai series after this. You wont be disappointed. 👍🏼

IMHO: This ending had a better ending fight than the 1st movie. It's OK to lose, but you must not give into fear.

Mike Barnes (kid who he fights at the end) plays Deacon Sharp on The Bold And the Beautiful/ Young and the Restless soap operas.
Picking a standout scene would be tough. Probably Miyagi taking apart Barnes, Kreese and Silver all on his own, but I especially love the scene of Daniel breaking the wooden dummy. The dichotomy between achieving a huge win and being at your lowest point is fascinating. Inside Out 2 does a similar thing and that was probably my favorite scene in that movie too. I have a whole video about why this movie is good and I know it's all bullshit. This is the low point of the trilogy, but weirdly, Cobra Kai makes it a better movie in the same way Kenobi made Revenge of the Sith better. I'm so stoked for season 6 this Thursday!
The problem with fighting with anger in your heart: when wood is stiff, it breaks. but when wood is flexible, it can handle life and remains strong. Fighting with anger makes you focus on power instead of being centered and loose.

You'll need to watch Cobra Kai to find out this exact detail and you might miss the detail on your first run-through of the series if you aren't fully connecting the dots between the series and the movie parts.
