Fun story, back in 2000, i was working at a small restaurant on Rt 66 when a couple guys came in. It was in the early afternoon after lunch and we weren't busy at all, so we all got to talking, and they said that they were writing an animated movie about Rt 66 for Pixar. We talked for a couple hours the whole time they were scribbling notes and things. Well, fast forward a few years and sure enough, the movie Cars comes out, and not only did several of the things we chatted about end up in the movie, but a friend of mine got a letter from them telling her how grateful they were, and letting her know that they used her as the inspiration for Sally. To this day she will never shut up about it lol

The King was actually voiced by retired NASCAR driver Richard Petty. Whose racing nickname was in fact “The King”. He was my mom’s favorite driver. Darrell Cartrip was voiced by another retired driver, Darrel Waltrip. His catchphrase was “Boogity, boogity, boogity! Let’s go racing boys!” His brother Michael was also a driver for many years. The car Junior was voiced by semi-retired driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. Chick loosely resembles his father, Dale Sr. There were several NASCAR cameos in this movie.
PS Mater being able to drive backwards like he can was inspired by a real person. His name was Dean Walker and he had the ability to turn his feet around backwards.

Richard Petty has 200 wins in NASCAR, to put that in perspective the next closest competitor is David Pearson at 105 wins and the next is Jeff Gordon at 93 wins. Darrell Waltrip has 84 wins, Dale Sr. has 76, Dale Jr has 26 wins. But individual wins is not everything in NASCAR, Richard may have 200 wins but has only 7 Championships, where as Dale Sr has only 76 wins, but also has 7 Championships.
I grew up in a family that loved racing, I've met Jeff Gordon, Adam Petty, Richard Petty, Kyle Petty, John Andretti, Buckshot Jones and some other racers from other types of racing. And in my experience Jeff Gordon was very much like Lightening McQueen (it was also earlier in his career and he was "Wonder Boy" as nicknamed by Dale Sr.) and Richard Petty was very much as he is in the movie, wiser and more aware of all that goes into it. I was only like 12 years old when I met him, but he gave me a few moments of his time and asked me what I liked about racing and it was just super cool.

4:47 If there is an accident and the track can be cleared relatively quickly, a safety car or "Pacecar" as they call it in NASCAR comes out. When this car comes out, cars cannot overtake and must always be behind the slow-moving pacecar to give time for the track to be cleared. Although in crashes like these it is more likely that they will stop the race completely until the track is clear.

One thing about old school animation is that it is for both kids and adults. There is also adult humor in them too! Pixar also does really deep dives into the theme of their stories. Case in point, there are car people, like Jay Leno, who has an amazing car collection. Several of the characters are also voiced by real racing drivers. If you're a gearhead, race fan, or car person, there is so much to this! Oh, and I LOVED when you said 'I bet Doc is a secret racecar!' Perfect! Yeah, I have yet to be disappointed with anything Pixar has made!

In defense of the Cars logic argument and how it works, this is a universe where:
    * Toys come to life with no explanation
    * Bugs have their own utopia
    * Monsters portal jump/time travel to collect screams to power their world
    * Fish can swim all across the ocean and survive, have real estate, have short-term memory loss, male clown fish don’t turn female after their wives die, and fish can apparently drive trucks
    * Superheroes have powers with no explanation on where they got them and how they are able to pass them on to their offsprings
    * Rats know how to cook without spreading diseases
    * Humans have polluted Earth causing them to leave and be brainwashed by artificial intelligence (that’s likely to happen)
    * An old man is able to lift his house off the ground with balloons which is impossible in every way, they never explain the process and how he set it all up in one night, and that overall creates such a big plot hole in the movie itself because he somehow has the money to pull off a stunt like that so he would’ve had enough money to go to Paradise Falls, and regardless he doesn’t have enough balloons to lift his house anyway
    * There’s magic and spells in Scotland
    * The voices in your head are apparently their own sentient beings
    * Humans are living during the age of the dinosaurs which never happened
    * A boy enters the world of the dead by playing a guitar
    * Technology exists in a medieval, fantasy world
    * The idea behind your personality is through mentoring from a past soul, your soul can transfer into animals, you can have a pulse when you’re dead apparently, and the very first souls never got mentoring
    * Sea monsters can turn into humans with no explanation
    * A girl turns into a panda due to a family curse
    * Traveling at light speed can result in two different timelines
    * The four elements of Earth have their own government, economy, and civilization
All of this, but you need an explanation on talking cars?

What’s the ‘technology exists in a medieval, fantasy world’ one? I can identify almost everything listed-even several movies I haven’t seen and knew absolutely nothing about until reading this (Soul, Elementals, Lightyear)-but that one’s eluding me. I’m guessing either that or the “humans living with dinosaurs” thing is Moana, but I have no real idea; I haven’t seen that either. (Much as I still love and respect Pixar, I’ve grown extremely weary of Disney, and tend to not even be interested in watching reactions to most of their more recent works-even with Pixar. Nobody asked, but what the hell.)

This movie came out when I was 13. The scene with the song Life is a Highway stuck with me so much that, along with the movie Smokey and the Bandit (I recommend watching it), it inspired me to eventually become a truck driver. I'm now in my 7th year of doing it and approaching the million mile mark. Having lived on the highways of the US really adds a depth to this movie for me. I've been through the towns like Radiator Springs and seen the sadness. I've driven down little winding two lane highways through Monument Valley. This movie really captures it so well.

The animated 'bugs' you see when Lightning and Sally stop outside the old hotel are actually mini Volkswagen Beetles, a car made by Volkswagen from 1938 until 2003. Designed as a cheap family car, they were very popular and easy to maintain and run, they were really a thing during the 1960s. Because they were called Beetles, they gained the nickname "Bugs", hence why the flying "bugs" are VW Beetles. There was even a movie series in the 60's/70's called "The Love Bug" about a sentient VW Beetle, who takes part in races.

Doc's story is completely true of the real Twin H Hudson Hornet. Except the Hornet was not banned out of malice. NASCAR rules required race cars be actual stock cars, with a whole lot of modifications, but the base car had to actually sell in a certain volume from dealers. Hudson had been bought out but the new owners kept the name active and kept building the cars, and they sold well. But, the styling was getting dated after a few years, sales declined, and the Hudson name was retired. That's why the door was CV losed to the Hornet after only a few years.

The "Hudson Hornet" was a famous, extremely successful NASCAR vehicle (the "Fabulous Hudson Hornet" was a real race car). It's road models were some of the fastest of the time, due to an ingenious chassis design that allowed for very low center of gravity (helps with handling.. so yeah, easy to control and drive, and corners well).
The King was based on, like, late 60's NASCAR models with experimental aerodynamics, notably the "Dodge Charger Daytona" and the "Plymouth Superbird" (Plymouth had some good car names, like one called the "Road Runner", complete with the cartoon version of the bird being used as a logo. Those had some road models released, and they actually looked like that, they look insane (The spoiler was that tall so that it was possible to see out the back window).

You have to quit trying to apply logic to animated movies and just go with it, man.
You are right about animated movies having something for everyone, kids, adults, kids living in an adult body, everyone. I think animated movies are my favourite form of entertainment because they can go anywhere, do anything and can apply some real creativity in telling a story in ways that aren't possible or at least very difficult with live action.

In the early days, there werent freeways. Mist cars only had a 2 speed transmission and could not do more than 50mph.
As cars became more common, they connected all the main roads from town to town, so a drive acrossed the country usually involved driving straight down the small town main steeets, with lower in town speed limits and more stops.
In the 1950's, after world war 2, we saw the "Autobahn", the german freeway system. It was designed to quickly roll out military equipment, and double as runways if needed.
After millions of veterans returned from ww2, a bunch of business shut down during the war, and there were now millions of out of work veterans. The freeway interstate project was sort of a get back to work project to help veterans, many who left without ant schooling or appreciable life skills.
As they put in freeways, truck stops and other businesses moved to the new freeways and on ramps, and many small towns were basically shut down and forgotten.
The Hudson hornet domminated NASCAR in the early 50's. This was right as the i-6 engine was going away and v-8's were starting to take over. Improvements in car design also required higher speed racetracks, many of which were still dirt or poorly paved. Many race tracks were "brick roads".
The racetracks were revamped and retro fitted with paved roads, guard rails, and banked turns to allow higher speeds. The older i-6 engines were no longer viable, and those cars were abandoned.

Larry the Cable Guy is originally from the same state I am (Nebraska), but went to college in Alabama and adopted a rural Deep South accent as part of his act. Everybody thinks they had to "fix" the traffic light, but it was never broken! In smaller towns that normally don't have enough traffic to really justify using it, they will change it to just a flashing yellow and it is basically treated as a 4 way stop sign instead...unless there are signs pointing out otherwise, like sometimes it's just 2 ways stop and the other 2 yield.

    1. Chick Hicks is the kind of villain that is both broken and pure evil if you ask me. He keeps losing in races so he feels like a nobody. And, McQueen didn’t help make it better at all. McQueen kept taunting Chick as well. That’s the part where he’s broken. He’s also just as arrogant as McQueen was and will do anything just to win and receive the fame and glory all for himself, even if it means severely damaging anyone like Mr. The King. That’s the part where he’s pure evil.
    2. Those two minivans do show up as cameos in only one scene in the second film.
    3. Maybe Chick was using his ID as Thunder in an intentionally positive way so McQueen would never taunt him as Thunder again.
    4. I really thought Rascal Flatts actually did the original version of Life Is A Highway.
    5. I always wondered myself as to why McQueen would just straight up let Chick win in the first place, no joke intended. Apparently, I realized he chose to lose cuz of what Doc said bout the trophies just being empty ass cups. They’re just materialistic objects. McQueen does win four more races later on, and with it, four piston cups, more than Doc Hudson.
    6. I realized something bout Doc sometime recently ago. Doc Hudson was actually a play on words for Rock Hudson, whoever he was.
    7. Doc Hudson won’t be in the second film cuz he died of cancer. Possibly lung cancer. He will be in the third film though but as cameos.
    8. You even see in the third film exactly how Doc made that wreck in 1954.
    9. The minute I heard Ramon making fun of McQueen for announcing how Doc used to be a famous racecar, I realized it was Banzai. And, I was a kid back then.
    10. If you know this guy, Isaac Carlson, he gives out theories including one being how the living cars and their world came to being.
    11. Dinoco was actually that company that you saw in Toy Story. That was, if you ever saw Toy Story.
    12. Chick knocks over cars all the damn time, hence, the apparent reason as to why his number is 86. He 86es cars including McQueen and The King.
    13. I always keep thinking that McQueen just automatically drove away quickly not by will as soon as Mater released him from the parking boot. I really don’t know if he willfully drove away from Radiator Springs though.
    14. It’s actually natural for you to ponder how shit worked with those cars. Don’t go blaming yourself. Blame the technical logic you grew up knowing.
    15. That blimp had the name Lightyear on it as did McQueen’s tires as a nodoff to Buzz Lightyear.
    16. Cars 2 will have Alfred Pennyworth in it as well as Gusteau’s Restaurant just in case you’d love to know a couple more things bout the future of Cars.
    17. There’s gonna be a Cars 4 coming next year.
    18. Chick will also definitely be in the third film rubbing his trophy in McQueen’s face meaning he still only gives a shit bout winning. But, then again, who wouldn’t give a shit bout winning?
    19. Between Cars and Night At The Museum, Idk which one was the very first film where I ever saw Owen Wilson. It was the first film I ever Paul Newman. I remember seeing another movie with him afterwards but it was an old timey movie and I just can’t place the name. Black and white color is all I remember there.

Talking about "attention to detail", if you look closely at the background in some shots, some of the the hills and mesas resemble cars. one of the best overall views is at 25:37 . look at the big vehicle hood to the left of center.
In at least one scene the fins of a Cadillac can be easily be seen sticking up out of the ground similar to Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo Texas.
