This series actually originally started out as a TH-cam original, but then got so popular Netflix picked it up after TH-cam stop doing original work

    • @joemckim1183

Technically the first 2 seasons aired on TH-cam and had a niche following. But the other TH-cam original shows bombed so TH-cam got out of the original programming game. So they let them shop the show to other streaming platforms and Netflix was the network they came to a deal with. The first 2 seasons of Cobra Kai are available for free on TH-cam now. But once the show went to Netflix it went from being a niche audience to being very popular.

I do love how the show runners respect the movies. When "Cobra Kai" came out, my friends were saying that it's a role reversal story and Johnny is now the hero. I thought, no, it's more complex than that: they're both older, they're both haunted by the past and they're both trying do the best with what they've got.

I was in high school about 30 years ago so I don't remember it super well. I hung out with the skater crowd we had our table in the cafeteria but I don't think we really paid attention to what the other tables were doing. I do recall talking to pretty much anyone though. It's not like there were groups who wouldn't talk to any other groups.

I remember my high school years. And that is pretty much how the students were to one another. The jocks hung out with the jocks. The academics hung out with the academics. The hip hop posers hung out with the hip hop posers (there weren't any black kids in my town, so the closest thing we had were a bunch of white kids dressing and acting like gangsta rappers, which was hilarious because they were anything but gangsta).
I was a total reject. I would have hung out with Eli and Demitri at lunch, mainly because they would be the only ones to accept me. I wasn't good enough at school work to hang with the academics. I wasn't good enough at athletics to hang with the jocks. And I got stuck with a reputation for being a loser really early in life, and the popular kids Wouldn't let anyone forget it.

From the few repressed memories I can dredge up, I remember that I drifted aimlessly through the various social strata. I never "belonged" to any particular group or clique. Everybody thought I was an "okay" guy, I was never bullied by anyone, but the price I paid for never completely aligning was never having any real friends. The only reason it didn't teally bother me is that I was blessed with the knowledge that high school isn't the real world and it doesn't matter anyway.😂

Something I love about this show, is the writers did not use one-dimensional characters, Daniel being good and kind, he lets himself manipulate by the guy dining at his home and immediately judges Johnny without trying to get the two versions. Johnny himself is not a bad guy per-se, he wants to help, but still has some bully attitudes.
Every character has history, challenges, positives and negatives. Some times it is hard to know who you want to root for.

Yep, so in a reversal of the original film, Johnny is now living in a run-down apartment complex, while Daniel is a wealthy owner of a car dealership that specializes in Japanese brands. He also restarted Cobra Kai to be Miguel's Mr. Miyagi, while Daniel had some painful memories of high school resurface.

There's a great but VERY subtle callback that you may have missed.
When Kyler is over at the LaRusso's for dinner, Daniel asks "Is that how you hurt your hand too?" In the first Karate Kid when Mr. Miyagi comes over to fix the LaRusso's sink, he asks Daniel what happened to his eye. Daniel lies and says he fell off his bike. Mr. Miyagi then says "Lucky no hurt hand too."

This was written by true fans of the Karate Kid franchise. They wanted to honor it, and continue the story in the best way possible, while allowing the characters to be true to themselves as they grew and changed. You are in for an amazing ride. Be ready for lots of laughs, lots of tears, and lots of callbacks and characters from the three films with Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi. The legacy will love on...
What I will say is that there is a character from The Next Karate Kid (which you haven't watched yet) that many in the fandom hope makes an appearance in the sixth and final season of the show. The Next Karate Kid herself, Julie Pierce played by two-time Best Actress Oscar-winner Hillary Swank. She was also a student of Mr. Miyagi...it would be cool to see her in the show, even if just for a few scenes in an episode. There has been a lot of theories as her at this time...but until and unless Hillary Swank shows up, that's all they can be.

And here we are, a wonderful blend of nostalgia and legacy in the story of Cobra Kai. Mainly following Johnny this time, the roles are reversed with Daniel being the better off guy, and the two rivals are now embarking to become senseis. For Johnny however it's also a means of growing, since he is very out of touch at this point, Daniel is not without his flaws though, and a legacy continues in the next generation such as Sam and Miguel. But it's a great show - I mean it debuted on TH-cam Red, and nobody cared about TH-cam Red, that's just how good it is.

The two writers for Cobra Kai are Karate Kid enthusiasts but really needed support from the two main characters of the Karate Kid (Ralph and Billy) to make it happen. Both Ralph and Billy knew the script wouldn't ridicule the franchise in anyway but respect it. That's what makes Cobra Kai so special, I was shocked how good the writing was in this series.

You're too young to understand how pervasive Johnny's mentality is in a lot of the men that grew up in the 80's. The only glory they ever had was in high school and their lives didn't turn out the way everyone claimed it would. (Also watch Fight Club to verify this) That split second when Daniel landed the Crane kick is why Johnny is so angry. Daniel got everything. Johnny got nothing. For the rest of their lives. (up until this point) Johnny may not be Mr. Miyagi, but his teaching is effective for Miguel. They're different than Daniel and Miyagi and it works for them. They're both the same. Actually, when Johnny told Miguel about "asthma and other made up decease", he's not fully wrong. Asthma is a psychosomatic decease for the most part (not always, sometimes allergic or infective too), so it really can be resolved by something like emotion control, working on self-confidence and etc. Most of that Miguel can get from karate lessons with Johnny, so it would work for him :)

I'm so excited that you're starting on the "Cobra Kai" journey.
The first two(I think) seasons started on the TH-cam Red channel here on TH-cam before Netflix picked it up.

I had both allergy-induced and exercise-induced asthma growing up (thankfully it got a lot milder around the time I graduated high school), so I totally understand wanting to fight anyone foolish enough to try to write asthma off as "fake". This series was actually the reason I got TH-cam Red (as the premium membership was called back in the day), as I was a fan of the original movies and found out that the show was being co-produced by William Zabka (Johnny) and Ralph Macchio (Daniel), so I was fairly confident it would respect the source material a lot better than a lot of modern sequels/remakes of old classics do.

I didn't realize you were going to start Cobra Kai so quickly. I was going to suggest that before this you watch a youtube video about how Daniel was actually the bad guy in the Karate Kid. It shouldn't be taken 100% seriously and should be considered mostly tongue in cheek, but gives an interesting perspective going into this. One thing that should be noted is that William Zapka said that he played Johny in the original film as going in the character just wanted to have the best summer ever.
You're going into this fresh off of the Karate Kid movies. Imagine what it was like for those of us that grew up with the Karate Kid movies, YEARS, really AGES later getting these characters back in our lives. It was just incredible.

This was fast and I'm here for it😁 As it's been already mentioned in the comments, this series started in 2018, 34 years after the first movie, and that's about where the story picks up as well. As for Daniel being in his "late thirties": Ralph macchio was in his late 50s there, only he kinda forgot to age👀
I'm looking forward to the rest of your Cobra Kai journey, and at some point before season 6 I'd recommend to watch The Next Karate Kid, especially if you miss Mr. Miyagi ;)

Vaccunia, The reason its highly regarded has everything to do with watching the film as a kid, and making heroes (and villains) of the characters, and then seeing them again out of the blue 40 odd years later on. I don't think it works the same if you just watch the film 3 weeks ago and do not suffer from nostalgia (or who knows what other syndrome). All in all, its not a bad series (not perfect), but it helps if you have watch ALL of the films, not just the first one.

Did you catch the parallels and flipping the script of Karate Kid. With Johny being an apartment maintenance man, like Miyagi was when he met Daniel and Johny beating up a bunch of kids like Miyagi did to him and his crew, though his was mostly for his car more than saving the kid, and then taking the kid under his wing. The basis is the same but the way he does it is very much different.

High school was pretty much that bad. I was one of the nerds and also one of the smallest kids in school. A weird fluke caused me to start my public school experience a year early, but if I let anyone know, I'm sure I would have been bullied more. That lasted until I made friends with my locker mate, the football team nose guard who was also the basketball team center. After that, I was just a normal kid having a normal high school experience. It's good to have friends. Thanks, Paul. You have no idea how you changed my life. 🙂

What an awesome reaction! You’re really picking up on a lot of the background vibe they’re dropping, and I think you’ll continue to be front row for this entire series. And thank you SO MUCH for not drudging through all six of the original Karate Kid movies before getting to this. The first two are awesome but it goes downhill like a broken roller coaster from there (although the third, which you did watch, will eventually come in handy for you).
Cobra Kai is amazing because it is modern, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, it gets powerful and deep, it’s lots of fun and great Karate, and it pays its respect in so many serious ways to the original (I’ll wait to comment on those until they happen, and I’m sure your amazing fanbase will beat me to it anyway when the time comes). For now, enjoy!
