"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
    “Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on TH-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on TH-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

Imagine if Bill Maher said this about Ukraine, ranting from the comfort of his LA studio, as Ukrainians are being bombed and shelled by Russia, telling the Ukrainians to surrender, and deal with being conquered, it would have been a shitshow. They should rename his show from 'Real Time" to "Real Shitty" because that's a true representation of what Maher will give you.

You can not claim a land because your supposedly great great ancestors over 3k years ago lived there, the same ancestors that may share less than 10% of your DNA. European Jews coming from Germany, Russia and Australia are less Semitic than the native Palestinians who have lived there for thousands of years. Arafat was being seen as too moderate, so Israel helped finance Hamas in the early days to de-legitimize Arafat. The people desperarely but democratically voted tor Hamas (in Gaza) BECAUSE Israel bombed PLO offices in Lebanon to smitherans and killed 20k Muslim.and Christian Arabs; and then Israel placed non-stop brutal economic sanctions on Gaza. Israel doesn't know how to share...and colonial settler terrorism in the West Bank is proof of that.

He's saying Palestinians need to be okay with compromising. There was never a Palestinian state that controlled the River to the Sea, so why do they somehow get rights to all of it? The Jews were there long before the Roman, Greek, and Muslim Arab invaders came (they all later took on the Arab identity after being conquered by the Arabs and in the mid 1900s took on the name Palestinians), and they had the land taken from them too. Is the solution to take it from them again and give it to the descendents of those who took it from them or came later on during their exile? Why can't the land be shared? Both group have historical claims to it and both have been mistreated. As long as either group rejects the option of splitting the land, there will not be peace.

    • @shumoon1
      @shumoon1 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +39

@@James-ny2xlNah, compromise is not what Maher was talking about. The whole monolog was about migration and how some groups had to that and cope. However, at 9:45 , he makes an exception for Israel: "They're not going anywhere." The clear implication is that the Palestinians have to go somewhere else.

    • @James-ny2xl
      @James-ny2xl 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@shumoon1 No, that's not at all what he said. Did you watch the original video? He was saying there needs to be a 2-state solution, and radical pro-Palestinian supports demanding the entire land (from the River to the Sea) be given to Palestine and continually rejecting agreements for a 2-state solution are holding them back from peace and from setting up a Palestinian nation. Saying Israel is not going anywhere means it's going to continue to be a country. If those radical supporters insist the only way for peace is to eradicate Israel and once again kick out Israelis from their ancestral homeland, there will not be peace. Both sides must compromise and accept a 2-state solution that doesn't include the genocide of the other side. Both sides have failed, and both must reform.

As an Irish person, I was disgusted about what Bill Maher said about Ireland... We had over 800 years of oppression and colonialism in the whole of Ireland... We fought the British tooth and nail to get our country back. We were starved, oppression, slaughtered and dehumanised until we clawed back most of the country. All but the tip as he so callously said... The British held on to Northern Ireland and they weren't blowing each other up as he put it. It was just as complicated as the situation in Palestine. Catholics had NO civil rights. They had homes taken off them and given to the Protestants. They weren't given jobs and they were terrorised, tortured and killed... After 30 years of "the troubles" people who hated each other and killed each others friends and family, sat together and finally fought hard "politically" for peace. That is why Ireland was the first European country to stand up for the Palestinians... Ireland supported Israel until 1967 while they were the oppressed. Now Ireland stand with the Palestinians. They are the oppressed so we will support them... Bill Maher is a joke! I won't watch his show again.

Just because somebody is "oppressed" doesn't automatically put them in the right. What a stupid take. If the Palestinians have been offered peace deals multiple times that they've rejected because they somehow think they'll get it all "from the river to the sea", and they continue to think violence is the way to achieve that goal, then their oppression is on them. But hey, it's a free country, please continue to be useful idiots for the arab world, who could have solved this issue easily 70 years ago by taking in an equal number of palestinian refugees as jews they'd just kicked out.

When I saw Bill Maher accept the definition of CRT from Ben Shapiro over an actual educator he had on the panel that very day, I realized he was too far gone. Accepting the definition without the nuance that takes to be a leftist, sorry bill. You want a complicated world to fit inside a neat little box, you're not on the team you think you are to begin with, but you are letting the opposition Define what that box is? That's the mental retirement that keeps Fox News in business.

The problem is that "critical race theory" in practice, as taught in SOME schools, often does go into fringe territory. I haven't seen the clip in question, but as a leftist myself, I've always viewed identity-based politics as a way to belittle class consciousness, because that's precisely how it's utilized. It's a lot easier to succeed in passing legislation that supports gay rights than it is to succeed in passing legislation that supports workers rights. You'd have to be a complete buffoon in order to deny that in the face of recent history.
Maher and Shapiro are still goofballs, though.

      MLK said it best.
"First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season."

@@ignatiusjackson235 Critical Race Theory is not about identity politics, but more about class difference originated in racism.
Critical race theory (CRT) is an interdisciplinary academic field devoted to analysing how social and political laws and media shape (and are shaped by) social conceptions of race and ethnicity. CRT also considers racism to be systemic in various laws and rules, and not only based on individuals' prejudices. The word critical in the name is an academic reference to critical thinking, critical theory, and scholarly criticism, rather than criticizing or blaming individuals.

@@zensoredparagonbytes3985 a.k.a. Identity Politics. Are you seriously that daft, or do you just expect the rest of us to be so?
I'm not trying to be rude either. I genuinely don't understand how anybody could lack so much in the way self-awareness. Are you trying to redefine "identity politics" or do you really think that what you described doesn't qualify as such? Either way, those mental gymnastics are impressive.
Most importantly, however, it's worth noting that race-baiting is by far the EASIEST way to divide the working class. More often than not, CRT ends up playing right into that time-tested divide-and-conquer tactic, regardless of how well-intentioned it may be.
You can pretend that's not the case all you like, but every development in recorded history and basic human psychology suggests otherwise.

I think there are many parallels with how the native people in the Americas were treated and the Palestinians now and in the last century. @@riiraa881 I absolutely agree that many Western European nations have done horrible things, including slave trade, genocide and oppression thought there colonies. But please don’t forget this has been done by many other nations in the world.
Japan for example, with its long period of slaughter in most of Asia. Including horrible concentration camps with crimes similar to that of Mengele. Or what about the genocides in the Balkans? Or the Armenian genocide?
Earlier the Vikings murdered and pillaged all throughout Europe, or the Arabs taking most land around the Mediterranean in the Middle Ages. Southern Europe obviously also has a large history of conquest, with the Roman Empire and in the late Middle Ages Spain.
Then there is Russia with many Tsars murdering like there was no tomorrow. Not to mention Stalin who is responsible for more killings than the nazis. Than there is MAO who is world champion in killing the most amount of people. Or what about Pol Pot who murdered over 2 million people. Rwanda comes to mind, but to be fair, this was mainly caused by colonialism and the Catholic Church.
That last party is also responsible for millions of deaths, and the Vatican is an official country so I assume that counts. So it is a global phenomena, genocide and mass murder, not just Western Europe.
