"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on TH-cam. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on TH-cam, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

This “hoax” washed away my cousin’s trailer in Tennessee, has my brother and his friends stuck in the mountains near Asheville, and has one of my best friends and his wife without power in Columbia. Fortunately they are all OK

Helene was stronger, because the Gulf of Mexico is warmer than usual. The warn water is LIKE MANNA for hurricanes. The Gulf Stream is weakening and possibly going to collapse.
The strongest hurricane to ever hit Florida is the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935. It was a cat 5 with 185 mph winds. It also strengthened from a tropical storm to a cat 5 in one or two days I believe. Even back then crazy hurricanes could happen.

I've read that the local red states government have now began providing emergency bootstraps to the citizens affected by the hurricane. Give everybody notice that in five years, every state government office is closing, and federal government office will no longer interact within the state. Then allow people to move into other states as long as they sign a binding legal contract saying they will abide by the laws and offices of the state. When Hurricane Sandy was going on here on the NJ coast, my father had a small generator to which he kept the fridge running for us and a couple neighbors and kept power in one room for us to charge our phones and watch the weather channel.
The wide spread damage done by the Hurricane was bad enough, now comes the damage of those pushing obviously ridiculous conspiracies on top of THIS tragedy.
You can't reach them. You can only sow doubt and poke holes in their beliefs. Any that start thinking critically to try and better argue why and how they are "right", those MIGHT accidentally untangle themselves. If you see them experiencing a crisis of faith, that's when you offer an olive branch and point them to actual resources and reasoned arguments.
Literally any other time? You're just wasting your effort.
I live an hour from Boone where I went to college. The effect the hurricane had on a mountain town like that is heartbreaking, to say the least. And the fact that people are actually calling this a hoax is the most infuriating thing I've had to witness in a very long time.

On “how to get through to these people” - the problem with trying to reach them isn’t that they’re “insane,” it’s that they entirely lack any sort of critical thinking or rhetorical analysis skills. So over the years, they’ve become buried under a mountain of disinformation, which they believe either due to emotional manipulation, falling for various rhetorical trickery, or just because it confirms their worldview. They have to be taught how to dig themselves out of that, it’s the only way.

Have you ever been through an hurricane. The major winds started around 10:00pm on Friday night. The power went out at 1:00am Saturday morning. The winds got to about 40 mph around 8:00am Saturday morning. We got power back last night. The roads couldn't be seen because of tree branches and leaves. You really couldn't couldn't see the road because the trees dumped every leaf and small to large branches. Trees were still falling today because Debby flooded us and then Helene wrecked the root systems. I've done hurricanes before. This was the first one to scare me.

It’s really not a hoax, I got hit by helene tomorrow will be my 5th day without power, hot water or air conditioning, I have to charge my phone with the port in my car. A couple gas stations have finally starting opening up around town, which two days ago we didn’t have any, and lines out of the county were 2-3 hours long, dozens of counties in my state have applied for FEMA aid. In my town 17/25 thousand still don’t have power and that’s been them working for days with outside help. It’s expected we won’t have power in our homes for up to 2 weeks and we’re the lucky ones almost 200 people have died now I think, and thousands have lost their homes.
I live an hour and a half south of Asheville in SC. I can assure you it's not a hoax. Lost power for three days. got it back this morning. But there's still thousands without power and there's still lots of work to be done to get back to normal.

Helene was eerly similar to Hurricane Connie and Diane of 1955 and Hazel of 1954. North Carolina was struck by these 3 hurricanes in a one year period. Hazel was a cat 4 that struck in October of 1954 mind you. Connie was another cat 4 and just a week later cat 2 Diane struck. These storms caused catastrophic flooding to multiple states like Helene. The damage pictures were insane.

I was in a catagory 1 hurricane. I was terrified. I can't imagine going thru this hurricane. I was so afraid for the East Coast states when I heard it was going to come ashore as a catagory 4 hurricane.
