HGUC 1/144 Guntank Review - Hobby Clubhouse | Gundam 0079 Model and Gunpla

  • Bandai's HGUC RX-75 Guntank came out in 2000 but holds its own against the RX-78 and Guncannon from 15 years into the future. Still a key part of a White Base Team trio, this kit is still the most modern 1/144 rendition of the MS, so it's great to know this is also one of the best Guntanks you can buy.

    On the opposite end of the spectrum the mg guntank is probably one of the best mgs ever made, fully detalied inner frame, a surprising amount of gimmicks and articulation, and 1/100 figures of hayato, ryu, bright, and fraw

    The Guntank's been seeing something of a resurgence lately due to the popularity of Gundam Evolution, and indeed for an HGUC kit from 2000 the kit itself holds up remarkably well against modern HGUC's. Sure one can complain about the bad gating, seamlines, and the limited arm articulation, but honestly most of these are stuff you don't really need a Revive update for considering the rest of the kit is mostly great already.

    IIRC, The in-universe Guntank completely didn't have any waist rotation until a modification was made where the core block system was removed so this kit has more articulation than the Guntank pre-upgrade

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The Guntank also appeared in the show so sparsely that the waist is never seen moving there either. I imagine the thing would topple over if the waist turned a lot and the guns were fired...

    I really appreciate Bandai for reprinting this kit as often as they do (basically every restock order includes it lol). It's a nice simple kit that avoids a lot of the problems that the "more" articulated kits of the era it was originally released, but unlike those kits you won't feel disappointed with any lack of articulation because the expectations are lower. Plus to be honest that *one* scene from 08th MS team is enough to warrant me loving mine, not so much the original series/compilations lol.
    Luckily this kit also usually avoids scalpers so it's one of the few kits you can buy during this Gunpla shortage for anywhere near retail price.

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've noticed as well how the Guntank flies under the radar of scalpers. I guess its adorably oddball look is natural camouflage and the cool and edgy kits get poached to all hell
      Wished Bandai printed the classic Guncannon as often too

      You're very welcome, glad you really enjoy the videos. So many old kits are interesting to cover, especially when they've become detached from their own time and background, so it's great to document them like this rather than judge them harshly for being outdated (which they often are, but it's not always a death sentence)

    Hello, I just discovered your channel recently and saw your community post about your hiatus. Do take your time to come back, but when you do, please continue reviewing these older kits!
    It's wonderful to see these being fully featured as a lot of review channels tend to skim over things like early HGs and non-grades, at least in English. I'm still pretty new to gunpla myself, but you have helped a lot in learning to appreciate a lot of older kits. The Zaku 1, for instance, is now something I'm actively hunting for instead of assuming it's a shelf warmer for the origin versions.
    Thank you if you read this, and please do take care.

    Speaking of hidden gem kit, HGUC Asshimar really blew me away when I built it a few year ago.
    It's able to transform completely with no part swapping which is incredible for an old kit like that.

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I love the Asshimar a ton too, and I have one permenantly on display. The head is amazing with the details inside and clear piece covering it up, and there's a stand too so you have everything you need inside the box
      And it's hard not to love the funky orange-yellow color

    • @azymorath
      @azymorath 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the Asshimar is awesome. Years ago I expected an evolution of the design with the release of the HG Anksha, but it ended up being sorta underwhelming with the transformation degrading to part-swapping.

    With the one that I just finished, one other thing to note is that there seems to have been some wear on the molds for the kit since there can be some issues with fit on parts as well so you may need to thin out some pegs and/or drill out some of the slots for them.

  • @azymorath
    @azymorath 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wouldn't really call the Guntank goofy, that trait IMHO is just due to design including the core block system, thus making so like it looks "standing", given the torso shape.
    Once later reimaginations like the Origin give it a lower profile, the looks improve greatly (but I think the original Guntank has better arms over the Early Type.

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People aren't 100% sure, but there's the belief that the Guntank is among the things forced upon the animation by Clover, who also demanded the whole core block thing because robots must combine. As a kid I quite liked it for being so odd with no legs and hands.
      The MG Guntank designers agree with your view. It didn't quite have a lower profile, but they widened the treads a lot and the shape is very similar to the Origin one. When will Bandai reprint the MG kit...

    Excellent review of a very nice “vintage” kit. I’m a fan of Guntank and purchased two kits. One I used it to create a diorama (here’s the link to the video: th-cam.com/video/2U7-RXJJ-JQ/w-d-xo.html), adopting a camouflaged color scheme. The other Kit I will build it as is for display. Seam lines are relatively easy to fix, even though the one on the head can be visible if the work is not accurate. Overall a fun kit to build that can be customized easily. Thanks for the excellent video!

      @@HobbyClubhouse, thank you for your nice comments on my diorama. I’m glad you like it. I agree that the top cockpit is kind of incongruous in a mecha because of its vulnerability, and that fact inspired me to show the direct hit that killed the gunner. As far as poses are concerned any tank mecha is limited p, but can be used to tell good stories. With a hindsight I should have given the Zaku I a more dynamic pose…. Domo arigato

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stupid Bandai should have included the missile pods like they did in the classic HGUC kit.
      For the "dam" thing, there's a story going around that Tomino liked the idea the Gundam could stop enemies like the force of a dam or something, but I've found it really sketchy since people don't say "dam" in Japanese. @@HobbyClubhouse agreed force of "dam" seems more like a forced narrative. first 2 are very war related with tank and cannon, leaving dam a bit out of place yet somehow worked out with age.

      originally it was named Gunboy, so we should be happy with Gundam without many questions. No, I'm joking: it's a legit question.
      Many old robots names were based on play of words. For example Daitarn comes from "Daitan" which means "brave", "fearless" etc.
      Gundam was prolly is a mix of play of words and references, like the "Gun" referring to the weapon and to Gundan which means "army": a robot so powerful to be like an army by itself.
