The best parts of Origin, from someone who saw UC0079 first: - Seeing how Ramba Ral and Crowley Hamon's team came together. This is the one team you see in the original series that are so loyal to not just homeland, but to each other. And it makes them intriguing. - Seeing more of Dozle Zabi. Dozle and Garma are the only two Zabis that seem to be genuinely likable people. Giving him that case of survivor's guilt was brilliant. - Paying attention to source material rather than retconning. A few things are retconned, but in very minor passable ways that service the story better. But I can't think of any character in Origin that does something blatantly out of character for their time in 0079.
Dozle also goes out in a way that is semi honorable as well. Hes protecting his men and his kids so giving him a survivors guilt storyline, explains his most memorable decisiom
Few things are retconned? Bro, the personality of a bunch of characthers is retconned, Amuro was a spoiled kid in the original that confronted everyone as if he was always right, in Origin he is a moron disconnected from his reality because he is looking at his dad computer, Kai in MSG is a coward that hides his fears in sarcasm and "I don't care", in Origin he is a deliquent that steals a construction machine to invade a military base (?), Garma in the ending of Origin has zero of the confidence he displays in MSG, in the academy I thought was good because was demonstrating how much he grow because Char's influence, but no apparently, he just is a coward. Also everyone, and I mean EVERYONE (except Char for obvious Gary Stu reasons), is a shouting lunatic in perfectly silent rooms in any situation, is irritating when the team of animators think that the only way to add tension to a conversation is making everyone shout constantly like buffoons. Also retconning the mobile suits development of the federation for that early just misses the point of the original that they are losing a war because they didn't see potential in MS, in Origin they are just idiots that made a crappy MS that a tiny principality with limited resources could surpass easily. I don't tink all the retcons are bad but is far from a good prequel to MSG, is a completely diferent take on the story, it doesn't add context, it changes the context.
"Killing his own sons" - That really doesn't seem to be something Degwin could ever do. Even when he knows how frightening Gihren and Kycilia is, he refuses to stop them. He loves his children. I always assumed Sasero was killed by Kycilia. She offs people the way we eat popcorn and he had just physically harmed her not long before, treating her like absolute garbage. We know she's a sibling killer to begin with from the actual show. Just seems like she had to be the one to do it.
I agree, when you watch the show/OVA, you get the impression that Degwin killed Sasro, but in the manga it gives the impression that Kycilia was the one who did
@@agitatedtofu2511 what? Degwin let his son become space Hitler and never once tried to stop him. Also kycilila doesn't even emote when her brother is killed and instead tells garma to stop crying
@@agitatedtofu2511 it's definitely Kycillia, she doesn't give a fuck if Gihren or Dozzle dies let alone her father's this is also the reason why Char rose to infamy aswell
@@yi_hou3092 Ironic thing is: SHE DOES care for the Zabi Family though she definitely is more than willing to kill a problem or two. She loved her father, she obviously cared for Garma and while she and Dozle had their disagreements, it wasn't near as bad as between her and Gihren (who she had been planning to kill a long while, hence her various 'Ace Units' that became essentially Test Pilots for all the good they were doing for the war effort), it's her one good trait that keeps her from being most evil Zabi (though considering the top of THAT list is Literal Space Hitler....)
To be fair, the guy in the cowboy hat was a spy sent by Kcyillia to watch them, so his quest to kill the Zabi family wasn't totally unwarranted since they knew where he lived and would have hunted him regardless of whether he stayed on the colony.
I mean... he really did. Petty revenge against people who weren't involved in his father's death (poor Garma...), idolizing his father (who also wanted to render earth uninhabitable, by the way, the man was a lunatic and deserved what he got), trying to drop Axis on earth, molesting children, etc., etc., etc. Moreover, he's the primary reason Zeon fell and by consequence, the reason spacenoids didn't get proper freedom from the Federation (you know, the ones who use hostages as human shields and conscript children) for 40+ years. He is the shittiest human being in all of gundam save maybe Gihren. Who wanted to do all the same things, plus a eugenics program. Even Degwin compared him to Hitler, I shouldn't have to. Origin tries to paint him as victim, but A: breaks canon to do so (aswell as in other areas... gassing friendly colonies for no reason, anyone?), B: does a very poor job of it anyway, and C: executes several unwarranted character assassinations in the process. Don't get me started on how they butchered Kycillia here.
Also, ALSO. It's left ambiguous whether or not Degwin actually assassinated Zeon Zum Deikun, at least in the origin version. At least, that's the impression I got. But it was definitely Kycillia who assassinated Sasro.
@@popburnsy3207 IIRC in the magna, it's inferred that Kycilla did it because Sasro slapped and insulted her. There's a few panels of Kycilla smirking after Sasro left the room.
What I also like with The Origin is how Zeon was shown to be nothing like what people tended to assume initially - a benevolent, philosophical visionary whom was unjustly assassinated and had his lofty vision co-opted by a fascist, extremist, family for their own gain. Instead, Zeon is shown to be not that far off from the Zabi family. If anything, the Zabi family's actions are all but the next logical step to Zeon's own extremism; going from simply spouting speech and ideas to military action in order to carry out those ideas.
@@HalfDemonInuyasha Yes, it's definitely an interesting take. I almost want to infer he actually DID have a heart attack rather than assassination. It'd make things all that much more tragic.
I'm with you Mahbu. Degwin gives the image and impression of an ugly bastard and evil schemer. BUT, only the impression though, because every single dialogue spoken by that character after his friend Zeon's death, is of a caring person to his family and subordinates. I even believe he was telling the truth to Admiral Revil, in that he wanted to end the war for real, without more bloodshed. The real Son of Bitch and most likely Zeon's murderer here, was Gihren. And Kycilia to a lesser degree.
I’d actually argue that watching the original Gundam movies then The Origin would be a better way to go. That way, you’re introduced to the world and the main conflict. The Origin has a lot of references and nods to the original series that is definitely lost to new comers. Side note, I think Gundam 00 is a great gateway into Gundam fandom in my opinion
I want to. I have watched probably all the Alternate time line gundams. But for UC. I only watched Unicorn. Do you have any recommendations on how to begin the UC line. Because UC time line os the only thing i have yet to understand.
Watch the original 0079, Zeta, and Char's Counterattack. You can skip ZZ and other side story stuff though it's recommended by many such as 8th MS team and War in the Pocket.
The good thing about getting into Gundam with Seed as a fifth grader is that I had no where to go but up as my tastes developed and my interest grew. Zeta and Turn A are my favorites, but I'm also fond of ZZ and X.
@@Erk1234567 It's essentially a remake of the original gundam that deviates towards the conclusion. I honestly had some fun seeing how they reinterpreted some classic archetypes and moments tho I can't call myself a fan
@@anenemystand5582 I've watched Seed like 4 times, both for nostalgia and for actually watching it critically. I think it has a lot going for it that no one wants to admit, but it DOES get dragged down by melodrama. Despite that, I still think it's a fun show
ZZ and first season of SEED are my favourites, for different reasons. I really HATED (and enjoyed) the way SEED forces it's characters into such awful situations, making childhood friends fight etc. I loved ZZ for it's use of the kids from "the wrong side of the tracks" as a departure from Amuro "my dad built this thing" Ray. And the dialogue this lead to, especially regarding the "guy" with the flower.
This show got me hooked into Gundam, and to think prior to this show, I really had no idea where to start, after watching this I started watching the original 1979 anime and I gotta say, Gundam is AMAZING! Its branding makes you think it's all about mechas battling it out, but to the core of the show is really about the politics of war and the relationship among its main characters during times of war. The plot is handled with great care and is very sophisticated that it is really are catered to a mature audience. Gundam is definitely not for kids, but it wouldn't hurt for kids to give the show a try. Now I know why Gundam is a legend that deserves its place among the Mt Rushmore of Anime.
Sociopath or no, The Origin makes it surprisingly easy to empathize with him. He was old enough to understand that his father was assassinated, and he's cultivated that rage well, despite how many people have tried to screw him over.
Origin is, while not completely canon to the main timeline, provides a lot of context and ideas that can be considered helpful (and canon) to the main timeline. Events such as the civil unrest in Zum City after Daikum's death, development of Mobile Suits, the area somewhere in South America called Jaburo, Revil getting captured by the Black 3 Stars and then escaping to make his speech, Ramba Ral's and Hamon Crowley's relationship, and most importantly Char's journey to become an Ace pilot that will eventually go to Side 7 to destroy the Gundam. Not to mention that Amuro's attitude by the start of the original series is briefly explained in Origin, him being mostly by himself while his father is always away at work and eventually discovering what his father is working with right before the attack on Side 7 happened. Take note that the Origin OVA fits within the Origin manga, a re-telling of the original series. It's different from the original series/movie trilogy, but the overall ideas are the same (improved even in most cases).
Degwin would never harm his own children. Sasro's assassination was entirely on Kycillia after Sasro hit her because she is a spiteful monster. Degwin is just sly enough to use it to his own ends, but he's a family first kind of person. Complicit bastard, but blood is blood to him, to the point where he wouldn't even raise a hand against Gihren even after calling his son a wannabe Hitler. Personal favourite Gundam series is a tie between War in the Pocket and the Thunderbolt: December Sky. Bandit Flower is decent but December Sky is tied with War in the Pocket as both of them come at the War Sucks theme from entirely different angles. War in the Pocket is about how good people and children are affected by war, choosing to do what is right even when it is hopeless. Thunderbolt is about how war is so all consuming that it can utterly destroy a person and leave them a broken shell.
I actually really liked the fights in the original Mobile Suit Gundam. The limited animation made the mechs actually feel like they're in space, being piloted by humans who only have a couple years experience.
Same for me. Stardust Memory was pretty good too, but I got my start with Gundam Wing and Gundam X. I watched Seed and Seed Destiny in highschool, but those two are pretty cookie-cutter.
As someone who got into Gundam recently, I'd recommend the movie trilogy of the original series, THEN Origin. It makes Origin so much better and less confusing. And the dramatic irony being set up is amazing. Overall, Origin on its own = good anime Origin after seeing the films = AMAZING anime
@@thevenom2731Same. The pacing of the movies is too fast and you lose tons of character moments. Ryu is barely a character in the movies. In the show he's integral
@thevenom2731 I would agree, there are a lot of things left out of the films that I view as integral, but I do think the films are a good way for people that are hesitant to commit to the length of OG MSG to see if they like it.
G Gundam also still had likeable characters and a decent overall plot with some nice twists. 08th MS Team is the true anti-SEED / SEED Destiny in terms of the whole, "We shouldn't be fighting!", schtick, which makes me appreciate it more.
The unicorn series is what brought me into the Gundam franchise and made me a huge fan. I loved the fights, but I made zero sense on who was who and what were what and who the good guys were. Then I watched the Origin when it aired on Toonami and it finally cleared everything up and properly educated me on the UC timeline. For anyone wishing to start getting into UC, especially any of the One year war shows. the Origin is a MUST.
Thank you so much for this video, Geoff. I was waiting for someone to discuss Gundam: The Origin at length. I am absolutely blown away by the show, not only for it's writing and characters, but the memorable action and gorgeous CGI. This video will help more people see it.
Gundam 00 is also a really good stand alone Gundam series and is also on crunchyroll and has two seasons followed by a movie, and will be getting a sequel series soon!
I love that you first watched IBO. That was my intro to Gundam because it aired on Toonami a while back. I then got my husband to watch it with me and then we watched the Origin and watched summaries of the original trilogy and are now watching as much of the sequel series based on the original that we can. We've become invested and it all started with IBO for us :)
Origin turned me into a Char Apologist. Also, the dub was on Hulu and Prime for a while. It may still be there. I watched Origin on Hulu with 8th Mobile Suit Team.
What really got me into the gundam series was actually Gunpla. I love building the model kits is so fun and I bled into the anime, specifically Iron-Blooded orphans
I went through the first three OVAs over the last two days, all dubbed in English, and definitely enjoyed the performances there in. But Chris Niosi’s Garma Zabi absolutely steals the entire dub for me; he is HBO Original Series-level effective in the role.
If Origin feels weird, just imagine its Char recounting how he remembers his life to Kamille while Amuro occasionally bullshit checks him. In this light it goes from being over the top and silly to a genuinely interesting exploration of how he seems himself, really really funny and kind of tragic too so I think this was the intended read of the work honestly?
I love this take! Tbh this is kinda how I see it too now.. But I think most of the time I catch myself agreeing with Char more subjectively despite his shortcomings/(poor writing in some cases) and underdeveloped areas of his character and back story in the end the way he goes about achieving his goals is wrong, and at the least inefficient compared to Amuro who I can objectively agree with even though he lacks a lot of ideals I believe make Char’s character work so well..
@@Head_Turnah i assume u mean the movies (which i must get around to watching), but what ive seen from the ovas and tv show especially, i really like it
okan Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, the anime that ATTACKED ON TITAN before it was popular. 😝😝😝😝😝 But seriously I’m not kidding. So many coincidences and parallels.
@Amfram Sunrise definetly has the largest library of mecha anime compared to any other studio, a side from Franxx i do feel Trigger's been pretty consistent and i hope for more in the future.
It should be noted, I feel, that origin is kinda a retcon/alternative telling of the events leading up to the one war. My understanding is it changes key elements.
@@Giving50prcnt I believe so. The federation having anything like mobile suits before the Gundam is definitely not part of the original canon. There was no Pre gundam "early" gun tank or "early" gun canon. And as far as I'm aware Sasro is an original character to Origin.
@@Mahbu Aye, the Feddies mostly had Type-61 tanks and aircraft like Saberfish before "Project V" in the original. That was why the Gundam, Guncannon and Guntank, and their data, were so vital. Although technically the Guntank was the first of the three prototypes, it wasn't deployed anywhere until White Base, let alone mass-produced and distributed across several colonies. Even the ground combat Gundams from 08th MS Team were made with spare parts from Project V, well into the war. Lends credence to the alternate universe theory.
@@Blodhelm I could understand the Gun Tank Early Model but the Gun Cannon Early model seemed bizarre, though not as bizarre as them being completely incapable of keeping up with the Zaku I.
@CommandoDude I don't even remember it stating that "guys from space colonies want independence so they attack us to fight for it" and that would be the very basic outline of One Year War to get WHY are they fighting in the first place. As is we only have "Yeah, we're feddies and we fight zeeks."
I just got into Gundam and the models recently but I’d like to say your Channel is fantastic and this video was my introduction to it and I love it already.
I just decided to try Gundam again thanks to this video. Just finished Iron Blooded Orphans and from this and comments going to explore the standalone stories. Easier then getting overwhelmed with content
Just think of the original 80s anime as six seasons and a movie. It makes it more digestible. It around the same length as OG Naruto part 1 without the filler. That still might be too long, but I hope it helps.
The first Gundam Origin OVA is LEGITIMATELY one of my favourite pieces of anime ever conceived. As a Gundam fan it does justice to every single character from the original series and what made it great. Its political aspects and elaborate betrayals. And Dozle is STILL the best Zabi and so pure. The weirdest part though, is no one acknowledges Char's existence for the first 25 minutes. Anyway, best Gundam because it has all the best aspects of Gundam and the only series without a Romeo and Juliet complex.
@CommandoDude I'd say S1 was mediocre and S2 was better but not amazing looking at it from a story and character point of view. It's fun to watch but the plot and characters fall pretty flat. Also the info dumping in S1 that occurred pretty much every other episode and character motivations that seemed good until the next episode when they went back on things was kind of annoying, but Mari Okada did pen the show and sadly her works tend to have this issue specifically of being a little inconsistent and just an info dump show because apparently no one's smart enough to pay attention.
@@jholt8518 "The ending was a meme" At this point in our lives, everything can be meme-fied in this golden age of social media. There's even memes for masterpieces like Citizen Kane. Thus, memes do not speak for quality. It can't really be used as an argument.
McGillis used every one to ever call him friend or simply trusted him to take his revenge, among other things. He did worse but that's spoilers, and to be fair, his early days were really f-ed up. As for Char - Casval was a weird angry kid who only loved his mom and his sister. If the Zabi's hadn't beat him to it, he'd eventually have killed his father for being an inattentive and possibly abusive jerk. His casual disregard for human life that wasn't in his tiny circle of importance is legendary. That said, for a long view plan towards vengeance, he's possibly the best ever.
Which would mean adapting The Origin manga in its entirety, since the Char backstory part is a relatively small chunk of the manga. Only about one volume or so.
Yeah. Do a movie trilogy just like the original wil the origins retelling of the story. 2 hours long each movie and it can be done easily, especially considering that the origin's pacing is much closer to the movie trilogy than to that of the full series.
I still think the original Gundam is one of the best pieces of pop culture media Japan has ever produced, and is a major, if not the major reason, Japanese pop culture is a major player in the world today. It was one of the first original anime to gain a large adult following. Countless creators were inspired to become creators by it. Countless people became engineers due to Gundam. Even to this day the story holds up wonderfully. There are so many themes touched upon and explored in sensible and realistic manner. Its characters to this day are iconic and Char is an absolute legend of a character. Even in a head-to-head comparision between Star Wars and Gundam Star Wars comes off as hopelessly simplistic and juvenile. Gundam shows scenes like competency not immediately translating into leadership ability with Mirai struggling to take over for Bright. Gundam shows what it feels like to become estranged from your parents due to growing up in completely different circumstances. It has interesting and unexpected character development like Amuro estranging himself from Fraw Bow due to his rising esteem and responsibilites. It has a tragic and interesting Romance in Lalah and Char. Kai and Miharu's story were excellently directed. Yeah, everybody knows that the original Gundam was not the first serious anime or the first one with mature themes, but it executed so many different ones so wonderfully, with good art, good direction, iconic voice acting, iconic art. To this day I still think Gundam is hopelessly underrated in the West and it's insane to see that for a long time even some of the mediocre OVAs like Stardust Memory were more popular here
Wing & G Gundam are my favourite ones so far since 1: I grew up with them and 2:they brought a unique approach to the franchise that I haven't seen in years, not just to Gundam but to other stuff as well.
G gundam will always be special to me. It was my first series and to me, as a kid, it was like DragonBall z with gundams so it was awesome. I've since watched IBO, unicorn, 00, 08th ms team and have really enjoyed these different gundam series.
My brother and I binged the entire UC last summer, and loved every minute of it. He wasn't really a Gundam fan going in, and I've been a Gundam fan since childhood, so we had two very different views going into the adventure. Needless to say, he loved it and even took up model kit building with me.
My favorite to this date is still 00 Gundam and it's what I recommend to anyone wanting to get into the series. It's a great standalone series with many of the same plot structures and messages as the UC series.
I tried to get into the original Gundam series at one point like 5/6 years ago, but this video has convinced me to give it another shot. Char strikes me as a fascinating villain, now having seen this and I'm eager to check it all out.
One thing to note is that origin is considered ALT UC, the manga (and by extension the OVA) is a re imagining of the original gundam show, events take place in different orders (for instance Jaburo is attacked before operation Odessa, where in the original show it was the other way round), There are new characters and some old characters are removed and some meet different fates (for instance Mquve in the gyan with the Gouf Troop at Oddessa rather than fighting in the texas colony), the development of Zeon's MS is also different in the origin timeline compared to Cannon UC ,in the original timeline Zeon was already the principality as well as already having mobile suits in mass production several years prior to the one year war starting with the Zaku I A early type which they used to support the insurrection on side 6 (which is why side 6 is autonomous and independent to the federation in the original show but once zeon starts losing the war they allow federation troops to be stationed on their colonies - war in the pocket) with the Zaku II A entering service in 0078 with the C type being the principalities main MS at the start of hostilities (the A through C were equipped with lead shielding as all bazooka armed zaku's carried tactical nuclear warheads for use against colonies and warships). To sum it up the origin is not cannon as it contradicts the original show/timeline (how it usually goes is a UC manga is typically considered cannon if it does not contradict anything from one of the Anime's so typically Anime (gundam 0079, zeta, double zeta etc) > OVA (war in the pocket, Stardust memories etc.) > Movies (char's counter attack) > Manga (Gundam the origin, Gundam Legacy, Moon gundam, Char's deleted affair etc and the various Mobile suit variation manga) > Games
While I really really enjoyed Origin by watching it immediately after 0079, my opinion is the more people who can check it out in any form, the better! Thank you for this video. now I need that every-char-is-here shirt and the plush zaku head. immediately. where to cop
I read the Origin in the hardback manga, and it blew me away, I can only imagine what seeing it animated will be like. I prefer the original Mobile Suit Gundam, warts and all, though I think Zeta is more focused as a series. Outside the UC' I'm a OO guy, it's damn near perfect.
Honestly the animation of MSG 1979 was a little jarring at first, but by episode 8 or so I was completely hooked. I tried watching Origin first but after the 1st episode I could tell there was a lot that I was missing
If you don't want to watch the original anime and you don't mind reading, I recommend reading the original Gundam the Origin manga, it integrates both the original story and the prequel story for Char and Sayla seamlessly.
I first got into Gundam after I received a Full Armor Gundam Ver. Ka model kit from my grandmother for Christmas. I just had to know where this badass suit came from and ever since then I got hooked!
Great video, I like you doing this style. Gundam Origin was a great experience to watch. I started watching with Wing and never watched the original series untill after I watched this.
I don't know where this meme that "the Gundam timeline is difficult" came from, but it's not true at all. It's real simple. Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, ZZ Gundam, Char's Counterattack. Easy. That's a tough call which one is the best. I can give my favorites: 0080, 0083, G Gundam, ZZ Gundam.
Good to see such a glowing recommendation of The Origin, and while I would have liked to watch it blind, it's good to know it actually takes the focus off of the mecha and more on the characters, which is very smart IMO. I've been a Gundam fan for a few years, but my path was a bit of a long one... -First, I bought and put together a crappy Wing Gundam gunpla during the time when they were just hitting the US. -Then, I watched a bunch of SD Gundam. -Then sometime later, my friends streamed G Gundam, Gundam 00 (favorite series btw), and Gundam Wing. -Next, I found out that SD Gundam Overworld got an english patch, so I downloaded and played through that. Same with Genesis (my first imported game). -Around the time Build Divers was making the rounds, I saw some Gunpla vids and got back into building those. And to my surprise, one of my friends got curious about IBO and we watched it together, as well as the other Gundam Build series. -And the first half of this year was spent watching the main UC saga: '79, Stardust Memories, 08th MS Team, Zeta, ZZ, and finally Char's Counterattack (which I was surprisingly disappointed by). Looking forward to SD Gundam Cross Rays and the Hathaway's Flash movies!
Origins is very good for the UC timeline as the UC timeline shows are decentralized and generally use the One Year War as a backdrop. Origins help set the stage which lets you explore the other series if you don't wanna watch the OG series. OVAs and miniseries like 8th MS team and War in the Pocket all become better once you learn the reason for the war. It also feeds into the message of war being bad, as the numerous character dramas and sacrifices are ultimately all caused by the tragedy of the death of Zeon, which Origins actually leaves ambiguous as to whether or not Degwin murdered him, if the official story that Earth Fed actually murdered him, or if he just suffered a badly timed heart attack and the Zabis only used it to further their own ends.
Gundam Wing was my intro to the franchise, G-Gundam was a fun guilty pleasure, 08th MS-Team is a favorite my dad and I share, and Endless Waltz has the Gundam models we love most from the entire franchise. I’ll give this series a go for the sake of seeing something good.
I really liked 08th MS Team back in the day. I appreciated how it dealt more with the "grunts" of warfare aspect as opposed to the top leaders of each side.
I agree with Yazzie! McGillis did NOTHING WRONG! NOR DID GAELIO!! RUSTAL DID EVERYTHING WRONG! Edit: not even ten seconds after posting and my comment already has a like lol
Japan is weird, so I just chock that up to another case of Japan being weird af. It also was am arranged marriage but he did actually love her. But other than that questionable shit. McGillis did nothing wrong.
Years ago, I watched a big chunk of the original Gundam series when the dub was available streaming on Anime News Network. Our host is correct that the animation and action don't hold up, but I was surprised at how much I liked the story. The pacing and cadence of the plot reminded me of a big-budget American TV show far more than most anime.
Yep, most anime original series feel more like American television, because they aren’t adapting a manga or light novel. People don’t realize that what storytelling they like is comic storytelling with 20 pages each week or month.
A Mecha series that can be found in English, I know because I watched it that way online a few years ago, that I think needs to at least get some attention is Jinki Extend. I will admit, as far as the Mecha genre goes, a lot of what the series does has been done by other Mech series, most notably several series entries in the Gundam Franchise, but the series does something that most series seem to forget when the finale comes, an actual sense of closure. Speaking from my experience, Jinki Extend has its final moments of the series finale feel like everything has come to a comfortable end point while also leaving a subtle setup for a follow-up on the off chance someone wants to do just that.
So just as a heads up for people who want to start with the Origin, it is techically a seperate timeline to the Og series and therefore the UC, but the differences are minor and are only noticable because of Amuros (the mc of the original series) reaction to the Gundam in comparisson to the scenes showing him in the Origin!
Ok. To anyone who hears shit about ZZ and want to skip it, let me try to talk you out of it. The biggest flaws on ZZ are having to follow Zeta and a way too light hearted start. I'd recommend watching Stardust Memories after Zeta, then watch ZZ.
Tomino was going through severe depression at the end of Zeta, hence the bleak ending. ZZ the producers told him to dial it back a bit. The second half of ZZ is actually some of the best Gundam ever, just so hard to get into.
This is such a great series! The stortelling is great .. Getting to know the main characters of the original 1979 series was spot on in my opinion. I watched it 3 times and found this series almost fresh and new each time. This is such a well put together prequel. I just love it!
Gundam is fundamentally the reason why I decided to study to become an engineer.
So did you build your own robot already?
I respect it
How disappointed are you that mecha will never be reality?
I trust in you dude! Deliver the Zaku!
Gunpla dont count 😂

- Paying attention to source material rather than retconning. A few things are retconned, but in very minor passable ways that service the story better. But I can't think of any character in Origin that does something blatantly out of character for their time in 0079.

Also kycilila doesn't even emote when her brother is killed and instead tells garma to stop crying
you are correct because Kycillia is the one who killed Sasero. Her brother Gihren knew that all along, and told her once.

@@martialarts4095 Ah, I see you're a sociopath as well
Rau Lecruse did nothing wrong!
He did nothing wrong till he tried to drop Axis
I mean... he really did.
I'm under the impression that Degwin ordered it to happen. So, close enough
@@HalfDemonInuyasha
Yes, it's definitely an interesting take.

Last I checked, Char was the most popular character in all of Gundam.
You can appreciate a charachter without rooting for him
Interestingly, a multi country survey showed orga itsuka is the most popular character
Sociopath or no, The Origin makes it surprisingly easy to empathize with him. He was old enough to understand that his father was assassinated, and he's cultivated that rage well, despite how many people have tried to screw him over.
He's pretty much the sephiroth of gundam... or would sephiroth be the char's of final fantasy?
@@BigaloMax depends on which came first under that logic

I would say that there is good fights in the original series, but most of the fights were kinda lame.

Those are my first gunplas too. Cheap and overall good products

Same with Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolt.
@@Giving50prcnt I believe so.

Honestly we need that, not an entire rewrite(but do extend the end to the original 50 episodes not the shitty 43) just an update to audio and visuals.
Yeah. Do a movie trilogy just like the original wil the origins retelling of the story. 2 hours long each movie and it can be done easily, especially considering that the origin's pacing is much closer to the movie trilogy than to that of the full series.

Gundam is one of the best pieces of pop culture media Japan has ever produced,
and is a major, if not the major reason, Japanese pop culture is a major player
in the world today. It was one of the first original anime to gain a large
adult following. Countless creators were inspired to become creators by it.
Countless people became engineers due to Gundam.
Even to this day the story holds up wonderfully.
There are so many themes touched upon and explored in sensible and realistic
manner. Its characters to this day are iconic and Char is an absolute legend of
a character. Even in a head-to-head comparision between Star Wars and Gundam
Star Wars comes off as hopelessly simplistic and juvenile.
Gundam shows scenes like competency not
immediately translating into leadership ability with Mirai struggling to take
over for Bright. Gundam shows what it feels like to become estranged from your
parents due to growing up in completely different circumstances. It has
interesting and unexpected character development like Amuro estranging himself
from Fraw Bow due to his rising esteem and responsibilites. It has a tragic and
interesting Romance in Lalah and Char. Kai and Miharu's story were excellently
directed.
Yeah, everybody knows that the original Gundam was
not the first serious anime or the first one with mature themes, but it
executed so many different ones so wonderfully, with good art, good direction,
iconic voice acting, iconic art.
To this day I still think Gundam is hopelessly
underrated in the West and it's insane to see that for a long time even some of
the mediocre OVAs like Stardust Memory were more popular here

I'm a big fan of 0083 stardust memory and the 08th MS team. Unicorn is also amazing and beautiful.

Char also had the same motivation in Counterattack...
To sum it up the origin is not cannon as it contradicts the original show/timeline (how it usually goes is a UC manga is typically considered cannon if it does not contradict anything from one of the Anime's so typically Anime (gundam 0079, zeta, double zeta etc) > OVA (war in the pocket, Stardust memories etc.) > Movies (char's counter attack) > Manga (Gundam the origin, Gundam Legacy, Moon gundam, Char's deleted affair etc and the various Mobile suit variation manga) > Games

only seen origin and the 3 movies so far, Char is easily my fav character
Yep, that’s most people. Char is the most popular character in Gundam, especially in Japan.
Iron blooded orphans got me hooked on gundam. I even built a barbatos gunpla
Mobile Suit Gundam I, II, and III are perfectly reasonable jumping off points for the UC timeline.
I feel like this is one of the most underrated anime of all time.
Yamcha Kippur throw in stardust memory before zeta just to get the story you got it complete lol
0080 huh.
One word.
Hamburger
@@francesfuego6950 It's better to watch Zeta before 0083. That way, when you see Bask Om in 0083, you know he's going to be a dick.
*Liking ZZ*
Ah I see you're also a man of culture.
you forgot the real reason why this meme was created: f91 and V gundam
I prefer some things being vague, better to speculate sometimes
Gundam Wing was my intro to the franchise, G-Gundam was a fun guilty pleasure, 08th MS-Team is a favorite my dad and I share, and Endless Waltz has the Gundam models we love most from the entire franchise. I’ll give this series a go for the sake of seeing something good.
Wing is my trash but from the UC, I gotta give shout outs to the 08th MS team.
Mad respect to your girl btw. My husband would approve
As someone who hasn't seen any of Gundam, this was rather informative.
08th MS Team and Gundam 0083 are probable the best places to follow up Origins. Sieg Zeon!
Great video, thank you for hitting home how important the Anti-war message of Gundam is!
Iok worst boi, Akihiro best boi. But honestly I love his gf already lmfao
@@OscarGilFerrer the BIGGEST OF FACTS FROM BOTH OF YOU!!
McGillis never did nothing wrong? What about marrying his child bride?
Japan is weird, so I just chock that up to another case of Japan being weird af. It also was am arranged marriage but he did actually love her. But other than that questionable shit. McGillis did nothing wrong.
@@CrouTheBlackwing Yeah, Japan have a weird fascination with Lolis, but mainstream anime is rated tame compared to Hentai in that aspect.
My first Gundam was 00, and it got me into the franchise. Dropped it on season 2 though and moved on to Wing.
you post this right as Toonami is going to debut it tonight
Sorry, that's next weekend and unfortunately it's airing at 3:00 am est.
You: Gundam Wing
Me, an intellectual: Mobile Suit Gundam
Mobile suit Gundam: war in the pocket is my favorite.
08th Ms team is the close second.
The characters in those two shorter series are just amazing.
So just as a heads up for people who want to start with the Origin, it is techically a seperate timeline to the Og series and therefore the UC, but the differences are minor and are only noticable because of Amuros (the mc of the original series) reaction to the Gundam in comparisson to the scenes showing him in the Origin!
Also, the federation had produced mobile suits before the one year war..
I would say it’s also one of its biggest strengths. The goodwill of Zeta made me push through the first few episodes.
Oo, that makes me hyped for ZZ because the bleakness of Zeta can be a real turn off for me sometimes
This is such a great series! The stortelling is great .. Getting to know the main characters of the original 1979 series was spot on in my opinion. I watched it 3 times and found this series almost fresh and new each time. This is such a well put together prequel. I just love it!
Here's hope for a remake of the original series based on the origin manga.
Possible spoiler
I heard Amuro dies so it kinda destroys everything after.
