  • The Hi-Nu Gundam makes it to Bandai's pantheon of Real Grade kits hot on the heels to compliment the HGUC Nightingale, this design sticks closer to the Beltorchika's Children novel design with select elements of the later Yutaka Izubuchi design mixed in, with a new look like no other Hi-Nu before it! This kit is not just the best version of Amuro's final MS, but it's also one of the best Real Grade kits Bandai has made to date!

    I just found your channel! You’re really good at these videos. Sometimes I feel MechGaikotsu is too brash or undetailed in his reviews, or ZakuAurealis who I feel is too slow and a lot of the info he gives goes over my head if I’m not in a good mood or not paying attention. You reviews have been really entertaining and offer a good middle ground with the 3-point verdict. Keep up with this man!

    I actually really enjoy the longer legs of the RG line.
    I always interpreted RG's 1/144 scale as being based off the real grade vision: designed as if they were real.
    In other words: if these suits were real, their inherent designs and heights would be unique to their real life inspired versions rather than their fiction/anime/manga based counterparts.
    So for me... still 1/144 scale, it's just their 1/1 that their 1/144size is based off is something different.
    P.s. think of it like this.
    We all know how tall a PG 1/60 gundam kit is. Now put the 1/48 Mailes Kenbu infront of it. 1/48 is a larger scale, but the kenbu pales in comparison to a PG 1/60 gundam due to it's original 1/1 size being WAY smaller than a 1/1 gundam.
    For me, RG is like that. They are their own thing with 1/1 sizes that are unique to them. So of course their 1/144 doesn't match that of a standard HG.

    • @bluex610
      @bluex610 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I always considered this also. You gotta imagine these mechs and how big and heavy they are. So them having longer legs for better support makes sense. If you got a bigger base the better support the structure will have.
      To me personally the legs look a lot better imo. Not sure about all other rg kits though

  • @radiantcomma4945
    @radiantcomma4945 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    Bandai engineers really TOOK THE LIBERTY of revamping the aesthetic & mechanical aspect of the original MS design in Real Grade kits. "Improving" the size of the MS is just another decision to take in order to achieve good overall proportion and to accommodate those amazing gimmicks for the RG Hi-V Gundam, and it is in 1/144 scale.

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      From my observation, it really does seem like the proportions with the longer legs is often a priority and the rest of the kit is built around that. They add so much details and features that it's kinda hard to be too upset with the results. Though I certainly wouldn't mind if they just take out the 1/144 on the box, it'd make everyone's lives easier

    I think RG enlargement is more of a symptom of trying to fit the parts count into the box scale. RG Hi-Nu is much closer in size to MG F91 than HGUC Hi-Nu, and miniaturizing would probably compromise either mold detail or parts strength. At a certain point, an RG has to be more than an HG, even if newer HGs can have simple frames that work well.

    • @citrusjuicebox
      @citrusjuicebox 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@arcticarduino That's fine, but these are still fictional robots at the end of the day. Bandai can easily say the Hi-Nu is now 20m tall, and suddenly the RG would be in-scale.

Blowing Mecha Gaikotsu and ZakuAurelius out of the water completely. The size couldn’t bother me any less, it’s entirely fine and I’m very happy that it scales up to look the same height as the Nu.
    What I don’t like are the gold and silver plastics which look disgusting and contrast with the pastels of the kit in an ugly way.
    As a snap fit builder this bothers me a lot (I paint miniatures and build gunpla as a treat to get away from my brushes and airbrush).
    Minor gripes are the toned down gun on the right arm and the silver chest vents, which should’ve been yellow or at least gold, to break up the front a little.
    A desaturated yellow would’ve been nice instead of all the gold, I think, and a simple grey instead of the silver would’ve been great.
    The C clips are disappointing, they have too high a failure rate to still be used, through no fault of the user.
    The rest looks phenomenal and despite the color choices, I’d be happy to have this displayed.

    You are killing it with your reviews my man definitely top 3 depending upon whom you ask. But as far as the way you make it work is very special. Also you mentioned something about pilot figures for RG kits and for me I have always been one of those kids that never played with vehicles without a visible driver or when Zoids I believe was what were first available in the early 80’s they also had a little silver or gold pilot for the cockpit and I was always more interested in those type of toys. So I think Bandai set the precedents for pilot figures with the 1/100 kits and so on , I know it’s a minuscule piece of plastic that isn’t congruent to the functionality or appearance of the kit but it’s a great bonus and always holds a special place in my childhoods heart to this very day.

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much! Certainly hope to give people a great choice besides the big boys everyone know
      Zoids really did have visible canopies where you can see the pilots, and I think it's pretty key to convey that they're piloted machines rather than just robot dinosaurs (as if that alone wasn't already really cool)
      Bandai started taking cockpits really seriously at the dawn of the MG line and those kits were the first to seriously show humans in context with the MS
      They always made me feel inadequate though since I can't paint them well at all...

    Thanks for the review, as someone else said : very thorough. I really like that you take your time to justify your opinions on the kit. It makes for a better conversation overall.
    Also, you go thoroughly in describing the articulations and how everything fits. Like thanks to you, i'll be extra careful when building the connectors of the fuel tanks. They have that "C" shaped peg that I hate. It's sooo fragile.
    The toes of the MG Barbatos have the same type of peg, and one of mine got lose after a few hours.
    I don't agree though about the scaling issue.
    Yes, I like coherence, I always measure the kit's size and compare it to the MS height in the anime/manga.
    But, on the other hand, a taller Hi Nu is a delight. It fits the MS very well actually (imo).
    And one quick note : regardless of the RG Hi Nu oversizing, this kit doesn't match with the HG Nightingale, details wise.
    The HG while being nice and solid is bland compared to the level of details of the RG.
    Maybe we'll have a RG Nightingale :D .
    Anyways, thanks again !

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much!
      I think the size and scale issue is everyone's favorite topic, judging from the comments:) I didn't think there'd be this much interest actually. Big or not, I'm really of the opinion that they should just not mention 1/144 altogether and I think everything falls in place nicely
      I actually didn't consider that gap in level of detail actually but it's quite true especially when the Nightingale is that huge but with really clean, uninterrupted surfaces. If they made an RG Nightingale, I can't imagine how heavy it would be. I didn't mention it in the review but the Hi-Nu is pretty heavy because it's really dense.

  • @changzooka
    @changzooka 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Tbh, before I built it, I too was kinda taken aback by the size of the rg.
    Having built most of it, I think being off scale is a good thing. It looks more aggressive, the engineering is insane, which probably may not even have been possible had it been smaller, and most importantly, the hguc (which I love!) is a dwarf compared to the nightingale. This RG has a better silhouette to match with the gargantuan nightingale, I guess.
    Love your reviews, how I never discovered your channel before I'll never know, but amazing content, man!
    Edit: I actually own the original metal robot damashii, but the rg is indeed cheaper and much better!

      The Robot Damashii HiNu really had all the bases covered and even had the big cannon before anyone else did, but yeah, the price leaves it well out of reach for a lot of fans. It's kinda nice the RG looks so different from it so they don't just cancel out one of the other

    The liberties given to the rg line and its purpose is to take into account what the machine would be in real life. In many instances the proportions would be a bit larger to accommodate the mechanicle parts that would need to be housed under the armor.

    As always, great review! I'm not one to lose sleep over the liberties taken in regard to scale conformity- if Bandai has to use some fuzzy math in order to realize their design and engineering objectives for a given kit, I can forgive a little discrepancy in the scale department. That said, I do prefer the Hi-Nu being a little shorter than his standard brother. I appreciate that there seemed to be a deliberate design philosophy differentiating their proportions. If I were to offer an american football analogy, the Nu is a tall, lean tight end, and the Hi-Nu is a (relatively) short, stout running back. I'm happy to see that the RG Hi-nu retains that beefy/bulky look for the most part.

      Personally I wouldn't not-buy a kit for being bigger -- and technically, it really is lanky limbs on a 1/144 torso. Though I get why people who are annoyed with the 1/144-anarchy to not be very satisfied with that answer. The Robot Damashii people have the right idea from the start and don't list a scale so that has never been an issue
      Hobby got a nice neck massage:) He keeps getting into my shots now so you might see him more

    congratulations, first on getting the head crest back from the blackhole, and for the review, which is one of your longest one? i absolutely loved the snippets you inserted in between, like the Katoki interview and the bottom heavy era of mechs of yesteryears (can't unsee it now), and kudos on giving a balanced review without getting too hyped on it.
    question tho for the c-clips that holds the fuel tanks (and the Bazooka to a lesser degree), is it the same as the ones we get from 30MM kits? i don't have a good track record with those lol (looks at my floppy Alto abominations)
    overall having mixed feelings for the guy, tho with the added bulk and everything, i could recreate the Pillar Men scene just with this and the RG Nu and Unicorn haha.

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really is my longest review to date and maybe only another big RG kit will ever match it. There really is a ton of hype and people are already getting a bit swept up - like people trying to deny the standing problem is a thing by saying it's just people who can't pose a kit properly
      The clips on the fuel tank is the same sort of connection. They seem to be stretched a bit just staying on the bar, so when they stay on it for a while and warp, then the friction really quickly goes...
      You'd need a third one with Barbie legs to complete the crew, so invite the Nu along too. Nice thing is they all come ready to do Jojo poses

    • @teknonaught
      @teknonaught 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HobbyClubhouse concerning the hype, it's understandable, since it's a follow-up of sort for the very good Nu, but that doesn't excuse problems with the kit (both with the Nu and the Hi-Nu), too bad people is already blaming on 'user errors' for its inability to stand. (a problem that i feel will be exacerbated more when more reviews start popping up)
      thanks for the clips explanation, i for one would gladly sacrifice some articulation on the tanks for a sturdier 'support', but Bandai think otherwise it seems.

    Really love how this RG kit essentially combines all of the major Hi-Nu incarnations over the years, with the Izubuchi blue, white, and copper color scheme with the original line-art/Ver.Ka bulky proportions. All of the opening armor gimmicks are references to the Ver.Ka's hatches as well, as they are mostly the same on both kits. As much as I love the MG Ver.Ka, this RG kit is really filled with love and appreciation from the designer team, making it probably the definitive version of Hi-Nu Gundam that is able to satisfy fans of all versions of the MS

    • @HobbyClubhouse

  • @classicalthrasher

    Most definitely prefer the "slimmer" and "less bulky"-relative to the RG!-HG kit. Was fun to build and paint little details on (only painting big, white sections on the Bazooka and Rifle was a pain). The designs are so different that a fan of the Hi-Nu Gundam with space and money could have both, and there wouldn't be anything wrong with that. They are not identical, and none necessarily worse.
    Personally, I love the head on the 2009 kit much better-it also resembles the version featured on the SRW games, which was how I knew about the Hi-Nu in the first place (probably the game's and HG's design was based on that Izubuchi design.)
    The RG is a re-design of that re-design that looks impressive, but because of the scale "issue", I am more than happy with my dual-wielding, dual-beam saber HG kit (bought two kits to complete the sabers.) It's old *and* beautiful, with wonderful proportions.

    As for the RG Hi-Nu Gundam. I'm just kinda meh about it, it's the standard of sexy machine just with a bit of bulk. Frankly the turn off for me is definitely the height. I really prefer my Hi-Nu to be short yet wide and bulky, it feels different compared to other main Gundams which is why I'm just kinda a little sad they increased the height and in my eyes slimed it down a bit. Still a really good kit and I hope everyone who gets it have a great time building it and posing it.

    I'm going to be honest I like the bigger, chunky look over the the smaller, chunky look. It looks more natural to me when next to the nightingale then the HG version. I understand people's complaints about it being to big but it just feels unnatural and overall just weird seeing a shrink in the Gundam design when at this point the suits where getting bigger to the point of the Nu-Gundam. Plus it does still feel like a David vs Goliath situation when squaring up against the Nightingale since it is much chunkier then it overall.

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thickness of the HiNu is indeed a positive element combined with the extra height. Looking at this kit from a 45-degree angle shows off that thickness best with the meaty wings that work together with the chunkier legs.
      Another commenter mentioned something that didn't come to my mind which is the Nightingale was possibly made with this kit in mind and it's actually rather tall itself so maybe you're not seeing nothing when they go well together

      It's like the designers went: "Make the back smaller so it can STAND? Look how cool it is! We can't do that!"

      They really can do a lot of the PG stuff in RG kits now so you're not too far off:)

    9:15 on the subject of height, there is an official source book that lists the official height of the Hi-Nu as ">> 20m"; because of this, I'd actually argue that the RG Hi-Nu is probably SMALLER than its canon height, as the model comes in at scaling to about 22m, which doesn't seem like "much greater than" 20m to me.

    This isn't just the best variant of the Hi-nu, this is the best version of any Nu Gundam, be it the movie ver, Side F ver or the Novel ver (maybe saving for the metal structure since I don't own that and haven't heard much about it).

    Im getting nervous about that gap in front of the head. Wont it really properly close?

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah, I forgot to talk about that. Sadly it really doesn't close at all. What you see is how it always is... BUT, the crest does cover it completely and quite perfectly

    I love the looks of the RG. I personally think all the changes are better, and I don't care about the scale complaints. It's still a bit shorter compared to the RG Nu, and that's all that matters imo. As a fan of the original Hi Nu lineart, I never really liked the Izubuchi redesign for the original MG. I think the RG strikes a balance between the original and the redesign.

      Judging from the comments, a whole lot of people agree with you, especially on the styling choices. I had fun discovering what bits they mixed from different designs as I built the kit
      also... does the Amuro in your icon have an afro...?

    proportion is definitely off the 1/144, but the thickness is a result of RG Hi Nu being a mix of the most well known 2 Hi Nu illustrations. One being blue and thin like old MG, the other being purple and more chunky like MG ver ka. RG is the result/mix of the two in respect of both illustration's popularity and history.

    Ah yes, dropping tiny parts...
    1. My Core Gundam fell over and the V fin shot off. Found it half a year later when I moved furniture around, had whittled down a new one from a sprue square.
    2. Dropped a part and crawled around on the floor for twenty minutes before I gave up. I turned around to brace on the chair and there it was, resting on top of the flat connecting part of the arm rest.
    3. Dropped one of the vernier covers of the RG Force Impulse. Couldn’t find it and gave up after hours of searching - It really soured me on the kit due to how tight the fit is for those.
    Months later when I dropped yet another part, I kicked my power strip and it rattled in a weird way. I shook it and sure enough it kept rattling around.
    I unscrewed the cover and opened it up, then the tiny little piece dropped in my hand, from the RG.
    It’d fallen into a tiny rectangular hole and it only fits at a very specific angle, basically the smallest profile of the part. That was a one in a million drop and an extremely lucky find.
    I’ve built over sixty kits, I don’t drop parts that often, but when I do it’s a pain in the neck.

    I wish the Hi Nu is not white but grey like the G-3. Would be so much nicer with the bright blue.
