  • Bandai's Entry Grade RX-78-2 Gundam returns a year later with extra accessories in the Full Weapons Set. Now bundled with the bazooka, Gundam Hammer, and also the Beam Javelin, the set has quite a few surprises - though not all of them pleasant ones.

    Love the quick discussion on plastic molding, too few people actually know how that works and also love the references like GM 3/Juaggu from Unicorn.
    I do agree that its great we finally get a retail mold of the gundam hammer and beam javelin, but sadly both are not great molds. I was planning to get the full weapon set but after returning to playing with the EG Gundam I made months later, the kit just degraded badly. I also remembered that the build of the EG was snappy but the plastic-on-plastic contact on all the joints would definitely ruin the kit.
    Sadly, there is a cost to making a kit as cheap as possible, one that the EG series has to pay for in its articulation, stability, and accessories. We just gotta remember that EGs are not meant for regular builders or collectors but literally for people new to the hobby.

      Once you know about the molding limitations, you'll really see tons of things as you build kits, especially on MG kits and how they split up parts to get all the shapes they want, it's amazing.
      I wonder if Bandai saw the aging problem with the EG Gundam and thought "hey, maybe that'll get those new fans to move up to HG kits" and rolled with it. Then again, they're often perfectly happy with leaving problems as-is like the ABS parts on the HG Z'Gok that break... no one knows which flavor of evil it is with Bandai

    YES dude, great that you put something in about injection molding. I think that taking the manufacturing process in mind makes building models so much more fun because understanding the confines something has to operate in gives you more to appreciate :D that goes for pretty much everything though imo!
    Wasnt interested in this set previously but the molding on the new weapons does looks better than I thought and I didnt know the gundam had a slightly different hue compared to the "naked" one ..... now im not completely sure haha.
    Thanks for the great video as usual :)

      When I first learned about the limits of molding when I was smaller, I was always blown away when I started seeing the tricks designers used to get the shape and details they need. MG inner frames are feats of true skill in design
      The weapons themselves are pretty useful if you want them for another build. If you want an RX-78 for any sort of build, it also wouldn't hurt to get this and have the weapons as a little bonus

    Its an EG kit... This is to get someone to like the hobby, its up to that person if this is enough to like or hate it, they'll learn on how to make it more pleasing in the eyes like painting the gray weapons. You don't want someone starting with an RG, MG or PG right away.

    2:54 yay! one more step for an EG GM! (i'm starting to sound like a broken record lol).
    13:58 it's not the first time for Bandai, and won't be the last.. i remember the GM/GM weapons box advertise the sniper rifle being "held" / "supported" by the GM/GM ('s left hand) despite it not having a splayed hand (and the pack didn't give any).

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And it feels so evil how Bandai just does a slight of hand and they can say they didn't hide it and it's just the consumers who didn't see it. It used to happen a lot on old kits but old kits are kind of clumsy and it's easier to overlook than something from 2021

    Thanks for the insight into injection molding!I put your video on while I was working on the Perfect Strike Freedom and I paused it to stare at the dragoons on the runner trying to comprehend how they followed the rules you laid out. I didn't really reach a conclusion cause I have a tough time determining how they got them as single molded pieces with a slightly curved shape but it was an interesting thought exercise for sure and something your videos bring to the table that other model kit reviewers don't, which I appreciate!

    Man. Don't know why but this brings back memories lol.
    My first ever kit was the HGUC Gundam revive and yeah I know it's old now compared to what we get now, but to this day it's the most durable kit I've built. Built that thing when it was 2017 and I'm already 19 now and that thing is still standing! It's also the first time I bought an additional item to go along with a kit. I bought the Gundam hammer set from that ace hobby magazine and while my hammer broke, I still use that hobby set for the rifle attachment, the wolverine beam sabers, the extra beam rifle and of course those wonderful cannons that can be used like the Gun Cannon or like the Full Armor Gundam wrist cannons. I always have a little regret buying a kit and only on a few kits I'm happy to not have any regrets. This whole situation even with the broken hammer I don't regret a single thing here. Maybe I'm just a bit too emotional and maybe I'm a bit blinded by this kits faults cause it's my first kit, but overall I love the hell out it.
    Sorry for the word vomit btw, I just really get oddly emotional when it comes to everyone's first kit. Loved the review and I enjoy the little updated details of the weapons. It's a shame though that not all of them hold up. However, I'm glad we now have an easier time getting these.

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Wolverine Beam Sabers" is a nice way to put that oddball three-pronged saber(?). I think other than the javelin/hammer of those sets, the Super Napalm attachment on the rifle really is a rare item that you don't get with any other 1/144 RX-78. And you're right that the cannons are meant to be similar to the ones on the FA Gundam
      Your early kit experiences will really stay with you, I know mine sure do:)

      To this day, I'm still kinda sad we didn't get a HG FA Gundam. We got the Thunder Bolt version, we get one of the weapons with the Blue Destiny Unit 3, we have this magazine kit that allows you to make the gun, we even have the Heavy Gundam which in lore is the successor to the Full Armor. Yet we don't have any 1/144 HG of the Full Armor Gundam! It's just weird to me. Cause it's fairly popular yet it just doesn't have a kit aside from the MG and older kits.

    Nice info about the injection process.
    They gave us the hammer and javelin, but forgot about the Super Napalm.
    This talk about the addon parts for EG kits made me think how they could do once it's the EG Nu's turn:
    instead of the addon being the classic funnels, it could be the single giant one they used for the recently made statue, this way one could still buy the HG for the original combo, or buy such set and give the HG the new equip (since they're supposedly interchangeable).

    @thewannabeweeb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That was one long review for basically a few weapon add ons but man it was educational, It really does suck that the Gundam Hammer and the Beam javelin don't really work with this kit that well, Especially the Beam Javelin like what the hell Bandai just trim off that ring and it's somewhat good now despite it's clear color innacuracies and funny you mentioned the TEM weapons since I just started to look at them and I might honestly end up buying it over this kit since it packs in so much stuff even the Super Napalm is included
    And one final thing, I've told you before but I really got the short end of the stick with my EG Gundam since that thing was out of box loose and it has been loose even since and no modification I made to tighten up the joints worked unfortunately so yeah the EG Gundam is not really a great kit for the long run and you should really just go for the Revive Gundam if you want something more solid

    • @OverLordRyan

      I wonder if it's hard now to get the Tem OD sets. Even in 2015, the Beam Javelin set was much more sought after because people didn't like the weird stiff-chain hammer.
      But yeah, Bandai just tossed this javelin into the box as-is even though it doesn't work at all and it's just weird, especially when the Tem OD one ironically showed us how it could have worked for those hands.
      I've heard of loose joints too on really new / brand new kits. Back around the worldwide release, those people saying that online got blasted viciously for mishandling the kit or got the always nonsensical "mine is fine" unhelpful answer. Kinda lucky both my EG kits didn't come out that way, even though the benchmark one is loose all over now

    this really makes me worried for the line going forward. The strike and nu gundam seem to either want you to buy a hg kit or are setting up for an expansion pack later on. The first actual add on pack being this lackluster makes it seem like either they fully want you to jump straight from the eg into hg to get the accessories ( and another ms but that's another problem entirely) or that the accessories will be somewhat half baked like this.

    direct to the point yet very detailed. complete with comparisons too. I think I have a new favorite gunpla reviewer
    one small detail I noticed with the EG 1/144 Gundam Full Weapons set, though, is it doesn't have the "no nippers needed" tag and it might be because of the included beam saber effect parts. I haven't built the full weapons one, but looking at the runners, they do look like you can just pull all of the parts out of the runner without having to use a nipper, except for the beam effect parts. I've actually already tried building the EG 1/144 Gundam kit Lite package version (the one that doesn't come with any weapons at all) without using a nipper and it's actually possible.
    I bought the full weapons kits because I actually broke the hip ball joint with the lite version, but it turns out that the hip joint breaking due to tightness is a common problem with this kit, like you said. I guess I'll have to sand the ball joint a bit.
    really, your review is very detailed and is a great help. thank you for that!

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do think the no tools icon was dropped because of the beam parts. The rest of the kit certainly comes together fine without any tools
      And yeah, definitely reduce the grip on that hip ball joint to keep it from ripping off the peg, it's really quite unfortunate that's a widespread issue

    This version would look great if anyone decided to kitbash HG Revive RX78-2 with EG RX78-2, because the color hue is similar 🤔

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The colors really are quite close, though the Revive is some odd almost-anime color that I don't see on other kits, like how it avoids that green-tinted gray or the really nice orange-yellow

    What are your thoughts on cutting the best Javelin's hand guard ?

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It should be really easy to do with a knife, and I think it'll look fine, since that rim isn't too important for the look of the javelin

    Is there a decent way to "beamify" the end of the javelin?

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think so, other than coloring it pink and then spraying either light or dark colors to highlight it, but even those don't look too nice outside of still photos

    I get the feeling the EG Strike and EG Nu would follow this path.
    By that I mean releasing full accessories a few months after the stand alone kits. ( Seriously tho Bandai, why would you ask us to buy the EG Nu and get the HG Nu just for the fin funnels?)

    • @HobbyClubhouse
      @HobbyClubhouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah... both the Strike and Nu are sort of complete as-is but just short of their full equipment enough to bug people into buying another Full Weapons version if they make it a year down the line...

      Those weapons were also barely in the show and the Beam Javelin was completely gone in the movie too. They've gained a bit of status with age, though often as an oddball novelty

      @MIRAGE MAZINKAISER SAGA It would be, if not for the fact it telescopes out of the beam saber.
      With how short the sabers handle is compared to the Javelins, that thing short be as floppy and brittle as plywood.

    Bandai and sunrise could really make a killing if they stop pussyfooting around and go all in on a 0079 remake. They already teased us with what they could do to early UC with the origins and Doan’s island. They can get a lot of younger and western audience hooked by expanding the EG line with early UC designs based on simplified HGUC kits. And they can release an updated HGUC line with the same tech as the GTO line to get the older fans dropping their trousers.

    new fans getting into the hobby won't notice the minor shortcomings of the weapons. and intermediate and above that want to kit bash etc. can easily fix the shortcomings. you're being too harsh on these cheap entry grades. they're a starting point to branch off from.
