Fun fact - the creator of the show Tomino Yoshiyuki originally wanted the Gundam to be a single monotone colour as well - in either all white or all grey, so that it looks more like a piece of military equipment, but the sponsors (who make the toys) rejected that idea because the sponsors intended the show to be targeted at 7 year olds and from their own sales data they know their target audience wants bright colours on their giant robots, so as a compromise Tomino asked the mechanical designer of the show to put in the blue red and yellow highlights, but still kept a lot of the machine white like the limbs, waist and head. Tomino never gave up on the monotone idea though, so in his novelisation of the show the protagonist upgrades his original Gundam (which is technically the G-2) to the G-3 varient in the later half of the story - which only has internal upgrades but externally looks the same - but spots an entirely grey paint job. So Jayz actually unknowingly re-created the G-3 Gundam.

Gunpla is usually designed to be simple and intuitive so everyone can enjoy building them even though they're not model kit veterans. But the true beauty of the hobby comes in customization. You can buy metal parts for your kit. You can make your own custom parts. You can kitbash and create your own details. And gunpla encourages people to do just that.

I mean, I'm not going to try and act like Gunpla is ever going to be on the level of difficulty on that Yamato model, but I should correct you on a few things. The MG (Master Grade 1/100 Scale) you got is in no way worth 200 bucks. MG's are about 35 to 70. That pricepoint is more in line with PG's (Perfect grade 1/60 Scale) that have just as many runners as your Yamato with the more expensive ones also including LED kits. Yes the RG (Real Grade 1/144 Scale) kits you talked about are smaller scale with more intricate parts, but I should mention they tend to simplify the real hard parts like the inner frame and hands so they aren't as fun to build and customize like a PG is. PG is definitely worth the experience, but overall I like MG's as a good balance.

On real warfare the suits would follow colours based entirely on the environment used and that would lead to very little veariety, on shows and fiction in general is a understandable compromise to choose colorful suits to add variety and even personality.
Using a suit of the same line of production but in a different colour would make you a primary target, if the show was 100% realistcic would be boring, is just realistic enough and is fine as it is.

The kit you built is roughly $50 - so you could buy 6 for the price of your Yamato and make a nice diorama/scene. I agree ships are waaay more time consuming, but I wouldnt say much more difficult besides the glue. I personally like to use glue as little as possible on all kits. @edmunds tomsons before I start Gundams are fictional, so what type of camo is solid grey, 2 you dont need camo when your 10+ stories tall, 3 Gundams usually are colored in relation to the nation theyre from and lastly saying something is iconic then calling it dogshit makes no sense the fact that it is iconic in a positive way makes your opinion worthless. As for Jay he continued to shit talk the gundam even when he claimed hes not "trying to" , he went into it with a bias mentality so obviously his end product would look like shit.

      @oFrailWings 4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

@edmunds tomsons if you know anything about marketing and psychology prime colors (red blue green yellow )are used heavily cause its memorable, for example like McDonald's red and yellow so "all the other nonsense" includes the iconic colors of the gundam. my final point that you seemed to gloss over many countries used those same colors for the flag and it is a show about war so why not kill your enemies in you country colors. so again your opinion is useless when there is a logical reason why those colors are used.

honestly tho, it's nice to hear from an outsider perspective on gundam kits. the whole snap fit thing is really their selling point. and the fact that there is no need to paint them straight out of the box, for the most part, really draw in beginners and casuals alike. even for the high difficulty kits like the perfect grade line, so long as you follow the manual carefully, you can build them straight out of the box. then its up to you to leave it like that or improve upon what was given to you.

I know this is 5 months late, but if you wanna try building gunpla, go for it. It's fun as hell to just build them and pose them, but because they're all snap-together it opens up for doing things with them later. I've put together several kits only to go back later and clean them up better after learning some things. And they are way easier than real world military replica kits like planes and tanks and such, I personally won't touch those because I have the hobby fears that I'll ruin them and get really frustrated.
Just grab a HG 1/144 kit for about $25 (or less in many cases) and give it a go. Those are great entry level and the newer ones are even quite detailed for the size and price, especially if you go for one from the Origin series. I really like the amount of detail they have compared to kits of the same design from the past, much more grounded. Master grades are a good step up from there, Real grades seem to be hit and miss so if you want to try those really do some research to see what others are saying about them. I've yet to throw money at perfect grade, but I'll be excited to finally do so as they look a ton of fun and from what I've gathered look pretty amazing out of the box.
Anyway, sorry for the long windedness lol.

You’re comparing a $50 mid range Master Grade Gundam kit to a $200 Yamato. A Perfect Grade is a much more fair comparison, Adam Savage had his mind blown by one of those.
There’s also a lot of variety in gundam Mobile suit designs than what it looks like on the surface.
Don’t like the classic white, blue, red, and yellow colors? Get a model of a suit not used by the main character
Prefer something wildly different to the classic gundam look? Some of the antagonist suits are nuts like the Sazabi, Nightingale, and The O
Prefer a more realistic utilitarian mecha and not something that looks like a toy? Get a grunt suit like the Jesta, Jegan, and Geara Doga. Even the aforementioned antagonist suits above fit the bill.
Don’t like the level of detail? Go with an MG Ver Ka. Or Perfect Grade kit. Or scratchbuild and kitbash. GBWC is a great showcase of what’s possible.

Level of details and sizes for Gundam models go from:
    HG (High Grade) 1/144
    RG (Real Grade) 1/144
    MG (Master Grade) 1/100
    PG (Perfect Grade) 1/60

Watching at the start.. Cool Jay, I highly recommend gundam kits for model hobbyists. First point: I don't care about the anime, and you don't need to care to enjoy these. They have genius design and range from stupid easy $12 high grade to $250 monster project Perfect Grade. They're like fun puzzles or lego sets that leave you with an art piece when you're done. You've got a noteably easy (and a bit loose) Master Grade that's $42 on Amazon right now (your link doesn't work for me btw). I'm not big on painting, but I put a lot of care into cleaning nubs off and getting the stickers right. Some people who paint also completely change the anime colors to military metal schemes. Nothing sacrilegious about it and it looks badass.
Mid way... no harm, some kits come out solid as a rock, some kits explode it your hands. Reviews cover which is which pretty well. The solid connections do NOT come back apart unless you angle cut the pegs first. No one ever claimed master grade is a hard kit. Grade means quality not difficulty. Master Grade translates to "fairly detailed kit with some gimmicks".
End... I don't normally get annoyed when people talk crap about Gundams, especially when they do hard models. To each their own,.... but you complain about all Gundams just because the $40 kit doesn't stack up against your $250 kit... No sh!t. Dude, do like 5 seconds of research on things before you post about it. You know you have this problem.
There are so many different models and color schemes you can get and paint however you want, who cares if you don't like the colors on that particular kit..... Anyway, I like metallic color schemes and the wearing looks great, but you left him looking so monochromatic like he skipped paint day at the factory. Tip: Put glue on the loose joint to thicken it, let dry and then reattach it to make it stay without losing mobility.
I'm glad you had fun Jay and I hope you don't write them off. You did a good professional job putting him together too, which I didn't expect.
I'm sure a Perfect Grade MS-06F Zaku II with it's more German military style and green color scheme for $125 would be a much better choice for Jay. Though it's a bit older so it's got a loose bit here and there too. Astray Red Frame 1/60 Perfect Grade is a very new kit praised for being solid, but I know Jay won't like how it looks.

Easy enough to get to if you just build right out the box. but you can the opposite direction and add photo etch parts, metal detail parts, LEDs, scratch building, resin parts. It's that level of choice and freedom I enjoy. I can build something simple over a weekend or go all out on a week that dwarfs the Yamato in parts. I finished putting this exact model together last week...but I need to pull it apart again for painting (although I will be going with the standard colours but hopefully more realistic)

For someone who is interested in getting into model building, what kits/level do you suggest someone should start with? I know I'm a bit late, but a video on different types/levels of kits would be pretty neat.

Hi Jay! Good first build. This is actually one of the smallest of the MG kits, the larger (# of pieces) ones can have up to twice the piece count. This is also designed after the original series from 1979 so the details aren't really there. Better kits like the Sazabi are extremely well detailed, and really show true potential in the hands of creative modders which fully paint and modify or add pieces. There's many aftermarket parts available like metal jets, boosters etc that give a much larger appreciation to building. I've been building for most of my life (started at about 8, now 27) and mostly build MG and PG kits, that on average take about a month for a fully painted MG and up to 6 months for a PG with many custom lines, each piece painted individually etc. I'd love to see you do a very detailed full paint on a proper MG kit. If you have time you should look at what Mechanicore is doing as they're taking Bandai models to the next level with 2200 piece 1/120 scale models!

Honestly, I laughed a little. I love gunpla, but I've never been the biggest fan of the v fin as a design choice. I completely understand why; to hearken back to samurai armor and then it's just a staple for the hero suits. But even still, my favorite designs are the grounded, military looking designs from UC. I think that's why Zeon suits are so popular, they've got a grittier design language with the tubes and vents and the bulkier limbs.
