  • During UFC 239 Jones vs Santos, Ben Askren was knocked out just seconds into the fight after taking a flying knee to the head from Jorge Masvidal. If you noticed, his body became really stiff after getting concussed, and in this video we'll explain what this means and why it can happen after a serious concussion! Can you make a video on the long-term impacts of MMA/boxing on the brain and how it compares to other contact sports (hockey, football)? I know this isn’t super well understood at this point, but it seems weird that hockey/football could be worse than getting punched in the face for a living. I understand the frequency difference (16 or 82+ games per year vs. 2-3 fights per year)… but hell man, getting KO’d cold once or twice a year must be worse, no?

      Think there are quite a few videos on the lomg term effects of boxing. Some pretty horrific stuff.

    • @Dwight_Lee
      @Dwight_Lee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Boxing is the worst for the brain. I'm sure hockey and football are worse than MMA(most of the time). I see most guys take very hard hits every game for both those sports. Very few MMA fight cards have even 33% knockout rate. Most damage seems to be to connective tissue in MMA due to grappling or catching a hit the "wrong way" (like kicked in the knee)
      I'd like to see some study's though, if there's any good one out there

    • @mrdune5479
      @mrdune5479 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's precisely why I'm so interested for the video! As far as I understand he shouldn't have had any stabilization of the knee. I can't quite understand how he fought for over 20 minutes in that condition.
      My only theory is the tears started in the first round and the majority of the damage happened later in the fight.

    • @metalheadmnw
      @metalheadmnw 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      During the first round you can see when santos knee goes. He immediately starts limping on it and changes stances for a minute or so. I believe he was throwing a leg kick with his left. Plus jones with those front leg kicks doesnt help. But my friends and i, and i believe joe rogan during the broadcast too, all said so when it happened. It looked bad.

    It seems to be a reflexive response where the brain, or body, assumes you have sustained the injury through falling? The reflex does not know about fighting, but it knows that falling down, being knocked unconscious means there are no further attempts to further shield the head from more impacts via falling even further so it's up to the body to shield the bodies important parts from more impacts, via throwing arms outs, tensing legs, bring the arm up to shield the liver, a jelly like floppy body might help stop soft tissue damage, but it won't reduce extra dmg to the important organs by offering no resistance

  • @SpearedPage
    @SpearedPage 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Is the fencing posture an evolutionary mechanism meant to keep at bay the source of a potential threat while the subject is lying unconscious from the blow received to the head? (I.e., a mechanism designed to create distance between the concussed subject and a potential object or attacker responsible for said blow)

    I'd go even further and ask if previous experience (fighting style) affects the position (some go flat after a ko). Even more in wrestlers that seem to act by reflex in certain situations.
    And if the legs have a reason for the posture or they go stiff as a generalized response.
    Also, it looks a lot like he locked in the position he was when he got knocked out.

    when i was about 15 or 16 I got a vestibular system disorder from the earphones that you put deep inside your ear (well, that was the only explanation we came up with the doctor since i had recently bought them and was using them when it started), worst 10 days of my life followed, if I stood up i got immediate nausea and even walking 10 meters to take a piss meant usually vomiting before pissing... got these nice over-ear headphones now :D

    Only problem is you need to watch the fight from the over the head angle, and you'll see that he's not actually landing a knee on the head but his Brachial Plexus

    I wish you'd go into more detail about why this is happening at a neurological level when it comes to these signals the vestibular system is sending, and why the posturing is relatively the same across the board.

    I think it would be fun and helpful to explain the difference between a concussion closed head injury open head injury then explain the similarities.

    Is this not the the same reaction the body has to a broken neck or the brain stem being separated from the spinal chord in which it stiffens to protect itself from further injury? I’ve always heard that a sever enough concussion can cause the body to react in a similar way.

    crazy how blood flow was affected by the trauma caused by the knee kick as he was going for a takedown. 😮 looks like the region hit was temporal/frontal lobe. crazy fight!
