  • Zhang Weili defended her UFC strawweight title against Joanna Jedzejczyk at UFC 248 via split decision on Saturday night and improved to 21-1 in a wildly entertaining instant classic. But the hematoma that Joanna suffered to her forehead was absolutely huge and left many wondering what happened and how it happened.

I know what the passing out while taking a shit was a bit, but I now feel much better about the goose egg on my forehead after watching this (was worried the hematoma might clot or something). I'll continue apply preassure with a cold and monitor the swelling, thank you so much Dr. Sutterer!

I've seen it happen in the shins as well as there's basically no meat or muscle between the bone and the outer skin. It happened to me in a freak accident. It's nasty business.
The blood just pools and sits around seemingly decaying. One doctor suggested allowing the body to absorb the fluid but it would have been in the long run at a super steady rate. A wound specialist later just took some scissors and pricked me right over the hematoma. He manually pushed out dark, decaying blood and then it got weirder.
He soon introduced an iodine-soaked medical ribbon into the new cavity to raise up the skin and keep it from re-attaching in a manner that would create air pockets, so to speak. This just before a thorough internal saline flushing. Basically the skin has to gradually reattach from the outer perimeter in toward the hole. The ribbon got shorter as the cavity closed in. Now there's just a bit of a dark dent on my leg.
For about a month or so I became a human candle with a wick sticking out of my leg. Good times ;) I don't believe that's how John Wick got his name, though.

The cutman used a cold towel with compression, just not good enough, only used endswell after it was already ballooned, I think a big bag of ice is much better it contours to the face and covers more suface area then a endswell,!! Question As a doctor what is you're opinion on cutman/women using adrenaline 1-1000 on cuts n lacerations, there is also quick-aid which is much better for laceration and is all natural Vasoconstrictor which is allowed in MMA but not boxing as of yet! Do you have any issues with what cuts persons use in-between rounds to keep the fighter in the fight? 👍

Scarred vessels from the 1st hematoma more likely to rupture causing it again in the Zhang fight? Will this be a recurring issue for her?

I've been hoping to hear a medical opinion on fight injuries for the longest time. From a professional. MD.
Maybe you could do a video on the consequences of taking blows to the head. Is it as dangerous as some of us (civilians) think? Are the flows not comparable to hitting one's head on a coffee table or are punches not as severe? I get it can vary (speed of fall...etc.). I mean, we see world champions in interviews after retirement and they can still put together sentences. Hold conversations. Yet, some fighters have died (e.g. Korean fighter after a fight with Ray Mancini...boxer...Muay Thai fighters in Thailand..taking elbows, knees punches and kicks to the head constantly...)...

If an incision was made on the head where the blood from the head could drain (hopefully without hurting her vision) would this reduce the overall injury ie if the start of the injury appearing and incision was made there and then would it have made sure it would not be able to swell as much as in a fight when judging damage at the end a big injury like that compared to a load of blood on the canvas but only a small cut (which would be cleaned at the end) be more beneficial to a fighter just cold press it and hope for the best ive personally wondered this myself as a fighter which one would be better for me do I open the hepatoma or just press it cold
