  • DK Metcalf measured a 1.6% body fat at the 2019 NFL combine (among setting a crazy 40 yard dash time!)
How do they test body fat, and if it's even possible to be at 1.6%, is it healthy?

Really appreciate the response on this vid, but never intended it to be about whether or not this number is possible haha. I hoped it would just help teach everyone about how they do these tests and the general risks of having super low body fat. Yes, you should question people (even us doctors!) 1.6% certainly is a number that seems impossible and maybe i should have been more up front about that, but it wasn't what i was trying to help teach you all in the video. But as always, I appreciate people watching, commenting, and i hope you are all still learning something!!

Looking at him, I figured his body fat percentage wasn't quite that low, but NFL combines tend to be full of hyperbole, strictly to produce ratings, of which it succeeded greatly.

Brian Sutterer MD there is a ZERO % chance he is 1.6%. Organ failure starts around 3%. The fat in the bottom of your feet starts to really disappear around 4-5% he wouldn’t even be able to walk yet alone be alive at 1.6. You should have addressed that the number was completely false. Everyone is believe this garbage and hyping a man who is easily 8-10% bf.

That may not have been your intention, but it's really an unavoidable part of the topic. The truth about body fat measurement is that there is no precise way to measure it. They can come up with increasingly more creative ways to come up with a relative approximation of a body fat percentage. But there is no legitimately accurate way to measure it, period. And it's also just plain stupid to think that number is even remotely close to being accurate. Your body requires fat to maintain proper health and performance. There is no way possible anybody could be that low in body fat and not have a whole host of health issues, let alone be able to perform like an elite level pro athlete.

At that size I'd peg him around 7% simply because I can't see if his squads or glutes have visible striations. That would be a giveaway for a 5% prediction. If he doesn't have that, hes like 7 or 8 but simply stores more fat in the lower body which is common.

Tired of Being Average I don’t disagree. There are physiological abnormalities within the human family. The 2-3% was cited in a Sports Illustrated article on Heisman Trophy winner Charles White at USC. They included that info in the article because it was so abnormal. That was in the early 80’s and body fat was becoming a popular subject in the world of fitness and gym culture. They mentioned in the article the trainers at USC had never heard of anyone testing below 7% and that world class marathon runners are around 10%. It was the first info I had ever read about body fat. There are always exceptions.

Anybody who knows bodybuilding knows that this guy definitely ISNT 1.6% bodyfat. This is literal deathbed levels of body fat. Bodybuilders in competition are usually around 4-10% BF but there is a reason why in their offseason they are more like 10-15%. This level of body fat is not sustainable for a long period of time, or isn't healthy for that matter because as mentioned test goes down, hormones are out of whack, you feel extremely fatigued, etc. With that said, it wouldn't make sense why a football player would diet down before a combine. Because dieting down to single-digit levels of body fat will decrease your performance, while in a combine the objective is to be at peak performance.
Without a doubt, the guy looks very lean, but definitely not 1.6% body fat. Being 6'3, 227 lbs makes that even more suspicious. I would guess around 10-11%. People don't realize that 10-11% is VERY lean and 6'3 227 lbs at that low body fat is really quite remarkable period. It makes me think that perhaps this number was embellished or that they did this test wrong or that it isn't as accurate as people say it is. But I think whoever did the test probably messed up.
    pbs.twimg.com/media/D0hk5o3X4AA5wYB.jpg
This is Alberto Nunez, bodybuilder around 4-6% BF. Yes everybody looks different but a person this low will see extreme vascularity, even vascularity in the abs, chest, head. I think it's pretty clear that Metcalf isn't on that level. You also have to consider visceral fat.

@Adrien Perez The typical "he's a (insert profession here) so he can't be wrong" defense. Can't tell you how many times I cringe when somebody says this. As if doctors are incapable of having their own biases, can never be wrong, have missed out on certain points. As if there aren't crazies in the industry from Dr.Oz who literally got called out by the senate for misleading and lying to people, Dr. Jason Fung who pretty much denies what has already been established as pretty much fact.
Not implying the Dr is one of those guys in the industry, he is right about the effects of having a dangerously low body fat. However what was quoted was one SINGLE study that showed on AVERAGE it was 2% off from other methods like DEXA. This does NOT mean it couldn't be off by more than that.
In fact that same study showed that the Bod Pod could be off by as much as 6%. Other studies show that hair, temperature, moisture significantly affects readings on the Bod Pod by as much as 2-3% on AVERAGE.
      www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15059287
      www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11346675
The study contained in this article which compares DEXA and the Bod Pod also notes that differences were measured as high as 13% BF! Also of note is that the Bod Pod tends to be way less accurate in very lean individuals, such as DK Metcalf.
      examine.com/nutrition/an-accuracy-thing-measuring-body-fat-percentage/
Bod Pod is also terrible at tracking changes over time. A friend of mine did the Bod Pod 3 times in 3 months. Gained a few lbs and somehow he went from 14%, 14% to 8% BF. I did Bod Pod and DEXA and I got measured as 12% and 16% respectively (the DEXA was probably more accurate IMO). DEXA scans use a 4 compartment model as opposed to a 2 compartment model which the Bod Pod is.
Well known in the nutrition/fitness industry as a top researcher in this area, this is James Krieger's conclusion of Bod Pods. He has a masters in Exercise Science and Nutrition, and coaches clients on weight loss management as well. An actual researcher rather than a general MD.
      weightology.net/the-pitfalls-of-body-fat-measurement-part-3-bod-pod/
If a doctor told you to jump off a cliff because it is better for your health would you do it? You're one of those guys that just blindly follows what anybody says without question because they are a so called professional and incapable of researching a topic, using logic and coming up with your own independent thoughts. Stfu if you have nothing to contribute lmao. I only speak facts here while you just troll and blindly follow whatever anybody has to say.

It's considered the gold standard for body compost testing and research shows if anything it's only ~2% off, even compared to dexa scans and water testing. Yea 1.6 sounds crazy, and I'm sure it's an underestimation. But it's no far enough off to make this still an unhealthy body fat

I don't doubt the Bod Pod. I doubt the human beings recording and reporting the data. I have a strong feeling a decimal place was missed. Just looking at his recent pics, he looks like he has 11.6% body fat. Which would be in line with what he actually looks like visually. Someone messed up when they recorded his data, and another person didn't bother to think critically and question the data. I don't even think it's actually possible to be less than 2-3% and still be alive. Correct me if I'm wrong, you need that much just to be able to make the different components of your cells. Your body's cells are partly made of lipids. At 1.6% body fat, I'm not sure your body would even be able to undergo enough cell division to completely replace it's cells, let alone create energy stores. This reeks of human error, not machine error.

RuthlessFitness TECHNICALLY, muscle and fat weight the same. 1 pound of fat is the same as 1 pound of muscle. (Obviously). But fat takes up more space, since it is “fluffy”. A pound of muscle is smaller than a pound of fat. This means if you filled up the same area with fat, then with muscle. The muscle would weigh more.

the realG not necessarily anyone above 15% barely has his abs showing and can actually have no visible ab definition, I’m in that area and mine are visible but nowhere near a defined 6 pack

then you are not 15% so stfu . I was 15% before i cut down last summer and my abs were showing fully. Also look up mattdoesfitness. He was 14% with abs showing. If you used callipers then they are very wrong! When i was 14% with dexa scan. The callipers said i was 9%@@joshhampton6511

I was once tested with a really low BF%, too by skinfold methods. Yes, I was very scrawny, but when my instructor re-did it, he still warned me about my low percentage because most of them were distributed in my thighs, but it was still nowhere near as ridiculous as 1.6%.

During the combine most drills for wide receiver drills are timed, he probably walks around with more body fat but dropping down to 1.6% most definitely helped him shave time off his 40... just something to consider

Not so long ago, my gym had an offer of some sort where you get a free session with a personal trainer, and the Pt that saw me asked me to take off my shoes and socks and stand on this weight measure looking thing.
    Turned out I have a bf% of 7.something.
He said that that’s great and that I’m doing very well!
I did mention that I played competitive soccer for many years, and that I was working out for hypertrophy .. any thoughts ?

    Unrelated question:
What's worse? A rupture of a tendon or 5 severe strains of that same tendon over 10 years?
Is the damage of multiple strains added up???
I had 4 or 5 bad strains on my right ankle and some friends said that's actually worse than one rupture would have been.
Please, I'm worried...I'm 32 and looking into my odds at a late soccer career ;)

I ran track with some one who was ripped and had to go to the hospital because they got down to 3% ran a 500m dash and it almost killed them literally. He won the even but landed in the hospital that evening. For any track athlete you have to eat carbs and give you body something to work with the night before because you are not going to do a lot of eating the day I’ve the meet unless you like cramping and making your digestive system work in reverse
