    I think this incident, in a way, vindicates Derrick Rose's decision not to play after he was cleared by doctors. Everybody criticised him. Now people are criticizing the doctors for clearing a player and he reinjured himself. MJ rushed back from a broken foot [to score 63pts vs the Celtics] and he himself wished he didn't. Ultimately, it's the player's choice and we should respect their choice. They know their body better than we do.

      No. The Warriors should consult him (or someone similar) for an objective second (confirming) opinion. No confirmation; no play. This in-house only consultations is asinine .... it's like asking your 4 year old who the best parent in the world is.

    • @innismor11
      @innismor11 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @D K You miss my point (entirely); the point is Warriors hung two players careers out to dry by not having outside confirmation they were good to go. They certainly killed next season's chances of winning a championship by going after one this year at 3% odds (being down 3-1). But, then again, you knew all that.

If nothing else, hopefully, these injuries will lead to research that will give us insight into how to prevent injuries like this, rather than just treat them.

    truly support load management, it sucks when come playoffs time some stars are unable to play due to injuries, and some do get back to playing due to pressure (it's playoffs) resulting to more injuries. not worth it imo, resting some games is better than resting for half or full season because of a major injury incurred :(.

      @dabdelaziz777 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I listened to a Jeremy Lin interview today and he said some interesting things about how he started some games to give the regular starting back court rest in the later part of the season. This is key. Additionally I commented on that video that he should feel that he deserves the championship ring because this was part of the process that kept the Raptors team healthy. Notice how none of their players suffered any injuries during the playoffs that kept them out of games. OK, the Raptors didn't play in the last four championship series, I know someone will make this point. But, also because of the fact that the Raptors had a better regular season record, that gave them an edge of home court against every other possible opponent in the playoffs except for the Bucks. Look at how poorly the GSW played during the regular season compared to their previous regular seasons. Additionally I did hear sports commentators mention that this year's GSW medical team was new.
      Say what you want. I know the GSW couldn't resist the allure of having a new championship banner raised at their first home game in their new arena next season and being able to say they threepeated just like the great Bulls teams did. That had to be a huge driver in the decision making to get KD back. The fact that KD was basically no longer under contract after he was injured during the Rockets series was a secondary issue. Could you imagine the GSW putting him back out there if he had another year on his contract??? Clearly this is a factor that only the GSW management has the information on how much this was either in the back of their minds or even perhaps it was discussed. We'll never know.

    Motivation to cover up an Achilles tear: KD is a free agent, Warriors have a tremendous amount of respect for KD and understand he was going to leave. Clearly and Achilles tear would significantly reduce his value vs a “calf strain”. Not saying this is true, but this is a legitimate reason as to why the Warriors May have lied.

    • @Biesel
      @Biesel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Exactly. And the ice was always down on the back of his heel not up on his calf. It's too much of a coincidence to tear your Achilles after just being cleared totally of a "calf injury" which isn't connected.

      COULD HAVE. Some teams may be like that. You have to know the ownership, front office, coach, and their track record, to have an opinion on that. Knowing what I’ve read about this org., And what they’ve always said, They’ve never wanted to risk an athlete’s career to have him play. It seems they ALWAYS are holding them out longer than both the athlete and the fans want!! Only Kevin knows for sure, but I trust the Warriors organization because of their track record. And no one but the players and doctors know them well enough to have an opinion on a particular organization.

So I've heard that there are corticosteroid injections which can help speed the recovery of a strain, the downside of these injections is that it may weaken some other structures. What if this was the case with KD? What if he got some of these injections to speed his recovery in hopes of playing again but his achilles tendon was weakened by them which led to his torn achilles? Please let me hear your thoughts on this. Love your videos and I get a lot from them, keep up the good work!

And as it stands at this moment, who do you think has it worse, Klay or KD?

    0:50 Teams don't disclose the full extent of injuries all the time and mentioning the Achilles is much more alarming to most people than just calling it a calf strain.
    Believing it was less severe would keep their opponents worried about him coming back quickly so they'd use different strategies like resting their stars a little more so they'd be ready when he returned. Also with KD's tough and private nature he may have led his own team and trainers to believe it wasn't as bad as it was, on purpose or unintentionally.
    Either way though great video.

    I know there are some videos already explaining this, but would it be possible for you to make a video on how to strengthen/stretch your achilles tendon to avoid what happened with Durant? I know injuries can occur at any given moment but I'm sure there are ways to prepare your body for heavy workloads?

    Just curious here. Could the cushioning systems in contemporary sneaker tech be a factor in calf/lower leg injuries? I noticed Iggy with a similar injury in the lower calf but on the other side. KD had recently switched into the latest iteration of his sneaker line and I noticed Iggy wore the KDs until switching to the Kobe 4 protros. May not correlate, but just had to throw that out there.

      Ice was at the very top of his achilles which is also the same spot as at the very bottom of his calf muscles - so really no way for any of us to be sure.

    I had a very similar injury to the calf area when I was playing basketball a few years ago. I planted my foot to make a sudden stop and felt a pop in the exact same area that Kevin Durant grabbed right after his initial injury and and like KD, I couldn't tell if it was my calf or Achilles because it was right where they meet and it was very deep and completely isolated. It felt like someone drove a nail right between my calf muscles and right underneath it, but very deep inside. 13 months later I was playing in my weekly league as I have done all my life and I went to make a quick change of direction and tore my Achilles. Knowing how that injury feels, it can fool you into a misdiagnoses very easily. Having had both of those injuries, I definitely think one leads to another. My opinion is that it's a high Achilles tear located just below the calf and extremely deep and almost underneath the calf muscles. It's literally tucked away deep inside and you can't exactly tell where it's located at because if the depth of it.

    Will the arm injury series be continued? I’ve seen many doctors say that the increase of velocity in modern baseball and high pitch counts lead to arm injuries, but then we have Nolan Ryan who pitched until he was 46 and once threw over 200 pitches in a game! Nolan Ryan is one of the hardest throwers in the history of baseball and has probably the highest career workload ever, and yet he avoided arm injuries before we really knew the intricacies of the pitcher’s arm health. Would love to see your explanation on that subject!

    Recently I’ve been having mild calf and Achilles pain on and off mostly from being in uncomfortable shoes at work. Now I’m kinda afraid of playing basketball and being active because I’m so paranoid of rupturing my Achilles. Like I went to physical training and got checked and I passed all the tests like standing on my toes and doing all of the stretches. But I’m still too paranoid to go back into playing. I hate this injury

    Regarding misdiagnosis - the prevailing theory behind this is that the team doctors or team management PUSHED the calf strain diagnosis to the player and others in order to minimize the issue. This is a business we are talking about. The player in question is part of their product. The goal of the business is to increase revenue. So it is in the best interest of the business to have the product available for public consumption as much as possible. Some are implying that the team doctors and people that were aware of the actual issue simply rebranded it.
    If a player sustains an injury, the first person to likely be notified of the test results would not be the player himself, but management. Many are suggesting the team doctors, or more over the team management down-played this injury and labeled it as a calf strain. If you all recall, the actual specific injury was never listed on the team chart. Durant was simply out with "an injury". That was an important piece because in hindsight no one would be able to point back at what the prior injury actually was.
    The most logical conclusion here is very straight forward. Durant initially had a achilles related injury in which he had a slight tear in his achilles tendon. Sure the calf could have been involved in that injury but that is unlikely the case. If the team said publicly that Durant had suffered a minor achilles related injury and stated "this is a very minor issue and Durant should be back in one week", the media would have overblown the situation. As soon as the team says achilles, that is all anyone will hear. Even if they say the injury is minor, everyone would advise Durant not to play to risk further injury. His family, friends, media, most everyone would have said this. If instead the team states it is an uncertain foggy calf injury then his family, friends, and media would have little concern about this injury becoming worse.
    What does the team have to gain from this? Everything. Stating this is calf related rather than achilles is good from a PR standpoint. It is better for business. The players are employees of the company. They are told whichever version of the truth that the business decides.
    Given that sports business is dishonest and primarily cares about money, this conclusion is by far the most logical.
    The alternative is that a freak accident happens to his calf. Upon return he has a freak magic UNRELATED major accident? What are the odds of this happening in this sequence? 50,000,000:1? Think about it deeply. This is very difficult to swallow when you have empirical business practices staring you in the face as the more logical conclusion
    1) I am suggesting that Durant was told it was a calf strain. Therefore not knowing of any issue to his achilles, be it minor or major, Durant would think he could return soon. More over Durant would feel himself at 100% and provide zero restraint.
    2) I am suggesting that Coach Kerr was also told it was a calf strain. This would mean once the player is cleared the coach would have no qualms about having the player in the games. Coach would not utilize load management, or minute restriction, which is what happened.
    3) I am suggesting that the team doctors are on the company payroll and answer to the President of Basketball Operations. It is in their best interest to follow whatever narrative that the business wants to project.
    4) The only person we see showing guilt, shame, regret is Bob Myers. He gave fake tears throughout his press conference. To me his "emotion" was that of someone that made the wrong decision, knew they made the wrong decision, and now has regret over his actions. He is a businessman. The players on the team are his products.
    From a business standpoint, which is what this actually is, misleading. This is a 3.5 billion dollar company. I could write an essay on their financial earnings and market place value alone.
    So from a MEDICAL standpoint it is nearly impossible that team doctors MISDIAGNOSED the injury, that is correct. From a BUSINESS standpoint, it is highly probable that the business mislead the narrative to downplay the situation. They pushed the product to market (RTM) during alpha testing and the product failed due to the underlying issue. Typical business mismanagement when behind deadline and pushing an incomplete product while hiding the issues.
    Harvard Business School class of 2004. I would wager my degree on this analysis.

    I love the channel, but kind of curious. Would player injuries be subject to HIPAA? Like could a player simply indicate to his or her team that they did not want any details of their injuries revealed?? I know that some teams are incredibly vague when it comes to injury reports(ie "lower body injury"). But could a player opt to noy have any official statement regarding an injury be released?

    • @wendyweaver8749

Great video, like how Doc breaks it down and I'm convinced that the decision to allow KD back onto the court was a well informed decisions. Hey man, sh*t happens, and it did here. At the end of the day, KD is a grown man and he alone made the ultimate decision. No one to blame here, move along.

    @parkerjones6598 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Doctor Sutterer, I have a few questions, one related to the video but they other not related to it. If you happen to have the time to answer I would greatly appreciate it.
    (First of all, wouldn’t it make sense that these injuries be interrelated anyway?? The kinetic chain would definitely suggest that they would be connected considering that they are so close together)
    1. Why do you think the Warriors wouldn’t want to cover up this injury knowledge? Don’t you think it’s something to play down knowing that the media could potentially find this info and “crucify” Golden State (in a way) because their chances of winning a championship are all of a sudden uncertain?? Even though the players are not necessarily fazed by it, the less people that know, the better?
    2. So I have a small pain below my patellar tendon when I run, it hurts when I slightly squat on one leg (kind of like a loading action) and when I lift my leg up behind me (like a driving action). I feel like Osgood-Schlatter disease is possible b/c I’m 6’2” and 160 and I haven’t necessarily stopped growing as far as I know. It could also be that I hit it on the ground or something else. If it’s OS disease, do you think, ice/naproxen/stretching/myofascial release can relieve pain? I know I sound like a cliche athlete, but I would like to keep running through this if I can alleviate it eventually. However, I am willing to eliminate lower body for the time being if it helps me from making it worse.
    Thanks,
    Parker Jones
