Stopping Thinking in Meditation is Not the Goal

  • Stopping thinking in meditation or controlling thoughts is not the goal, Rupert explains, when a man asks him if he has many thoughts when he meditates or is he pure awareness. In many traditional spiritual practices, 'thought' is something to be got rid of, to be denied.
    In non-duality the approach to thinking is different. This is not a way of discipline, practice, effort, suppression. It's a way of understanding, a way of recognition.
    The goal is not getting rid of thoughts or the ego. Nor are we trying to control, still or stop the mind, sometimes referred to as calming the monkey mind. Thoughts come and we have no desire to stop them or change them. The goal is to recognise our true nature and the nature of reality, then to express that understanding in our activity in the world.
    A path of discipline, effort or practice would be a path of the separate self. This is a way of understanding that that separate self does not exist - we can't change or discipline what does not exist. There is not awareness and a separate self. There is only awareness or being, plus thoughts and feelings that make it seem as though awareness is limited. Therefore, the separate self is an imaginary limit of awareness. An imaginary limit awareness has of itself.
    God's being clothes itself in thoughts and perceiving, but ultimately there are no independent beings or selves. There is only one being, clothed in human or limited experience.
    So this is a way of recognising who we are, not disciplining who we are not.
    Thinking can be a beautiful tool, a beautiful activity. Our thoughts and feelings and in time our activities and relationships will all change as our understanding changes, but that is a by-product of this understanding, not the goal.
    This clip was taken from one of Rupert's in-person retreats at Froyle Park in the UK (14 - 18 January, 2022).

    UP-COMING ONLINE RETREAT - THE WAY OF RECOGNITION (February 18 - 20, 2022)
    Rupert's next Online Retreat is called the Way of Recognition, where we will explore numerous pathways back to our essential self to discover the peace and quiet joy that is our true nature.
    The guided meditations and discussions that take place at the event will unveil our essential nature from the content of experience, thereby changing the way we feel the body and perceive the world. This helps us to not only recognise the nature of our being but increasingly feel that we share our being with everyone and everything.

    What I have learned from Rupert is that meditation is to stay willingly in this “infinite space” of consciousness in which all thoughts arises and disappear, in which all thoughts are known and out of it all thoughts are made. I don’t need any other teaching than that !

    The questioner clearly meant the form of compulsive thinking that creates all the struggles in one's life and not a formulation of intentions as thoughts, what Rupert was talking about. I have been with Rupert for the last 2 years but times like these it shows, at least for me, that he either hasn't suffered deeply from the former or he has forgotten about it.

      Oh interesting. Yes, I was reflecting on this in my own experience recently. How my thoughts used to feel so consuming and tormenting. My experience of thoughts was so different to what ir is now. Like a nightmare.
      I was considering recently how our way of approaching these kind of thoughts may have to be a little different. For me, more harmonious thinking came about as a byproduct of finding within myself a sense of safety, and learning that there is nothing wrong with me. Learning to let myself be. Less fixing, picking and prodding. Maybe it's more of a person-based nervous system approach.

    I have to point out that Zen meditation is also the direct path. The short introduction was, imagine you are the mountain and the passing clouds are the thoughts. So when sitting and noticing that you are flying with the clouds through breath or sensing into the body or concentrating on the wall before me or the sounds you notice the eternal moment. The mind chatter becomes more quiet and the final outcome is that you are the mountain who does not have to get involved with clouds. You are more and more in control of what thoughts to follow or not. It is effortless and direct approach. If it takes long for people then only because what has been described here is to apply artificial discipline and whatever the mind's approach is to obscure the real seeing. The introduction has not been understood. Simple. Thank you Rupert, love your pointings as to me it is the same than Zen.

    Dear Robert, I’ve only just come across your videos and talks on TH-cam having enjoyed many hours in the company of teachers such as Tolle, Watts, Moodie and others and I just want to thank you for taking a simple and direct approach in your choice of speech.
    I get the impression that many who consider themselves to be a spiritual guide have a habit of using quite embellished language that while lyrical can create a barrier to anyone who doesn’t consider themselves of a ‘spiritual bent’.
    Jargon that keeps the uninitiated outside.
    These ideas and teachings are so important and it’s sad to reflect that it may well be the majority who would benefit more so even than those already attuned to seek such wisdom, and that is why plain language is so important.
    So thank you and I shall certainly be tuning in for more.
    On the question of 'stopping thinking during meditation' I have come to feel that most goals or striving are counter productive to learning to simply 'be', and that indeed without thoughts arising quite naturally when we are trying to place our attention at a single place it is these interruptions that afford us the opportunity to witness our thoughts as 'other' and therefore achieve some freedom from their lure.
    I used to feel quite frustrated when my mind wandered until this actual benefit dawned and became an opportunity to feel grateful instead of angry.

      I believe Rupert said "We are Being clothed in human experience." NOT beings (plural). Unless I heard Rupert wrong. I think he was referring to the One Consciousness expressing as many different things. That One Consciousness is sometimes described as Being. Not that your statement is wrong since Being is expressing Itself as an infinite number of beings. And each of those beings is choosing to experience what it is like to be human.
      I like your statement of focus on the values of The Infinite Being. Those would be love, honesty, truthfulness, transparency, integrity, forgiveness, non-judgementalness, friendliness, kindness, affection, appreciation, compassion, gentleness, strength, joy, gratitude, freedom, creativity, passion, peace, harmony, balance, respect, reverence and more.

    Get rid of the ‘I-thought’. So long as ‘I’ is alive, there is grief. When ‘I’ ceases to exist, there is no grief. Consider the state of sleep -Ramana Maharshi
    The degree of the absence of thoughts is the measure of your progress towards Self-realization. But Self-realization itself does not admit of progress, it is ever the same. The Self remains always in realization. The obstacles are thoughts. Progress is measured by the degree of removal of the obstacles to understanding that the Self is always realized. So thoughts must be checked by seeking to whom they arise. So you go to their source, where they do not arise. -Ramana Maharshi
    Though Rupert means well and also explains it simply, however, to say that getting rid of thought is unnecessary is incorrect and does not lead to true realization. Thoughts conceal your nature, they tie you to thinking that you are an individual connected to a body. Even if you can recognize that you are Consciousness but still have thought appearing to you you are only going half-way. This becomes only conceptual and does not change your state of being, as you are still thinking that you are Consciousness. Instead of of thinking I'am this body, you are thinking I'am consciousness. Consciousness is being, it does not think, thinking is the mind or Ego. The Ego is now just playing another game of identity, it is another mask that John smith wears. This Ego or I is built of thoughts, and the only way to get rid of it is by getting rid of thoughts.
    In Self-enquiry you do not need to forcefully get rid of thoughts as the practice is to get rid of the thinker by focusing on the I or awareness. You attention or concentration should be placed on Awareness, doing so helps stop thoughts from rising. Though at the beginning thoughts will rise, but as you practice, thoughts will become less and less in which they will stop all together. Once thoughts ceases and you no longer have to concentrate in which the no-thought state becomes as natural as breathing, your true nature will shine through as being-Consciousness. You will know this is your true nature as it's obvious. It is even obvious now, but it is the thinking apparatus that makes you believe otherwise and this belief makes you feel that you are this entity inside a body looking out at the world, instead of being consciousness with the body and world inside of it. I understand that Rupert says that his approach is different than that of traditional Advaita, and that there is no need to get rid of thoughts or the Ego as they are an illusion., but this practice is conceptual only, and will only take you half-way. Recognizing you are Awareness is a part of the practice, but the other part is to sink the mind into awareness in which all thoughts cease. When one can relax in a state of no-thought or no mental activity, then this is true silence and bliss. You do this all the time in deep sleep, only that you are not aware of it. Do it in waking and you will see.

      Wow your comment was really thought provoking. Can you tell if I am doing this right
      So I when meditating I think of what Im seeing(eyes closed or open) as just a screen which Im aware of, The screen exists inside me and it is present because I'm aware of the senses, and think of thoughts arising as the mind . So I take thoughts as something that arises in the mind and ends in it and myself as observing all of the process.
      But Im afraid that this might just be me thinking or imagining this and not really being at a distance from the mind and body.
      Can you suggest if this is the right approach or not.
      I've also tried doing the who is observing the ' I ' thing during meditation but it just turns into an intellectual exercise where I'm trying to find something. And one of Ramana Maharishi's quote said to find 'who you are' rather than where you are.

      I disagree. The ego or self is like a dragon. You can try to kill it(which you never will) or you can tame it. Without thought at all you would be like an animal relying solely on instinct. Thought is a tool and was meant to be useful or we wouldn’t have it in the first place. Without thought you could not design, build, communicate, plan for the future, write, or function as a human being. Also, you would be easy to control by people in power who are seeking to create submissive thoughtless zombies. The predatory type would love pushing the idea of “don’t think”.

    I love Rupert and his teachings, and have been to several of his retreats. It is my experience, however, that he takes an intellectual approach to the nondual understanding; which I've come to view as of limited benefit (personally speaking). There is a place to investigate the human experience, which for most of us is deeply rooted in non-productive thinking. As I've delved deeper into the nondual teachings, I've gotten tremendous benefit from the teachings that help you see that you are indeed NOT your thoughts, and to cultivate a deeper sense of being that is largely quiet and peaceful. I've found the teachings of Nisargadatta, Ramana Maharshi and Eckhart Tolle to be very helpful in this regard.

    If people like me, fortunate enough to be born and exposed to Indian tradition, get lost in the churning of info, then I can very well understand the confusion of others.
    But its not honey's fault if one doesn't know how to squeeze the honeycomb. It is irrefutable that the ancient eastern wisdom and its systematisation is gold.
    One adept in the deep, authentic knowledge plus an expert in juicung it out for the masses via easy interpretation can transfer the real essence to all easily.
    IMHO, one major reason why we become averse such eastern electics is, that pseudo lilttle gurus men and women.. have cropped up with their lil YT channels trying guide others the way while still searching for their own truth. That is why they cannot clearly relay, reflect the original jnana. But again, why blame them? We need to ask ourselves.....what am I after? What do I want? Someone else's truth or someone who nudges me to trust my own truth?

    Dear group,
    By reading the comments I truly see that "realisation" or recognition of the Self is an individual and very personal experience.
    We are One, but yet unique in our own ways of interpret, assimilate and digest the path that is given here.
    Therefore, instead of resist different opinions and views let's embrace it with aceptance as it is for each of us.
    I was very keen on joining the weekend retreat, however after reading the comments it really put me off...
    I am not looking for debate, fight for concepts nor defend anything nor anybody, but evolve in a positive and supportive environment.
    Well...., not here, or at least, not yet for now.
    I stay in my inner silence and mental quietness.
    Thank you for attention.

    @David Bee -- through experimentation, I see the truth in what you describe in your comment -- intellectual rationalisation does appear to impose a hard limit. I have only listened to a handful of Ruperts talks and your description resonates with my experience thus far. There is also much to be understood between thinking vs compulsive thinking. Meditation can alleviate the effects of compulsive thinking and allow space for simply being, which does include (non-compulsive) thinking. Simply "being" is a state of true peace. Thought/thinking in the peaceful state of being is where joy, inspiration and enthusiasm is experienced.

    Maybe someone can clarify: Why we have only a glimpse of the infinite intelligence but at the same time we have access to all the infinite stupidity? Thank you.

    • @brianlittrell797
      @brianlittrell797 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      From my perspective "infinite stupidity" exists because we have chosen to undergo forgetfulness. A temporary amnesia. Our soul/higher self wants to experience growing, evolving, unity, oneness. The only way for us to experience growing in our awareness of our divine nature and who we are is for us to experientially forget our divine nature, our divine attributes, qualities, abilities. We forget who we are so that we may grow in our experience of who we are. The growing is sometimes painful and involves suffering but as we continue to grow the pain and suffering becomes less and less and the joy and enjoyment of the process of remembering becomes greater and greater. The suffering and stupidity is temporary then and unfortunately unavoidable at the lower levels of awareness/remembering.
      A high level of experiential awareness of our divine nature/divine essence is the experience of tremendous peace, joy, love, wisdom, harmony, power, abundance, beauty, creativity, passion - and all the other many things that God is. God being the Infinite Intelligence that is expressing Itself as all that exists. As we grow the glimpses become infinite access to the infinite intelligence.
      Therefore the key is to grow. Meditation and self-less service are two of the best ways to grow and be very happy and fulfilled. Selfless service is giving to others/being of service to others without wanting anything in return from them - not even their gratitude, respect or acknowledgement. Expressing gratitude/appreciation for anything good about your life or about yourself is another great way to grow. And loving yourself, self love, is very important in healing, growth and happiness.

    • @mikefoster5277
      @mikefoster5277 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Because only the intelligence itself is infinite - the 'stupidity' (or ignorance) is finite. Clearly therefore, one can only 'glimpse' the infinite intelligence, whereas the ignorance, which by nature is limited, will naturally seem more common and accessible. In other words, anything which is _not_ the infinite intelligence is, by definition, limited - effectively the 'background of ignorance' from which the 'glimpse' appears to arise.

    • @mikefoster5277
      @mikefoster5277 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@_TB808 I'd say there is only infinite intelligence _attempting_ to know itself. Of course, this attempt is ultimately futile, since the infinite can never be known or understood - even by itself! But, at the same time, the amazing result of this divine attempt at self realisation _is_ life itself and the awe inspiring universe we see and experience around us in this human form. So don't 'knock' finitude - it's an indispensable part of God's [our] purpose!

    Sorry I disagree with his perspective. There is a vast body of spiritual record that guides the spiritual aspirant to discipline the mind through the stilling of thoughts.
    This is in fact what a mantra is for and or the counting of ones breath, Slow breathing lowers the brainwaves and assists in quieting of the mind, ie. the thoughts.
    The very nature of the mind in it's linear thought process is a function of lower consciousness. You can not gain a greater awareness if you remain bound to the thinking mind. It is like looking through the key hole of the door handle and seeing one object at a time, one word at a time, rather than opening the door and seeing or becoming aware of the full nature. It is like swishing a stick back and forth, the oscillating of the mind, in a pond of water and stirring up the mud. As long as you are swishing the stick back and forth the water will remain muddy and only become clear when the stick stops disturbing the water. And it is the same with the mind, stop thinking and the darkness will settle and then clarity will arise and then you will be fit to travel into the Astral realm because you can not enter there if you do not have control over your mind. Surely that makes some sense. Greater self-control is a function of greater awareness.

      Usually our conscious minds are so clouded with uncontrollable judgements and limiters, that bringing things up from the unconscious has little long-lasting effect. The thoughts reinforce the feelings and we rapidly fall back into out emotional habits.
      If your mind in quiet, you can bring up things from the darkness “why does that noise make me angry?”, “why do i feel sad?”, “why am I jealous?”… and just look at them in the light without judging. Under such insistent exposure they quickly fall apart, because they are just illogical knots caused by trauma. You have to do it several times, but eventually the source of suffering is unraveled.

      In your conscious recognition that you are the one witnessing the thought, you then have the choice to continue giving that thought your attention or not. Subtly and over time, the awareness shifts from witnessing the thoughts to witnessing the field from which the thoughts arise.

    • @brianlittrell797
      @brianlittrell797 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, what I intuitively know to be true is that fully experiencing our true nature involves the crown chakra. Which is why in kundalini yoga they raise the kundalini up to the crown chakra to dissolve the ego and experience the Unified Self - samadhi. The third eye chakra also works too because it is a portal to the center of our soul, our higher self. And our soul/higher self is always experiencing the Unified Self which is God whenever it wishes to. Therefore the HEART chakra, third eye chakra and the crown chakra can be used as portals to fully experience The Unified Self - the totality of our consciousness and being. But it is important to be grounded and to make sure ALL 7 chakras are in a healthy and balanced state.
      I believe either the heart or the root chakra is the best place to start in terms of healing and harmonizing for most persons.

    All is one thing. One thing experiencing itself. One thing with many heads. The heads come and go, but the thing that each of those heads is continues. Continues to experience itself. Continues to create new heads. The key is to realise that we are that one thing. Not this seemingly separate head. We are the one thing viewing ourself from the viewpoint of this head. Whether the primary substance of the one thing that we are is made of consciousness that can appear as matter in order to experience itself or whether it is made of matter that possesses the potential to create consciousness from within itself in order to experience itself, it makes no difference. It’s still all one thing. We are all one thing, always have been and always will be. There is nothing else that anything can be except the one thing that is. So have fun experiencing yourself as this head, meditate to drop the mind of this head and chill as yourself (the one thing that all is), love all as it’s all part of you and always will be. When you talk to others you’re literally talking to another part of yourself. The one thing that all is will continue to make new heads to keep on experiencing itself. We are that one thing.

Are free of their ego and experiencing their true self? Would you say that peace, joy, complete fulfillment, perfect harmony, prosperity, abundance and most importantly perfect love is being consciously expressed and consciously experienced by most people in the world the vast majority of the time?

    Ramana Maharshi "Be rid of current thoughts, that is all."
    This is where Nonduality separates from Advaita Vedanta. N.D and Rupert teaches a watered-down, bastardized version of Ramana's teaching. It is for those who are not ready for liberation

    haven played with vr-glasses, i like to compare it to our experience. vr-world even thou it is still its beginnings can still easily fool our senses to believe it's real. Wearing glasses, you have to remind yourself it's not real and remember what's real or you'll be easily sucked back in. I think our body is like those vr-glasses.
