I love that we're reached a point where these technicians have a good grasp on how to do a pleasing 4K transfer with the right amount of grain to please the purist and the ... people who don't want too much grain. And HDR continues to be the stand out feature. When I'm doing my own A-->B comparisons, color is the number one thing I end up noticing.
One of the best looking 4k disc i own. It's a gorgeous 4k transfer. Felt like i was watching this gor very first time. Movie is mind blowing on 4k. Excellent 4k transfer.
I might consider adding this because recently I just added the 4k version of the howling and while I don't have a 4k DVD player I looked at the cover art on the blu ray and 4k disc and immediately could tell the difference in the picture quality. That and I watched another youtuber compare the picture quality of both and the 4k is definitely better. If I'm gonna be honest I think older movies benefit much more from 4k than new ones because film does age over time.

I am watching it and you are right on the transfer. 90% of the time great but when they show the house and zoom out you can tell when it was made. Over all it is worth the buy

Soundmix may be a licensing issue more than anything. I could have swore the DTS was cheaper than Dolby explaining why so many Blu-rays have DTS and with Dolby pushing Atmos may have required all new True HD to be Atmos? Just my thoughts.

Like your review, and yes, cleaned up on 4k would make this movie much better. The downer is that based off what you're telling everyone is that there are no new special features. Hate to disappoint, but that commentary you're talking about came out on one of the first DVD releases of the movie in the early 2000s. Your proof?? Denise Nickerson who played Violet is the first of the five kids to pass away in 2019. The type of special feature this movie could use would have to be something like scene specific commentaries, or interviews with the die hard fans, or a segment of Gene Wilder's funeral. Want a fun fact??? The book describes Wonka as short individual with a top hat along w a beard and stache,....
This movie is one of my favorites! I finally found the 4k at Best Buy and like you said is worth the upgrade. I also noticed some out of focus shots including a couple of up close shots. You mentioned wide shots but I thought I would let you know that I found some head shots slightly blurry are well. But being filmed in 1971 quality wont be real high end. But the transfer and restoration to 4k was done so well. I owned the DVD, Blu Ray and now 4k, all of the features are the same out side of the new Wonka Kids commentary. So they are a little dated. For a 50th anniversary it would have been nice to have a bit more new features.
Regarding the lack of Atmos track is simply a streamline on the studio side. Remastering the video takes long enough, but remixing a 50 year old film (which isn’t necessary for every movie) would add more time and money to the cost of the restoration. But Warner Bros are releasing the most about of catalog releases so I understand why they skip the Atmos tracks on most of them. I rather have more 4K titles with no Atmos rather than 10 movies a year with Atmos
Great that you didn't mention the aspect ratio shift from blu ray to 4k, something that alot of people seem to be going bat shit crazy about and I don't see why it's an issue, this looked fantastic and I am now the proud owner of my very own golden ticket! :)
I pre-ordered this and I am very much looking forward to it. The colors of the Blu-ray video always looked kinda ugly for me, the 4K colors look so much better. I sincerely hope they release the Burton film in 4K as well, that film would look stunning with a 4K release also.
A classic, glad it got a generally proper 4K treatment! This is a film I loved as a kid and that my Mum fondly remembers watching with her family alongside The Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music when they showed on commercial TV back in the 70’s, the only time they were allowed to watch commercial television. They were jokingly “the last family in Australia” to still own a black and white TV when colour TVs came in the mid 70s, so Mum and her siblings got invited to their neighbours quite a few times to see the films in colour! My Mum’s little sister actually cried when the black and white scene with The Wizard of Oz was on because she still thought it was black and white!! 😂
Unless there's 2 commentary tracks there, it's the commentary from the Special Edition DVD. Unfortunately WB hardly produces new features for their classic titles. I believe it was also on the 40th anniversary Blu-Ray set as well
As a film photographer, certain film stocks aren’t gonna be naturally sharp (like color film) while some BW film stocks are sharper cuz of the lack of color dyes. That being said, catalog titles getting remaster are how they would’ve been shown and that’s the beauty

Maybe someone can answer my question: when you compare the blu ray and 4K, it is evident that the 4K movie seems zoomed in. There is more picture on the blu ray, why does the 4K seem zoomed in?

It looks great, however I prefer the colours of the Blu-ray. They look richer. Wonka's jacket, for example. The purple looks better on the old version. I actually feel like the 4K version looks like when you watch your TV on standard mode, with a cool colour temperature. Blu-ray looks warmer.
I have that film on DVD in my Christmas film collection which I 9nly watch on December. I'm going to buy it on 4K blu ray though. I hope Charlie and the chocolate factory gets a 4K Blu Ray release too
For me just too pricey. I usually buy used blu rays for a few dollars. I try and save as much money as I can when buying movies. I only really buy 4k if I don’t have the blu ray and it’s not too expensive. I have about 10 4K movies and the rest are blu rays (out of 500). I actually really enjoyed the Batman Forever 4K I have but to me it’s not worth rebuying everything on 4K if I have the blu ray already, but for this release I might just get it.
Wow. Atmos and some TrueHDs knock me on my ass. My Fair Lady had a great TrueHD 7.1 that almost puts The Matrix to shame. Then again, DTS always used to kick DD’s ass back in the DVD days, so this is something I have to look into.

I finally picked up a 4K player and lord of the rings in 4K. I’m wanting to get the most out of everything and want to utilize Dolby atmos. Do you have any suggestions for speakers or sound system?

1. Is the Paramount logo at the beginning, or are we still stuck with the WB logo? 2. There’s a lot of people mentioning cropped AR and missing special features. Any word on if this is true, or was this just another snafu in the quality control department like Blade Runner was?
1. The 4K version does restore the Paramount logo at the beginning of the movie but the ending was stuck with the WB closing logo. My guess is this film didn’t originally have a closing logo. 2. The cropped aspect ratio on the 4K is actually the correct aspect ratio since the Blu-ray had a little more info on the left and bottom in different shots which wasn’t intended to be seen to the audience.
I really do hope the Burton film gets a 4K release, it would look stunning. It is certainly one of the more popular Burton films so I would imagine that a 4K release of that movie would certainly occur over something like Pee-Wee's Big Adventure or Mars Attacks or Dark Shadows. Especially with the forthcoming Wonka prequel, it would be wise of Warner Bros. to get the Burton film out on 4K as well (and then maybe it can do a 3-film 4K set or whatever).
Great movie classic. But tbh, I am very choosy on my 4K purchases now with their cost. And the Blu Ray is sufficient for me. It is not in my top 10 movies tbh. Maybe top 25.

If you got the special edition blue Ray that came in hard back book type of box , it actually had commentary with the kids. Definitely enjoyed it
That commentary was made for the first DVD release, and it simply has been reissued with each new release.

The 4K is actually the correct aspect ratio. The craziness is way overblown

It should be in 2.0 stereo right? I’m curious because I always try to choose the most authentic track.
The English track is 5.1 surround sound but some of the other languages are 2.0 stereo while some others are 1.0 mono

Films At Home..DTS HD is not as compressed as Dolby. That's why it sounds louder.

Not true. It just tends to be mixed louder. Turn the volume up a bit on the Dolby & you'll have the exact same dynamic range.

This movie was made for HDR. So many colors on screen!
Not to piss the community off, but y isn’t the Tim Burton version on 4K? Or any Tim Burton movie on 4K now that I think about it

I really do hope the Burton film gets a 4K release, it would look stunning. It is certainly one of the more popular Burton films so I would imagine that a 4K release of that movie would certainly occur over something like Pee-Wee's Big Adventure or Mars Attacks or Dark Shadows. Especially with the forthcoming Wonka prequel, it would be wise of Warner Bros. to get the Burton film out on 4K as well (and then maybe it can do a 3-film 4K set or whatever).

Great movie classic. But tbh, I am very choosy on my 4K purchases now with their cost. And the Blu Ray is sufficient for me. It is not in my top 10 movies tbh. Maybe top 25.
