Amazing video!! Thank you again for bringing attention to the challenge with your initial video. I had a blast working on this project and I've learned many things. It took about a week of work. At first, I thought this would be an extremely rare event. So my initial ambitious idea was to keep only the bare-bone logic of the dog race and run simulations in parallel on my GPU. I experimented with the recompilation project that came out around the same time, but I got overwhelmed quickly. So I went with the other, much slower idea that I had (Bizhawk simulations). I was happy and surprised that it only took three days to get a result. Sometimes, it's better to keep things simple. If anyone is interested, all the code that I wrote for this project is available on my github. Blue dog is an inspiration for us all.
@@Tsuki_the_canadian_otaku Not quite; like the video shows at 8:55, it's possible for a dog to both trigger the glitch (coming in 1st and making the jingle play) and then also cross the finish line first, meaning there are races where the glitch occurs, but doesn't alter the overall outcome of the race. Ace is referring to Blue Dog coming first, but another dog triggering the glitch (meaning it comes in second), while Serge is referring to Blue Dog both triggering the glitch and then also winning the race (meaning it comes in first).
I am curious whether there are differences between PAL and NTSC's handling of the race and whether it affects the number of possible outcomes of blue dog victories or the race ending glitch.
lock in would be an incorrect term, rather lock on. As seen by demonstrated dog stats, blue dog has the highest speed in the first few seconds (or if frames, then may as well last the whole race if using framedrop which I don't think workably exists in this game without skewing timeflow), while the rest of the race is it leeching off of some other dog's speed in it's rear, that it managed to lock on with itself.

yeah if it's a float it can represent a bigger range as floats precision is not linear like Intel but rather it fades meaning it can represent a wider range of values
No, Float32 is correct. The actual RNG numbers generated are numbers like +0.5 and -0.4, remember? They're float values, not int values. The reason the big number he displays is an integer value is because that big number isn't an actual value of the variable It's the result of counting how many possible numbers can be stored by a float32
Yea, this is a technicality since the sRandInt variable is a u32, but the Rand_CenteredFloat() function the dog code uses returns an f32. I chose not to dive into the nitty specifics here, so I oversimplified here.
We have witnessed a mathematical miracle. This video legitimately put a massive grin on my face seeing the literal underdog of Majora's Mask finally get a win. And not just with the glitch, but GLITCHLESS no less.
I had this same glitch one run off the GameCube edition of Majora's Mask. I was 14, and I was conditioned to believe that any time a game doesn't behave normally, it was broken and must not be played again (my parents were weird when it came to games). But what was it called when it was done from a disc? What was it called when such glitch was repeatable in my friend group? Then it clearly must not have been broken, right? Damn programming oversights making parents tell their kids that the game is broken and should never be played again...
A roller coaster of a video for sure! Things initially felt bittersweet when I thought it was only possible to win with a glitch, but then it all ended on the perfect note. Great job to everyone involved!
I know it's because it doesn't sound as good, but the first place was a few months ago, wasn't it? It has won for the first legit and recorded time in 24 years 25 does sound better than 24 tho, but it is kinda fitting, 24 hours in a day, in the game about making each hour count

The topic and information were discussed in precisely the amount of time they required. You can't find this precision and quality even in academic papers.
blue dog after seeing he has a 1 in quadrillion chance of winning ''so youre telling me theres a chance?"
It’s true what they say. *Puts on shades.*
“Every dog… has his day.”
YEEAAAHHHHH
*WOOOOOOOOOOOOO*
I have never played Majora's Mask. I have never heard of this channel, nor have I heard of the legend of the blue dog.
Despite this, I held my breath during that last clip - I knew it had to be a win, but the way this video was paced and cut together was so well done that I still felt every bit of suspense. You made me care about Blue Dog, and that's absolutely the sign of an incredible video. Great work on this, to both you and @falkush!
It was so funny learning years after the fact what had happened and how lucky it was. Nice vid Vid!
Funny thing, I saw you in the video, looked up your username, subbed to your channel, and then when I came back to the video, realized I was hovering directly over your comment already.
By the way, do you know where your profile picture came from? I tried reverse image searching but couldn’t find the original anywhere.
@@harmonicaman4782 At this point I no longer know. I've been using the same profile pic for 10+ years and cannot find it myself anymore. I just keep copies on multiple drives in case I need it for anything at this point. Sorry D:
@@Trevperson it’s alright! Just curious. I really liked the style but all I could find was Pinterest pins, with no mention of where it came from.
I'm unreasonably happy over that low poly dog winning a race. Blue is a good boy.
Not gonna lie. When I saw the only way he could win was with a glitch I was pretty disappointed. But words can’t describe how hype I was when blue dog won legitimately at the end. GREAT VIDEO!!
"""legitimately""". They did have to make sure the actual good dogs were having a terrible day.
@@bundasarts that's still legitimate lmao. The literal intended way to win the minigame is to find a dog having a good day and pick that one
me when a literal group of numbers in the shape of a blue dog wins
"I knew you could do it *Cries*"
Falkush better have waltzed up and slain Majora after all that so this timeline is the one that sticks without getting reset.
He probably has the save state. If you ask him, he may even give it to you
Hell yeah, the old saying, "every dog has his day", finally came true for Blue Dog. Love to see it.
Never have i been invested for a dog, in a race, in a game, i never played.
Not knowing or caring is most of my viewing experience
This felt like a bite sized, Summoning Salt video, I loved it.
I've had blue dog win before... when I was betting on gold without the mask of truth.
i had it win also without the mask seing that i only ever voted blue dog lol
I remember as a teenager playing the game and I had this glitch happen. I remember screaming at the TV wonder wtf just happened because my dog clearly won but I got second. I guess this explains it. Hope it was our good blue boy who got it.
blue dog was definitely pushing rng speed to max for that win, giving 110% the entire race
Didn’t even know about this part of MM, having never played it, and I still had a massive grin on my face when the blue pup won without glitches. Damn good work!
Neato. I loved when you started explaining how the dogs movement worked for the 2nd time. Such a nice and concise 5 minute video.
New viewer, shoutout the TH-cam algorithm for this one. Very comfy content. Super rare for me to come across glitches I’m completely unfamiliar with but then you and Falkush kept upping the ante till the legitimate win and had me hooked for 21 minutes! Subbed.
It almost feels like this can be a great analogy for life.
Even if you are a blue dog, you can still win the race
How to always win: define the finish line differently from the rest.
Thank you for bringing me the content I didn't know I wanted! Cute polygon dog is a plus. (:
every dog has his day
even if it occurs outside their natural lifespan
That's why all dogs go to heaven
The boy did it. He finally did it.
This makes me so unreasonably happy.
This was really endearing and cool how you guys ran enough simulations that the little guy would win the race. Your storytelling skills were really good, too! Blue dog fans represent!
Autists vs 1 in a Quadrillion odds: “Nah, I’d win”
in just 21 minutes I have been converted to a blue dog follower from not knowing anything about the game
BLUE DOG IS MY GOAT LET'S FUCKING GOOOO
Every dog has it's day, proud of you blue dog you finally took home the gold. Now you can retire in peace
Just reminds me of how minecrafters reversed engineers the world generation to find the seed of the original minecraft backdrop. Good work to all involved, had me rooting for blue dog
Never thought I'd end up being this invested in the blue dog's road to victory. This was a splendid final chapter in the blue dog's journey and I'm thrilled to see it end in a legitimate blue dog win.
9:36 maybe I'm being too hopeful but I feel like a blue dog is gonna win this particular race.
Fantastic video! I’ve actually forgotten about the blue dog and the race as a whole until I watched this video, it was amazing seeing blue dog win without glitches, which I also didn’t know existed, 11/10 video, keep up the good work!
This was a fun watch! It's fascinating to see how much goes on behind the scenes of little minigames like this, and I love the dedication to proving blue dog could win first place. Congratulations Blue Dog!
The one universe Dr. Strange saw. One where the blue dog not only won by only glitching, but maxing his optimality into a real DUB!!!
I guess every dog really does have his day
i truly hope this video keeps blowing up for you, was fun to watch
i always believed in u blue dog i knew u could do it
This is an emotional triumph. Thanks go out to Falkush for giving our blue boy the win he deserved.
I choose to believe that Blue Dog being the worst was a dig at Sonic. Open your heart to Blue Dog, who lived and learned enough to come in first at the end. I do not apologize for my horrible puns.
As a Sonic fan, I will accept this. Just got done watching the third movie and I feel emotional enough to root for a literal underdog like Blue Dog.
I always believed in you, blue dog.
Your name (blue wolf) is so fitting! 😄
This is incredible. Thank you Vidya James and Falkush! You proved that even in Majora's Mask, every dog has its day.
Blue Dog is like the Glass Joe of Majora's Mask. He pretty much always loses, but he treasures that 1 (glitchless) win on his record.
On the evening of August 25, 2024, the other dogs realized it was Blue Duke’s birthday.
This brought tears to my eyes
When I saw the timestamp I thought there’s no way I am going to watch a 21 min video about this. But it kept me glued 😅
Incredible work with this endeavor! This video was excellent and I'm so happy the community was able to brute force their way to a Blue Dog victory!
2:54 great run btw for anyone Interested in watching/ learning more about Majoras Mask. Very entertaining and educational with great commentary by the couch and host
nitpick; at 12:20 it seems like you meant to say that rng state is an int32, not a float32?
yeah if it's a float it can represent a bigger range as floats precision is not linear like Intel but rather it fades meaning it can represent a wider range of values
No, Float32 is correct. The actual RNG numbers generated are numbers like +0.5 and -0.4, remember? They're float values, not int values.
The reason the big number he displays is an integer value is because that big number isn't an actual value of the variable
It's the result of counting how many possible numbers can be stored by a float32
Yea, this is a technicality since the sRandInt variable is a u32, but the Rand_CenteredFloat() function the dog code uses returns an f32. I chose not to dive into the nitty specifics here, so I oversimplified here.
Great vid, seems like a well-deserved blow-up for your channel. looking forward to whatever you put out next!
So proud of the little guy 🥹, may he wear that 1st place med with pride and get extra good doggo treats
We have witnessed a mathematical miracle. This video legitimately put a massive grin on my face seeing the literal underdog of Majora's Mask finally get a win. And not just with the glitch, but GLITCHLESS no less.
Did a blue dog just make this grown ass man cry? Go blue Dog!!!!
Never in my life did i think i would get emotional for the blue dog winning a race
Holy shit I've gotten this glitch before but I had NO idea what was happening 😭 I wish I'd known so I could've really appreciated it when it happened
I am genuinely happy for this. Kudos to you and falkush.
19:21And the heffest got this run
A roller coaster of a video for sure! Things initially felt bittersweet when I thought it was only possible to win with a glitch, but then it all ended on the perfect note. Great job to everyone involved!
remember the part when blue dog said "maybe the true race, was the friends we made along the way"
Cringe
@@crazyfire9470 no shit sherlock
@@crazyfire9470 Maybe the true cringe was the replies we made along the way.
It's about time the algorithm blesses you! Awesome video!
I know it's because it doesn't sound as good, but the first place was a few months ago, wasn't it? It has won for the first legit and recorded time in 24 years
25 does sound better than 24 tho, but it is kinda fitting, 24 hours in a day, in the game about making each hour count
25 was just an approximation because I like multiples of 5, so I took a few liberties with "24 and a bit" and just rounded up lol
Great video! I never knew about Blue Dog but now it's one of my favorite LoZ MM characters. Blue Doooog~ 😭😭
I had no idea the blue dog was considered bad.
It would appear that indeed, every dog does have his day.
He truly is the best boy and he earned his retirment
this video was so good and well done!!! you're absolutely killing it dude!!!
15:35 He said the thing
19:27 He also says it here for those who missed it
