The one that I really want is a 4K restoration of the Directors Cut of Star Trek The Motion Picture. I’ve heard that it will be released to streaming next year and I hope that it makes it to physical disc release.

There were quite a few new CGI scenes created for the DVD. Because it was so many years ago, it was created on outdated software. So I can understand the time it takes to have to rebuild those scenes to render in 4K. I'm not sure if it gets an Atmos track (seems Paramount is content with 7.1 mixes with Star Trek). I thought they were pretty good when the first BD set came out: and they sound good up-mixed on DTS:Neural.

If you are really on a budget and you don’t own the movies and the TV series of the Original cast on blu-ray, I recommend the Anniversary blu-ray box set of Star Trek with the complete TV series, the movies 1-6 and the animated series. The art style of the box set is very cool, and you can find it super cheap ($50-$60) if you shop around.

My receiver isn't upgraded to 4K and Atmos or DTS X, so I can't give opinion on those. My TV is 4K with bleh HDR, so HDR is noticeable but not as good as better TV's have.

I'm very happy these came out and immediately per-ordered to show my support and send that message to Paramount. I genuinely didn't think we would see these on 4K and want them to know it's appreciated and we want more of Star Trek on 4K.
I have the 50th anniversary edition on display along with the die-cast models of the original Enterprise and TMP Enterprise. That stays put, but at least now I no longer need to disturb that and can just pop these in when I feel for a watch. It also includes the original TV series, but that is currently streaming on Netflix.
Interestingly, the Wrath of Khan in the 50th anniversary edition was remastered and looked far better than the other movies. Could be that they used that for this 4K version as well.

They have been working on the 4k STTMP Directors Cut for a while, I think some of that went into this STTMP 4k release. We will be seeing STTMP Directors Cut on Paramount Plus next year, hopefully we get a 4K disk soon after. 4K STTWOK was announced like 5 years ago but never released (WHY!?!?). This set includes that endeavor which I think is the most impressive of the collection. They fixed some of the special effects, for example when Captain Terrell shoots himself he was originally transparent before he vaporizes, they fixed that and it looks a lot better. Also, it seems that they cleaned up the matte painting composites in the Genisis Cave. It is now truly a beautiful film and I think STTWOK makes the price of this collection worth it all by itself.

Star Trek VI has never looked good on home video. I hope they remaster that in 4K. They can also remaster First Contact the original blu is lackluster. It isn't filmic at all. I do wonder what version of Star Trek VI we get though and will the matte be opened or will it be matted for widescreen like the film prints. There are 3 cuts of VI Theatrical, Special home video version which has never been in HD, and the directors cut which was on the 2 disc dvd set but never released on blu ray but exists in HD form. It was the only Star trek film shot in super 35.

They are bringing out the 6-movie 4K collection in September (with theatrical and directors cuts of The Motion Picture, Wrath of Kahn and Undiscovered Country). Literally a year after they released the 4-movie collection. I'm glad I waited and didn't buy the 4-movie set, but at the same time it does seem a bit greedy to not wait until the 6 films are fully remastered for 4K and expect some people to double dip that did buy the 4-movie collection. Although they are releasing individual 4K's (The Motion Picture Directors Cut is getting its own 4K separate from the Theatrical Cut) of all the film's as well as Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country for those that bought the 4-movie 4K collection and don't want to double dip when they own the first 4 on 4K. But again I understand why those who bought the 4-movie 4K collection would be annoyed.

PS. Weird Dolby True HD is lossless too, it's the container format for Dolby's Lossless Atmos format. Dolby Digital plus is the Lossy container for used for Atoms HD broadcast's and streaming.
Dolby True HD = DTS Master HD when the exact same audio is put into the format as both are lossless. Dolby have the advantage of having set reference levels so you will get consistent audio levels between disks. I prefer the DTS tracks on the whole because in the earlier days they helped with mixing and put a preferable audio mix into the audio container format leaving whatever audio Dolby format sounding not as good.

Just a thought but I would love if someday in the future if they make 4k disc the size of a game cube size disc less plastic. Or a cartridge in 4k like the wii switch again less plastic to save the environment but still give us a hardcopy for those who like having something in there hand. Love the video! Thanks for the review I was debating if I should ask for it for Xmas. Dolby TrueHD is lossless. If the source audio mix is the same, and audio levels matched, a TrueHD track sounds identical to DTS-MA. DTS-MA just became a dominate format for HD Blu-ray (the way TrueHD Atmos is on UHD disc or DD+ Atmos on streaming). I've watched all the movies. I believe Star Trek 4 has the weakest quality due to source: there is quite a bit more grain visible (probably due to film gate size/film stock used). Though I also noticed some weird interlaced artifacts in a couple scenes in motion picture. RE: HDR with film-a camera negative may have up to 13 stops (bits) of dynamic range (current digital cameras now are getting up to 16 stops). With 4K scans, they have scanned in a HDR color space for quite a few years (be it 10bit or 12bit space).
When it comes to the movies in the set, I've heard that Paramount decided to do these restorations in batches. Apparently they were burned by having too much stock of STNG seasons when people were waiting for a boxed set. These movies sound pretty good on my receiver, which I upconvert 5.1/7.1 to DTS:Neural. So the only upgrade I'm aware of is a separate remastering of STMP Director's Cut (the original had CGI rendered in SD: enough years have gone by, that they'd have to rebuild digital assets and render out in 4K). As a Star Trek fan, I bought the set to support Paramount in getting the other movies done.

I got the individual Blu-ray releases, and hope they continue on the individual releases for Blu-ray. For TMP Directors Edition, I suspect we'll get a 4k / Blu-ray combo, and that's the way I'll go there. I don't have a 4K setup, and will not have one for a while, so the Blu-ray releases generally work for me. For the DE, I'll get the 4K / Blu combo so I'll be future-proofed there, and I know that release will take advantage of Atmos and HDR.

Hello I'm new to your channel. Will you be doing a similar comparison between the Criterion version of Citizen Kane Blu ray & 4k? I believe this is their first 4k release.

Weird one - are your feet touching whatever the camera is supported on? When it wobbles back and forth it's pretty nauseating.
    Cheers for the vids

Despite the lack of sound mix improvements, if this had included the 4K Director's Cut, it would have been a buy for me. As it is, I'll wait for the DC next year, and hope for an upgraded sound mix on that one. The rest of the films, I'll just wait for a sale.

No one will ever see this with all the comments, but aside from the spectacular restoration, Paramount's presentation of this was a crime. Aside from the cheap cardboard sleeve, they had no seperate clamshell for each disc, not even graphics on the discs aside from title. No 5 and 6 (6 was amazing IMO). Also no part 1 Dir cut... And they couldn't even be bothered to make a decent menu. Just a static movie poster that doesn't even attempt to fill the screen. They called this in to get $$ from fans and the fans deserve better.

I think we all know the audio upgrade from Dolby true 7.1 or even 5.1 to Dolby Atmos or DTS-X is a significantly pricey one..So Paramount didn't touch the audio because of that ,but I can say from owning these that this is the best that these movies will ever look and sound!!

I bought the remastered blurays 4 yrs ago then they came out with another remastered bluray WoK . This is only if you want 4k then buy it but just keep your blurays.

I find the Star Trek remastered movies look the best on DVD, because the sharper the image (4K/Blu ray), the worse the old special effects appear.

Wait what? Why just four films? Why not have the entire original six-film saga restored for 4K?

  • @TheEasterFerret

I got the very first blurays and they were so bad I sold them and just held onto my dvds. They made them way too dark and blue, while the dvds had what I think to be a true tone. I'll probably pick this set up as an upgrade from BluRay, but I wish I could just buy the individual movies in 4k.

@@JeffRauseo Thanks! I was hoping this was a remastered set since it just came out in 2020, it also came with digital codes for all 10 movies. Guess I'll have to upgrade to the 4K set. I also wanted to say, Congratulations on the new baby, I hope the wife and little one are doing well.

I'd have got this, but it's not got the Director's Cut of ST:TMP. So, I'm not going to buy this, when the Director's Cut of that is coming out next year. I'll hold off until they release all the films in one box set - which they will.

Ha ha, I know what you mean, but I also enjoy 1 and 5. 5 is the worst by a good margin, 2-3-4 make a very good story arc, and 1 is like a blending of Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I've been waiting for this review for a while, and have been wondering if the remastered Blu-rays are worth it. Even though I've had them for a while, I've been thinking I would go sell it back, because I'm worried it was a waste.
