Fantasia not having a 4K release is actually insane. That is such a perfect candidate for the format and it still hasn’t been done.

Disney's been wanting to do a restoration for a long time, but they've been having problems securing a good enough print, and trying to secure a high enough quality transfer of its legendary theatrical sound mix. There is a 4K of Cinderella coming out soonish though, which should be interesting to see ESPECIALLY considering the transfer isn't on Dis+ yet

    • @JeffRauseo

      Agreed! Fantasia could be incredible.

Yeah I just hope that the sources aren't so old that they can't get a good scan of it. Also with the old cel animation being a bunch of plates laying on top of each other, there's going to be a decrease in quality.

Cell animation movies usually don’t see an improvement on 4K. I would love to be proven wrong with the Ghibli movies, as Spirited Away is in my top ten movies ever, but as you can see even Jeff didn’t have a single cell animation movie on his list here.

Into the Spider-verse is amazing. That Bill Sienkiewicz style Kingpin made my jaw drop first time I saw him. One of the most unique artists to ever create comics and they actually pulled off animating his style.

Not included is 'Early Man' (2018) and 'A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon' (2019), which are stop-motion movies released by Studio Canal UK on 4K disc in native 4K with HDR10 and Dolby Vision.
Nearly all of movies in this video have a 2K DI and no Dolby Vision. That doesn't mean they are bad and I still have nearly all of them but I don't see how they can make a top 10 list from the last 7 years of the format.
For somebody who doesn't appear to like Disney as a physical media company there sure are a lot of Disney titles here. What about the 'Heavy Metal' restoration released in native 4K Dolby Vision by Sony last year? If all a movie needs to get on this list is to be a good movie made from computer generated animation that is a 2K upscale and HDR10 then that is a pretty low bar, that is like a bare minimum for the format.

I have a question about animated movies! When they release a 4K version of the movie, did they have to go back and reanimate everything? Or it’s just a matter of exporting the movie in 4K (since I suppose that’s how they’d send it out there for the cinema release)? Because I know that for movies shot on film it’s a matter of rescanning the original film. But how does it work with animated movies? :o i genuinely don’t know.

Completely agree with your #1. Into The Spiderverse is freaking stunning.
You haaaave to watch! & review, ParaNorman! That would’ve my #2. Another on my list, is The Peanuts Movie. The details in that are astounding! Especially when you go into Snoopy’s Red Barron imagination.

3D Computer animation should never be in the same category as Cell or stop motion animation. Also, most of the Marvel movies these days are filmed using green screens, do they count as 3D animated movies?

Nice video. 👍 Animation is fantastic when it comes to 4K UltraHD Blu-ray, it's often what benefits the most from the format and its upgrades over its predecessors. The vast majority of my collection (4K and overall) is comprised of animation, and if I had to do a personal Top 10 animated 4K discs in picture quality to this date, from what I currently own, it would roughly be like this:
    #10: Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
    #9: The Lion King (1994)
    #8: Moana
    #7: Aladdin (1992)
#6: How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (the previous two are top-notch on the format too 🐉)
    #5: Space Adventure Cobra
    #4: Belle
#3: The Transformers: The Movie (1986)
#2: The Princess and The Frog
*#1: Robot Carnival* (The best looking disc I own to date, right up there with Top Gun: Maverick, I mean it. Give it a try! 😁)
I really hope to add soon to my collection the following: The Prince of Egypt ( *THERE CAN BE MIRACLES WHEN YOU BELIEVE* I'm so excited about this one, it's actually happening for real 😆), Coraline, ParaNorman, Kubo & The Two Strings, the Violet Evergarden Movie, Disney's 1950 Cinderella and the new Super Mario movie that's being released in cinemas in the upcoming months.
Other movies currently unannounced for the disc format that reside in my wishlist are The Road to El Dorado (and the other DreamWorks traditionally animated films), Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, The Iron Giant, A Goofy Movie (read below) Redline, the 2001 Anime Metropolis, Kung Fu Panda, pretty much everything that was made by Don Bluth (starting with The Secret of N.I.M.H. and Titan A.E.), and, in an ideal world, the entire GKIDS catalog, which includes the Studio Ghibli and Cartoon Saloon movies. Currently, GKIDS has released Belle (Number 4 in my picture quality list as typed above) and Weathering With You in North America, while Mary and the Witch's Flower is available in Japan with English subtitles.
It was difficult to build such a list with so many great releases in my ever-growing collection. I generally choose 2D traditional animation on 4K UltraHD Blu-ray over 3D CGI animation, as from what I have watched, contrary to public consensus, traditional animation, be it cel or digital, takes much more and better advantage of HDR and the format's capabilities than CGI, and more often than not traditionally animated movies tend to be better than modern CGI animated movies anyway. Have you guys looked at the new 4K HDR restoration for A Goofy Movie, out of all things? It's absolutely MIND-BLOWING! There are a couple of HDR videos right here on TH-cam by The Bigger Pictures Film Restoration, if you are willing to search them up. I too do not care at all what the source resolution is, it's a complete non-factor for me when deciding to buy a new disc if a movie is upscaled or native 4K. I do mind the absence of HDR a lot, however, as are the cases with the UK releases of Future Boy Conan and Millennium Actress, that really peeves me when they omit HDR encodes on 4K discs for generally non-descript reasons or poor excuses.
Anyway, do you want to really see what does a truly terrible animated 4K disc look like? I keep reading that the Japan exclusive *Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence* release did not come out in a watchable state at all, not in the slightest. You thought that the first Ghost in the Shell movie's 4K disc was a letdown? Well, the second movie's disc is bottom-of-the-barrel for the format in general, animated or otherwise. Even the caps-a-holic screenshots are merely enough to make one nauseous, just to think about how it would actually look in motion. 🤮
Anyway, have a good day, Jeff, and here's to 4K UltraHD Blu-ray and physical media altogether continuing having a long, prosper and fruitful run with many great movies and music to come. 📀💿

Well, 1 thing you forgot to mention about Coco is the fact that the 4K blu-ray is missing 1 feature. The Disney+ streamed version has Dolby Vision, while the 4K Blu-ray disc only has regular HDR. Not that I still wouldn't recommend it since the improved image quality and sound really put it a few notches above the streamed version, but it's a shame that this fantastic movie does not have a truly definitive 4K release that offers the best of all.

Hey Jeff, do you know for traditional cel animated films, do they just go back and scan the finished negative or do they scan the actual individual plates? Or do those plates even exist? I wonder because with the traditional animated films, they're all composited frames and they're just going to lose a lot of clarity and depth because of that.
