Parents bought it on vhs day one (one of my greatest memories as a kid watching it for the first time), got the special edition on dvd, got the blu-ray and today I got the 4k. I'm really excited even if it's not the most mind blowing of upgrades... it gives me the reason to watch this awesome movie again. ... and when it comes out on 8k/16k/1millionk I'll buy it again

I'm definitely hoping for a visual improvement on this, as I recently watched the 25th anniversary Blu-Ray with my son and it looked rough. It was kind of drab looking in the live action scenes, where you'd think it would look brighter and more colorful.
@@Dartanyoogles I noticed that with the Shout! Blu-ray of King Kong where you can see threw the different layers. It's probably just the improved clarity being able to show that.
@@Dartanyoogles Oh yeah, I'm watching it now and it's so much better looking. Even just the beginning scenes at Maroon Studios and in R.K.'s office are just so much better which the richness and vibrancy of the colors, even though it's not a huge palette of colors, mainly tans, and browns. But still, they just appear so much better balanced and accurate. The scene in the bar, where it's darker is still just as good. The HDR really helps.
I love that movie! That summer all I was doing was drawing a bunch of Roger Rabbits. I saw that movie 3 times in the theater. Might have to buy it later on.

I’m going to start campaigning again for a few more…. WE NEED HARD BOILED IN 4K from Criterion. Also, I’d accept The Super Mario Bros into my collection in crispy clean 4K. Say what you will about the movie, it was a huge part of my childhood. I was young enough to appreciate it!

Who framed roger rabbit is 1 of my top 5 movies of all time, I preordered the steel book 4K and its very well done a big jump from blu ray. The best way to see the difference is the scene where he's looking through the keyhole, on the bluray it looks very bright in the room, on the 4K the only light in the room is coming from the keyhole, sounds small but it changes the scene.

I wasn't even really interested in pre ordering the steel. It was up for several weeks and I just thought 28 might be a bit too much for me. I finally decided to go for it and it was sold out. I ended up getting lucky yesterday morning. I randomly checked the app in the and surprisingly the pre order was back up. It went through and right after, the pre order was gone. So that was either the only one or there was only a couple. Not sure how that works if someone cancelled or what but I'm thankful!

(Later) How weird, I just watched this movie yesterday. I'd say the 4K is probably about as good as it can be, but the blu-ray was plenty good already. Get 4K if you don't own it already, but if you do already have the blu-ray you're probably fine sticking with it.
Does it have deleted scenes, unedited scenes, like the lazer disc? You would think they would give the very best sound and picture quality and do it right especially for a film like this.
It's most definitely the censored version with less implied nudity/swearing. But it's good to own it on disc just in case it's seen as problematic one day. Haha
Preordered this one as i didn't own it in any disk form. Glad to see it looks great. Bummed on the atmos not being great but not surprised. More 4ks please Disney. Lots of Fox titles I still need.
I highly doubt Disney spent the money on scanning the original animation cells seperate from the 35 film negative, and then recomposited them in post. They most likely scanned a finished film print. its a shame, because the technology wasnt good enough back when it released, and the animation over live action had a transparency to them as a result. So scanning an already composited film reel, wont get rid of this old limitation.
The main groundbreaking work done for the movie was trying to have practical effects and actors react to animation that would be drawn in later. ILM, which was doing most of the VFX at the time, also did the optical compositing for the movie (ILM says over 10,000 ft of composites). It's very hard to archive all source material: studios have faced warehouse fires, budget cuts, etc: let alone trying to assemble that for a new digital composite. The main digital recompositing done for a whole series (that I can think of) is Star Trek The Next Generation. Everything was shot on film, but to have a fast turn over for broadcast TV, all the compositing had been done on analog video. So Paramount was very lucky to find all the original source material (and for it to have been filmed on film stock)...to then spend the resources to reproduce it on HD. Usually keeping and archiving a master is what gets done with a movie. Even with new film restorations in 4K or 8K....after all color timing and corrections, they'll also make a new film print for archiving. The artifacts from optical printing were often mitigated by using larger film stock (ILM used Vistavision for their VFX, but did say they were really pushing the limits in what could be done with film compositing in ROTJ). When discussing what limitations existed, there's another discussion about resolving power with different film formats and exposure techniques used.

Movies were intended for movie screens after-all. The rare exceptions requiring completely new VFX renders and composites are like the director's cut of Star Trek Motion Picture. They're probably having to completely recreate the 3D scenes since the software used on the DVD is out of date (and was rendered in SD).

Granted, sometimes the original sfx negatives can be lost over time. But if they're not, then this is the correct way to scan and archive the film.
Can you tell us if the Blu-Ray in the 4k set got the new transfer on the Roger Rabbit? I suggest when reviewing 4k releases of older movies to also check out if the new transfer is on the Blu-Ray disc and let us know as sometimes they'll crap out and put the old transfer on the included blu-ray disc like they did with Beetlejuice. As I buy 4k to watch the blu-ray disc now, and so will have a 4k library already built when I upgrade to 4k.

Is this exclusive to the US? I'm having a tough time trying to figure out how to get it up here in Canada. I know I'm Canadian, and they say I'm slow, eh, but I can't seem to find it on Amazon CA. I was so excited when I saw Who Framed Roger Rabbit was being released on 4K, but now I'm just profoundly disappointed at the extra hassle it looks like I'm gonna have to go through to get it.
Even Jeff's Amazon US link doesn't work right now. Probably because it's not officially out till the 7th and Disney & Amazon have been at loggerheads over pre-orders for years now, at least in the U.S.
I REALLY hope this means there is a chance for Mary Poppins 4K, because that is one of my top 5 favorite Disney movies and I think it would look beautiful with 4K and HDR! (I saw the screencaps for this 4K of Roger Rabbit, and from what I saw, it looked very good to me)
Could you also share how is the playback experience of this disc? When you insert the disc, does the movie start playing immediately, or are you forced to watch several unskippable clips about copyright, downloading, age restricting, FBI warning, trailers for other movies etc... how many minutes does it take before the movie starts playing?
I'd really like to know if there is an actual difference between this release and the actual 4k HDR Disney+ version released a year ago.If somebody has the answer on the comments it will be very cool!Thank you

I keep waiting and wondering why Disney is so allergic to Dolby Vision on disc. With that said, what are your thoughts between the disc HDR10 and the DV Disney+ presentation?
Also waiting patiently for a nice 4k Dick Tracy and Rocketeer. Those would look beautiful in 4k. Rocketeer especially needs a nice new transfer. Sometimes I do wish Disney would let some of these amazing independent studios do their catalog titles. Could you imagine an Arrow x Disney release or Criterion x Disney. Oh so amazing.

worth the upgrade imo. They are giving us the real 4k version not the half baked Disney 4k version.. I originally watched this on VHS on a tube tv when I was 5 yrs old lol.
I just got done watching this this evening. I remember seeing it at the cinema as a kid. Still love it. The uhd really highlights the softness of the compositing shots where animated characters physically interact with live the action cast. The audio is a let down but it just shows the age of the late 80's sound mix more than anything.

As soon as you said the animation really pops with the HDR I went straight to Amazon to order. HDR for me is where it’s at with 4K.
Yeah it looks awesome, but the inconsistency is tough. I’d say it’s 80% great.

When you insert the disc, does the movie start playing immediately, or are you forced to watch several unskippable clips about copyright, downloading, age restricting, FBI warning, trailers for other movies etc... how many minutes does it take before the movie starts playing?

Generally discs will always look better than streaming. A lot less compression and better specs.
@@adamsultana8380 yes i know that! A streaming file will do around 20 go when a uhd disc would be twice or three times bigger.What i d like to know if it is the same master

I keep waiting and wondering why Disney is so allergic to Dolby Vision on disc. With that said, what are your thoughts between the disc HDR10 and the DV Disney+ presentation?
Also waiting patiently for a nice 4k Dick Tracy and Rocketeer. Those would look beautiful in 4k. Rocketeer especially needs a nice new transfer. Sometimes I do wish Disney would let some of these amazing independent studios do their catalog titles. Could you imagine an Arrow x Disney release or Criterion x Disney. Oh so amazing.
I wish this had been out sooner so it would have been on sale for Black Friday. I really hope they give Nightmare Before Christmas a 4K release.
Puh, puh, pu-leeeeease Disney, give us more catalog movies in 4K like The Rock, Con Air, Pearl Harbor, Tombstone, Coyote Ugly, and Armageddon to name a few. In the mean time, I'll be getting WFRR to hold me over.
worth the upgrade imo. They are giving us the real 4k version not the half baked Disney 4k version.. I originally watched this on VHS on a tube tv when I was 5 yrs old lol.

I just got done watching this this evening. I remember seeing it at the cinema as a kid. Still love it.
The uhd really highlights the softness of the compositing shots where animated characters physically interact with live the action cast.
The audio is a let down but it just shows the age of the late 80's sound mix more than anything.
There are some videos where I am like "Is the baby sleeping? I think the baby is sleeping..." Haha, always appreciate the content!
Did they remove scenes to make it more "kid friendly?" I've heard rumors.
