Considering that I only had standard definition versions on DVD and Laserdisc before, this was worth the upgrade for the mono audio. I'm keeping the Criterion Laserdisc, but giving the DVD to a family friend.
Many of the scenes in Singin' In The Rain are long takes fading into the next scene, and when this happens, the image is soft due to the process transition. But when the scenes aren't fading into another, the clarity, textures and colors look great.
Ordered my copy from Amazon yesterday (I forgot to pre-order) and it came today. Slipcover, everything. I'll probably still keep my 60th Anniversary Blue Ray edition.

Another Technicolor movie that I think is worthy of a 4k disc is The African Queen. Have no idea if original negatives are preserved. A unique thing about African Queen is that it was filmed on location.....in Africa! Location filming in exotic locales was very unusual during that era of heavy equipment, technical challenges of the three strip Technicolor camera system.
The film is one of our favourites, so it was a no brainer to pick up this 4K edition. It looks fantastic, and as we're in the UK we got the collector's edition with a whole array of posters and other bits and bobs.

I've read numerous reviews of this and every single one (also noting the problems with the film as you did) thought the detail was a major upgrade over the Blu-ray (though some transitions are apparently soft). In any event, I got mine from Amazon today and will be watching it tonight so will see for myself. This is one of my favorite movies and the Singin' in the Rain scene is arguably the greatest scene in film.
I think to say “major” upgrade is an exaggeration. It’s great, but the Blu-ray was also a 4K scan. So this isn’t like taking an old scan from Blu-ray and totally rescanning to 4K. I think it looks great. But I’m also realistic and can’t say “Wow this is huge!!!” When it’s really not.
@@JeffRauseo Improvement in detail on 4K over 1080p is usually fairly small most of the time anyways - even with digitally shot movies. With that said, I thought the improvement in detail was noticeable and pleasant to look at. Judging by your wording it seems like you're a little misinformed. That whole 4K master thing for 1080p bluray is a gimmick. To put it in to perspective, My Fairly Lady 4K would have looked the same if it was scanned at 4K instead of 8K. Same master? Sure. That's why they look similar.

So Sad the first Negtive is gone far as we know. it uless they invent a ray that can restore gunpowderd or burned flim reels back togther like was just put in the can. I was thing in I love to see Camlot in 4k speaking of the late Richard Harris love a 4k of the man called horse trilogy in 4kudh hell litte big man too with Dustin.
Jeff, I wish you could move the mic a bit lower out of the way so that it's not blocking a part of your face. The sound should just be OK without having your mouth touching the mic 🙄
I would have to hear mono and the 5.1, but probably I will prefer the mono over the two. Sometimes a movie like that to 5.1 is too much and you can hear it. When I eventually got it I will test both.
People that want something more authentic to the original presentation. It's not much diffefent than how many people prefer the original fx for A New Hope over the added digital fx version, or how some people enjoy watching 80s films on vhs, since it's more immersively nostalgic to its era. Regardless of the reason(s), let people enjoy what they enjoy
There weren't multi tracks in 1951 for making movies so any 5.1 from this era will need electronic wizardry which can often be a step down from the original mono. It's like Elvis Presley music from the 50s which was recorded on one track, and "reprocessed for stereo" and sounds like utter crap.

I'm a sucker for Techincolor movies on 4K and this is one of the all-time classics. Will definitely pick it up to see that wonderful HDR

Older movies shot on film look amazing in 4K. It's modern movies shot in 1080p or 2K that aren't necessarily worth getting the 4K Blu Ray.
