After I was just about done shooting a few guys finally approached me cause they just had to ask me "What the hell are you shooting?" I said 45/70 and they just nodded their heads in agreement. "Letting my friend"... Obviously he isn't use to the weapon. If someone hands you a cannon and tells you it is gonna kick hard etc. I'd be very surprised if all you experts didn't flinch the first pull, I'd rather see a little jerk than barely holding it and have it fly around. You can also see he isn't too keen to shoot it repeatedly so again obviously he isn't going to have perfect form. The guy just wanted to give his friend a go with his gun, relax everyone. We can't all come out the gates our first time and score a 10.

    • @mohunter68
      @mohunter68 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought his rifle handling skills were on par, he always kept the barrel pointed down range and didn't drop the damn thing so that is a Big Plus in my book. He should have been shooting seated and off of a bag to be more safe, but when he was done he left the chamber open and gently laid the rifle on the bench. Good on him! 45/70 is a handful and it ain't for everybody, but I love mine.

    See him flinch on that 2nd shot ! Funny to hear comments on the recoil because I found it comfortable to shoot. More like a shotguns push than the cracking jolt of a 30/06 . Mine wore a 1-5 power Tasco mounted in their excellent bridge mount and rings. I later changed to a peep sight for scrub hunting and a 308 Rem 700 became my scoped firearm. It was early 80s and factory loads were very limp wristed ( so they didn't blow up the inferior Winchester models) so I handloaded 300grn Sierra's for about 2200ft/ sec and 400grn Hornadys for 1900ft/ sec (approx). The 300 hollow points poleaxed big boars and the 400 flat points had plenty of power to smash shoulders and reach vitals on water buffalo. The gun is still going shooting excellent factory ammo. In 1982 it cost me $310 aus because it had a small rub mark on the barrel from the display rack. Can't think of a better gun to take on soft skinned game.

Put a decent recoil pad on it, I can shoot it all day long, that's the only downside with Marlin they just have a cheap plastic recoil pad. With those hornady loads a 45/70’a recoil isn’t any more then a 30-06. Want kick? I shoot 430 and 500 grain Buffalo bore hardcast magnums out of my guide gun, those got a bit more zip lol

      That’s what I was thinking everyone’s acting like it was too much recoil even though these were pretty weak loads

      True for combat. For traditional offhand marksmanship (when nobody is shooting back) a high elbow creates a nice big shoulder pocket and promotes a natural head position.
