      Paul Reynolds can you legally own a lever gun in the UK?

    • @paulreynolds9003
      @paulreynolds9003 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Michael.
      Yes a lever action rifle no problem at all. In the uk you have to apply for a shotgun certificate which you can only shoot shotguns with. And for a rifle you have to apply for a firearms certificate which is harder to get. You have to have permission in writing saying you can shoot on that land and it has to be suitable for that purpose. It’s mostly to deter undesirable people for acquiring a gun. We can even have sound moderators for hunting rifles. But look at our knife crime in the uk very high in places mostly drug gangs . I wouldn’t like to think what it would be like if they had guns. But our police should be armed.

    i bought a 2001 Marlin 1895G a few years back from a pawn shop. the owner swore he took amazing care of it, cleaned it regularly and had just shot an elk with it the previous year. the lever took considerable effort to move and clearly hadn't ever been properly cleaned or lubed in probably ever, but i could feel how solid of a rifle it was. I still bought it hoping i wasn't being delusional, best rifle i have ever owned. All it needed was a solid cleaning and lubrication, even with a shitty previous owner the marlin still ran strong. It's too bad that their reputation and quality has apparently dropped so heavily.

    • @duster0066
      @duster0066 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I wouldn't worry about the quality to much if you can do your own polish jobs. I bought a Remlin 1894 in 2012. It was not great and in fact the trigger sliced my finger with in a few minutes of handling the gun. And yes that's not good and the internals were worst. But it did work and the fit and finish was ok. I deburred and polished it up, and it's a fine gun. I got one that worked during the worst period, and they are better now. I sure wouldn't buy one sight unseen, but will jump at the first 44mag I find for a nice price. I don't care when it was made.

      I just bought an 1895 SBL and stripped it down and cleaned it, given how polished everything in side was, it made me wonder what could be deburred, or polished in the thing and having tried the trigger what would be required there either. The action is also very smooth and from experience they usually just get smoother still with use. Almost seems like a way to charge you more for virtually nothing. As for all the cerakote etc. blued with wood, stainless with wood or the stainless with the grey laminate looks so much better than any of the "painted" guns and synthetic stocks to my tastes any way.

    Why would you have to get a $1,000 + rifle deburred or dehorned? For that price, I'd hope it was an amazing rifle out of the box! I guess $1,000 doesn't get you what it used to.

    • @fiveowaf454
      @fiveowaf454 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Michael Neely 34" is hardly an overall optimum length for smokeless powder in 45-70, may have been of greater ballistic value with slow burning black powder. While velocity is increased by barrel length to a point, I've seen data that suggests in 45-70 the increase is about 15fps per inch above about 18.5" of barrel length, therefore assuming the powder is burning slow enough to still be seeing benefit at 34" we might be talking about 233 fps, hardly worth worrying about in a rifle that is a close range, to 225 yd rifle in Guide Gun style. Most modern factory ammo is tested from a 24" barrel and the 18.5 inch barrels on these guns on average lose 6% from advertised velocity across all the loads that were in a test I read. With all respect to your rifle with that barrel length, what would be the chances of having that on you, or with you, in any situation out doors where you are carrying it for protection, or even hunting if much hiking was required? I have two Marlin lever action rifles of recent production and the quality is excellent, my question regarding the custom work would be, have stripped and cleaned them, what are they deburring for all that extra money? I cleaned my stainless 1895 SBL two days ago and the insides are as polished as the out side, incredible finish for a gun of it's price.

    I have a Marlin 1895 Cowboy action model in 45-70 6+1 18.5” octagonal barrel with Ballard rifling. It is a 2019 and when I first got it the lever action was rather stiff. But the way you are supposed to smooth out your lever action is by using it!! The more you use your levergun the more the parts will naturally marry each other and have a happy blending of metal parts which equals the final result: A smooth lever action!! All without risking trying to rush the process by sanding, filing ect... so everyone leave your new non custom Marlin levergun alone!! The more your lever action moves, the quicker it smoothes!!

I would be pissed if I bought one of these custom Marlins and it did not shoot well. I have 4 Marlins, really they should come in good shape from Remington. I have only had trouble with one, I bought it new, and it did not cycle well shortly after putting a box through it. I took it apart, and cleaned out a bunch of metal shavings, and it is good now.

      I haven't personally tested the max effective range of both, but the consensus seems to be about 100 yards for the .357, and around 200 yards for the .45-70. They can both obviously shoot farther than that, but that comes down to the shooter being able to calculate their shot accurately, which becomes much more difficult once you get out farther than that.

      Yes they do. If you were to check Marlin's website again and look at the rifles there is a small circular button that's on the right side of the receiver. It's higher up near the hammer. That's the safety.

    I wonder if Marlin has finally ironed out their quality control issues? Thats what happens when the company sells out and the new owner fires all the old world master craftsmen who knew,how to make the guns and replaces them with new CNC machines and younguns who know how to set up CNC machines,but don't have a clue about how to make a Marlin with old world craftsmanship and outstanding quality throughout, excellent fit & finish on both the metal and the woodwork, smooth cycling and excellent accuracy! I'm still holding off buying a new Marlin or 3 until I start seeing reviews attesting that new Marlins are now put together as well as old Marlins. I own a Golden 39A that I've shot hundreds of thousands of rounds thru, and an 1895 that I bought from a friend back in about 1999 or 2000, he bought it in AK.

    • @impactguns

      @@minerblue9641 yes, really. From the age of 12 thru 19 I put 500-1000 rounds a week thru that rifle sometimes more, sometimes less. And i've shot thousands upon thousands of rounds thru it nearly every year since. So at the low end of say 500 a wk for 7 yrs = 182,000 rounds, but some weeks I went thru an entire case of 5,000 rounds. So, yes, I can safely say I've put several hundred thousand rounds thru that rifle. And if you are skeptical, I really dont give a flying fuck. I also reloaded 12 ga with my old MEC 600 jr. and I'd typically burn thru 500 rounds of 12 ga every weekend as well, a lot more during dove season. As a kid I lived in the woods, I often hunted before school, after school, and sometimes during lunch hour at school we would snesk out and hunt ducks in a nearby pond.

      Four years ago I bought a Marlin 336 XLR/30-30 Win. with a 24 inch barrel and a 5 round magazine for $800.oo + tax. At a little gun shop in Elephant Butte, NM.
      I like to shoot reloads with Speer 130g Jacketed hollow point bullets in it. With only, and I say only one round in the magazine and one in the chamber. It has ballistics very close to the .300 Savage with that round. Or thinking about it another way its ballistics are better than the 7-30 Waters round.
      Only one round in the magazine because these hollow point bullets are pointed like spirepoint bullets. Causes every round in the magazine to explode during recoil if you load more than one bullet in the magazine. Because in the tubular magazine the pointed bullet tip is resting on the primer of the bullet in front of it.
