Henry X vs Marlin Dark in .45-70 Gov

  • While few of us ever thought we’d have a blacked-out lever-action hunting rifle on our wish list, here we are with not one, but two.
The Marlin Dark series was followed by the Henry X-Model, both American-made levers. Neither stands head-and-shoulders above the other, but the variance in features, calibers, and price may sway some buyers.
Here’s what you need to know before pulling the trigger on purchasing the Marlin Dark or Henry X Model.

It’s February of 2022 and the Henry X series is shipping. You may have to have your dealer order one or buy from Gunbroker if that’s your sort of thing. With Marlin, everything hinges on how quickly Ruger can get their Marlin rifles to market. I have no idea on how many rifles they took in receivership and how tooled up their assembly process is currently. Everyone I know who is a lever gun fan swears they will buy the first “RuMar” serial numbered lever gun in their town. Even if that means paying upwards of $1600+ . . .My dad bought a Marlin “All Weather Finish” in 45/70 about 10 years ago. He mounted a red dot scope on it and took one shot at a target at 25 yards. Unloaded and re-cased the gun and it hangs on a wall with other (lesser used) guns. He said “we don’t have anything around here that needs that much killin’”. Despite that experience he can’t wait for his chance to buy another Marlin in 45/70 . . just because Ruger is releasing and my dad has about one of every Ruger revolver ever produced.

The .45/70 is my all time favorite round. My first big bore rifle was a Navy Arms Rolling Block I purchased in 1972 while stationed in Alaska. My next .45/70 was a H&R Trapdoor Cavalry Carbine I picked up in 1973 while home on leave. My favorite rifle was the Marlin 1895 I bought from a friend from South Carolina. My load for that one is Elmer Keith's load of 3931 powder behind a 405 JSP. It kills on one end and cripples on the other.

Excellent meat and potatoes video of one of my oldest used and favored rounds, the 45-70. To "date" my long relationship with the 45-70 and the heirloom rifle that was chambered for it, is displayed in restored condition in the family room, is the Model 1886 Winchester. Grandad, willed the rifle to my father and it was one of the first long guns that he schooled me with, as he shared his life lessons of the manual of arms. That Winchester was used well and well traveled in its 100+ years with my family's ancestors, all Army veterans, serving from the Horse Cavalry of the late years of the Indian Wars to the AEF-2nd Div of WW1, from 1st Cav of WWII-Pacific to 1st Cav Airmobile of Vietnam.
Post WW1, Grandad hunted game to feed his family and protect them in the Depression years, Dad learned to do both as the second oldest born. It was his personal firearm and backup to his Army issue in WWII-Pacific, the 45-70 ammo was still available, in use then and inventory for use today(!). When Dad's former Southeast Asia troopers come calling to pay homage to their old Sarge, my Dad, it is with reverence and some wry soldier humor that the Winchester is reminisced. At the Pleiku fire-base the newer 45-70-500 mil-spec ammo took its toll of many night time infiltrators, by Dad's 6th AMTU expertise with iron sights, the close-quarter devastation was unforgettable to the enemy. The former troopers nicknamed the Winchester: The Duke's Thunderstick...

Two very exceptional lever actions. I have several Marlins that I love, and I got my girlfriend one of the Henry X model 410 shotguns for home defense, and man that is a sweet little lever action shotgun. Thinking about getting myself one of the new Henry side gate big boys.

Even though you had a fastball in your pocket as far as " episode popularity " goes with this model rifle....you,...once again , have delivered an outstanding presentation. The previous video had me immediately doing some price checking. ..And good news, if you can find the Henry at Dunham sports in Michigan, it currently has a price " to low for me to post here". ha ha ha

Hi, I really enjoy your videos. Your straight forward style is certainly refreshing. I bought a Marlin Dark in .444 Marlin in October 2020. It is one of my favorite guns. I have to say I paid about $1800 for it though and I've seen the more popular 45-70 go for as much as $3300 on GB. I don't quite understand why the 45-70 is more popular since, ballistically the .444 had a slight advantage. Rounds are expensive and sometimes hard to find though. Thanks for the great videos and please keep them coming.

Love me some 45-70 and I love it in a lever action. Own Henry, Marlin, Rossi and H&R. Want them all in the “Black” models now. 👍🏼❤️🇺🇸🤠

After Henry added the side loader, they made the choice tough, but I will go with Marlin yet I don’t mind buying the Henry if I couldn’t find the marlin

The Marlin to me looks a little too beefy, and almost like a shotgun. The Henry looks like a proper lever action rifle, but updated with the black butt and grip and the picatinny rails. I'm liking Henry for looks alone and assuming they're both good performers... which I'm sure they are.

I have the Henry X in 357 and 45 Colt, 45 70 is on my list. Using Buffalo Bore deer grenades or Hornady lever evolution, the 45 is my favorite straight wall hunting rifle I've ever owned. Hands down.

I got lucky and found a Henry X 45-70 on the rack at Palmetto State Armory last April before things got really crazy. I mounted a Vortex 2-7x32 scope and Ranger Point Precision muzzle break. I’ve hunted all season with my 45-70 and have taken 2 bucks & 1 doe with it. I am really enjoying this rifle.

Great review and shooting Kristen. I’m in the market for a 45/70 for bear hunting from a stand. Been using a 3006 which gets the job done but I want more thump and something shorter and easier to manage in a tree stand. I think the marlin with a 1-4 power red dot reticle wood be killer.
