  • In this video, I compare the 444 Marlin vs. 45-70 Govt to see once and for all who the winner is. Covey makes a guest appearance and longs to chase birds while I compare these cartridges.

    Who is Ron Spomer
    For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

      Well he was talking lever action rounds if he would of talked the difference between the 12,16,20 gauge for upland bird hunt then I'm guessing the dog would be putting the shotguns in the gun cases and bringing them out to the truck to hit the fields.

    My uncle had a dog like that named Snipe (a dignified animal with human intelligence). Back in those days dogs weren’t chained or fenced. Every day around 11:15, Snipe would make the walk from his house, to our house where he would sit on the back porch.
    A little treat, say hello observe the goings on. When we sat down to lunch back home he would go. Never deviate from his course or his time. People still talk about that dog.

    I've hunted with both in single shot Handi-Rifles. Both are amazing deer rifles for here in Arkansas.

      I am in your neck of the woods. While I haven't hunted with the 45-70. I have a fair amount of experience and success with the triple 4. Using Marshal of Beartooth Bullets 444 Marlin load data, in a Marlin 336 . There is nothing on the continent safe from that combination lol

  • @shanehebert396
    @shanehebert396 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    A while back, some southern states started allowing .444M and .45-70 single shot, exposed hammer, breech loading rifles for "primitive weapons" season for deer. They've since relaxed it a bit to be any .35cal or larger cartridge in a single shot, exposed hammer, breech loading rifle. That was a big reason for the uptick in .444M, .45-70, and .35 Whelen. Since they slow walked the regulations down to .35cal, some folks just stuck with the .444M or .45-70 they already had. My uncle hunts with a .444M and he loves it... even using it during regular season, now, most of the time. His is very accurate with the 265gr LEVERevolutions that you showed in your video and he has taken deer with it at 200yds without hesitation.

    Thanks for another informative video! I appreciate your hard work and your KNOWLEDGE. I am a big fan of the 45-70. I have read hunting articles of the 45-70 handling Cape Buffalo using Buffalo Bore Ammunition. It is not a long range cartridge , however, within 150 yards it will handle all big game . If I were in Grizzly country, it would be my long rifle of choice. God bless!

    I like some .45/70 and other big bore cartridges. I've taken a bunch of deer with my .45/70 single shot running the 300 grain bullet at 2000 FPS average in my hand loads. Mild, easy to shoot loads that put a hammering on deer. Great video

    Thanks Ron and Covey. I have a single shot H&R Handy Rifle in the Rem 444 and then I have my new Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in 45-70. I enjoy both. It is just a little harder to find the 444 ammo on the shelves locally. I just harvest a boar hog the other evening with the 45-70. It fell where it was standing when I pulled the trigger. That big 45 really did the job. Again, thanks for sharing the information on these two cartridges.

    • @nokoolaid
      @nokoolaid ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Handloading is a good idea with the 444 for a couple reasons. One, more performance. Like a lot of factory loads, they underperform stated velocities. The other is economy and also tailoring for accuracy too. Cases usually last 20-25 loadings. It's a shame Hornady discontinued the 265g FP. It worked very well.

    Love both, I'd add in the .375 Winchester and the .405 Win. The versatility of the .45/70 is you can load down to cowboy action loads and go all the way up to Buffalo Bore or Garretts or anything in between. That was the problem I saw with the .450 Marlin is that your stuck at a .45/70 hot load ballistics unless you re-load. Long live lever guns

    The flatter trajectory of the .444 Marlin is what makes it my choice over the 45-70

    I have both the 45/70 and .444 Marlin. Marlin lever actions. I hunt mature bucks in Missouri. 100 yds and under are my shots. My favorite is the .444. It kicks harder but darn, does it do a number on deer. I use the Hornady 265 gr. Leverlution ammo.

    Own a 1895 myself hadn't hunted with it since 2017, not sure why. So anyway a lady I know wanted some deer meat this year and on the last day I went and about 10 in the morning 8-9 doe's showed up, well I ran that lever like I'd been doing it my whole life, it was natural it was fast and effective and I really surprised myself how I dropped one at 140 and another 110 and one at 90+ and they we're all spread out probably 80 to 100 yard's between all of them. All I can say is if you don't own one get one , theirs just something special about an 1895. One day if I'm lucky I'll beach hunt Kodiak island, hopefully I'll run it flawless that day too😳

    I have 2 of those!
    I have a lever action in .44 mag and have shot the ballistic tips from Hornady. Kicks pretty good and very accurate to 100 yards. Wouldn't ever take it further.
    I have a falling block in .45-70 that I have also fired the Hornady ballistic tips from and it's a bruiser! My shoulder was sore the next day from shooting that one! It has an old pop up peep site and is very accurate to 100 yards as well. Unfortunately, without a scope I can't see much further with my vision limitations.
    Love shooting both!

I’m glad I picked your video to see how my Marlin .444 added up to the 45/70 , because all I see is 45/70’s yesterday when I went to CCA , my Gunshop to pick up a 50 state legal Fight Lite stock n lower receiver asy. N the other guy just bought the m- lock style Marlin lever action in 45/70 !!! I thank you for making me continue to Love my Marlin.444 , it’s old but 99% perfect 💥💥💥💥🔫 Thanks from Commy Ct. 🇺🇸

    I'm a 44 mag Man and a 30/30 Fan .
    With all this new straight wall cartridge laws for hunting.
    The New 360 Hammer looks very promising for a 200 yard hunting cartridge.
    And HRA has already built a Lever action side gate Rifle for this Cartridge !
