    • @danieldougan269
      @danieldougan269 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@chekyourhed I would not consider the FX6 to be a consumer camera. It's a professional cinema camera. The FX9 can do all this and more with a larger form factor and broadcast codecs.
      Hollywood typically relies on ARRI Alexa cameras because they're the standard. The industry knows how these cameras work and how the footage grades, inside and out. And merely being the industry standard counts for a lot because of sharing files, training, and lighting. It's what they're accustomed to using throughout the industry. ARRI and RED cameras have amazing dynamic range and color science, which is how they became industry standards. Sony's own Venice camera is starting to get more use in movies as well.
      With that said, the gap has closed quite a bit. You can get amazing, cinematic footage from even the a7 IV. The Panasonic S1H is actually Netflix-approved as a primary video camera even though it's a "consumer camera" that takes stills. And, of course, the cinema cameras from Canon, Sony (except the FX3), and Panasonic are as well.
      Indy Mogul did a video comparing the a7S III with an Alexa and a Sony Venice. There were minor differences, but if you weren't comparing them side-by-side, you would never notice.

    • @WestonNey
      @WestonNey ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The dynamic range, color science and workflow of RED and Arri cameras are far superior for the work I do. Also I don’t care if the camera has auto focus, a first AC is far superior. However I work on commercials for multi billion dollar clients, so there’s a higher caliber expected on these shoots. Most independent filmmakers and TH-camrs will do just fine with cameras like the Sony and Canon.

    • @pilsplease7561
      @pilsplease7561 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WestonNey I respect that, but a lot of pros are still using these cameras in the same places that you are using the Reds or the Arris, for me cameras like the c70 or fx6 are great due to size portability and they have 90% of what the reds and arris have and i can get them for a better price and get more accessories and etc because I have money left to do so.

    • @danieldougan269
      @danieldougan269 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chekyourhed No one is saying Hollywood should switch to the Sony FX6 or anything similar for the next big-budget feature film. We're starting see the Sony Venice creep into a few TV / streaming productions.
      However, where these cameras and even good hybrids like the a7S III can fit in nicely is for independent films, corporate video, documentaries, and advertising...those mid-level productions.

    Hi,
    Thank you for your video !
    I’m a hybrid shooter too, a professional photographer and videographer...
    Here is my current setup. I have the R5 and 1Dx II. I want to keep my R5 mainly for photos plus maybe an R6 as a second body. And I want to add a camera that I will only use for video, and don’t really know what to pick between A7s III and FX6...
    The built in ND filter is very tempting...
    Question, can you buy the XLR-K3M without there mic ?

  • @csmvideoproductions7359
    @csmvideoproductions7359 ปีที่แล้ว

    You have to purchase based on your niche. If your niche is run and gun/wedding video, vlog or travel video, works well on a gimbal and does not require professional audio, then the A7SIII is your best bet. However, if your niche is corporate video (like mine) where the audio is paramount, and you need the best audio available. For corporate work professional XLR audio is a must. In this case the FX-6 or the FX-3 is the best option for my type of work. 95 percent of what I shoot is on a tripod and any B-Roll is captured on my FX-3 on the gimbal.

  • @PWingert1966

    Sarah Dietch just did a good video on using the FX6 in a Multicom setup and how it speeds up her workflow and makes color correction consistent and easier since she is only working from one type of camera. She is talking about a Multicam setup from the perspective of a professional TH-camr rather than a professional filmmaker. There is a great deal of overlap, but her environment is a much smaller set with just a single camera operator. Coordinating a larger team with multiple sets and a larger landscape-type environment might be different. The differences are more workflow than camera technical I suspect.

    You also get something on the FX6 that the A7S III doesn't have which is 4K DCI and true 24p. Not to mention timecode port and a full size HDMI and SDI port. And the amount of time you save by not having to ever change ND's when you change lenses is insurmountable.

    I went with the A7sIII with the Sony GM 12-24mm, GM 24-70,, and GM135mm over the FX6. I usually use my Mix-Pre 6II for audio so I didn't miss that, and I am use to using Matte Boxes so it wasn't that big of a jump. And, here is the most important part. I am waiting for the Sony A9III announcement on January 11th from 5:00pm - 5:30pm at CES. If those rumors about it are true then I feel it will be a better match with the A7sIII as the B camera.

    You'r absolut right with the impression a bigger cam will make to clients. But therefore i do have a DVX200 with a big 4K sign on its cover😜 And to make some "additional" shots, i do have this little GH5s beside.
    Clients will not recognize, that is shoot most of the footage with my GH5s that beside, make 12bit raw 50p in 4k. So it makes nearly the same quality like a fx6. And for interview where i need the XLR i do have the DVX200.
    So why should i change to a FX6? Just for having both in one camera? The only reason for me, would be a 8k resolution. So i could shoot 8k to get out 4k, exact the way i shoot 4k now, to get out 1080p. But that will deliver none of them all. So if i switch next year, it will probably be a Ursa 12K

    Where this camera fits? In shooting video. I worked years with the FS100 and still use them. I work with the A7III since its released. Everytime I'm shooting with the alpha I hear things like "Oh, so we just shoot photos?" "what? This is a video camera?" - it's useful in some situations to not get recognized, but at some shoots (especially higher paid productions) its just strange. At one web-commercial I rigged up my FS-100 for the BTS photos just because its bigger and looks more professional. The client reacted like i expected: "oh wow, what a big camera! it must be good production" So size does matter. And thats why I would prefer the FX6 on "Bigger sets" and the Alpha-series for run and gun, multi-camera things.

    OMG, your comment on someone coming from out of nowhere when you have a "Professional Looking Camera" is dead on. No matter where I go someone always catches me and asks if I have a permit or if I am TMZ.

    Nice video but one thing regarding the no 3.5mm jack on fx6, you can easily buy a xlr to 3.5mm converter for about £5-£10 pounds …problem solved

    Will you use a Cine Lens with the FX6? If so, which one?

  • @danieldougan269

    Someone needs to make a mirrorless camera with built-in NDs, and ideally this automatic ND. Yes, it would be a little bulkier. But it would be worth the tradeoff for a lot of people.
    The BMPCC 6K Pro is sort of like what I'm picturing, but it doesn't have IBIS or much in the way of autofocus...so it isn't useful as a photo camera. I want it all!
    Also, hats off to Sony for adding S-Cinetone to the a7S III and even the a7 IV.

    Thanks for the review. my school is hooking us up with the fx6 i really would of loved a fx3 or 2 of them, but the advantage the fx6 has its just listed under netflix as a camera we can use for their quality of service. as Awesome as the s3 is, its missing something or if not why doesn't video services list it as useable? I might trade my fx6 for 2 fx3s if i can. hehe. Thanks for the video.

    Who in the world would steal Chris Hau’s camera!?!? Blasphemy!!!!
    I’m in a spot where my company will be buying the FX6 for me to make content for them!
    They are building things around what I can do for them. Needless say, thank you Chris for inspiring me about 3 years ago now and starting my content journey!!

    the image from the sony fx6,
    - looks more contrasty,
    -doesn't have the green tint that the a7siii has
    - looks more natural to me

  • @ScottSalvi

    Thanks Chris. I wanted an FX6, but couldn't justify the price since I shoot photos as well. I ended up with the A7IV with the 18-35mm F4 PZ G lens as well as the 24-105 f4 OSS G. I built it out with a quick disconnect rig for videography. Been very happy with my decision so far. Why didn't you consider this camera with the A7SIII?

  • @StephenMcFadden

    The Sony NX80 also has XLR inputs, built in ND filters, 10 different picture profiles, 4K 30p at under $2000. The only downfall is that it has a 1 inch sensor but it still delivers an incredible looking Sony image. Traditional video cameras aren't completely dead. I feel like most people fall into this category but are afraid because the ergonomics looks dated.

    the only difference between the FS5M2 and the FX6 is the sensor's. Also the FS5M2 have the XLR input on the body which I like.
    still want the FX6 for the upgrade sensors and autofocus.

    You just sold the idea of the FX6 with that auto ND feature, it would be incredible for property work! But I also want the A7siii for the size... man, who knows - maybe one day we'll get an A7s iV with in built ND's

    You can also just leave it at the regular base iso and use an external monitor and bring it up in post. Same difference.
