FX9 vs FX6 - Why would you downgrade?

  • Sony have produced some great cameras recently, almost too many!
However, their marketing has left a lot of professionals feeling a little neglected, especially when upgrades disappear. For some, it feels like downgrading is a better option!

Love the pace of your thoughtful content - and no jump cuts either! I’ve always had ‘proper’ cameras going back to tube Betacam days. I sold my FS7 MK11 for the A7S MK111 and A74 and I could not be happier. Don’t need timecode, use the XLR adaptor when necessary and a good VND does the job too. I find the ergonomics of a mirrorless camera superior to a large shoulder camera once you have it rigged to taste. The size and weight advantages for a mostly solo shooter mean being faster and more creative - better output which is what it’s all about I think. No client has ever questioned my little cameras. I think those days are over.

Firstly I’m flattered you included my comments! As to the Burano, it😂 has near global shutter .. no it’s not true global shutter but it’s very good. Personally I’ve kept my FX9 and also have an FX6. Personally I still prefer it a lot of the time over the six. Using the 6 on doc as self shooter especially for run and gun for me was quite challenging, especially audio. And I still prefer the option of S35 shooting 4K as there’s some awesome S35 Glass out there.
Not sold on the Burano yet, to many unknowns at the moment.

FX9 owner here. I love the dual base ISO of 800 and 4,000 on my FX9s. Shooting at 4,000 with fast glass means I'm never struggling to expose anything I'm filming. I know the FX6 cleans up better at 12,800, but it couldn't possibly be cleaner at the more functional 4,000, yes? I shoot a lot of B-Roll in 5K scan 60p on the FX9s. The assorted sensor scans while still delivering 4K is an underrated feature of the FX9s. When I've got them on tripods, have lighting and audio built out around me, and I need to switch up framing a bit, it's so nice to be able to go from 6k to 5k or S35 scans without switching lenses or moving everything around.
Feeling abused and neglected is a part time hobby of camera owners, I think. Why doesn't this camera manufacturer love me and my investments anymore? haha Our only reasonable course of action is to put our cameras to work immediately. Neglect doesn't hurt so bad if the camera as is has made us a good deal of money.
I love your videos, by the way. Always thoughtful and funny.

I went from FS7 to FX9 last year. Now, 1 year later I would say that I could have kept my FS7. While FX9 has amazing autofocus, and the image is gorgeous, it has so many flaws like:
    - No full frame 60p S&Q mode.
    - When you change crop modes the camera forgets what framerate you had in S&Q mode (this suck so hard)
    - FX9 is bigger, heavier, and bulkier.
    - FX9 eats 50% more power than FS7.
    - No autofocus in slow motion (S&Q mode). This is a big flaw!
So I got myself a full frame camera that I rarely use in FF because of no quick slow motion option.

Your original video on the FX9 got me pretty hyped for that camera. Working full time for a broadcaster and doing an additional 4-5 projects a year I wanted to have a professional camera with this internal ND, autofocus and raw capabilities. As I was saving Sony dropped the FX6 it looked to be better every way outside of the eyepiece and interlaced. I was one of the lucky few here that got the FX6, the camera has been all over Canada, the little thing is a beast. Your video on creating an S-Cine profile on A73 helped me with a matching B-cam until I was able to add an A74 to my gear list.

I love my FX9. To say it's a workhorse is an understatement. Image quality is negligible between the three cameras but the ergonomics and usability of a full sized camera like the FX9 is very important for me. It also integrates nicely into the lives of Grips, AC's and Sound people making shoots just that bit smoother.

That's good to hear... I still think it was a game changing concept for full frame (especially that Variable ND) and I still love it. Part of my problem is the amount of work I now get without Grips, Assistants or even sometimes sound. It's been increasing over the last few years. 🙁

Just stumbled upon your channel. The Burano would fit well for the variety of projects I do from corp/commercial to independent film. But the price is steep. So I adapted a wait & see approach here in my market. If it takes off, I'll do it. BUT I'm not opposed to buying a used FS7 on Ebay for corp/Commercial work and a Blackmagic Pyxis for Indie films. Heck, the FS7 still works on jobs and I'll save a tone of money!

Ahh, the thinking mans choice! Obviously it depends on what clients you've got, but I totally agree with you. The FS7 is still a 4K version of the F5, and it's going for a song right now. I love the Blackmagic look if you're wanting a more cinematic feel, so it would be a really cost effective combo. If only Blackmagic could support 'E' Mount. !!! I have a feeling that if Sony had called the Burano the FX9ii (and knocked 10k off the price) we wouldn't be having these conversations. It would be flying off the shelves! Take care.

Had Sony included an open gate feature in the Burano, I would have preordered, but from what I heard out of the announcement interviews, it is strictly a horizontal design. Open gate has become for me a minimum standard for future camera purchases now that I’ve gotten used to the framing flexibility. You never know now when a client will ask for a “vertical”, and pulling that aspect ratio out of a 3:2 allows for a better composed 9:16 crop. By that measure, I’m curious to see what Sony does with the FX9/6. Day to day global shutter matters less to me than having the extra sensor real estate to work with whether shooting spherical or anamorphic.

    • @extrashot

Hi. Thanks for Your thoughts! So interesting to see this as I just sold my FX9. I still own two FX6 and I was hesitating to do that step for a long time as there are certainly some advantages of the FX9 over the Fx6 that I did not want to miss. Mostly all already mentioned in the comments and in your video. But some of the shortcomings of the FX9 over the Fx6 always annoyed me. Mostly no proper 50p without cropping to 5K scan mode. I was afraid that I would miss the second base of 4000 a lot, As I was often switching between the two base ISO to achieve my desired F stop. And I have to admit that daily work, I do miss this feature when delivering log footage, as fx6 12800 is of course noisier than fx9 at 4000 iso. But there’s one great thing with the Fx6 that I was not aware of When burning in LUTs, the method that I use a lot, the new flexible EI mode of the FX 6 is so great. Once the noise of the low base becomes worse than the noise of the high base, it automatically switches to the high base. Then you are able to shoot in the range between. 3200 and 12800 iso while burning in the LUT And the noise will be pushed down into the black, at least in the lower values. I know that the dynamic range shifts as well in most scenarios. This doesn’t matter too much as I would most probably not use this method in bright daylight. I am very curious what the future will bring regarding Sony‘s camera models, But at the moment the Fx6 is the better choice over the FX9 to me. Greez tp all the colleagues out there - happy shooting. Matthias

Hi Matthias, I totally agree with what you say about the base ISO's. Hi base on the FX6 is quite noisy compared to hi base on the FX9. I'll only use it with s-log in an emergency! Not so bad in custom mode because the noise is disguised in the blacks! Happy shooting to you too... take care.

As a wedding filmmaker, and photographer, I currently shoot with the Komodo X, FX3 & A1. That A9 III would be the perfect fourth camera to my set up.
A1 & A9 III for wedding photos, and all four for wedding cinema’. I've worked with the FX9 a couple of times, but prefer the FX6 with better autofocus any day. Of course shoulder work is better done with the FX9, but that's rarely the case anymore. Rather have a decent gimbal or tripod. And for image quality, I don't think the A7IV is a bad choice either. Tat's currently my most used cam. With a good cage and XLR-K2 adapter I can you use it on many jobs. Handheld and gimbal work most of the time. It can also easily be a B-cam for FX6/9 as the quality holds up. I wonder if a FX6 MKII is on it's way with a better viewfinder, better AF and possibly a global shutter. But maybe that would be killing all the burano sales.

We did the same thing. I started with the FX9. Was fortunate enough to get one before the actual release date because the company I worked for had a contact at Sony. After leaving the company I bought my own, since I knew it inside and out. Within months they announced the FX6 and I ended up selling the 9. I’ve since shot on quite a few productions literally side by side with the 6 and 9. You can’t tell which camera is which, and I’d argue that the tweaks made to S-cinetone on the FX6 gives it more pleasing skin tones than the 9. Ergonomically the 9 is better when rigging it with large lenses like the Canon 17-120, but it’s very heavy and never balances well on the shoulder. The 6 is so much lighter and just way easier to travel with. I can build it up in a couple of minutes out of a case and it’s ready to shoot. It’s also way less power hungry, so a couple of large BPU batteries will last me all day.

The A9 is short on dynamic range so this time the Burano buyers do not have to fear to buy an allready outdated camera. Maybe they have to fear the next fx9?!
The FX9 sensor is based on the A7R sensor family. Sony "cine line division" thought they can maximize the dynamic range. But they failed. While the Alpha line division worked hard on the stacked sensor family and was able to lift the dynamic range to the other sensor families. Long story short: At the end the FX6 is in most cases the better camera. But Im sure, the original plan was to have a fast FX6 with lower DR and a slower FX9 with significant higher DR. Fun fact: The cine line division was closed shortly after this fail and merged with the Alpha division. Just the cine alta division is an more or less "independent" division now.

I think Sony shifting gears so quickly took the market by surpise and the userbase, when they jumped on 10-bit 4:2:2 and raw over HDMI, and now have stomped on the 1DX userbase or whats left of it with a global shutter body you can fit in a pocket, they have been hitting every segment of the market, burano also filled out the gap between the FX and Cine line.

I love the FX6, getting to manage three units every week.
The biggest glaring thing that stands out to me is that 4K/UHD acquisition is only really possible in the camera when using Full Frame glass, which for me and my team's purposes, HD is never an option, almost always needing 4K or UHD deliverables.
Unfortunately, we have a large inventory of S35/APS-C lenses that are basically unusable on the FX6 because the S35 capture mode on the cam is only HD. Clear Image zoom is a poor work around that doesn't scale enough and loses capture resolution.

Turns out they’re more than enough camera for me. My research now has me thinking it’ll be a few more years until we see a mark II of these cameras. Apart from FX6 lacking a 3.5mm mic input like the FX3 to take advantage of the 3/4 audio tracks, there’s really nothing wrong with it. Well, it could use a new, smaller PZ lens than the ancient 28-135… maybe we see a 24-105 PZ this year to compete with canon.
I’m also finding myself wanting camcorder again these days. Now I’m eying the XF605, as it has the sauce, but hesitant because surely Sony must update the Z90/190/280 camcorders lineup to 4K 10 Bit soon, yeah? Maybe?

Case in point, just 2 days ago, Sony announced firmware updates for the FX6, FX3, and FX30. But noticeably absent from that list? The FX9.
Also, the price drop the FX9 had back in June of last year, coupled with its exclusion from the latest firmware update announcement, really makes me think that you are in the money with your prediction, and we will see an FX9 replacement of sorts announcement this year, with perhaps the sensor, or at least a sensor heavily based off of the A9 III. @extrashot

TLDR: FX9/A7M3 sensor just suck for video (obviously, it is same technology, but FX9 use stack to faster readout and maybe better selected) vs new gen sensor since A7S3. Too much noise, slightly covered by hidden NR build in sensor.
As as "poor man" A73 owner (not S!) just for hobby, I feel so satisfited by this video. You know, as soon as you bite the bullet, accumulate money, finaly have access to "premuim semi-pro" with ability to "shoot in s-log" you start to try and enjoy every feature like low light night scenes, astrophoto, insane ISO 51000, endless tests to see what exactly that "detail" PP suboption do. Read everything about "back light, dual base iso" sensor, get goosebump trying it and see yes it really work and make cleaner image as 100 and 640 with naked eye (800/4000 in log, 800/1000 in hybrid gamma, etc). And finally, cold shower of shit result in comparison with any even absolutely technically unaware ppl who barely can find on/off button, but with A7S3/FX3. That was really hard. You know everything, you can stage any light setup at home, set any settings, and result... shit. No, at bright areas with contrast detail it is very good, but as soon you try to pay attention on background or anything with gradient flat it is just joke like 3-bit toy camera with plastic scratched lens.
Once, I give up, and start to randomly change settiings. And I go 1/4 sec in video (camera cannot go less in video mode.). You know, that slide show fun mode, everything smudge to nothing when you move camera a bit. But, when I tried to hold camera relatively still, I get THAT. Almost ideal FX3/A7s3 feel pro video. Every damn gradient on out of focus areas is insanely clean with juicy proper color, like in movie.
That is it and only it. You cannot outcom sensor limitation by changing modes, slog, lens (yes, I go crazy and got insanely costly for me 24F14GM, it change nothing btw. Slightly better.), postpro noise NR, nothing. Get camera with proper sensor, done.
