Great of you to include some of the best SMW glitches. Funnily most major glitches or exploits in SMW are based on Yoshi which is understandable, considering it was the first game with Yoshi in it and therefore there's a huge list of glitches based entirely on Yoshi.

Look up "Arbitrary Code Execution TAS". It's literally reprogramming the game, from within the game, using only the game, by fucking with coding exploits and memory input. Gen 1 Pokémon is another good example.

But these ruleset are often quite arbitary, because it's often very hard to define what a glitch is and not. Allowing them all, the standard "any%" category, makes it a simple and logical definition.

Captain Olimar This is a typical incorrect assumption that as soon as a glitch is used, it makes it a lot easier. Sometimes, yes, that is the case, but far from always. For a game like Super Mario Bros, beating it without the timesaving glitches is ONLY less skillful. As mentioned before: People with these kind of opinions are just very unfamiliar with speedruns and glitches. The basic goal of a speedrun is to beat the game you hold in your hand quickly. Reaching the end means you have finished the game. The goal is not to play through the game in the "most skillful" way anyway, but to do it as quickly as possible. I highly agree that beating A Link to the Past in 1½ minutes, compared to a "full" run (Which takes about 1½ hours, also using glitches), is both not as enjoyable or as skillful in that regard. But it is the fastest way to beat the game using only what the game has to offer and no cheat codes of modifications. This is what the "any%" speedrun definition is for. The more kind of rules you add, or what you are allowed or not to do, it will become more and more arbitary, as it steps away from the basic goal of "Beat the game as fast as possible". There is, and will never be, a "most skillful run" category, or "as the game was intended to be played" (Which is also an incredibly bad definition for a number of reasons). I don't mind people not liking glitches to be used in speedruns, but the reasoning why is often very bad because of lack of knowledge on the matter. Long post, sorry =). Though there is still yet so much to explain and include!

Look up "Arbitrary Code Execution TAS". It's literally reprogramming the game, from within the game, using only the game, by fucking with coding exploits and memory input. Gen 1 Pokémon is another good example.

The fact that they're played a LOT more then most games makes this no surprise. The fact that some glitches are still being discovered, with insane tricky setups just shows how polished was the programing.

Glitched speed runs don't count in my eyes, it would be like me entering cheat codes to level skip and consider it a speed run.

Some games do have "Glitchless" categories. But these ruleset are often quite arbitary, because it's often very hard to define what a glitch is and not. Allowing them all, the standard "any%" category, makes it a simple and logical definition.

Speedruns are not impressive at all if glitches are used.
It takes true skill to speed run a game the way it is meant to be played.
Captain Olimar This is a typical incorrect assumption that as soon as a glitch is used, it makes it a lot easier. Sometimes, yes, that is the case, but far from always. For a game like Super Mario Bros, beating it without the timesaving glitches is ONLY less skillful.
As mentioned before: People with these kind of opinions are just very unfamiliar with speedruns and glitches.
The basic goal of a speedrun is to beat the game you hold in your hand quickly. Reaching the end means you have finished the game. The goal is not to play through the game in the "most skillful" way anyway, but to do it as quickly as possible. I highly agree that beating A Link to the Past in 1½ minutes, compared to a "full" run (Which takes about 1½ hours, also using glitches), is both not as enjoyable or as skillful in that regard.
But it is the fastest way to beat the game using only what the game has to offer and no cheat codes of modifications. This is what the "any%" speedrun definition is for. The more kind of rules you add, or what you are allowed or not to do, it will become more and more arbitary, as it steps away from the basic goal of "Beat the game as fast as possible".
There is, and will never be, a "most skillful run" category, or "as the game was intended to be played" (Which is also an incredibly bad definition for a number of reasons).
I don't mind people not liking glitches to be used in speedruns, but the reasoning why is often very bad because of lack of knowledge on the matter.

It's also based on Mario's status. e.g. If you successfully perform the trick with the Chargin' Chuck on Yoshi's Island 2 as big Mario you instead become invincible and get a Bullet Bill in the item box.
