Some patents like that are still around. In the PS3/360/Wii console generation a company (I believe Capcom) had a patent on minigames on loading screens, so very few if any games during that time had them.
Well air was discovered in 1774 so I think we're clear on that.

Virtual Racing possibly? It had the option to change camera on the cabinet but then again it came out in 1992 so it wouldn't have been a recent development.
I was thinking of Virtua Racing. But part of me had a feeling it was a different game with a camera control that was more similar to Mario 64's
