In this episode we take a look at some facts, secrets, and history of New Super Mario Bros. New Super Mario Bros is a platform game made by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS. It was the first original side-scrolling platform game starring Mario since Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins in 1992, and the first game to be a part of the main Super Mario series of video games since Super Mario Sunshine in 2002. The game broke the record in Japan for the best-selling debut of a Nintendo DS game. The game sold over 30 million copies worldwide, and is the best-selling game for the DS, and one of the best-selling video games of all time. It was followed up by New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and later New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Nintendo 3DS, and New Super Mario Bros. U for the Wii U.

This game's popularity was so widespread that even my Dad would borrow my DS to play.
The newest games he still plays are Dr Mario and Tetris on NES and Gameboy.

We take NSMB for granted but it really was amazing when it first arrived.
Indeed, plus many like to hate on the series claiming it has "too many sequels," (despite there being only one NewSMB game for every new system every 5 years) or because they don't "do anything new." (While hypothetically bashing original games for being "gimmicky," and praising games like Madden or FPS sequels.)
Do they want to go back to how it was when there were no new sidescrolling Mario games sense the Gameboy game Super Mario Land 2? Seriously, that is over a decade gap from 1992 to 2006's NewSMB for DS.

I still find it kinda sad that nobody ever mentions NSMB U. I know it was the forth in the series, but it was still pretty damn creative with its level design and extra features like challenge mode.
NSMB is what got me into Mario. if it wasn't for it I wouldn't be the person I am today, as dramatic as it sounds

I really want a new 3D mario adventure style game. 3D World was more of a new spin on the 2D linear games. The last true 3D game was what? Galaxy 2 in 2010? So it's been almost 6 years.
I feel the same way. I actually don't like the 2D games all that much.

This is, in my opinion, one of the best games ever made. It's so simple and fun, and when it came out it was portable! You could just play this fun little game for hours anywhere you were! And on top of that, it had fun minigames, some of which could be up to 4 players!
And the versus mode was some of the best fun I've had with my brother ever. It's one of my fondest memories to just screw around and compete for star coins during a road trip.
Such a masterful game.

The pause between the D and S each time he said DS was kinda weird.

I think it's funny how a game that's almost a decade old now is still called "new". :P It's kind of redundant.

+Purple Villager I've always took it as "new" meaning that it's something different from the original 2D platforming Super Mario Bros. line of games. So "New Super Mario Bros." and the "new" meaning it's a start of a new era of 2D Mario games.

It also has different instruments, extra instruments and is seperate in the data from the used track

Hearing a 14 year old say how things have changed is weird. I'm 32. NES and SNES Mario games were my childhood. The jump into 3D with Mario 64 was amazing.

+ShyGuyXXL *Third one. Wii's multiplayer modes were innovative enough, along with the upscaled difficulty. NSMBU and NSMB2, on the other-hand...
+DarkLink1996 nsmbu is arguably the best in the series with great powerups (including the new acorn suit which is much better than the propeller suit) and the most challenging/rewarding game in the series. The only problem with it is the time it came out. Nsmb2 though I have no excuses for. They complained about new super mario bros being too easy and yet the somehow found a way to make its direct sequel easier. the coin gimmick was boring and only succeeded in giving you too many lives and all the power ups and bosses were reused from other better games. Nsmb2 is not a bad game it is perfectly playable and kinda fun, but it is the worst game in the series and showed exactly what was wrong with the Mario series at that time.

Did you know? "New" is just a localization quirk, they're trying to use a naming convention that only makes sense in Japan.
They're pretty much going for "new and shiny" exciting, not fresh exciting. The Japanese wording means a bit more than it does elsewhere.

4:39 Actually, the theme from the NSMB beta video _did_ make it into the game, but was only used as one of the two multiplayer background tracks.

Personally, I found New Super Mario Bros games to be a very easy.
The only tough parts were having another player.
+Muhammad Gheith Stop with the having lives excuse, people with lives still play video games when they can, specially the casual ones like Mario Bros, easy or hard does not matter. Difficult games doesn't mean you have to waste all day to finish a hard level in mario bros, you can always stop and play later

essengeebee I think most people don't really consider it to be in the main series because for the majority of the game you play as Yoshi, who controls completely differently to Mario, and the levels are designed differently to how they would be in a Mario game. It doesn't really matter to be honest, this is a pretty stupid thing to argue about :P

I have been playing mario games ever since the release of super Mario world on SNES. And these new games they have been releasing have not disappointed me in fact they only keep my interest and love for the franchise stronger. Thank you for an amazing childhood and still being one of my favorite games.

+Aztyph The main gimmick in 2 is getting coins. Lots and lots and lots of coins. It's not a bad game at all, but it gets kinda bland when all you do is constantly getting coins without even trying. But that's just what I think.
Aztyph One of my favorite parts of the New Super Mario Bros. games are the new Powerups. New Super Mario Bros. 2, which is actually New Super Mario Bros. 3, only had the Fire Flower, Gold Flower (which was a glorified Fire Flower), and Raccoon Leaf. All the new powerups from 1 and Wii were removed.
Oh, the memories. The music, the minigames... I even remember the cheat code (would you call that a cheat code?) used to play as Luigi.
Man, this video brought back so many nostalgic memories... and then made me feel old when I realized these games started coming out almost ten years ago : /
I owned this game for a week and loved it so much, my friend who was moving came over one day and I never saw my game or him again. I haven't played it since.

I loved using the Super Mushroom against the Giant Goomba. In fact I especially enjoyed using it in the final boss stage against Bowser and Bowser Jr.

I love this game so much. New Super Mario Bros. was my very first game for the Nintendo DS and one of my favorite installments on said system. It was just so perfect and was pretty challenging for me since I was playing it at a young age. I loved how each of the bosses were actually different and not just the Koopalings from Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. I especially love how Petey Piranha was added in World 5
