How Ferrari has 'completely redesigned' its F1 car for 2023

  • Ferrari’s 2023 Formula 1 challenger may look like a natural development of last year’s fast but underachieving car, but the team describes it as “completely redesigned”.
Those are the words of head of chassis, Enrico Cardile, who called the car an evolution but pointed to major aerodynamic and mechanical changes conceived to improve performance and achieve the characteristics the team wants.
Cardile talked of Ferrari increasing “vertical downforce”, while adapting further to the new rules that came in last year, and he also highlighted suspension changes that have been made to improve the car’s aero and increase the team’s set-up options.
Given the speed of last year’s car, an improved version of its visually-distinctive concept combined with a reliable power unit package it could be enough to make Ferrari a genuine championship contender.

Ferrari has redesigned car launches! I believe that it should be required to actually run your car on track day of launch! This was the best car launch of 2023! Unless another team is putting both cars on track together, this is the best launch of the year!

Ferrari never had a problem last year with its design of aero, everyone this year is copying redbull while ferrari knows that they were well designed.....the problem was the strategy with the wing setups and tire decisions, and some reliability problems.......I believe this year will be great competition

I'm confident they'll do well under Vasseur this season. The performance is clearly there, it's just team culture that needed to be changed, something I'm sure Fred knows. I won't say Ferrari will win the title this year but I won't sule it out after the restructuring and statements from Vigna. They finally seem to understand their problems.

I hope that the strategy etc has improved at least as much as the car, though should be more. Still not convinced that it'll be up for beating Max and RB, but there's nothing in fate's rules that says last year's cars are going to be as good as this year's. Nobody is entitled to a championship, they're all earned (though that's something many people "forgot" when Lewis was winning so often).
Let the best driver & team win! I genuinely don't care who it is as long as it's a genuine win.
(Edit: that last comment wasn't aimed at anyone or any team during any time. It was just as I think it should be.)

I watched the launch, and noticed how stiff the front end is, almost popping onto 3 wheels on a couple of corners. But ferrarri's risk of underperformed is not the car itself, but down to nailing it together properly and getting all the staff and direction pointing in the same way consistently.

You guys missed what I think should be the biggest talking point around Ferrari’s design this year, the secret vent hidden under the sidepod that seems to escape somewhere behind the driver’s head.
Former Mercedes aerodynamicist Kyle.Engineers talked about it in his video. I could never do it justice but based on his analysis I understand that most likely its purpose is to move dirty air up and away from the top of the floor, which should in theory keep a nice clean flow to the diffuser/beam wing. I suggest anyone that wants to know more about it (and a more in-depth look at the design in general) go watch his video.

    - they have found and regained the massive aero lost with the TD39

    - they have sorted their strategy compartment, which problems in my opinion have to be addressed to their lack of a proper AI live strategy generator rather than only human mistakes
