- In 2019, the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300 became the first production car to drive 300 mph. This was almost 15 years after the Bugatti Veyron became the first to reach 250. So why did it take so long for automakers to build a car just 50 mph faster? Interesting thing is, as a car approaches speeds over 300 mph, the top of the tires are actually traveling twice as fast as the vehicle. The tires themselves are coming very close to breaking the sound barrier haha

@@temujinartem2375 the car is traveling at 300 mph, if you pick a point on the circumference of the tire and watch the tire go round as the car drives, the car is traveling forward and the point on the circumference of the tire is going forward 2 times as fast as the tire goes round and round.
Thank you for taking the time to break it down to the average human that it's not about raw fast the car is, it's about EVERY single other aspect of the vehicle, the road, the weather that matters as well. In other words driving is physics and people should never forget that.

@@NumberOneBlitz yeah but im more talking resistance of air flow against the body surface, brake pressure If you even have the balls to remotely go near the brake pedal at the speed which you really shouldn't, temperature the tires reach, how long the tread is going to last and what exactly are the most optimal conditions for being an idiot ( driving fast ). Like he said the difference between what was it? 120 and 150 is astronomical? It genuinely is, at that speed you have to take compression and rebound rate of your suspension and how nice the roads are, if you're car is too high off the ground you start to float as opposed to be glued to the ground so you fight not only the air you're driving into but the air trying to lift you off the ground. Honestly driving is physics and it's really nice when people understand that, they see raw HP # and top speed numbers and don't care about how the brakes or suspension was created, I'm interested in the suspension and brakes and tires that went into that feat

Science is fascinating, it's just something alot of people don't take into account when driving, be it stopping distance or reaction time alot of people think that because their car cost alot it will keep them safe

ive been 202.4 mph in 2013 at tx2k and i cant imagine what it would feel like doing 100mph more its just crazy man how much ground you cover you have to decide on a small adjustment seconds before its needed

The actual reason is because technology just hasn’t improved enough until now. We’ve been capable of building cars that exceed speeds far beyond 300mph for a long time now, but this is regarding reaching 300mph in a PRODUCTION CAR. And figuring out how to make a car that could go 300 while still being road legal is incredibly difficult.
Road cars are noticeably heavier than dragsters and track cars so yeah.

I say we change the definition of what is road legal. Build cars that span 2 lanes, we'd do well above 500mph

Lift vs down force is a HUGE problem. The weight to power ratio of these cars are exceeding WWII single seat fighter planes. Staying on the ground as a car versus becoming a kite is a big issue. At some point notwithstanding jet cars tested at Bonneville, cars will have a speed maximum

I think most motorcyclists already have a basic understanding of this concept. I used to ride an FZ-07 (it's a "naked bike" with no wind shield or fairings to "hide" behind) and let me tell yah what, the wind resistance is trying to tear you off the bike the whole time. 60mph isn't too bad, 80mph and you're gonna need to hold yourself on, 100mph and its starting to turn into a workout, and anything over 120mph requires some strength.
Yeah naked bikes are always a challenge. I used to hit 133 on my fz-09, it almost felt like I was being thrown around on the highway. Steering dampers do help a little
120 on an fz07 is real impressive. That's quite literally pushing that bike the the very limit of its capabilities.

I’ve taken my car to 163mph and it was a trip how fast things come at you and how much you have to think ahead.
I remember when I was 16 and dumb, I took my '93 (stock) Civic (in 2001) to 117mph on an expressway in the middle of the night and I thought the whole car was going to fall apart

As someone with a 2004 Subaru Legacy that once did 85 MPH on a freeway, I can say I couldn't possibly drive a Bugatti sports car.
I was white-knuckled and barely blinked for the entire half-hour before pulling onto an exit. Seeing signs go flying past when I live in an area where it's rare to see a 55mph sign, I can't imagine needing to go over a hundred.
That being said, if I win the lottery, you can bet I'll be taking some lessons. Always wanted to go fast!

When he said Bugatti's biggest competitor was Hennessey, I automatically lost all respect and belief in his information. Koenigsegg has a history of not only breaking records, but by huge margins and the Jesko Absolut is poised to do the exact same thing without a shadow of a doubt.

Funny thing is, Bugatti, is not only being possibly acquired by Rimac, but they have already confirmed, that for the next five decades, they will be focusing instead on their extremely limited production cars. Cars like the La Voiture Noir are just the first of this new phase, they will no longer be pursuing top speed records for quite some time as well.

The effect of aerodynamic drag was made very apparent to me when I made a 4 hour drive, spent an hour at destination then drove back. The net direction of travel was east to west. There was a stiff and constant westerly wind blowing all day resulting in about a 30% difference in fuel burn between the down wind and upwind legs.
It's also apparent to anyone who's ridden a motorcycle, since you literally feel the drag on your body intensify (and become nigh unbearable over 120mph)

There's a technical error at 1:10. The force required to overcome air resistance increases as the square of speed, not the cube. The POWER required increases as the cube of speed.

Fastest I have ever gone in a car was 320km/hr. The car was still picking up speed but the pavement was coming up too fast. It was on a dead road with no traffic in a 2007 C6 Corvette with a Callaway Supercharger kit installed. It was no Porsche, Lambo or Ferrari but to me it was a dream come true! The sound that supercharger made was visceral!

Honestly this was a perfect video and more should be like this: to the point, covered everything quickly and simply, and no extra BS. Thank you.
It left a bit to be desired in a couple of areas. The graphics were good and I really liked that it pointed out the limitations of tyres. But what I particularly liked was the way they explained that drag increases with the cube of the velocity.
What they left out was a decent understanding od aerodynamics. Downforce in this sphere is hard for most people to comprehend, even if they did understand the earlier parts. The most important thing here is not downforce. It's balance. If you put a wing on the back of the car, you need to balance it at the front, either with body shaping or with an underbody shape. the fact that the car only produces a small amount of downforce at its maximum speed is a fair indication that it's not a strictly critical component. It's needed but since this is about outright speed, rather than going around corners, a maximum load would not help. It would also create problems for the tyres which are already under maximum pressure.

Another interesting limit to consider is that set by the speed of sound. The top of the wheel will be going twice as fast as the car itself, so if the car approaches 375 mph, the rubber on the wheels would break the soundbarrier 200 times a second, generating increased drag and putting additional stresses on the wheel.
Although these stresses are nothing in comparison with the centrifugal forces these wheels experience, they are still an interesting side effect to consider.
Dopler effect doesn't work like that.
I wasn't talking about the doppler effect, just the fact that the tops off the wheels are moving twice as fast as the car itself, which causes them to break the sound barrier when the car only goes half the speed of sound. This causes dragg on the wheels but primarily puts extreme stresses on them.
When setting the land speed record, engineers solved this issue by designing sollid smooth aluminium wheels, which created less dragg and most importantly didn't tear themselves apart (by resisting both centrifugal forces and the breaking of the soundbarrier).
@@rutgerdobbelaere4716 sonic boom is due to dopler effect. I was referencing your first comment. Drag is obviously not the major problem for tires. They aren't directly exposed to incoming wind as F1.
The major two issues are keeping the bulk modulus of tires such that they are not completely rock solid or soft enough to tear due to extreme shearing force while touching the ground.

I first learned about this effect with helicopters. Here, the tips of the rotor could potentially break the soundbarrier if it goes to fast. This is why we don't see really fast classical helicopters (speed record of only 299mph). In helicopters, this effect is much much greater, hence my overestimation.

Not sure if it's been said, but at 300mph, the top of the tire is returning to the front at effectively 600mph, or about Mach .78. At 380mph, the top of the tires would be trans-sonic. One of many things to think about in engineering

Fastest I've ever gone was 200kmh, but that was on a sports bike. Even at that speed the wind force is insane. Also, your vision goes into a warp speed tunnel effect on a bike at a certain speed.
I drove a 1984 Nissan 300zx at 130 mph (210 kph) and a 1989 Suzuki Katana 750 at 150 mph (240 kph).
Ferrari F40 was never tested by Ferrari themselves or motoring journalists back in the day reaching 200mph, a French Magazine tested one at 198mph. No stock Ferrari F40 can reach 200mph.

The concepts have been well known for over a century. Since then it's only a matter of using newly-developed materials and applying brute force engineering.
I have mad respect for Bugatti and I remember watching the 253 mph run they did back when TH-cam was basically brand new... but in my opinion, I'd say the most impressive car engineering feat is the Koenigsegg One:1. Power-to-weight ratio (along with near-perfect aerodynamics) is the holy grail for super car manufacturers.
These people forget how a Callaway Sledgehammer C4 Corvette did 254 MPH in 1989 11 years before.

But it astounded me especially in this case as the guy seemed generally to know what he was talking about but to put exponentially and increasing quadratically directly next to each other makes no sense at all. One would think people knew better about exponential growth in the middle of a pandemic... Generally I found the relation between power, velocity and air resistance very unclear in the video as several powers of the velocity were named at different points in the video. Without air resistance, power is linear with velocity, but air resistance is quadratical in velocity, so together you get that power is proportional to velocity cubed.

Kenny Bernstein went 300mph in 1992 in a dragster. It just took a while for regular cars to catch up. After they started going 330mph a few years ago they had to shorten the 1/4 mile to 1000 feet. They could go faster but the tracks are too short.

Also, keep in mind Where you can do this. "Oh, we'll just take it out to a track." There are no 300 MPH tracks. There aren't any 250MPH tracks, because there's only a handful of cars that are capable of those speeds. You don't have to just drive it at 300 MPH. You have to get it up to 300 miles per hour, then back down to 0, without killing anyone in the process. There's honestly not many places in the world with a straightaway long enough, and flat enough to do that. If you hit a bump, you can fly right off the track. So it also has to have no bumps large enough to send you out of control. That means maintaining the track so it doesn't develop any bumps, that kill one of the few test drivers who've ever driven a car that fast. In addition to all the exponential problems that kept us from doing it for so long in the first place.
You might as well have the car start to fly if going faster than 300mph.

Its mainly tires and drag, its pretty easy to just add more power. And you need to keep in mind that speed isnt the only goal of the car so it is a compermise.

If you reduce drag you can get way better return on investment because drag increases exponentially with speed so just a little less drag can help alot. Also. A ludicrus tesla motor puts out 650 hp so im pretty confadent that they can get powerful enough motors. Im sure i could find a car that i can modify to beat the bugatti anyway.

Growing up in the 70s, I admired The Blue Flame, an experimental car that set records at the time of over 600mph. I seem to remember the front of the car getting discolored from heat during its runs, though this could be my imagination.
