After years of living in the shadow of more desirable offerings from Japan, Chevrolet gives the 2016 Malibu a completely new premium look with impressive tech features to match. Are the changes enough to make you choose it over the top selling Camry and Accord?

I had an 04 Chevy Malibu classic with 248,400+ miles on it. Ran strong for 3 years and is still running well. I just bought a 2014 Chevy Equinox. We use the Malibu as a backup now. Needless to say, when taken care of, that car can and will run strong. I like Chevy which is why I got another one 👌🏾

I am tired of reviewers trying to make all cars drive like Sports Cars. This is a family sedan or retired persons vehicle they aren't looking to carve canyons with them. Is it quiet? Check! Does it have good visibility? Check! Does it get good MPG? Check! Does it give a great ride? Check! is it safe? Check! Does it have great Tech? Check! Does it have enough room? Check! Is it powerful enough? Check! Does the company back it up? Check!

The Malibu has poor rearward visibility (as does the Impala). It is unfortunate, because I would absolutely consider this car "but for" this deficiency.

I recently leased a 2016 Malibu LT. The sound system is decent. The bass sounds pretty solid. I listen to a pretty wide variety of music too and I can't complain about it. It's not great. But it's not bad either.

I leased a 2016 Malibu with the LT trim from Enterprise 2 months ago and went on a 1000 mile road trip. The problem is you can't compare the audio in the LT to the Premier because the Premier comes with a 9 speaker Bose audio system. So can anyone chime in on what they think of that Bose system in this trim? I plan to go find
this trim this weekend to test drive it. I'm in a quandary between this Premier and the highest trim 2016 Buick Regal.

I demo'd a LTZ 2.0T and was pretty impressed for a stock stereo. I was really impressed with the power of the 2.0T. I also demo'd a Dodge Durango Citadel with the 5.7 hemi. I was kind of expecting the Durango to be a little more powerful but it was a slug. Interior was super nice and the stereo rocked in the Durango. We lined up the two and the Malibu walked off from the Durango.

@@whatsup783 Its been 4 years now and I didn't realized I sounded I had high hopes for this car. Currently at 87,888 miles (at the time of this reply). This is what I've dealt with so far.
2017: 18K~ miles The stop/start module had to be replaced and GM issues a recall to reflash the PCM to back the turbo timing as the car was running lean. This was the beginning of the pre-mature cracked pistons/LSPI.
2018: 46K~ miles Oil Solenoid failed and changed under warranty. December of the same year car was starting to make a ticking noise.
2019: Long story short of the ticking issue. Car was loosing compression and running poor. Dealer tore down the block and heads are warped, pistons melted and caked with carbon. They determined new motor under powertrain warranty at 59K~. Keep in mind standard GM powertrain is 5 years/60K. Had I waited longer I wouldn't be so lucky. October of same year headliner was leaking without my knowledge until I got a letter from GM. Entire liner was replaced under special coverage at 65K~ miles.
      2020:
      1. Alternator dying at 79K~
      2. Driver side CV axle making clicking noise/loosing fluid early COVID so about March/April. Replaced at 81K~along with 2 new rear shocks that actually started to go back at 60K~ (a month after getting a new motor back in 2019)
Didn't really mention but oil changes, transmission fluid change, 3 sets of tires, 3 batteries.
Current issues/might break in the near future:
      1. 75F and up the rear suspension makes a creaking noise while backing up, pulling out of drive ways, pulling up, small hills. Can’t determine if its spindles, sway bar bushings/hardware, or etc. Shocks were part of the problem and replaced 9/2020. But current cold weather or night time driving, 0 noise. Handling is perfectly fine.
      2. Car kind of lunges after releasing brake pedal to start up again from (stop-start feature) stand still (intersection, stop sign, drive thru, etc.). It does that too on cold start up but perfectly fine throughout the day. Can’t determine engine mounts or transmission mounts or etc.
      3. Transmission overrevs slightly between 2nd-3rd gear for some time now. Upshift/downshifts fine. Fluid changed 9/2020. Just can’t tell if it will grenade itself.
      4. Due to being paranoid I feel I’m hearing the ticking sound (before it blew up/low compression). I kind of just stand and listen. Check gauges and everything seems to be fine. I know it’s running fine but it’s on the back of my head “Will you blow up today?”
      5. A/C probably needs a recharge in the spring/summer. Takes a bit longer to get cold.
      6. A/C fan blower fan is starting to make this squeaking noise when it’s on low/medium settings. Goes away when the fan is off. Will look in to when it gets worse.
Current cosmetic issues or quirks that I just live with/don’t care to fix.
      1. Driver side auto down feature acts finicky at times. Auto up the window and ¾ it will auto down itself. Do that 2 times and I just manually hold it up. Its fine but door switch or motor might give out someday day.
      3. Center console (cup holder area), right door panel, under steering column rattles under WOT.
      4. Once in a blue moon the MyLink system will lockup and freeze itself. Have to park/lock/walk away for a bit. Start up again and its fine. Same think with A/C. It will blow room temp air.
      5. Dent on hood from baseball. 100% my fault and don’t care to fix. Been 3+ years now.
      6. Tiny door dings and unknown scratches that appear the morning after. Probably from shopping center parking lots and etc. Don’t care to fix.
      7. Don’t know if the chevy dealer messed up my roof or somewhere (genuinely don’t know what happened) but entire roof is all scratched up like no tomorrow. Needs deep polish/wax/clay/wet stand probably. At this point don’t really care nor want to blow money to fix.
The car has not been lemon law yet because every single recall/warranty work/repair has been legit been fixed right the first time by the dealers. In which I don’t mind but it seems like GM builds around planned obsolescence like they don’t want you to make the product last 100K miles. Unfortunately that seems to be the truth in this day and age. I've spent about $5,4xx+ (so far) just on unexpected repairs and maintenance in 4 years. Overall when its not broken or at the mechanic it drives decently but when it breaks it becomes very frustrating.

I just pick up a fully loaded 2017 9 speed automatic Malibu premier. The car is absolutely perfect no squeaks no rattles as some are saying. Fit and finish is perfect. And not that long ago Toyota and Honda has had the most recalls of any car manufacture and also Toyota Camry around five years ago did not pass the crash safety test. The reason I will not buy a Mazda 6 , why spent all that money for an under power motor. I have great fuel economy, also the curb weight is 3.380 pounds. 0 to 60 in 5.7 seconds in the quarter mile goes by at 14.3 at almost 100 mph top speed is drag limited at 156 mph. Sticker price 36,600 after rebates and employee pricing for everyone my Final price came to 29,875. With a Payment of $389 A month. So yes, you foreign car lovers can put the Chevy Malibu down, but the 2.0 T 9 speed is is awesome to drive and your biased towards the car you’re missing out.

I used to sell cars before and one of the dealerships I worked for was a Chevy dealership and I have to say this new Malibu is a huge improvement over the last generation.. Nicer design and a lot more legroom in the back.. The old one had the same amount of back space of my Civic, it was really cramped.. The rear end of this Malibu reminds me of a Audi A7. Obviously this car is no Audi but this something I might consider when I am in the market for a new car again.

Awesome to see a car review in my hood of Arling-TRON. A recent Malibu hybrid test drive brought me here. Your reviews have been used to spec next car for grow'g family. Our Chicco NextFit zip fit + Peg Perego Primo Viaggio 4-35 in rear facing position fit superbly in Malibu w/ room to spare for driver and passenger. We are transitioning from 2003 Acura 3.2TL V6 which was built in Ohio, many are, + was forced to cough up $ for rebuilt tranny (2010) + faulty Tekada airbag that Chevy does not use. We did spec Mazda 6 w/ nice drive, Tekada airbag, elegant interior, no CVT, so-so tires, less roomy & a bit delicate for kids. They did boast Japanese parts, which is not norm w/ some manufactures using engine parts from China (Toyota). There's a trade off here since I preferred the adaptive LED lights and more reliability. It's a tough choice, but leaning toward wanting more MPG, less maintenance w/ hybrid. This hybrid drove better than CVT Prius and Rav4 hybrids + seems next best to Volt.

@Jamal H , very good points you make here.
Since these comments were coming in about seven years ago everything has changed, except for the same old people making ridiculous comments about how some cars sell more than another, which means nothing about the true performance or value; it just means that people are duped to buy whatever is popularly advertised.
Last year in the Autumn of 2022, while my 2001 Mercedes E320 wagon was being worked on, I rented a 2022 Malibu 2.0 Premier.
    It's amazing for a four-cylinder turbo and a 9-speed automatic transmission.
In fact it's a copy of what Mercedes has been offering for their newer E350 sport wagons.
This 2022 Malibu with a four-cylinder turbo and 9-speed automatic transmission is absolutely phenomenal.
I took it over the Coast Range Mountains from Portland to the Oregon Coast beaches, I learned while reading a review and driving it, that it does zero to 100 in 7 seconds flat.
My Mercedes E320 does only 0 to 60 in 7 seconds flat.
For those people that are saying they still prefer Toyota Camry's or Honda Accords, they need to get up to speed and look at the newer model Chevy Malibu's now since 2022.
I hear recent news that they're discontinuing this phenomenal performance model, as to soon returning with a newer non-turbo version but a larger V6 engine mated it to this nine-speed automatic, but I haven't seen the performance specs on this new model for 2024 yet.

Great review, Sofyan! Obviously these commenters think they're professionals who get to judge a car without even seeing it in person first. I have had a lot of experience with these new Malibu's (saw it at the car show and have went to dealers around to test drive). I think it has a serious road presence. No angle of the car is unattractive to me. In fact, the side and rear quarter view (especially in the sun) really bring out the sculpted lines and make it look very sleek (something a Camry, Accord, Sonata, Optima, Altima, Legacy, or Passat can even come close to compete with). The Malibu, 6, Fusion, and Maxima are all the best looking in the class. As for the Malibu's interior, I really think it's a nice place to spend some time in. Don't complain about the hard touch plastics because even the Accord's and Camry's that everyone has come to know have the cheap stuff (the Camry especially). I've already seen some buyers and reviewers with the 2.0T engine achieving as much as 35mpg on the highway, so you must have really been punching it or it just wasn't broken in yet.

I disagree. Not a single inch of this car is attractive. Hideous all around, inside and out. They're disgusting. Accord looks the best in the class to me. Plus it's a GM. American cars are a joke. The Malibu has odd lines that don't make sense and the front looks like absolute shit. Rear is ugly too. It's just not an attractive car. Never has been.

    • @evanganske9240

Caleb Chapman Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and these new Malibu's have a 53% increase in year to date sales, so most would agree that this is a good looking car. Personally, I think the refreshed Accord looks like a pig with chrome lipstick. The previous generation looked much sleeker (almost BMW-like). This new Malibu has a very A7-like profile, and I love it.

ravenmadx Chevrolet is on track to selling over 250,000 of these new Malibu's per year. Compare that to the average per year sales of the previous generation of around 195,000. Buyers are taking notice. Also, this new generation is more profitable for GM.

I would never drive a car that anyone could own and no one discerning would choose, but you have Toyota, Honda, Dodge, Hyundai, Kia, etc etc etc...all cars driven by people who don't care about what they drive and are on a budget, and in five years, all end up worth nothing and sitting next to a trailer. That's does not, however, mean the reviewer has to be so obviously biased. It screams "subjective" rather than "objective." Not cool, even if the car isn't cool, and I actually think this one is pretty nice.

    • @ravenjames3873
      @ravenjames3873 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

this doesn't compete with the Civic, the Civic is compact car. the Malibu is a midsize sedan that competes with the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Mazda 6. that being said looks are subjective when it comes to cars, and most modern cars except for Mazda look hideous especially alot of the front ends on cars. that's why people are switching to crossover SUV's and trucks, because there not trying to be something there not. alot of modern sedans look sporty, but don't really drive that way.

    • @ravenjames3873
      @ravenjames3873 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

ah the Civic doesn't look better than the Cruze Forrest, or should i call you Forrest Gump lol. the new Cruze will age much better than the Civic, with that shitty ass grill. i like new Cruze more than the Malibu, because the new Malibu won't age very well. it's trying to hard to look like the Impala, and it just doesn't work for me. ill take the Accord over the Malibu, but i won't take the Civic over the Cruze it's just not happening.

I've read that GM makes $1,000 to $3,000 per full size pick up vehicles that they make. The Japanese(Toyota or Honda) make $100 to $300 per small car vehicles that they make. GM put a lot of money in making their full size pickup trucks where they make the most money. If you are in the market for full size pickup trucks buy domestic and if you buying small cars you can't go wrong buying Toyota or Honda.
