- Does this Terraria weapon make the game too easy? The Onyx Blaster. In this video, I take a look at this early Hardmode powerful ranged weapon which can be crafted using basic materials from the hallowed and underground corruption/ crimson biome. This weapon has been incredibly good since it was introduced and makes me question if it is in fact a little 'too' good.

@@glassofwater281 Crystal darts are probably the worst synergy with the dart rifle.
For more dps alot of people would also recommend using Crystal Bullets
Especially if you can apply ichor alongside it

I like cursed bullets with frost armor it's double damage over time
As one who used this on my first 1.4 play through, I can indeed say it’s insanely good, and only just then gets replaced by the tactical shotgun post-plantera. The fact that you can get this weapon with such ease and is that powerful is really awesome

Tbh ranged class is the most op in the game - has literally no weak point in the game, enough base def from armor sets to not die in one hit, unlimited range and wide variety of buffs for ammo and arrows.
And it even has infinite ammo after you craft endless musket pouch/endless quivers that you can use against regular enemies without worrying about the craftable hardmode ammo which is an additional lack of a weak point

@@kafelekpodogowy7185 I can definitely agree that mage is more engaging because you have to manage mana/mana sickness, but also the simplicity of ranged class and the simplicity of crafting special bullets and the gameplay in general for it is also really appealing to me
When he’s farming the dark shards did anyone notice that it had corruption chasms but it was crimson?

I’ve found that you don’t need to replace this thing until after golem. While yes, it does have a post-plantera upgrade in the form of the tactical shotgun, I’ve found it best to use that as a quick upgrade to smooth the transition between onyx blaster and xeno popper.

The dart rifle with ichor darts is much more powerful, you can easily take on all the mech bosses and plantera/golem with it. Before the nerf, the onyx blaster was really strong. Now it's just a decent and easy to obtain early hardmode weapon.
Yep, dart rifle/Pistol is great, and can easily get you to pillers
I used both dart guns and cursed flame/ichor darts on a drunk world with frost armor. Insanely fun
There is also awesome combination which include dart rifle + crystal darts. Especially when u fighting plantera or mech bosses

You have my luck basically lol. All the luck in the wrong places. I was farming RoD, and got 7 hallowed keys before 1 RoD. I was farming for fishron wings, and it took me 40 kills, and I got like 4 dev sets, 2 of which were in a row.
Hello, I built a farm yesterday and had a hell of a time with bats and archers clearing a 200x100 area.
I got the rod after 22 chaos elemental kills, including those outside the farm.
I'm happy but also not.
I got 50 beam swords before I got the rod of discord. But I did get multiple sandstorm bottles in a row so I guess that's why my luck wasn't great.

aight when i was trying to farm for tactical shotgun it took me 700 tactical skeletons to get the tactical shotgun
I got the fishron wings after the first duke fishron I defeated lol but I had to fight like around 20 Moon Lords, 7 Lunatic Cultists and Celestial events just to get the Meowmere for the Zenith. I started with around 30 platinums and ended up with over 110 by the time I finally got it
These videos are really nice. I don't have to browser through wiki for every item now and just watch a good video that also tests the damage and such.

@@rayquarizard2911 I meant both of them, they both are good up until post-planeta, with blade staff having a bit higher skill floor since you basically have to use whip stack of you want to get most out of it
You need to do a progression guide for master the worthy with A/S/SSS ranks. Your balance of farming time, frequency of enemy, and frequency of drop, is always appreciated. All of these one off videos makes it hard to stitch together the whole picture.

glad to see this weapon finally getting the attention this deserves. I've been using it ever since it was introduced and I've felt its always been overshadowed by other options despite being arguable better than a lot of them
The ichor bullets can hit enemies before the dark energy projectile so it makes the projectile do more damage even the first time you shoot that enemy

The ranger combo I always seem to go to in early hardmode is the Onyx Blaster w/ crystal bullets and the Dart Pistol/Dart Rifle w/ Ichor darts. Always Carries me up till Golem.
Nah i dont think it makes the game easy but it indeed is very powerful!

When I first get in to hardmode, I almost always go primarily mage (simply because those weapons are easiest to get imo), but I also try to get the onyx plaster as well. I think it, the crystal serpent, and the cursed flames are among the best early hard mode weapons
Btw the onyx blaster got nerfed again its base damage is now 25 compared to the 52 we see in the video

terra blade shits on it surely, its really cool how you get near guaranteed hits, and i did use it a decent amount in OOA when betsy was moving crazy fast, but other weapons just get the job done faster it seems, more dps
Terra blade may have more dps but possessed hatched is a much safer option and is better than the Terra blade against something like the pillars, however in simple close up fights Terra blade wins by alot

I used the Onyx Blaster recently on a ranger playthrough, I love the explosion and the way it attacks, definetly a really good consistent weapon for Hardmode.
When I first started terraria as a completely new player, the Onyx Blaster was an incredible carry through the game
I was able to go from mechanical bosses to Lunatic Cultist with only this weapon and not a single ranger accessory or special bullets (I used Silver bullets cuz I didn’t know there were strong alternatives)
Granted, I was playing on normal difficulty, and back in 1.3 when it’s damage was even bigger. But that should still show how op this single weapon is even today

I think because of bullet upgrades also being a thing it doesn't quite hit the overpowered status. It's great for cc, but the spread gives it issues at range, which I find to be quite noticeable on the twins. Compare it to demon scythe, which is available pre boss and can carry you to hardmode for example, or another notorious op weapon the stormbow, and it's not so much that the weapon is op, it's more that it makes good use of the upgrades you can get.
I remember when 1.3 first came out on xbox, I instantly went to the desert when it started raining as I hoped it would be a sandstorm but was quite upset that it wasn't, and I remember taking way over 50 mummies just for 2 shards
You should do a zenith review, it’s extremely underrated
i have the same thoughts about the saugine staff for summoner. it can easily carry you to cultist where then you can upgrade to the stardust dragon
Onyx Blaster has always be my go to weapon when entering hardmode, but i don’t think it is that overpowered, when doing a full ranger run i always go for the Onyx Blaster, but it’s not the most overpowered early hardmode weapon, i would argue that the Daedalus Stormbow is WAY more overpowered.
Still i sometime keep the Onyx Blaster with chlorophyte bullet up until EOL or Moonlord (depending on which i do first)

The most overpowered early hardmode weapon is the orange zappinator. Seeing as it has a chance to literally do 100k damage a second
While also having an amazing base damage of 100 and a relatively cheap mana cost. It can carry you up to post golem if you get lucky enough
Of course, this is all factored in with RNG so I can't truly call it overpowered due to it's inconsistency
You should do a video on the Seedler, very cool melee weapon.
This weapon is easily my goto first weapon for hardmode, easy to get and reliable. I don't use it much for bossing as there's better options in terms of dps but for anything else, the onyx blaster has you covered
I've been using this in my current playthrough and honestly it completely carried me through the mechanical bosses
Especially twins
Because it's hard to hit them in mobile
i never knew there was different ways to play terraria until like a year ago. i was always told to get the fiery great sword and the jungle sword, meramasa and the other sword for the nights edge then get broken hero blade and true nights edge get true Excalibur then terablade

Can confirm is op, beat duke fishron expert mode pre-mech using this, a dart pistol to apply ichor, the queen slime mount for mobility and the sergeant united shield in order to "not sugarcoat" the third phase.
On my first playthrough i got to a point in the game, i think pre plantera where i didnt know what to do.
I ended to going to my guide and seeing this. I thought it looked cool so i made it (taking a while to get the shards) and it was incredibly useful
usually i pick a class and go with it throughout the hardmode and sometimes the entire game, so i dont usually use onyx blaster that much, if i were to go ranged id definitely get the clockwork assault rifle and simply get a stormbow(with holy arrows of course) from a mimic and destroy the destroyer so i can use a crystal bullet/megashark combo to easily take out the other mechs as well as plantera
Go to method for me is get the shotgun, get the few souls and shards for the onyx blaster, use that to protect me while harvesting hardmode ores and the frost core from ice golems, use the onyx blaster and frost armour to farm out angry snatches to get the Uzi and have the 2 best early hardmode weapons quickly available post WoF (also use Uzi or Onyx to get the Daedalus)
As someone who ironically never went for any shotgun weapons in Hardmode except for the Tac. Shotgun, I crafted this thing since I was drilling up sand, and figured I'd give it a shot. In my findings, it's more of a tank buster, instead of crowd control, and it's semi balanced due to the range of the projectile. My only nitpick with it is since it's a literal upgrade to the shotgun, it should fire at least 5 pellets, and weaken the onyx projectile a bit. Since it does deal great damage, but wasn't as much of a carry as I'd hoped in my ranger playthrough. but great vid overall. Subbed.

I like using the Onyx Blaster if I'm taking on Duke Fishron pre-mech, as it deals tons of damage per shot, especially if all your shots hit
It's even good for the third phase in Expert/Master mode, since Duke appears in bursts when dashing, allowing for quick hits while he dashes
And as a weapon in general, it's just awesome!
Exactly it does to much damage to Fishron using ichor or crystal bullets it honestly needs another nerf
It brought me right up to plantera, hands down one of the best weapons
Honestly, in early hardmode I preffer to go straight for the Marrow along with a quiver and make it a molten quiver.
Did it in my recent mastermode run with a friend.
I’d say it’s around the same DPS with the right equipment (maybe now if we say every projectile of the Onyx blaster hits, but realistically they are not gonna unless it is against the destroyer or larger bosses) and the fast arrows allows you to keep a somewhat goot distance between you and enemies, which is precious in master mode.
I love the Onyx Blaster, I use it till Plantera, as it gets much less powerful and overshadowed by much better weapons at that point in the game, I likely had my fastest Twins Fight with it ever, maybe only beaten by 1.4.1 Summoner.

Hey sockrteez I have a question. In some of your videos (like your horseman’s blade video) I see the weapon doing thousands of damage in one hit like 1000 damage crits. Is this a build or is this a mod or some kind of journey mode window.
What I like like about the onyx blasters is that it’s shots are so close together
Before the additions of Whips in 1.4, this was my go-to "filler" weapon as a Summoner.
Pair this with the Spider Summon and Armor (also super-quick to earn in Hardmode, just raid a spider cave underground, and farm your fangs), and you got a recipe for carry.

Seeing how there's an lot of weapons that are pre mech but can go to post plantera like stormbow(its still good with chlorophyte arrows) and dart pistol. It's fine, plus I hate how between plantera and cultist the weapons are replaced quickly.
Shotguns is general are really good, from the broomstick to the tactical, they never seem to be bad
Dude it's crazy that like no one I know actually uses this and it's so damn good I used it to beat every hard mode boss (except the lunatic cultist and moon lord)

I didn't even know this weapon existed untill I saw it in a terraria tutorial video, after that I've used it a lot but I never thought of using chlorothite bullets since I've never liked them since they're weak and expensive.
My favorite combo with this gun is with crystal shards and frost armor. Literally replaced torches for me in my JMM playthrough
i always use crystal bullets and frost armor combo too when using onyx blaster its amazing
if you use this as a close range weapon and pair it with the dart rifle with cursed darts for longer ranges your set for early to mid hardmode

I love using the Onyx Blaster. I did 3 play throughs and used one in each of the three. I 100% recommend it.
In the last part of the video how did you get the onyx blaster to shoot that much bullets?
Although I rarely go for the ranger, I usually get the onyx blaster as the first thing entering hardmode if I _am_ playing ranger and I use it until I can get the UZI or the megashark. I wouldn't say that it makes the game *too* easy, since ranger is already pretty easy compared to other classes.
It does similar damage to the mega shark despite being pre mech and easy to get, it is really strong.
On my pre 1.4 classic world this literally took me up to the Vortex Beater
i realy like the Onyx Blaster cuz funny shotgun, and Calamity really helped me like it even more with the upgrades
try doing one with the Stellar Tune!

Dude I did a a 2 player coop expert mode play and stellar tune was literally the only way I could beat betsy with pre-moon lord gear, although i don't know if i like razorspine or it more
I really like the clockwork ar it’s really fun to use and it can carry you to plantera with the right armor and accessories
I remember using the pre nerf version. The thing basically carried until the Pillars.
I used to craft it every time I played ranger in 1.3. But since it got nerfed in 1.4, now I simply use star cannon to kill destroyer in 10 seconds and change to hallowed repeater directly.
I just finished a mm ftw world and this weapon carried me to the mech bosses it is so good . Only reason i swapped it was cause uzi was doing a bit better against the twins

I think its more about how fundamentally Ranged class is best suited for terraria gameplay in general in compare of melee class for example. You keep distance from source of hurt unlike melee class (unless yoyo is involved) and dish out good amount of your own without any really restricting resource management unlike mage class. Guns are snappy, projectiles fly fast and targeting is quite easy. Characters in are not made to take many hits, not even melee tank classes even from extremely weak opponents and healing is extremely limited, so your best option is to not get hit in a first place.
I’ve done a full play through with this thing using it to kill every boss in the game moonlord takes a while and fishron/eol are simply hard to hit but it’s still good up to pillars
Perhaps you getting the Desert Key is a sign of the next weapon you should do a video on?

Could we ever see cursed vs ichor? Like everything. Bullets, arrows, tomes, etc.
I'm doing an expert mode ranger run right now (currently in early hardmode) and while the Onyx Blaster is very powerful, the Dart Rifle with Cursed Darts has done slightly better single target damage for me

Word of caution: If you use Explosive bullets, they override the dark missile projectile hitbox. Though I'm not sure if this was fixed as I have yet to use it again since 1.3.5
Only thing that makes Onyx Blaster Busted is because of the Onyx blast itself as its very fast and deals 2x the damage but has limited range compared to bullets but once again its shotgun so if you connect all shots it does quick work of enemies
another good thing is that in clamity mod the onyx blaster gets multiple upgrades that are good as the original
I did a gun only playthrough, and didn't know what to upgrade to after it, and then I got the vortex gun. Lol.
I just unlocked this thing today (I had to make a custom corrupted desert since it was hit by hallow instead of corrupt) and holy hell does it shred everything
my go to weapon for early hardmode is always the pearlwood sword, you do you i guess

This gun singlehandedly carry us against queen slime, twins, and Skeletron prime
i honestly prefer the dart pistol and rifle due to how they can adapt in situations and if done properly with cursed darts the dart rifle can turn the destroyer into a joke, i make him go up a one block wide wall as far as i can shooting straight up he died in about 30-40 seconds depending on probe rng
Always used Onyx blaster Till Golem then i went over to stinger for the pillars and used the Vortex beater with chlorophyte bullets on moonlord

Well, I started being ranger in my mastermode char in classic world runs, so to minimize risks I prefer to be as powerful as posible
I got the uzi first and till now has yet to find a single dark shard, not like I'm actively searching for it but still got the uzi fairly early.
The onix blaster is my go to weapon when I'm stuck on a boss
This with crystal bullets is awesome against the destroyer
I got a question… how at 2:58 do your shoot bullets at light speed? I’m not sure if its a journey mode thing or something since I’ve never played it before
