- Today we explore just how tanky you can get in Terraria. We look at how to maximize defense and damage reduction in order to take as little damage as possible from enemies. The fact that he managed to tank two hits from the dungeon guardian in expert mode blew my mind.
i would say it's a fever dream or heretic stuff or even a thing can't be done by a terraria developer but now i have seen it and am really surprised
he could write it in the title and get a lot of views but he dealt with it like it's not that big deal

Yeah for sure, I took a peak at some of the information on the wiki and there was a lot of new information there. I wasn't sure there was enough to talk about at first, but after looking at the wiki it seems that I was mistaken.
Haha yeah. Regen tank/summoner is one of my favorite builds to use just because it plays so differently.

Don't forget to Cross Necklace. Regen can start mid combat during invincibility period.

you can actually combine the paladins shield and the flesh knuckles to get the hero shield that not only gives more defence but also leaves another spot open for another defensive item

@@The_Eternal_King4941 true, but I mentioned the hero shield because it gives more defence than the frozen shield off the top of my head. Normally I would choose the frozen shield, but in this video he was going for highest defence so I thought hero would be more optimal ig
This was released about 3 months before 1.4, so those combinations didn't exist.

48 damage from Moonlord’s laser on expert mode is insane
2:51 - First time I watched this video, I was thinking to myself, "Who the heck is gonna use a Minecart in a boss fight?" Needless to say, I played on an Expert world and could not find a pair of Hermes'/Dunerider/Flurry/Sailfish boots at all. Now that world has about two arenas made from rails - one for Brain of Cthulhu, one for Eye of Cthulhu/King Slime. I now understand why someone would consider using Minecarts, but yeah, definitely more for damage output than defense. Still a great thing to know as a melee user.
Remember when I was killing Moon Lord w/ my friend for the 1st time in Expert. He went highest dps ranger while I tanked all the damage from Moon Lord with the beetle set, all kinds of potions for regen, defense etc. (I think I had literally almost every potion and food effect in the game), had campfire, heart lanterns, dryad close to me and was standing in honey for max survivability. Literally just tanked through without needing to use healing potion...

I remember doing a strat to beat moonlord in normal mode with some friends. My role was to just tank as much damage as possible and keep agro so moonlord would sit still so my friends could do all the damage. we never optimized the strat though. We did try it again in expert mode but it didnt work. I would like to see you elaborate onto it and use every regen buff/ damage reduction/ defense buff available and see if the strat would still be possible in expert mode. I wanna see it done properly :)
Have some of your friends be mages in specter armor so you constantly get healed while they damage the moon lord.

marcatehamburgers I used yo-yos to DPS :) and yes I was standing in honey with heart lanterns and campfires and a heart statue. And we all shared a summoner wand. There were 3 of us. You know what. That was a couple years ago. We might have only Half assed the expert attempt and for whatever reason stopped playing. I think one of my friends got too salty that I didn’t change the date and time on my computer to December for whatever reason. Didn’t think it was that big of a deal. Not important. I wanna see if it’s possible and I think it would make for an interesting video :)

Solar armour, warding on literally every accessory, worm scarf, Frost shield on Multiplayer when everyone is on red team, celestial shell, (Flesh knuckles + paladins shield), soaring insignia, celestial starboard and terra spark boots
(Last 3 for mobility but the prefixes help a bunch.)
Fighting tank builds as a sniper kit were scary times in pvp, normally any other kit takes one shot

It would be cool to see how tanky you could get with mods like calamity, thorium and spirit. It would probably get to possibly double that of vanilla
Edit: poitions from Alchemist npc mod lite are also pretty good for tanks there is a tank poition set you can buy
On calamity I got my defense up to about 274 💀🤣
I got about 180 defense with a decent set up pre moon lord using anti social mod (my accessories were all menacing and didn't give any defense from stats, so no extra defense from those)

Full dmg reduction set up can get Empress of Light to do ~10k in the day.
Sure you'd still die instantly but considering she does around 50k normally, that's a pretty big reduction.

There might be a way to be even tankier if I remember correctly the paladins shield will take 25% of damage from players on the same team as you so you go into multiplayer and get a second character with the same tankiest setup to have even more damage reduction
And the bearer of the Paladin's Shield gets infinite invincibility periods too.

@@ejhawkins086 I'm not familiar with your brand of English but how this works is that first your partner's defense applies to the incoming damage, you siphon away 25% of the resulting lowered damage, then YOUR defense applies to this damage, lowering it to tiny amounts. But the damage still triggers your invincibility period, giving you invulnerability for either 0.66 seconds during which you can't take damage again. With the cross necklace, you increase your invulnerable period to 1.33 seconds. If you have high regen, such as with Valhalla breastplaten you might even regen back the health you've lost, especially with a no damage period of over a second. On fire debuff takes away regen, so slap an Ankh shield on that character. Then add Master Ninja Gear (-10% of damage on average + when with wings and over non flat terrain, faster average horizontal movement than any mount except maybe wet Cute Fishron), Wings, Celestial Stone, Worm Scarf for max survival. Drop Worm Scarf if in non-Expert.

Defense. Damage reduction. (D)efense. (D)amage (R)eduction. DDR. Dance Dance Revolution. THIS WHOLE VIDEO WAS ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU CAN BUST A MOVE
In master mode you have 2 extra accessory slots contrast from the 5 slots you get from classic, one from playing on master mode and the other from defeating wall of flesh. These 2 accessories could include The shield of cthulu and a worm scarf (I don't know if this is the most effective set up) giving you an extra 2 defense and the 17% damage reduction from the worm scarf, additionally, the warding re-forge gives 8 more defense, making it an overall 11 defense. Another 5 defense can be added via the bast statue which is something you can get from fishing in a desert I believe.

With apotheosis and friends I reached 3.5k health,300+ def,and ridiculous regen that even scal cant overwhelm.That was super dumb
Normal mode: 1/2 Defense = how much damage is taken off from enemy attack
Expert mode: 3/4 Defense = how much damage is taken off from enemy attack
But enemies do 200% dmg in expert mode!
Eg - If an enemy does 40 dmg while you have 10 defense, you lose 35 HP in normal mode
But, in expert mode, the same enemy does 80 dmg, you still have 10 defense, you lose 72.5 HP.
So in short, expert mode does more than twice the dmg easily. The worm scarf becomes pretty much necessary and will take up the 6th accessory slot pretty much till end game.

@@Goat-np9rs I found that only partially true for me. I'm a console player, meaning that my view range isn't as big as PC. Dodgng moonlord is pretty much impossible to dodge since he has few cues for what attacks he'll use, and its hard to use specific dodge tactics for each attack when you don't know which one itll be until its already happening.
I would love to see an updated version of this!
1.4 TIP: combine the flesh knuckles and the Paladins shield to make the hero shield, and also the frozen shell and another paladins shield to make the frozen shield. The hero shield increases defense by 10, making it better than the flesh knuckles. Also, the frozen shield frees another slot. For the extra slot Equip yet another flesh knuckles rather than the paladins shield because it has two more defense.

for part 1, theoretically because in classic, defense reduces damage by half the number, and in expert by 3/4 the number, you could use the solar helmet for the set bonus and have the same effective armor as with the cholorophyte mask

also factoring an endurance potion and with the 7 slots of master mode ASSUMING that the damage test is on normal mode damage but there are 7 slots you'll get at least 8 defence from warding and then you can get a worm scarf to reduce damage by 17% and something like the hero's shield which gives 8 defence (I think) so we have the beetle armour build with three beetles and im not going to do the math but considering expert mode was 48 im guessing normal would be 24 (2x damage is dealt in expert mode)

In newer versions, flesh knuckles have an upgrade (combine with Palladian Sheild or power glove), turtle shell would be a frozen sheild (Palladian sheild) and there are two other slots to play with in master mode, so I think that the best defense would be as follows (in master mode)
Solar armor
Endurance potion
Iron skin
Exquisitely stuffed buff
Beast statue (desert temple thing)
Dryad blessing
Worm scarf
Ank sheild
Frozen sheild
Hero sheild
Palladian sheild
Flesh knuckles
Hero glove (flesh knuckles and power glove combined)
For added tanking:
Regen potion
Honey
Life force potion
Heart lantern
Campfire
Heart statue on timer

Even though armor gets a buff in expert mode, it still doesn't keep up to the damage increase of enemies
The flat damage reduction from every armor point goes up to 0.75 from 0.5, while all enemies get a x2 or even more buff to their damage
So yeah, damage reduction is the way to go, especially in the endgame with higher damage numbers, wether it's expert or normal mode
fun fact: if you have an app or whatever that generates items (example being plug for terraria if ur on mobile,) you can get an extra 12 defense by spawning in the armor pieces with the “warding” buff on them, which isn’t normally possible

Keep in mind the amount of beetles changes the damage reduction from 45% to 15% however solar is a constant 30% no matter how many spikes are on the shield, since they take the same time to recharge, if you are hit so often that you cannot build up to 2 beetles, solar is better. Even at 2 beetles it's still 30% just like solar.
melee class gets the highest defense and some pretty op "melee" weapons but summon gets the lowest but it has terraprisma which is actually surprisingly competitive with the zenith and then mage is the middle child pretty good damage and good enough defense ranged on the other hand has some insane dps but its very specific and most of the time you have to give up a helluva lot of defense or something good for that extra damage
if you used berserkers glove you would have an extra 12 defense instead of the 7 that the flesh knuckles gave you

You should do an updated version. With the flesh shield and stuff. The combination of tje paladins shield and flesh knuckles. Also have another person nearby and have THEM with a paladins shield to absorb and additional 25%. Also use endurance potions for 10% damage reduction
this was probably before it existed but you can now combine the frozen turtle shell and paladins shield for another accessory slot you could use

@@stellar702_ well I don't know what pre beta versions you play because when I tried overhaul with a few big mods it didn't crash on me.

I did that once, had 2 mods that just multiplied HP and damage of every mob. I wound up starting a world with full adamant armor and would still be 2-3 hit by green slimes xD.
I had a noob friend join me for that session too, he didn't want to cheat late-game armor in so he only took an adamant spear. He would just be one-shot by everything and we struggled to get into our house without being killed.
On a brighter note, it was SO hard... That he actually got fairly good at dodging!
We only played that one session though, it was just too painful. I'm not sure I ... Screw it I'm rebuilding that pack!

Hard, Harder Terraria (these 2 just multiply HP and Damage)
The Result? Blue Slime: HP: 283 DMG: 126 Armor: 18 Damage Reduction: 1.35
Blue Slimes have a chance to split into smaller blue slimes on death, especially if it takes multiple hits to kill them (my starting Sniper Rifle+ShadowFlame Mod)
The smaller slimes can split up to 2 more times into smaller, then *even smaller* blue slimes, all with incrementally weaker stats
Eye of Cthulhu: 108,000 HP; 260 DMG
Cheat Sheet doesn't feel like a cheat sheet anymore.
Did I mention that I start in Hardmode without similar armor or pickaxe?
The destroyer should be renamed to the annihilator in masochist mode.
Also tanking hits by just getting hit and healing by lifesteal via vampire knives or better being Spectre armor with the hood and a fast firing magic weapon being most commonly razorpine

I hope so, the testing is basically done (just a couple post-moon lord bosses left) and that is what takes the most time besides editing. There's a pretty good chance I'll have it ready for next weekend.
Balls to the wall damage, the highest number you can produce... Would love to see what combo of increased damage and crit percs you would use. The max i gott is with the sniper at 3k
Something with the solar armour is that with the set bonus with shield reduces the damage taken to
Damage reduction is also better against big damage while defense is better for chip damage, so the survivability kinda depends if your fighting a boss or an invasion also

In 1.4 there's a new accessory,the frozen shield. It combines the paladin's shield and the frozen turtle shell

this would be great to use with a summon, so you can survive for long periods of time while your summon does damage over time

All this has taught me is that the changes to defense and extra accessory slot from expert mode falls just short of compensating for how much more damage stuff deals.

This video reminds me of the fabled tortoise shell that gives 35 defense. I'm pretty sure equipping that would help this build even more.
in journeys end (1.4) there is a new statue that gives you +5 defense. i would like to see a part 2 :)
You should remember that theres also a potion for defense, and a certian statue that u can find in underground desert which boosts ur defense by 5 if ur near it, i have it and its quite nice

you can craft the paladins sheild with flesh knuckles for more defence and you can still use the flesh knuckles and the palidins sheild by itself

Instead of ankh shield im pretty sure you can use berserker glove (Not sure if it works with flesh knuckles), as well as replacing moon stone with ice shield (Also not sure if it works but defense should still be provided)
