  • Another video from Widewater in the Shoreham to Lancing area, West Sussex (UK).
Three daytime sessions in July (recorded on 10.07.23, 18.07.23 and 20.07.23) fishing with the hope of catching flatfish at Eastern Sands at the western end of Widewater. All three were short sessions, fishing a couple of hours up to high water, then a couple down. The first session produced mainly black bream; the second was fished the day after storm conditions, with coloured water and plenty of weed; the third a couple of days later when the water was clearing and there was plenty of action. Mixed catches were taken, but the target species did turn up in the first two sessions. Rigs and techniques employed are dealt with.

It's good to see someone catching on my local beaches, Michael! Hopefully we've seen the worst of the weed for a while. It was unfishable last week with rigs being dragged up on the next beach in 5mins ! Looking forward to the next adventure. 👍🎣🐟🐟🐟🐟

Yes the week can be a bit of a problem here, but not as bad as the Solent. Thanks as always Rob.

Great mixed fishing Michael, hopefully it’s a good sign catching all those small smoothounds. I know it’s not a guarantee of better smoothound fishing to come but I think it’s encouraging. Also nice to see that red mullet, such pretty fish & a species I’ve never caught. You can be relied on to bring us something different. Never know where you’re going to pop up next.

Thanks Chris - yes its good to catch something different. Time for golden grey mullet and garfish soon; however I'm busy with coarse match fishing events at the moment and not able to sea fish much. Will be back to Cardigan Bay in a few weeks though.

Another very informative and enjoyable video as always. I live in Christchurch and regularly fish the beaches at Highcliffe, Barton on sea and Milford but seldom catch plaice. In your experience do you find that plaice are more regularly caught from the shore as you head eastwards towards Brighton, Hastings and beyond? Also do you find clipped down 3 hooks rigs more effective than those not clipped down or do you do it mainly for casting efficiency? Any thought much appreciated.

Thanks. Yes - I haven't fished Highcliffe and Barton for a few years, since I've not had much success there and not caught plaice along that stretch. Shoreham to Brighton, Seaford and Eastbourne are where I normally head for to catch plaice. Short snood clipped-down rigs are so versatile, that they are my go to rigs for plaice and anything else that swims and if you need distance then clipping down is a must in order to streamline your baits for less air resistance when casting and keeping the bait fairly intact.
