I salt several different things for bait, in fresh and salt water. The process is exactly the same for all of them. Whether it's cheap smoked sausage or hotdogs for catfish, or minnows, shrimp, or sand fleas (mole crabs), I use kosher salt too, only I use containers that don't seal airtight. This lets your bait go full mummy. It will keep for.....a long time. Shrimp and minnows get tough as a piece of rubber tire, so the educated fish (mostly sheepshead) around the bridge pilings can't get it without getting hooked.

Salted shrimp I make takes 7-14 days and last a year in the refrigerator. I also buy the Wally World calamari rings and cut them into strips and salt as well use as bait by themselves or use them on a spoon for a trailer. Food coloring on the squid after salted then let dry again

Great video! It's evident that you work very hard putting these together. I live in Austin and love visiting Rockport. Now, the next time I visit, and salt my shrimp, I may be doing more than just feeding the piggy perch and hardheads since my bait will stay on the hook better!

A technique from my childhood 60+years ago. It does work but we used rock salt. Never heard of Kosher 60 years ago. Occasionally we could find non iodine salt but was rare. We did it to squid mostly and shrimp rarely. Good vid.

Shrimp are great baits--but what also works well is lobster. And don't neglect Fillet Mignon, cut it up in little baits. In general, the highest priced human foods make perfect fish baits. Just don't worry about the costs, you get fresh fish out of the deal.

@@texasbeachbum Transporting them in those bumper holder are brutal on the rods and reels. Rod tubes or socks at least, reel bags and don't put them together till you get to the water. If cleaned and lubed, salt rated reels should last years (When I'm able to fish on the coast, my rods and reels get a shower before I do). Whatever you do never endorse crap no matter how much free stuff a sponsor gives you.
