  • Ducati's new Monster 796 aims to be novice friendly, but enough of a buzz for more experienced riders. To see if it's really the best of both worlds, we test it against the two extremes of monsterdom - the easy-going 696 and rorty 1100.

So essentially the 696 is fast, the 796 is faster and the 1100 is the fastest. Geniuses.

Both the 696 and 796 are now being replaced with the 821, which makes more power than the old 1100. So the new 'bottom of the range' Monster is more powerful than the old 'top of the range' model.
Admittedly, sticking it in Urban mode, will take you back down to about the 696 level of power.

If you are going to make videos, PLEASE learn how to edit the audio. I spent most of my time changing the volume up and down.
So much so that I didn't pay attention to what was going on, on the screen and I don't know any more now that I did when I first opened the clip.

Hey thanks for replying. :) I am not fussed about speed, just a comfy bike for riding to work. Really like the look of the Monster and Triple.

@aluisious I see your point...not being able to test pilot a bike can be frustrating, although, it's very common at dealers. Best thing to do is wait 'till the dealership hosts a "demo day" where they have a whole bunch of demo bikes ready to roll for people to mess around with. I went on a demo ride today at the Ducati dealer and got to test out the Monster 796. Others were testing Streetfighters, Monster 1100's Multistradas, and even a few Diavels out there.

Ive had my 696 for 2 years now....and I want another Duc to put right next to it. Maybe a good used 848 might pop up with the 899 out.

Get a go on a street triple. Sweet music from the induction. Goes fast enough. A good honest naked. If you want more power the Speed triple is for you.

General feeling is if you already have a 696 its pointless to upgrade to a 796 as there is not enough of a jump up in performance etc, its a waste of money. Go up to the 1100. Or go for the older Ducati Monster M900.

hey MCN I personally like the format of these short reviews, if I wanted a full blown account I'd get a magazine or go to a website. I don't want to watch 10 minute videos of some guy rambling on about brakes and suspension and what else, and I don't think too many people would like that either.

Don't listen to the internet douchebag haters, motorcyclenews....I've been a fan since you've been posting videos, and your quality continues to improve. Keep taking honest looks at your product, and the upward trend will continue. Great resource, thanks for putting it out here.

@baneshield The 1100 is the only one with a colored stripe through the middle. The 796 has more color schemes with a red frame compared to the 696 which has more black frames, but they both have one color scheme in common (red body, black frame). Don't know about other visible differences.

Honestly, is there any real appreciable difference in power between the 696 and 796? What is the difference in the bikes besides displacement? I'm just left scratching my head, wondering what the point of the 796 is. Quick, fun video though. I enjoy the short and dirty review format for things like this

Monsters are very good low down but run out of puff quickly, have poor steering lock and Dealer servicing is stupidly expensive and its also a lottery as to whether your local dealer is a good or a bad one. Tho do servicing yourself and costs are much more acceptable as the general service parts are on par with yamaha, honda etc.
Street Triple is proven and better all rounder, better to live with day-to-day for sure.

That said...the Duc is expensive to maintain. If that is a problem, get a Japanese bike. They're fine motorcycles and are cheaper to maintain.Think SV650 for a first bike.

    |I can't be bothered watching it again but I am pretty sure the noob said he wanted the 1100 (no surprise there, as he probably would have felt a bit lame saying the 696 was best for him). Coming to an Accident and Emergency Department near you soon.......

  • @psittacid
    @psittacid 11 ปีที่แล้ว

The Ducati has ABS available, the Street Triple does not. I looked at both, but really wanted ABS. I recommend it, especially for new riders. I have over 300k km on bikes and ABS was near the top of my priority list. How long do you want to ride? Other than that, the Triumph is a great bike.
The Triple behaves more like a 4 than a twin. Look at the powerband - the Ducati's power is more where I use the motor, the Triple makes it up high. I'd rather have a bike with grunt than a screamer.
