Ducati Monster S2R 800 First Ride & Review! A Classic Italian Monster!

  • This is my first ride and review of my 2006 Ducati Monster S2R 800. This is a classic Ducati monster with the iconic frame-on body design with the single-sided swingarm. I give you my initial thoughts on the exterior styling, how it handles street riding and an overview of its performance. With over 77 horsepower coming out of the V twin-engine, this naked sports bike has a lot of power for the street, with the agility to take turns into the corners with ease. They don't make motorcycles like this anymore, with little to no electronics, it is just a classic motorcycle riding experience with an Italian flavour that everyone would love.

I'm a Monster fan...this is no secret. I have 2, both from 2003 (a 620, and a S1000). I rode the 620 across the USA and back, it was amazing. I'm 5'8 and you're 5'9, so we're probably having a very similar experience on the road. The riding position is one that fits my frame best. Speaking of the frame...this is what made the Monster what it was...without it now...ugh...makes me weep.
Your bike looks great! If you wanted to open up the look of the rear, I think those passenger rearsets are only held on by 2 bolts each. Removing them would def open up the rear end. I also removed my rear fender which gives a more impressive view of the rear tire...but yours has that shorty fender, so probably no real difference in removing it. Plus...water up your backside on a rainy day wouldn't be fun either!! LOL!!
Power on the Monster is awesome because it's allll torque. Off the line, the Monster is one of the funnest bikes to ride either around town (as it was intended) or through twisties. The V-Twin is really what makes the Monster sound amazing.
These classic Monsters are rarely seen on the road, that alone makes them more exclusive and you got a fair price considering how good of shape it's in!
    Ride safe and have fun!
    -David

Great point on removing the passenger peg something I'll do ASAP this weekend. I couldn't be in more agreement with you on all of this it's truly such a special bike and the frame is what it makes it iconic so it's sad that that is no longer the case on the new ones

I got my 2005 S2R 800 a month ago, although 18 years and with 39000 km old it looks like new. Like you said 77HP is more than enough for street riding. Paid around 4,200 € for it which is reasonable. fell in love with the monsters when I made my motorcycle driving licence in '92 but could not afford one at that time. Now a dream has come true.

I am the original owner of a 2005 Monster S2R 800 just like this one. I rode it as a weekend toy until 2008 when I became a parent. I did the “tail chop” mod, Fast by Ferracci titanium mufflers, the Ducati “udder eliminator” headers, CRG bar end mirrors and LED tail light with integral turn signals. It has 15k miles on it and I haven’t ridden it since 2008. It’s going to need a lot of work to get roadworthy again - flush fuel tank and lines, probably replace fuel injectors and pump, the 12k service (timing belts and valve adjustment), replace tires, chain and sprockets and a thorough detail. Likely will also need to service and modify the suspension to suit my 15 year older (heavier) body and get all new riding gear as well. What a beautiful machine!

Just like Ducati NYC i have a 2006 620ie Monster. Mine has Termis which sound awesome, his has Mivv GPs which also sound great. The Monster is such a cool bike and as my first real bike the 620 has more than enough power/torque for me. At $5k for mine with only 20,000Kms when i bought it, to me the bike was a bargain. They are supremely durable, Ducati NYCs now has 56,000 miles on the clock and it’s still going strong. I am 6,1 and i don’t find my Monster too small for me. It feels just right. Enjoy your 800, she looks sweet.

Lovely bike. I think i have it's clone. Bought it 1 month ago but ive owned 2 other Monsters a 1999 750M and a 2001 S4 Foggy. This S2r looks just like mine except i keep the windscreen on mine. The previous owner was the Mexico City Desmo club organizer and obviously took very good care of it. Its got all the carbon fiber era correct like front and rear mud guard, belt covers, and a few others all ducati performance parts. My favorite goodie it came with was the Arrow exhaust and it really sealed the deal for me. The sound is just brutal. Very deep and rewarding. Coming off a Streetfighter V4 i can tell you that 99% of the time the torque is going to be enough on the S2R. The V4 around town isnt going anywhere you arent. And like you said, this bike is all you buddy. Feel like locking up the back brake? You got it. Feel like downshifting and revv matching? You can do it too if you can do it! This bike is docile but its also not going to make you feel like a fast bro with something to prove. Id recon its more of a Porsche 911 from the 80s and 90s. Theyre fun and coveted for a reason.

The new Ducati Monsters are an abomination compared to the beauty that is the classic monsters all the way up until 2008 with the end of an era with the s4rs.
Just look at the 2021 monster, it's such a boring, bland and unoriginal street fighter styled bike. It looks just like any other bike by yamaha, suzuki and bmw
