  • In this video Publisher Tim Esterdahl visits with a ASE Master Mechanic to install a PPE Oil Pan, a Transmission Fluid Bypass Valve and check the transmission fluid in the long-term tester 2023 Chevy Silverado 3.0L Duramax diesel truck. This new oil pan holds more oil which should eliminate any concerns about oil usage.

Medical Doctor here (who loves engines): I would highly recommend that you guys use PROTECTIVE EYE GLASSES during this type of job. I have treated (or, even worse, eviscerated) dozens (and dozens) of perforated ocular globes. Always the same history: “I was just removing the suspension (pan, differential…) as I always do, but this time the bolt (coil, screw, oil…) just exploded on my face”. Some facial scars can make the talk way more interesting at the nearby pub. But, losing one eye, on a completely preventable happening, is an experience I am sure that none of you want to gamble into.

Being that the oil pick-up tube isn’t any lower, I don’t see how the extra 2 quarts helps with oil consumption. It seems to me that it would only help extend oil life between oil changes. With the amount of work it takes to install, I’d rather carry an extra quart and add as needed.

Tim, if you are into aftermarket parts you should check out VIN Specific Engineering located in Bennington, NE. They sell what they call a fuel system saver for the LM2, LZ0 among others. This unit replaces the fuel filter and filter housing with two filters, a water separation filter and a sediment filter. I think they retail for like $599 and is a DIY project. For me the PPE oil pan and full flow devices are overkill and unnecessary. My tranny runs a consistent 199 degrees which is what the GM engineers designed it for. My LZ0 doesn’t burn oil, that issue is way overblown IMO.

It doesn’t increase cooling capacity really either. What it can do is extend interval between changes, as there’s more oil to be contaminated. The only way you’re lowering oil temps is a larger heat exchanger.

I’ve researched as many forums as I can find. It’s not uncommon. I also just added about a cup of coolant to top off. People have said they found very small leaks all the way to having their trucks at multiple dealers and them not finding any loss of pressure or any signs of a leak. I have a gravel drive but park in the same spot and never anything. I’ve looked everywhere I can see and don’t find anything. I also sadly do not trust dealer mechanics either so I don’t really want to drop it off for nothing. I constantly monitor it and have a bumper to bumper 150k warranty so I just keep looking to see if anyone has narrowed it down in the mean time. I had a dealer mechanic tell me to just open the cap and it’ll rise. Sure it will if your checking it warm when you’re not supposed too. Sucks that I can’t trust them cause I’d realllly like to know what this is. Some people say it’s from regen but I don’t believe that’s the case. It’s definitely a coolant odor. Truck never runs hot. Most of my trips are back and forth to work. Country roads at 55-60mph with very little stopping and 45 miles each way. Maybe @pickuptrucktalk can dig deeper into this somehow. Very first time I noticed the smell was when I brought it home. Bought it with 9,000 miles on it. Supposedly the guy traded this in for a 22 6.2 Denali for all the new features. I’d love to get to the bottom of this

Ford uses a similar oil pump belt arrangement on the 2.7 EB and 5.0 V8 in F-150 applications and the hours of labor required to replace that belt turned out to be higher than what is required for the belt service on this engine. The only downside I have seen is that the access cover on the rear of this engine requires a special tool for aligning the cover to ensure the rear main seal won't leak.

The dipstick doesn't need to be longer. It measures the oil at the same point the old oil pan had it at. All the oil pan is doing is holding more oil meaning IF oil is consumed, the dipstick will still show the oil level is good. If the oil is low, it will read low. The new oil pan isn't any bigger than the old one. Just engineered and designed better to hold more oil.

I think not checking, or having to check the oil on a regular basis is more of a convenience than a huge benefit
Another major problem with the factory pan is that when you drain the oil during an oil change you’re leaving approximately a half a quart of the dirtiest oil inside the pan so you’re really never changing the oil. The PPE pan fixes this problem.
