    So grateful for this review! Was afraid my stereo arrived broken because I couldn’t adjust angle of head unit. Didn’t want to force it in case there was some sort of release button I wasn’t seeing. After watching you adjust yours in the video I decided to get a little forceful, and voila! It finally moved! 😃 You’re aces HWR!

      Thanks for watching. I don't know if I'm the best person to be copying when it comes to force though, I've broken so many plastic clips and trim pieces on my car from yanking and pulling while being impatient.

    I'm digging mine so far! Everyone says audio quality during my phone calls is good using the mic it comes with. Only issue is if I play songs via Bluetooth from my phone it sounds like trash. Android auto sounds fine though. I haven't tested other devices so I'm not sure if it's the phone or head unit that's the issue. Thumbs up for being a Polyphia fan!

    Thanks for this review. I saw this show up on Crutchfield but I couldn't find many reviews on it. It looks nice but I am more concerned over sound quality than a large screen and I couldn't find much information on that and how it compares to Alpine, Kenwood/JVC, or even Sony. Thank you, you saved me some time. I appreciate it.

    Nice review! I’m thinking on getting this stereo when I purchase a new Camry in the near future.
    I was curious about something; do you know if your phone’s EQ settings get reset whenever you plug it into the stereo?
    For example, I always keep my iPhone music EQ settings in ‘Rock’, but whenever I plug my phone into my current stereo, for some reason the stereo resets my phone EQ setting to ‘off’ and I have to go into settings every time to set it to ‘Rock’ again.
    It’s a minor thing, but I’d like to know if this stereo preserves the current settings your phone has because it has gotten tedious having to do that every time I start my car.
    Thanks

    I’ve seen this unit in the store and these Boss units are the same as their sister company SSL. They appear to offer good performance and value for the money. One thing that concerns me is the really glossy screen. I could see a lot of reflection in your video. In actual use, do you find the screen easy to read both in daylight and at night? Also, will the screen dim pretty well? I think I read that even though it’s dimmest setting it’s still pretty bright. And finally is there a way to actually turn off the screen for night driving without turning off the unit, that is, just make the screen go black? Thanks and really good video

    Nice review. This is the only video I can find on this HU. Do you know if you can change the bootup animation or turn it off? I'm assuming after it's connected to the backup camera it will come on when you put the car in reverse. Would like to see this when you get it hooked up.

    • @HeWentRogue
      @HeWentRogue  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn't look like you can turn off the loading animation. It always loads with the Boss logo and then the disclaimer screen pops up asing to "Accept" but you don't have to click it, it goes away on it's own pretty quick and boots into the radio.
      I installed the backup camera. It comes up on when you go in reverse and you can also click the button while driving and see what's behind you (if you hook it up with constant power)

      I found better sound quality and bottom end with the oem head unit than the BOSS. Looking at its amp board and components I think they were very optimistic in the promoted RMS rating. Installing a 5 channel amp and replacing all speakers so hoping it will shine when not using its onboard amp

    Did you connect the parking brake wire or did you do the parking brake bypass?

    • @ryanl8340
      @ryanl8340 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I initially just grounded the green wire (works on most head units, or well it used to LOL), but unfortunately it looks like in needs a pulsed signal of some sort. The bypass I got (axxess one since it's a name brand the axxess steering wheel control worked well), but that doesn't seem to work all the time. On a forum someone mentioned that this one here works with Boss units: www.amazon.com/DIYBypass-Parking-Bypass-Multi-Pulse-Motion/dp/B08FBGCGKW?tag=slickdeals&ascsubtag=626ca4469c8a11ebaa32fae05afd5f940INT That one is a multi-pulse one which is what I believe this thing needs.

Just ordered this bypass you suggest, will try to install and see if it works.

    Hey. I'm trying to get an idea of what I should be paying for a shop to retro fit one of these into my 2015 Honda CRV. The auto sound shop said $1100 ish since there's the cost of the screen, the honda specific mod kit, anew rear camera since "the wiring is different" from the original and of course labor. I'm curios if this all sounds lagit and reasonable. I have to frame of reference. thx!!

If you picked up the version with the 3.5mm jack also, you just need an inexpensive. Female 3.5mm stereo to male Left & Right RCA cable to feed that into the audio input of the head unit. Granted it may not get used much unless someone has an old school MP3 player / phone. .... they might want to feed into your system. Might as well have the option. @@HeWentRogue If he does a lot of night time rural driving like I do, the screen is a tad to bright on the lowest setting. Turning the gamma down for the night setting does help slightly. Also noticed a bug where whatever you set the brightness level for night, the day brightness eventually changes to the same. The head unit remembers the appropriate gamma settings though. Must be a bug, one that will probably never get fixed unfortunately because I don't see any firmware available for any of their previous units on their site.

    • @ryanl8340
      @ryanl8340 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you look below, I kind of have the same problem with this one. May not be quite as bad, but still a little annoying on a dark road at night. There's a few workarounds though (besides removing the display). Turning the gamma down helps slightly. Using an app that has darker colors also helps a little (noticed you said car play but I use poweramp for android and having that screen on rather than the navigation helps). Also you can select the background if you're going to just use bluetooth at night (think there were 4 options) plus I believe that you can change the brightness of that background which helps a little bit as well. Finally, you can just click on the clock (upper right on the display) and then it will show nothing but the date and time on a black screen in the center. Lot of bang for the buck if you can get this from autozone for $230. They only seem to have them at the larger Autozones BTW.
