****Note to anyone installing backup cameras. If you need to drill through metal, be sure to add a bit of touch up paint to the drilled area. This will rust when it is left bare. If youre going into plastic youre fine. Great video guys!!
Pro Tip: lots of old Toyotas have cruise control built in, even the base models. The difference is that they dont install the cruise buttons if you didn’t pay for the Add-on . So what you can do is just buy the cruise control sticks. I did this with my friend’s 2008 Yaris. Literally pop out the cover and screw in the stick and plug it in. The Dash already had the indicators and everything. The part is only $10 and its been working for 12 years now.
This is also true for heated seats sometimes. I have a 2008 4runner Sport that didn't come with heated seats but still had the connectors in the seat, so you could buy the OEM seat heaters for like $120 and install it yourself instead of paying much more. The base trim didn't have the connections, it was only the ones who had power seats.
Some models require you to run a single wire from the back of the clock spring, to the ECU to enable cruise. Still cool though, that it can be so easily done with most models.
My 79 celica gt had cruise control... by that I mean it had a lamp chain you clip around the throttle pedal when you go down the highway. Never used that good old cruise chain... and I'll never use one in any other car either (actually half of the cars I've owned have had cruise control, and I STILL refused to use it, my foot is more fuel efficient)
@@henlohenlo689 i don't recommend hooking anything high power through cigarettes' lighter socket. I got multiple cars that failed to start after a bit of time from such wiring.
Car manufacturers approach to infotainment systems have always been mind boggling to me. Like they built and tested the car itself to perfection through months or years of R&D and millions of dollars, but then had the intern design and build the infotainment system with the pocket money he had left over from his birthday. The amount of expensive cars I've seen with dogshit quality reverse cameras or with slow as hell computers is too damn high.
Fun fact, most of Automotive OEMs DOESN'T make their own infotainment systems be it Software or Hardware. They just tell some tier 1 suppliers what they want such as specs (roughly) and a very handsome payment of money for the Tier 1 for them to go ham with it.....or just cut as much corners possible to make the units as cheap as possible.
Its because they aren't software companies and have no idea how much capital and manpower is required to make software on the same level of quality as their cars.
they do it on purpose to save money, they're not stupid. If they have to produce a million cars and can save 100$ on each by making shitty infotainment that's a 100million saved (the price of the car will be the same)
I love Plouffe's attitude during this entire video. He doesn't need some fancy new car knowing that his 20 year old one still runs fine, he clearly appreciates the upgrades he's begin given, and even when things went wrong he was quick to make sure Linus didn't feel bad, like with the drill bit scratching up other parts of the frame or the dashcam screen getting hidden.
My dad was in the same boat with his 20 year old pickup. Over a quarter a million miles on it, constant stress from tugging a trailer loaded with stuff and the boat (separately of course lol) and the cost to fix what's wrong would be far less than that of a newer truck (think it was like 60-80k for a modern model). After paying a mechanic 4k for each rebuild of his transmission (he got two due to their incompetence in "forgetting" to refill the transmission fluid the first time and sabotaging the junkyard trash they swapped on the second, after marking as a basic steel and clutch replacement) he paid about 10k for new performance drums, a rebuild kit, tools to assemble the transmission and install it... came out to 20k or so for the full cost of fixing his truck on his own... engine needs work, but transmission is basically finished. Should last another 50k miles easy (likely until the engine starts having enough problems to need to take it apart and fix).
For the rear view camera - instead of drilling a hole you can get a replacement enclosure for the number plate light with a spot for a camera. They cost maybe $4 and its a non-destructive solution!
I love that you guys are advocating for upgrading the vehicle you drive, instead of dumping it and getting a new one (which some people can't afford) just because of the lack of tech. I've personally installed head units in my vehicles since I was 15. It looks better, sounds better, gives you the option to add more tech, and (probably most important) is the perfect opportunity to spend an afternoon with friends. Doing a project like this with friends is not only easier, but it gives you an excuse to spend hours bonding & having fun. While at the same time, it isn't some physically demanding workload, that your friends will avoid. Just look at how much fun was had in this video. You all did a great job on this one!
I always wonder though, isn't this only possible for cars with no infotainment at all? Afaik, most cars since 2010-ish come with some form of infotainment that enables you to set vehicle settings (lane assist, speed warning etc.) for example. Can head units be made compatible with that? Or how does it work?
I like the $5k upgrade videos, but this is way more helpful to most folks. "hacking" a Bluetooth receiver into your cars existing CD changer is a game changer.
just put ipad mount and a ciggerette lighter that wifi connects to wifi audio to the car through ciggerette lighter. all the wired stuff is not necessary. no need to install anything into the dash. just cig lighter wifi to speakers of car and ipad and ipad mount. thats all thats needed. i own an old hyundai accent and no auxilery cable and broken dash stereo but i can still listen to any audio on my phone thriugh this method. saved alot of money not needing to install any thing on rhe car my phone is the switchboard. the cig lighter wifi costs like 20 bucks.
@@eemarko i mean bluetooth. old cars may not able play music from phone wirelessly but all it takes is a 20 dollar cig lighter wjich ur phone blue tooth connect then it connects to ur radio. then ur stuff on phone is played on car. like it creates its own radio station. ur connects with radio. ur phone controller. all the controls outside of radio are not needed as ur phone does it. this is why i think all the fancy dash radio install is not needed. these days we have phones and ipads. not mucj if any installs into dash are needed on older cars. thats my personal opinion. saved me 100s of dollars still can use my old cars music system well.
Really helpful to explore the potential of upgrading an old car rather than buying a new one. Using Android Auto and a dashcam genuinely upgrades the driving experience. Thanks for the brilliant step-by-step walkthrough.
Totally! I didn't even realize a retrofit like this was possible. Or at least, within reach of my general technical capabilities. I need to look into how hard it would be to get Android Auto in my Jetta! I wouldn't be totally surprised if there's one that just straight up fits my year model since it already has an LCD and is more than 10 years newer than the featured vehicle.
A tip to everyone for the backup camera. The better solution to use the camera when put in reverse is to connect the positive wire direct to reverse light, the negative wire in the trunk where is an bolt to the chasis to have the ground and change the setting in the Head Unit to show in automatic when the camera sent a signal to the unit, and with this every time you put the car in the reverse the camera show automatically in the unit
You want to wire the power to the camera to the ignition and wire the head unit to the reverse camera trigger and that will allow you to preview the camera as they did and also have it automatically come up in reverse
@@thepotato9331 In my experience, your method is different, I don't think the camera showup automatically when you put the car in reverse because the Unit don't know if the car is in the reverse or not, only if you connect the power direct to the ECU and you need to code the ECU, but if you connect the power of the camera to the reverse light, camera has power only if the car is in reverse and like this the Unit know when the car is in reverse
No this isn't ideal, you don't want the camera always powered, especially since many of them have lights on the for reversing at night which would be on all the time if it was wired the way you described.@@thepotato9331
@@thepotato9331 Only works on newer vehicles. My 05 Explorer had no reverse wire I could find and my dad couldn't find any reverse wire anywhere. My 92 doesn't have one and just a ground wire where the reverse goes into to ground the reverse lights.
My entire youtube feed is pretty much just car stuff, tech stuff, and music. Honestly if LTT starts doing more car content like this, I'd watch even more. I've never owned a new vehicle and probably never will buy brand new. Any way to upgrade quality of life in older vehicles, with tech pros' recommendations on products, is a win.

SONY must have changed up their UI for electronic products. I remember the Onion News Network making fun of SONY calling their UI a labyrinth maze of choices.. lol. Personally I don't have a problem with User Interfaces as long as the mapping for sub menus make sense.
I drove a box truck at my old job that had an add-on rearview camera wired that way. It worked, but the problem was sending power to the camera by shifting into reverse only did just that: send power to the camera and light the power button on the screen. So I would have to shift into reverse, turn on the screen, wait a second for it to boot up, and then I could back the truck up with it. And of course it died as soon as I shifted into drive, which at least on a box truck with God-awful rear visibility, I would've been happier if I could leave it on to watch for tailgaters.
@@OTE_TheMissilethat's how I wired all of the trucks at work. Power on all of the time. I can watch the back of the truck with the key off. I even use it to see if I'm clear to change lanes. I drive a 12'6" tall box truck with tandem axles. The box is 26' long.
I did this to my 2006 civic a few weeks ago. I bought my dad's civic and I will continue to do everything I can to keep this car, so many memories, and the handling feels as good as the first time I drove it.
As someone who already knows how to do upgrades/mods like a head unit. Im so glad LTT is showing people how to squeeze the life out of everything they own and enforcing right to repair in every industry 💪

Keeping older vehicles in use is arguably even more important that reusing & repairing old electronics. Good video. Hope for more thing along the same line.
I do tend to agree, but bear in mind that the vast majority of a combustion car's emissions are from the fuel it burns, so keeping older, dirtier cars going should have its limits. Car recycling is also much better established than electronics recycling.
@@armadillito Nah even factoring in the slightly higher emissions of a 20 year old car, keeping that vehicle in service still comes out well ahead in terms of environmental sustainability. Both building and "recycling" a car has a massive impact , best to avoid both as much as reasonable.
if people cared about emissions they wouldnt be putting entire industrial strain and coal burning practises on china. reducing emissions locally is not 'caring about the planet' when they just do it without all the regulations on the other side of the planet and in bigger ammounts. renewable energy does not exist.
LTT, this video has a great reception because it speaks and generally applies to the normal folk. If you look at retrofitting older tech or older hardware to keep up-to-date you'll have a great series on your hands. This was a great watch 😀
@@dimii27and probably a lot of people who, because of budget, drive „older“ cars without these amenities and would love to know how to upgrade their vehicles..
It doesn't tho. Very few people, especially very few people watching TH-cam are driving 20 year old cars. Android auto has been in cars since like 2016...

Probably worth pointing out that the base model cars tend to be easier to upgrade with these aftermarket mods compared to upgraded vehicles. The more features the automaker puts in a car, the more integrated everything becomes. That's especially true with head units with integrated / digital climate controls, and virtually all electric vehicles.
Absolutely, my car has the upgraded factory stereo and adding an amp was a pain in the B compared to my old car or standard stereo trims. Both 2005-06 but the current one is "luxury" so it's all fancy with it's can-bus.
I've honestly held out for oh so very long upgrading the head unit in my 99 grand cherokee because I absolutely LOVE the look of the thing but it sounds like ass. My audio used to sound great until my first OEM head unit died. Ever since then its been kinda crap.
Yeah you need the passthrough to get a full bass signal to the subwoofer or else the stock head unit rolls off the bass to protect the speakers. I have been using a logitech x540 for head rest speakers powered by 200 watt inverter maintained fan noise with coconut oil, jensen 900.1 sub amp, sony mex bt3100p, with audiobahn 12 inch subwoofer tuned to 32hz in a chevy volt.
@S_wali yes, that is what he was implying. He may be lying, but his username does have ville in it while the review is from Jerveryville. Its also pretty believable that a farmer would have a big old truck like an '05 2500.
You guys motivated me to do an upgrade overhaul to my car. I installed new speakers, amp, head unit with CarPlay and a camera and it’s like a whole new car! Next I’m gonna add a sub. Thanks for the video
Technically you should tap into the reverse light to power the backup camera so the camera activates when you put the car in reverse as opposed to having to manually toggle to turn on the camera.
As a car audio installer for 10 years I gotta say. Thank you for going with quality equipment. That makes the job so much easier and reliable. For the backup camera you should have removed the 4 bolts inside to pop off that trim and used the factory grommet to run the wire thru. Run an extra line with your camera wire so you can give your camera 12v but also tag into the cars reverse light and tag that into the radios reverse trigger. This will allow you to view the camera when you want but will also trigger automatically when you put it in reverse. Fuse taps are directional. You want to pull the fuse and figure out which is the input and output. The wire coming out of the fuse tap is the output side. Installing a fuse tap backwards loops whatever your tapping through the primary fuse then the secondary. Also, ground out the parking break line. It bypasses the safety features that allows you to watch movies and shit via usb or DVD while driving. Pioneer and alpine require a tr1 to bypass. If any of that is impressive then look up Imeastro by datalink. You can fully integrate dash cams, your cars ECU for any data points the engine has along with reading and wiping engine codes, integration of radar detectors, and more. Possibilities depends on vehicle.
Was with you up until "Also, ground out the parking break line. It bypasses the safety features that allows you to watch movies and shit via usb or DVD while driving. Pioneer and alpine require a tr1 to bypass." Watching movies whilst driving is just utterly stupid. @@Squirrelking4395It's not only that. A lot of menus and even Android Auto / Apple CarPlay will be blocked while you are driving, meaning you won't be able to change or move menus until you are at a complete stop. It depends on the headunit manufacturer and what they consider "safe" while driving, but I've had units where you can't even open the settings app until you are fully stopped. While you may disagree that you shouldn't be touching the infotainment at all while moving, tell that to every single car manufacturer.

Did this with my 2009 Honda Civic a few years ago. I was getting sick of not having features like Carplay, Navigation, etc and was thinking about upgrading to a newer vehicle to get these features. Decided to try a new head unit instead and I gotta say it really went a long way to improving my time spent driving. It's a shame that most modern vehicles integrate stuff like HVAC into the head unit so you can't just swap in a new one anymore without having to deal with a bunch of proprietary BS.
Yeah, my Subaru is like that. Will never be able to replace it, which is a shame because apparently spending over $30k on a car isn't enough money to get a processor faster than a potato chip. Seriously, that built in infotainment system makes a 1990 PC look fast and responsive.
@MTGeomancer what year is your subaru? I was able to upgrade my head unit. It just needs an additional module which does suck. All in all it cost me 900 bucks usd. But the model they showed is what I picked and I like it far more than the stock unit that came in my 2018 crosstrek
@@bubbledoubletrouble Most cars prior to like 2010 won't even have Aux(it was seen as a luxury addon in most cases). My 2008 GT Sport Golf head unit didn't have it. Ended up getting RCD330, which works perfectly with most VAGs. But To be honest, After years of modifying audio/head units in my cars, I found that the best way to get a good head unit is to ONLY go for legit products, like the Sony one or go for Replica products like the RCD330. Otherwise you might as well just get a bluetooth speaker and use that for audio and get a tablet or a secondary phone for the screen(or use your main phone + mount). Like I am talking really cheap.

it is nice to see someone doing driving for a video actually continuously looking at the road. just because you are filming a video doesent mean you endanger the people around you.
An alternative to drilling a hole through the trunk (and risking rust) is getting a camera that replaces one of the two license plate lights (and some have lights built in)
It's also fairly common practice to tap into reversing lights for backup camera power. Much shorter lead, and the camera only turns on when you put the transmission into reverse, which stops cameras with extra lights from staying lit all the time.

Do Hondas have a single main wiring harness for basically all models, to save on manufacturing costs? My Subaru had wires in the doors for tweeters not included in the lower trims, and so to upgrade to tweeters just meant buying a set and plugging them in. Also on that note, it's a shame they chopped up the factory connector in the dash, rather than buy a cheap adapter harness - because the factory subwoofers often are an inline plug setup, too.

Another bonus of driving older cars… they aren’t internet connected! I do not need, nor do I want a car that has cameras, microphones, GPS, electronic shift levers, accelerometers, steering servos, acceleration and brake control all connected to a computer that can receive OTA updates, brick itself, or be hacked. You're completely right about hiding the license plate. In Canada the only people that have access to personal details from a license plate are law enforcement and the DMV (ICBC) where we live in BC. Having somebody's license plate will do absolutely nothing for you if you're not police or a government worker. Canada went through great lengths to make sure it's like this. It's not like some states where it's a public registry.
In sweden, u can search any plate and it would tell u the history of the car, what date it was acquired, what date it passed inspection and what date the owner of the vehicle has been changed and so on it's quite helpful when u wanna purchase a used vehicle
@@Rudohardt yeah so here if you want to learn the history of a car you need to have a VIN number. And with that you can pull the Carfax.. If you want even deeper history on the car you will have to go to your DMV. In our province of BC, The DMV is ICBC and you can give them the VIN number to get an even more in-depth history on the car but you will need to provide a piece of ID and you will have to pay them, neither of these will tell you anything about the previous owners details, aside from their maintenance history. Canada has this type of stuff extremely locked down for privacy and security. Even with the police this is highly monitored. Like police officers here cannot just go and run a police check on people they know. Or the vehicles of people they know. They will get fired. It is extremely monitored even for police. It's a good system and it seems to work pretty good
@@Rudohardt I left a comment explaining more and it was deleted. I have no idea why... because there was nothing in the comment that could be misconstrued as rude or that gave any personal details. I know it was not LTT. So I'm assuming that TH-cam algorithm did this by mistake. So as I was saying here if you want a history report you can use the VIN number and check it with Carfax or go to the local DMV which in British Columbia is ICBC. That would give you a more thorough history. Neither of those options would tell you anything about the previous owner except that he maintained the car and it would give you the history. Canada has this stuff pretty locked down.
But surely people can clone the plate and run up tickets etc on your licence plate? It certainly happens in the UK. That is usually the major concern of not blurring.

Being a tech for one of New Zealand's more premier car audio workshops you guys did great in showing off quality products and the value inherently found in some cheaper models, but the drawbacks in that some can face premature failure. The ideal solution is to always go with first party branded options, the likes of Sony, Kenwood, JVC, Pioneer, Alpine, etc as they've been in the industry for years and work well. I would make note that some vehicles need harnesses that are much more expensive due to factory amplifiers and steering wheel controls but overall it's still a great way of getting an upgrade! Viofo dash cams are awesome, reliable and extremely well featured. There's a more premium experience in BlackVue for the app but overall the price of Viofo dash cams makes them far better if you're more tech inclined, the hardwire kit is essentially a no brainer to ensure that it records regardless of whether the vehicle is on or off. @Tuxicity Heya, who would you recommend in Auckland to do some audio and screen upgrades to a 2014 Lexus 450h, that don't break mechanical Warranty? Yep, my 2010 F-350 I bought at an auction for cheap needed a couple grand in mechanical work, but after that, I upgraded the multimedia to a new Kenwood double din deck, put in a HD reverse camera, took out the useless cigarette lighter to put in a USB slot for the multimedia and command start. It's been my reliable daily driver for personal use and work. Doing those small upgrades to bring some modern useful tech really put into perspective that I didn't need to spend $50k-$80k on a new truck when for less than a fraction of that with some minor upgrades, got me what I "actually needed."
i did all of this in my 1995 Golf. bluetooth, navigation, backup sensors, 2600 watts of sound, all LED lighting in and outside. all the modern stuff and almost NONE of the complications of new models.
Careful on the LED lights, some housings are not designed for it and is illegal to use. This is due to how it projects/reflects the light or because the lumens or color temperature is too high possibly damaging the retinas and definitely causing temporary night blindness for oncoming drivers. This issue is not just limited to aftermarket lights and has been the cause of pedestrians getting injured or worse, animal strikes, head on collisions, and t-bone collisions.
Great topic for a video! I'm quite supportive of this trend since it can make older cars feel so much more modern. But be aware that it's not always perfect! Some units may have a relatively long boottime that can feel awkward, some units may have annoying bloatware, and some units may have odd issues/limitations. Something we see happening here when switching the orientation of the rear view camera doesn't really work :( This is also the reason why I hope to see this community grow. There are some decent forums (like XDA Forums) where people post their issues and others may be able to find a solution/workaround, but these definitely could use some more enthousiasts! Overall I still enjoy my upgrades, but I hope this market grows and improves in the future!
I completely agree with this! I wanted to comment to share my experience. 2 years ago I bought a Pioneer 2600NEX. It’s amazing and I have no problems with it. The boot time as you mentioned can be slow. Sometimes I can listen to my music while connected to Apple CarPlay within 15 seconds of the car being turned on. Sometimes it will take longer. I have also done a subwoofer upgrade to my car and the pioneer headunit is amazing at EQ and turning the sub off and on. I’ve have the headunit for over 35K miles.
If you opt for the viofo dashcam, chuck £10 at the additional polarising lenses you wont regret it for night vision / evening glare edit: i also made the ,mistake of putting the windscreen camera behind the rear view mirror so bought the bluetooth incident save button attached to the dash which works flawlessly for incident saves. Whilst I'm offering advice I also bought the fuse power adapter which allows it to be powered from the fuse with a passthrough which if connected through an always on fuse slot allows for constant recording to allow for incident impact recording or timelapse recording. note:- mine is the previous version but no doubt still relevant points.
I highly recommend Viofo and even had a friend, who was in a crash and if it wasn't for the video. He would have likely lost in count because the other driver manufactured a totally feasible account of events but with my friend being at fault (accused him of speeding). The dash camera saved months/year of stress and the drivers insurance paid out all costs including additional claims for medical and loss of earnings and other items. £150 saved him £1000s and months/years of stress.
I am a fan of this. As someone who has taken part in doing “little” upgrades to their own car it’s definitely a fun side project. It’s cool to see that community is growing it would be nice to see it get more attention mainly stream for cooler products.
I did a head unit swap and backup camera upgrade for my 2012 Ford Escape. Absolutely worth it! Also I can’t say enough good things about my Crutchfield customer experience!
Hey, did you have the small 4inch display? I have a 14 escape and have that little screen and hate it. But the built in head unit seems like it would be awful to replace with something else
@@danemowris39 It depends on the car but you can find Dash kits for the more integrated infotainment systems if you want to get an aftermarket Head unit. but you could be restricted on the actual head unit size since ford uses a separate screen and processing module in the sync systems. This is fantastic to see. I put a new media console and speakers in my 2000 Toyota Camry 3 years ago. With only 120k miles, it was the best upgrade that I’ve been recommending to people with older cars for years. Great video for the common man today!
I literally installed the XAV-AX6000 on my 2013 Highlander like not even a week ago and I am so happy to see LTT showcasing this specific model. It is criminal how responsive this stereo receiver is!
Something to note is that generally its better to use a deutsch connector or other automotive specific wire joints than soldering. Itll probably be fine but solder joints have a tendency to not like large temperature changes and vibration.

For the seatbelt issue you had, rather than try to twist the cable in the attachment bit, just look at the bottom of the seatbelt where it attached to the pillar. You should be able to untwist the whole seatbelt by rotating the attachment bit.

The wifi signal reduces the audio signal compared to wired, which is the best connection. You could even get an aftermarket amp or equalizer and just plug the phone into the amp with a 3.5mm to rca splitter and use the phone as the deck if that is what you want to do.@@henlohenlo689
Its nice seeing my two interest clashing. Plus most of those negative reviews on the Samsung dash are more than likely from people mixing and shorting wires. Linus did a great job only thing I personally would have done different is use a proper wire connector instead of electrical tape since the adhesive will fail in hot summer conditions causing the wires to come loose and short. Other than that the ltt team did a great job and if you plan on doing this yourself make sure your are splicing the correct wires.
My sister and I both bought new cars around the same time. I got an 03 Nissan X-Terra, she got the 04 Civic. I drove that Nissan about 8 years and moved on. My sister drove that Civic for 10 years, and then my niece drove it another 8. Damn good cars.
I installed this units little brother, the XAV-AX4000, in my rig and I absolutely love it! The only features that it is cut down on is the HDMI jack is gone and it has a resistive screen but it's cheaper and still great. I really can't recommend these units enough!
Just a heads up for all those attempting automotive wiring, its best practice to use crimp connectors (with proper crimping tools - NOT just mashing it with a pair of pliers) instead of soldering. Your solders might be fine but a proper crimp will be more reliable and outlast them every time :)
You can change to DIN autoradio on most older cars and get the reverse camera also. If you like the car otherwise but engine dies or transmission, get a replacement from auto disassembly companies. That way you can get the car going for next 25 or 50 years. The problem with older cars is that safety system incompatibility with newer cars in crashes or you won't have so much protection against other dangers such as deers / mooses or if you just simply drive off the road.

I'd like to thank the team at LTT who worked on this video! I had to swap to a Saturn Vue 2009 when my Chevy Sonic 2014 died a week ago. I just installed the same Sony XAV 6000ax on it and wow! Thanks for the video. It was my first time playing with a car radio and it was fun. Intimidating at first, but fun!
Hey look at that! LTT delving into some car audio! As a DIYer who's installed countless car stereos over the years, this video is an absolute banger. My only note (as it's clear this video in particular wants to appear to the everyman)... Soldering can seem intimidating to some... as an alternative, simple wire couplers from home depot and a crimping tool are perfect for these sorts of jobs as well.
I recently got rid of my 2002 Civic but I did the same thing when I first got it and it made the experience inside much more enjoyable and comparable to a new car. It's definitely worth the expense if you aren't looking to get a new car, or your old car is just not going to die for a long time. Also, sound system installs are very easy in these cars. But the newer the car the harder it typically gets.
Yeah upgrading the headunit on my wife's 2005 Suburban was a royal pain in the rear. I had to buy so many adapter modules that I didn't have much money left for the head unit itself and had to compromise. But now she has navigation and bluetooth for music.

WHAT
I wasn’t aware of that one.
Edit: I just checked my 2014 Tacoma. It has it.

Facts
Fun fact, most of Automotive OEMs DOESN'T make their own infotainment systems be it Software or Hardware. They just tell some tier 1 suppliers what they want such as specs (roughly) and a very handsome payment of money for the Tier 1 for them to go ham with it.....or just cut as much corners possible to make the units as cheap as possible.
I absolutely hate that every car manufacturer besides bmw uses Touch interfaces what is wrong with the joystick thingy?

He also probably doesn't have a newer vehicle because he spends all of his money on custom keyboards and $1300 monitors for his PC lol. Priorities
It's one of the pleasures of having a car that is worth effectively nothing. Not having to care about dents or scratches
Totally. Some of these items may be a bit pricy, but it's still a drop in the bucket compared to getting a new car.
Yeah but let me show you how much shitter these features are in my porsche.
For the rear view camera - instead of drilling a hole you can get a replacement enclosure for the number plate light with a spot for a camera. They cost maybe $4 and its a non-destructive solution!
Please upvote this.
How do you get the power cable to it without a hole?
This, you still have to drill a hole for the wire. @@l3v1ckUK
from the same hole number plate gets electricity from. Back of the enclosure is basically inside the trunk and wires go inside the car.
Wo this is genius! Thank you!

For the rear camera, you should have hooked it up to the 12 volt power for reverse lights so it automatically turns on when you put it into reverse
That depends on if you want a backup camera or rear view camera. Some people may want to be able to view the camera when parked or driving.
That's true, but unless the head unit supports input switching when it receives power, you'd still have to click into it anyway.

Technically you should tap into the reverse light to power the backup camera so the camera activates when you put the car in reverse as opposed to having to manually toggle to turn on the camera.
Exactly, I honestly expected them to figure that out.
Possibilities depends on vehicle.

it is nice to see someone doing driving for a video actually continuously looking at the road. just because you are filming a video doesent mean you endanger the people around you.

Agreed! Let's Pimp Plouffes car!!!( I sure hope I'm spelling his name right, 😅)
Do Hondas have a single main wiring harness for basically all models, to save on manufacturing costs? My Subaru had wires in the doors for tweeters not included in the lower trims, and so to upgrade to tweeters just meant buying a set and plugging them in. Also on that note, it's a shame they chopped up the factory connector in the dash, rather than buy a cheap adapter harness - because the factory subwoofers often are an inline plug setup, too.
Invite Seth from Berm Peak, he used to do audio for cars back in the day, would be a hilarious crossover!

@@cdevlin Wouldn't it be easier to walk a parking lot, find the same color and model car and then just clone that plate? Or do you mean as a targeted malicious act?

Id love to see y’all upgrade this car more, love both cars and tech. And seeing upgrades being done through the perspective of just updating an old daily driver to be a better daily, rather than another 1000hp civic build is a breath of fresh air. As someone who's done the radio a few times just because, Crutchfield is THE place to get the head unit because they have compatability checks and give good discounts on install kits and speakers
Overall thanks for showing off the DIY aspect and the value of replacing a head unit in a vehicle that has no reason in being upgraded if you don't need to!
PS: all of your wishlist is doable Plouffe 😉
@@littlejack59 yeah man totally doable, the likes of Kenwood head units will actually have multiple camera inputs you can use for this exact purpose. I have one on my own car as I installed a splitter and don't want to break it on parking stops in lots. Unfortunately model numbers for head units can be difficult as they change depending on what region you're in, but it's certainly doable that way and can even be done with a relay and a single camera input like the AX6000 shown in this video
@@littlejack59 would be an amazing opportunity for sure, but it's a long way to travel and there's surely some skilled guys in Canada as well that'd know what they're doing!
Why JVC though, literally a warehouse brand.
@@bksniperguy JVC head units are actually owned and operated by Kenwood. The head units they sell are literally the exact same, the chassis, parts and features are directly from Kenwood themselves, the only difference is that JVC maintains their own operating system that runs the head unit, albeit it's essentially just a reskin of Kenwood firmware nowadays, that's really the only major difference.
@Tuxicity Heya, who would you recommend in Auckland to do some audio and screen upgrades to a 2014 Lexus 450h, that don't break mechanical Warranty? Love to get extra bass, a 2nd 4k dash screen to mirror phone (not AA) and display rear and front parking cams. Shops either won't touch this, or try and charge $000's like RapidRadio, urgh.
Really enjoyed this upgrade, I was always asking how do I get the features in my old car I want without buying a 50k car. Absolutely brilliant
@@brytonmassie doubt simply swapping regular light bulbs for led ones will do any damage, since LEDs don't heat up that much
Usually you don't even need to solder, you just get a Honda to ISO adapter, then ISO to sony. I've done my Kia Rio and Mazda 2 all plug and play.
But this is going directly, with the adapter the signal doesn't get lost?
and if you're really afraid to solder (you shouldn't be, it's really easy) crimp connectors are really just fine for standard car audio stuff.
My older cars drive like a dream. Upgrades like this just make sense.
I absolutely love this type of content, especially "retrofiting" a car ! Please make other videos of this.
If you opt for the viofo dashcam, chuck £10 at the additional polarising lenses you wont regret it for night vision / evening glare
edit: i also made the ,mistake of putting the windscreen camera behind the rear view mirror so bought the bluetooth incident save button attached to the dash which works flawlessly for incident saves.
I drive a 6th gen mustang and my options are all expensive since the dash kit has to replicate the start button and chassis controls, HVAC and then the spot for the Head unit. If space is tight Pioneer recently introduced a modular system on a few models that allows for remote screen if the space tight
That said if you have the base screen it is probable you could upgrade to the 8 inch MyFordTouch or Sync 3 systems but the conversions are pretty involved. often requiring reprogramming of modules.
This is fantastic to see. I put a new media console and speakers in my 2000 Toyota Camry 3 years ago. With only 120k miles, it was the best upgrade that I’ve been recommending to people with older cars for years. Great video for the common man today!

The pleasure of repairing/upgrading something with your bare hands Is something hard to beat! Nice video.
Something to note is that generally its better to use a deutsch connector or other automotive specific wire joints than soldering. Itll probably be fine but solder joints have a tendency to not like large temperature changes and vibration.

To prevent having to solder and cut up the wiring there are adaptor harnesses for the radios so no cutting or anything just a straight plug and play
Just a heads up for all those attempting automotive wiring, its best practice to use crimp connectors (with proper crimping tools - NOT just mashing it with a pair of pliers) instead of soldering. Your solders might be fine but a proper crimp will be more reliable and outlast them every time :)
FYI, if you drill a hole in a body panel, be sure to hit the newly made unfinished edge with some paint.

Also, sound system installs are very easy in these cars. But the newer the car the harder it typically gets.
