  • With the radio shortage all shops across the country seem to be dealing with I found what just may be a good candidate for a large majority of people wanting a new head unit.
    In this video I go over features, measure high level output voltage, RCA output voltage, and discuss what I like and don't like about it.
    Is a Boss head unit in your future?

    Thanks for doing this. I just bought the DE9ACP to put in our Ford F450 cab on our class C RV. I looked at everything from cheaper than this all the way up through the expensive Kenwood‘s and pioneers. At the end of the day this seemed to offer the most bang for the buck. I agree with you about the high pass filter but there’s a couple of ways around that but it would mean adding additional equipment. Thanks again for your input. Very helpful.

    Very nice, in depth review. I enjoyed the time you took to walk through everything and demonstrate the functionality of this head unit. I'm on the fence about purchasing one for my older vehicle that I use as my daily driver, but watching this, it's almost to the tee of what 8m looking for.

    Very nice test! If you can edit down between 7 and 11 minutes you will get pushed by TH-cam recommendations. Could break a vid up like this into 2 to 3 vids. Setup. Test. Conclusion/ install review.

    • @BatdogGarage
      @BatdogGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Would you believe I shot this starting at 11 at night and did the test/upload in one go?
      As busy as I am working on stuff, I wanted to get this video out and forced myself to stay up and get it shot/uploaded. I didn't put much time into editing. Just wanted to get the video out.

    • @HolmesHobbies
      @HolmesHobbies 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I understand that for sure. Editing takes a lot of time, or it can. The 7 to 11 minute zone is goldilocks for TH-cam . Maybe just keep an eye on time while you are shooting and intentionally break it up so it's all one takes/no-edit blocks with mini intro outro recaps.
      A short vid of the testing and your conclusions would likely do well if views are your goal. 85 watt but only pushes 15ish at 4 ohm, or however you would interpret the numbers. People should know what's up!

    I installed a Boss BV800ACP in a customer car last month, never used them before but I have to say, I thought it was a decent radio. Front and rear preamps outputs were clean to 49 and sub was clean to max volume. Seemed to have some decent features as well, paired with a PAC RP4-FD11 for swc with no issues. Added a reverse cam she already had and worked perfectly. I called her last week for a follow up and she says all is good. I feel I could recommend them for a customer on a budget.

      @@quincybattle9458 In this case yes. it was a 2009 Ford Escape and in order for her to retain the Voice, OK and phone buttons on her steering wheel, I had to hard wire them to the PR4 since they were analog. This required getting into the steering column and wiring up the correct wires. In addition, one of the factory speaker wires needed to be re-pinned as it wasn't in the correct location on the harness. In most applications, you shouldn't have to splice into the wiring at all.

    Nice review. I had this exact model installed in my car with money I had gotten from some idiot hitting my car (my first ever accident!). My son has a Tesla w its big screen, so he thought that’s prob what I would like too. He took my car to a carstereo install place and had the BC10 put in. I absolutely loved it! I live in an apt building and park in a secured locked garage. About 6 weeks after I had my wonderful Boss 10”, I went to my car and there’s was a huge hole where it should have been. Now, my spot is in the furthest row from the entrance and I always, ALWAYS back in, long before backup cameras were a thing. So whoever ripped it out of my dash, was looking for something worth some quick cash. So, here it is , over a year later and I finally was just able to replace it, but this time I got the BC7 (229$) which has everything the 10 has, just doesn’t stick out. It fits flush-in as if it came with the car. I drive a 2008 Camry and the car was locked & both fobs were up 4 floors in my apt, so I’m still trying to figure out how they broke into it.
    My point is, if you are going to put a huge screen stereo in your car, make some kind of cover (in whatever the interior color of your dash is) and slip it over the screen when you park it anywhere, or even just throw a jacket over it…..If some jerk can get in to a secured locked garage & find something worth stealing, it’s possibly not gonna be there one of the times you return to your car. I’m still heartbroken that not only did my car get smashed up, (but actually fixed beautifully by the repair shop we used, although I was sans auto for 4 months) then got a really nice stereo and then .,,,poof…it’s gone. I replaced it with the same basic unit, just a few inches smaller so it fit into my original slot. My car came with a JBL system and the sound from my new stereo is outstanding. I can turn the car on, hit play on my Apple Music playlist and it connects automatically. I think android needs to be plugged in or something. Not sure. I know the installer said I’d need to plug my phone in to use the map, but that hasn’t been an Issue as yet.
    I feel much more comfortable that I’m not going to find another big stupid hole in my dash. I just wanted to add my experience to the conversation….hoping it keeps at least one person from feeling invaded like I did. Yes, they are really nice systems if installed correctly (my backseat fader didn’t work with the 10, but it does with the 7), just be aware that thieves look for stuff they can get in, get off & get out fast. Think of it as leaving an iPad or laptop in sight when you are parked somewhere. And, make no mistake, I loved this system, but I feel better having the in dash BC7.
    Good luck!

    So basically the radio is an anomaly! Cheap with good screen quality and modern features on a budget. Ok with sound running headunit power. Additionally has decent preamp sound quality for aftermarket amp/processor. Sounds and seems like a great value to me. The difference maker will be longevity. Great review!!!!

    Excellent review! I actually have this unit in my Denali and after spending thousands on an Alpine Halo 11 which is in my Tahoe and a Stinger Heigh 10 which is in my Escalade, I have to say the difference in sound quality and screen resolution does NOT warrant the huge price difference. The Boss head unit sounds great and the biggest downside is the lack of a HPF and maybe an HDMI input which I rarely use anyway. I like the Stinger because of the camera inputs for side view mirrors along with the front and rear camera input. This Boss Elite is actually a really good unit for the price. Again, excellent review!.. now if only Boss would put out some decent amplifiers!!

    • @demondmccray8582
      @demondmccray8582 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree....the price difference isn't worth it for what you get .$1000 more for an Alpine ,Kenwood, or Pioneer. They have better resolution and wireless Android Auto/CarPlay. Is that worth $1000 more? I added AAAD apps on my Android Auto and my system is an upgraded beast. If it gives me 3 years of use then I have won with this purchase $300!!!! Also I have it in a 2016 Toyota Tundra will JBL factory. It sounds better so I'm good with that despite what the author did comparing it to a $1500 unit.

    Very nice distortion and clipping test..
    Thankyou for that..
    I found you, actually seeking info if it had LP/HP filters or not.
    Obviously it doesnt..
    BUT !!
    You tested flat..
    Which would effect the internal amplifiers ability to cleanly produce.. especially at 1,40 Hz..
    1000Hz showed better results.. for the volume test, and the voltage peak (I think)
    You switched from front channel to sub channel in there somewhere..
    It seems to me (Im thinking)
    If you adjusted the mains EQ lower frequencies negitive.. it would effect the outputs in a positive way.
    But that setting may also effect sub output.. if the sub driving circuitry is not discreet.. most are connected.. meaning if you attenuate the main EQ lower feequencies, it also attenuates the sub signal at the same time..
    This would be a good test to find out if the sub circuit is discreet, signal taken before the EQ circuitry effect filters, or after..
    37 out of 50 max just means that if a person desires higher volumes, they have two options..
    A. Install 4ohm speakers for high output..
    B. Use the RCA outs to quad amplifier or 2×2.
    And .. if the sub signal is taken post EQ.. then high pass crossover is necessary on the quad or 2×2 amps.. to filter the low frequencies out..
    Again.. pending just how much a person really needs or wants from their system.. is directly related to amp selection and power output, and ofcoarse speaker capacity in wattage ratings, frequency reaponses, ect.
    High level passive crossovers are also an option.
    Ways to skin a cat?
    Again.. thankyou for this video.. way more then I expected to ever find on the net for this unit, or any other really..
    Your efforts are greatly appreciated out here..
    Having seen your video.. I think Ive decided its worth the money as well..
    I was concerned about the filters too.. but its all good.. full range is workable.. as long as the sub fikters work as designed with no added noise.
    Speaking of noise..
    Perhaps your voltage readings would have peaked with "loudness" circuit on?
    But perhaps also effected the distortion and clipping.. in a negitive way.
    No load on the amps? (No speakers?)
    Doesnt that have an effect on the performence of the amps full closed circuit regulation?

    So run a 4ch amp with HPF and set gains for Max volume at 44 and it’s decent?

    • @BatdogGarage
      @BatdogGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James, if you use pre-out only, yes - but volume level 43 (see below for explanation). There's no HPF for the front/rear channels. I'd also turn off the internal subwoofer LPF and use the X-over on the amp (or processor).
      A quick run-down of max volume on the pre-outs:
      The front/rear pre-outs, when measured with the 1KHz -0dB track will go to full volume (50 on the head unit) and have clean output at 3.46 Volts.
      The front/rear pre-outs, when measured with the 40Hz -0dB track will have clean output up to volume level 44 at 3.3 Volts.
      The sub channel has a max clean output at volume level 43 with the 40Hz -0dB track. At that volume level you have 3V on the Sub pre-outs.
      Based on those numbers I'd stick to a max volume level of 43. This will ensure that none of the pre-outs clip.
      This head unit clips at 40Hz before 1KHz no matter if you're using the pre-outs or high-level outputs. The high-level outputs also clip before the RCA pre-outs. Volume level 42 at with the -0dB 1KHz signal and volume level 37 with the -0dB 40Hz signal.
      So max, un-clipped volume on the high-level outputs is 37.

    Boss over the years have not been terrible gear. They just lied about the power levels. That being said you are still getting a decent value for the dollar. A Boss 5000-watt max will do about 1500 rms and for just a couple of hundred bucks is a good value. Back in my day you paid a dollar plus a watt and in some cases pay more than that now. Is it the best gear out there? Hell No! Is there a lot worse? Hell Yeah! So as always do your research. BTW I would have liked to have seen the Line out voltage with the internal amp turned off.

      @@mattroadfeldt9012 I use it fairly often. Especially when I work on vehicles that other installers/shops have worked with. I'll use it to check polarity of existing wiring, as an O-scope to find max clean output level (as shown here), and the RTA feature is great for measuring outputs of factory speaker wiring so you know exactly what kind of signal you have to work with.
      It has two line inputs, two mics, and a built-in signal generator (which I use for the polarity check function).
      Overall it's a great little all-in one tool with six functions, but RTA, O-scope, and polarity are the three main functions I use.

      Yes. CarPlay is dictated by Apple. If Apple allows the app to be used for CarPlay you can use it. Spotify, Pandora, and such are usable.

      Noted. I'm not the best at editing video.
      In this instance, I did a thorough overview and test of a cheap radio that has the look and and some features of a more expensive unit. I wanted to show complete testing of both high and low level outputs as well as testing the claimed specs as far as output levels. I mean, it's a Boss.
      As you saw in the video I couldn't simply measure the front/rear channels at 1KHz and the sub channel at 40Hz because there's no high pass filter on the front/rear channels.
      The radio's internal amp clips before the line level outputs and, again it's different at 40Hz and 1KHz on the line level as well.
      I also test the 85 Watt per channel claim.

      @@ebaysnipa it is what it is.
      If you've watched other videos, I explain that I'd rather go into detail than leave info out. The videos carry a bit long, but I've found that it doesn't matter if the video is 10 minutes or 40, people skip through them.
      For those that want to see the full test, the full test is there.
