In we have a 2017 Mini Cooper for a ‘non-start’- so the customer says. Upon arrival, we noticed straight away that there is something more than the car not starting. The stench of the car can be sniffed from 10 miles away, and this scent was very familiar (smells like John). We found plethora of faults that can be traced back to this fault. Stick around and find out!

Greetings from Scotland! Oh yeah, seen a few of these in my time! I've removed gearboxes where the bellhousing was full of clutch lining, like shredded wheat! 3 possibilities - 1, fair wear and tear (IF it had a huge mileage!) 2, clutch thrust bearing stuck on it's guide tube (unlikely in a fairly new car) OR simply clutch riding, causing clutch slip and a LOT of heat (like the pressure plate is cracked due to massive heat!) and I would stake my big toe - THAT caused all this damage for sure! Advise the customer to buy an automatic! 😂
You often see people sitting on a slight uphill at traffic lights are too lazy to apply handbrake so just sit slipping the clutch until light changes - SO, SO bad for the clutch!!! Use the foot brake or better still apply handbrake, it's FREE!

I'm guessing the slave cylinder could be out of adjustment, with that amount of heat it must have been slipping at motorway speeds. Maybe the clutch was worn due to the customer riding it and then it kept slipping permanently until it turned into metal goop.

Why do people still clutch ride? Back in the early eighties when I first started driving there was no auto hold/brake on any of the cars so on a hill I used to slip the clutch waiting for the traffic to pass, but not for very long. Also, I used to use the clutch to slow the car down when approaching the roundabout. Despite all that I have never destroyed a clutch. This is something else.

One key point on a clutch with organic facings, like this one. As the temperature increases the friction coefficient is reduced, the higher the temperature gets the less able the facing is to recover the original fruction coefficient, basically it's a spiral of decline, heat is your enemy. I used to be M.D. of a Luk factory.

Had a Ford 1/2 pickup towed in once. Customer said he was driving alone and it just quit going. The disc lining was just a pile if dust and debris in the bell housing. He said when it stopped on the side of the road that there was fire under the truck. That was the rubber boot on the clutch lever burning off from the heat of the flywheel. The flywheel was blue and the crankshaft flange and transmission input had some blueing also. This was about 1985 when the OEMs had added overdrive to a 3 spd trans for economy. Previous vehicles the owner had, he would shift into high gear at 80 KPH, so he was doing that with this truck. The low RPM with a 400CID engine would hammer the input shaft bearing in the transmission. When I called the Ford dealer to get a new input bearing, seal and gasket with the clutch assembly and pilot bearing, they knew whose truck I was working on. They had replaced the input bearing 4 times previously.
The owner did not want to pay the core deposit on the clutch. A couple of weeks later he came in and was annoyed he was not getting it back. A few days later he was in again wanting the burned clutch to take to an insurance adjuster. He had talked the person into the idea the fire (of the boot) burning off had burned the clutch out. When he left we had a good laugh at that concept.

It's possible the customer isn't actually lying about riding the clutch, if the clutch was starting to slip and the customer continued to drive the car the clutch would get extremely hot, probably more so than riding the clutch, I've seen ring gears fall off the flywheel due to the heat generated by a slipping clutch (they tend to be an interference fit and are heated to get them on the flywheel (or the flywheel is chilled) once they return to normal temperature they won't come apart(without heating) outcome is the same excess heat causing further damage
