    In we have a 2004 BMW X5 30i with a juddering/clunking/heavy changing automatic transmission. Customer states that he’s brought the vehicle to many garages without a fix. He’s unfortunately spent close £1000 as the other garages were just replacing parts that doesn’t need to be replaced. To our surprise, it was a very easy fix if diagnosed correctly! Stick around to find out!

    BMW Technical Information recommends using gasket sealant only around the half moon shapes where the main gasket changes direction at the front and rear of the cover and between the Vanos.
    I have done a few of these and use Blue Hylomar sealant at these locations. It is also required to fit new round rubber seals that sit under the cover retaining bolts, there are 15 of them. Like aged gaskets they go hard and will not compress to obtain a good seal for the cover, hence fitting new ones. I use Elring gasket kits that include the round rubber seals. Never had any fail from the ones I have done. Always check the plastic cover for cracks, I had one that was crumbling around plug well No4 and cracked. That was allowing unmetered air in and affecting the fuel trims. Replacement used cover had to be fitted to cure the problem. All down to plastic and rubber age and repeated heat cycles taking their toll.

      @@marklittler784 That was certainly a common practice when I trained as a mechanic in the 1960's, but with the electronic & computerised systems fitted to cars during and after the 1980's and the diagnostic equipment that came with it, I feel that many mechanics (technicians) might not have had enough training that took them away from the oily rag practices than went before. Only a personal observation that's sort of confirmed by Mat and his team.

      @@pda49184 To be fair he rightly guessed the problem before it showed the same issue with the scan tool. So experience definitely trumps tech imo. The tech most times helps you confirm or deny your educated suspicions, it points you in a relevant direction. It doesn't always get it right, electrical harness/ecu module problems can lead you right down a rabbit hole.

The couple tests that are usually required is 12v reference while using the sensor circuit ground as pretty much everything is ground switched controlled and continuity of the ground circuit also.

      The engine bay fumes should not penetrate the cabin by design of the cabin sealing system. At the rear of the engine bay upper should be a rubber extrusion seal between hood and leaf screen the width of the hood opening, This prevents fumes from getting into the gap at the rear edge of the hood and then into the leaf screen vents and from there into the HVAC which conditions the cabin. Any fumes should leave the car through the bottom of the engine bay or through the wheel arches. As part of routine maintenance all cabin seals should be lubricated at least yearly with a rubber conditioner such as Armor All Protectant (in a test I ran this is the best product however most car manufacturers market their own brand). If you have a convertible roof do this more often on all of the seals to clean and lubricate them and help avoid leaks. Some hatchback cars have a complex sealing surface and a protectant/lubricant again can help stop leaks. Modern cars, even economy cars, are sealed so much better than compared to the 1970s.
      I really enjoy your videos and the crack with John and I look forward to seeing new ones just released. Thankyou for all that you do keeping people on the road.

    I had my 1999 e46 323i transmission rebuilt in 2019 and after I got it back it has a harsh shift when going into drive, the condition has not changed since then, once in gear it drives and shifts good but when the weather goes past 30 deg and the aircon is on there are issues with changes when kicking down. I will check my maf sensor as I had no reason to check as car ran well.

    if both signals are the same -- as in maf copys throttle -- then why dont they use the one sensor/signal to run both ? just a thought :)

    • @themarvelousvlog
      @themarvelousvlog  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, it doesn’t directly copy the throttle.
      MAF’s signal is based on the volume of air that’s going in to the system whilst throttle is based on the user’s input angle on the throttle pedal.
      I graphed MAF vs Engine Speed. The engine speed is based on the reading from the crankshaft and doesn’t directly correspond to how much air is going in to the system.
      Hope that helps ☺️

    Hello mate.Is there some way i can pay you for an opinion ? It's just binding front brakes,mostly the left, and i've replaced both calipers & pads & flexi hoses & the master cylinder.Car pulls to the left even though i've had alignment done & VCDS lite shows front left wheel speed sensor intermittent fault.It's just a 2003 Fabia diesel and not a great loss if i have to dump it but i don't like the idea of scrapping an otherwise perfectly useable car.Happy to pay you upfront for an opinion if you do that sort of thing but not a problem if you don't i'll still be a subscriber cause i enjoy your content.

    • @themarvelousvlog
      @themarvelousvlog  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      By watching my video you’ve already paid pal. Have you tried cleaning your pad carrier, renewing the brake pins? They should easily slide in and out- same when installing your brake pads? Wheel bearing could also be in play here so I’d check that too. ABS light on?
      This is my ‘paid opinion’. I have to see it in person to truly find out what’s wrong with it, and that will unfortunately cost you the real £

      Unplug the sensor and see if the physical fault ( not the code ) disappears. If it does possible bearing or sensor issue. If not, possible module .. good luck
