Took my wife’s Aygo to a local garage that ‘ fits things quickly’😉. Major rattle in the exhaust, got quoted entire new exhaust and cat, minimum of £950. Took it home, did some reading, changed back box myself for £60 in 20 minutes. That’s 2 years and 2 MOT’s ago, been fine ever since.
an elderly friend took her car to a garage that fits things quickly a couple of years ago, she wanted her front brakes checking as the mot was due soon. She came out with a quote for nearly £600. I looked at the quote, they said she needed pads, discs, calipers and a fluid change, utterly ridiculous. A recommended mobile mechanic came out and fitted some new pads for about £80, car went through mot. I was incensed that a major national company would try and defraud an elderly widow.
My ex had her C4 Cactus fail an MOT on emissions & the garage quoted £1100 for supply & fit DPF. They didn't provide the 1st fail emissions test results, but told her to have it serviced by them & give it a good run (despite the fact she did above average mileage & used high speed dual carriageways daily). It failed a 2nd time & after arguing they eventually provided a printout of the emissions test & they did the wrong type for a diesel 🤦🏾♂️ Best part was, a brand new DPF from Citroen was £550 & they quoted 1hr to change, so a sub-£1k job. Every other garage I spoke to said 1) it wouldn't need a DPF given it's age/mileage & 2) that it was a Citroen only part but easy to replace due to easy access in the engine bay. When I took it back the 3rd time, having done nothing to it, it miraculously passed when I stood & watched them emissions test it. In short, sadly, most garages are dodgy 🤷🏽♂️
Took mine to same outfit a few years ago as the handbrake wasn't holding the car. My usual garage were too busy and I needed it for a meeting next day. Can't remember how much but it was a few hundred quid to sort it. Next day on a slight incline I parked up and the car still rolled with the handbrake on. Took it back and they weren't interested, so I took it to my usual garage and they put it on the ramp for free. They said that new parts had been used but that the fit was bad. I phoned the garage and they fobbed me off, so I contacted an area manager online. I didn't know it at the time but that business is a franchise. They do have to maintain standards so the area manager asked me to take it to a different one and they would inspect and correct the work at no cost, which they did. I also questioned the amount I paid for the original repair as it was high. The manager asked me to get 2 independent quotes for the same repair which I did. He averaged them and then reimbursed me the difference which I think was about £150. I don't know what happened to the first garage and whether they were reprimanded in any way, or how the second outfit got reimbursed for their final fix. So if you do get stuck in a situation with that firm, contact an area manager.
This is a slam-dunk for a full refund. If the garage refuse then go to trading standards. Crooks! And the icing on the cake they left the seat as a dangerous MOT fail.
Best to take advice and take the garage to court for misleading the customer and damaging his property. They will more than likely settle out of court as bad publicity would cost them £1000,s more
Some of these multi chain repair shops seem to employ people who do not really know what they are doing and are pressured into sell, sell, sell not always to the benefit of the customer

Had to get an exhaust fitted urgently about four or five years ago. Ended up going to Quack Fit. They gave me the old spiel, "Complete exhaust and catalytic converter needs changing mate". Cost me 500 sovs. Immediately after having it fitted, whenever i went over a speed bump it sounded like the exhaust backbox was rubbing against the chassis, making a horrible noise . I took it back and told them . They put it up on the ramp and said they couldn't see anything wrong 🙄. I put up with the noise for a couple of years until it needed replacing again. belter one for you, my mates mam, had a F reg mini, that the exhaust rubber failed on. The recovery didn't have one spare at the time, so he said Kwik fit is only up the road. So they recovered the car there. Kwik fit wanted to charge her for to replace the Cat. She went back to the recovery bloke, who waited with her, and told him, He said hang on! Its only needs a new rubber that's! and it doesn't have a Cat on it at all, due to the age of it. He said i tell you what lads, how about you take it back off there, and we will take it else where. They found another garage, and they charged her something daft like a £ 10 and did changed all the rubbers on the exhaust, She did tell them about kwikfit. The garage lads said they are well known for it sadly, and for charging customers and not doing services. Which i have read a few times on the car forums, and they have caught Kwik Fit out many times. Even a watch dog caught 10 stores out of kwik fits, put 10 cars in for service, and other bit and not one was touched.
Few years back now.. Took my Citroen Ax Gt for a brake check at a Fast fit garage.. Front brakes fine, but they couldn't get the rear drums off.. Told me I'd need new hubs and complete rear brakes etc.. I declined and took it to a regular garage.. They got the drums off, skimmed them and fitted new shoes!! Job done!!
National chains can sometimes be worse especially for MOT's but they do tend to throw parts at stuff because they aren't the ones paying, it helps to have a little mechanical knowledge, or you will pay.
They are fitters which means they fit new parts .Mechanics will repair existing problems. Last thing they want to do is just fit a new part.A good Mechanic will even give you the old part.
Things like this absolutely boils my pi$$. After that it was Haynes manuals and friends advice, later TH-cam and I’ve been working on my cars ever since. Garages like that should be named and reported for fraud. Also nice to see younger generation using oscillograph, keep up the good work.

Proper mechaniques! Well done guys your systematic analysis and then subsequent investigation into the problem shows you know your game. I would take the fast fit garage to court and show this video as evidence and Sue the arse off the bastards.
Nice work! Your basic troubleshooting methods are foolproof and easy to follow. They just takes time, which is sadly something that lots of garages don't want to spend.
If you sprayed brake cleaner down the inlet in the first place and it started, that would have saved you all that time hooking it up to the diag comp and checking the crank and cam sensors. Then you would know it was fuel delivery problem.
So.. 3 take homes for me.. 1)That Garage should be named and shamed. They lied, cheated, caused damage, and still couldn't do the job right.. 2) I suspect that the owner might not be servicing that car as regularly as they should be. 3) This is great channel. Really decent, enjoyable content. Great work.. Subscribed!

One garage charged a friend of mine silly money to fix his car, which they didn't fix. Then wanted a further £600 after telling him they couldn't fix it and they didn't want to do any further work to it. He couldn't speak English well so i went and translated for him. I advised him to tell them to keep the car and not to pay a single penny more as he had already paid too much and he simply couldn't afford it. They didn't want the car taking up space in their garage so they gave it back to him without paying the further £600. Some garages are pure con artist's.
obviously don't name and shame them yourself in the video as you'd be opening yourself up to a potential whole world of legal pain, libel etc, but get the customer to leave them a bad review on their google maps business pin and include photos of the damage they did to his seat and mountings, also the pics of the clearly-not-new fuel pump. At least then if other customers can see the evidence on the reviews they can make their own mind up before potentially experiencing the same fradulent practices.
Nice job again lads, seems someone has been stealing and selling the parts from that quick fit place. The day I take my car to one of them is the day pigs fly.
@10:47 fuel pump o-ring has been assembled incorrectly being placed under the spacer resulting in poor fuel pressure. Have seen this issue time and time again after having to correct apprentice fuckups
Bro, you are right not to name and shame, sometimes customers have a go themselves and make a terrible mess, get confused and then tell you it was kwik fit or something! We have had it before many times although tbf your customer seems legit here
That’s why people don’t trust Garages you’re best doing it yourself if you’ve got the skills .. I’ve got a LandRover discovery I was quoted £600 to replace my timing belt .. I just paid for the parts and did it my self easy job after I watched a video on TH-cam.. I also replaced the fan belt and tensioner pulley easy I was quoted £180 for that to be done so I’ve saved myself some cash plus I’ve learned something new
Hey guys nice fix, just for your own information, the fuel pump would never build pressure properly, if you look at frame 10:47 you can clearly see the fuel pump o ring has been assembled incorrectly, white sleeve goes on before the oring to stop the oring rolling down the pump and not sealing properly, probably could have cleaned this and put a new filter in and got this car running if the fuel pump tested ok :)
I like your methods of diagnosis. I worked with a vehicle electrician , he was a genius, but saying that, he refused to work on cars over 2015.. to conclude, you 2 brothers are new blood in the field, keep ip the good work, you deserve recognition
Owner should go back to the garage and ask them for a copy of the supply invoice for the pump parts they fitted, if one is available he should call the supplier and see if it has been returned to them. Though you have provided sufficient evidence that nothing in the fuel pump unit has been replaced and then take them to small claims court. Clearly complain to the Head Office or CEO of the business first.
Firstly... brand new second hand? And that is the longest way to diagnose a fuel pump... Maybe "they" took the fuel tank off from under the car.. or did they???? Have you ever gone low tech with an avo and an amp clamp test voltage at the fuel pump then use the clamp around the live or earth to check current draw...
This video came up as a recommendation and I'm glad I watched it. You guys are like Edd China ... super knowledgeable and explain the process in detail.
Nice no bullshit video, informative and helpful. respect to you guys.

I was charged $1,100 for a new $200 battery and a $200 alternator. It didn't fix the problem. I did some research and it turned out to be a $26 main fuel relay. It took me less than a minute. PS: always ask for the replaced part back.
I had a similar one to this a few years ago, A ford focus that would not start at times & pointed out to the girl I know that it was the tank pump failing,(common fault) after lifting the rear seat & giving the top of the pump a love tap!. As she wasn't local to me she went to some local mobile mechanic, Went to see her a few weeks later & the car was still not running despite of a pump being fitted, So I took up the rear seat to have a look & found a horror show, the floor pan had been totally butchered & bent to buggery probably with a blunt chisel & hammer, & then noticed that the idiot had fitted the fuel pipes wrong even though the connectors are colour coded!, So swapped the pipes over & away it went, Then made up a rather crude plate to cover the butchered hole & screwed it down, I don't think she will be calling on his services again!.
I went to a Garage for a Full service and Next Day an MOT. The MOT Failed on half the things they "Remediated" during the service. SAME GARAGE! The owner agreed and discounted all the repairs but if not....
A garage tried to scam me like this once, but it was on a motorbike. They basically tore the engine to pieces, left it that way, and said it would cost nearly 2k to fix it. An entire replacement engine cost me £500.
i took my car to a car repair chain as the rear brake had seized on as the rear brake shoe had come off and jammed in, they immediately tried to rack up the bill by telling me the tyres would need replacing as well, i refused and said just sort the brakes, on picking up the car and driving off it felt wrong i checked round the car and found that the front left tyre had been let down in and attempt to cause it to come off the rim, also a 3"" long cut had appeared in the cv boot which had been replaced 3 months before the brake problems, the cut was clean and looked to have been done with a stanley knife, this was found at the mot station 4 months later which caused a fail however i asked about the state of the tyres and they said they had plenty of tread left and they had passed.
Never goto a quick fitting garage. Except for perhaps tyres. Find a good local mechanic you can learn to trust. I have 4 cars between myself n the wife. All of them are looked after by the same garage.
the diag machine says 12:49 at the start of the video. it was dark at the end. longest fuel pump swap ive ever seen. The book time on that should of been half it was all stripped out ready to go.
Well done. Back in 2010, I was asked by a work colleague if I could fix his car, a 2004 Land Rover Freelander. The fault was the fuel pump and I replaced it. The car started immediately. I am not a qualified mechanic!
Great job guys, one thing that I would have done before changing the pump would have been to do a voltage drop test on the main 12v pump feed wire, because of the age of the car, the cable could be corroding inside the installation.
Smoke test..?? Vacuum leak won’t make it start, the first thing after a scan (battery must be on tender) is check fuel pressure on the rail…. Back street back yard workshops are even worse than a “fast fit” workshop…. Back probing isn’t through the front of the plug, and you always leave it connected.. Amateur hour..!!
Engine needs Spark and fuel, when you turn ignition on you hear a buzz from fuel pump to pressurise the fuel tank for a few seconds. Crankshaft sensor is crucial for timing with camshaft!!!!
13:28 Was the original garage reported to trading standards? I personally would never deal with these large national companies. Use a reliable independent.
Great video !! Great you showing people that there are good mechs like us out there as well as bad . Just shame that you cant shame them because people have a right to know . Top vid guys !!
I got an audi tt with thick grey smoke and a stiff auto transmission. Garage says I should sell it because it's too expensive to repair, but I really like it. Think you could fix it?
I find your videos very interesting and informative, even though I have over 40 years in the trade myself. When I first started out in my career, the vehicles were so much more simpler and straightforward. The vehicles that you work on are so restrictive in terms of access and have a multitude of sensors etc. I noticed that you also complain of a sore back and I’m afraid it goes with the job, all you can do is protect it as much as possible. You have become a very experienced technician and have great diagnostic skills, which I think is one of the most important aspects of the job. Keep up the good work dude and I look forward to seeing more of your next videos 👍
Thank you very much mate. Huge compliment that! I think I’m gunna start wearing belt soon, just to protect my back- I know it will catch up on me if I don’t
You’re very welcome dude👍 Like you, I did a lot of bodybuilding back in the day and I remember doing ‘stiff legged dead lifts’ on reflection it might not have been the best exercise to include in my legs and thigh routine?? I think if you keep your core back muscles strong, it may well help you over the long term, and like you said a good quality belt would be beneficial. I served for 30 years in the military and 10 years with the fire service, so I don’t just dish out compliments unless you’re on top of your game. One of the biggest ball aches for us mechanics was a clutch change on the old Land Rovers, all the seats in the front had to come out and then a jack crane to lift it clear of the engine. The easiest clutch change was on the early Vauxhall Cavaliers, 20mins start to finish 👍
Not quite misdiagnosed of my Mercedes but cost going to the dealer but that is common knowledge. Dealer charging £355.00 to sort satnav as satellites could not be found. Told them it was the antenna but they wanted to put through diagnostics. Local garage changed antenna and charged £104.00 Satnav working again !!!
Another great vid from Marvelous, that garage should be closed down , just what else have they done (or not done) to other customers vehicles , one of these days a serious problem will arise involving someone’s life , I hate to say this hence it needs heavily regulating . Oh BTW I did wonder if you would also end up with the Euro tab III too & you have , do you still use the 919 mate ?
These quick/fast fit type garages their first priority is profit and all their employees wages are based on profit / commission and as long as they work on this principle things will never change !
You guys are so passionate about your job, always taking on a challenge and making entertaining videos. Ever getting a "brand new, second hand part" hahaha
Time for a letter before claim and then if they don’t make an agreement. sue them through a small claims. As others have said if the owner paid using a credit card, go to the CC and ask for a part 75 claim. Go Get them …. good luck
I hate scammer garages, I’ll do somethings myself if I have the tools and time, been scammed by a Nissan dealership, then I used a great independent garage but he retired, the place he recommended were f’ing awful, charged me £50 to tell me the rear drum was sticking and couldn’t get the cover off which I already knew 🙄 prior to that I asked for a service, for the last 15 years I’ve always run my cars on full synth oil, as I might change it every 2 or 3 years depending on millage I do, asked this place for a basic service and they said no because I had my own oil their excuse was they wouldn’t give a warranty on customer supplied parts. I am fairly mechanically minded as I have had a couple of track cars and a collection of bikes, I am tempted to get a scissor lift at home and do most of my own work going forward.
I got a free MOT with a major fast-fit garage through my insurance. During the MOT they literally cut one of my brake lines, failed the MOT, and tried to book me in for the repair. We know they cut the brake lines because my mechanic, literally the weekend before, had checked all the brakes after replacing the pads. I wouldn't touch them with yours.
Unreal. This is why I try to diagnose my car myself. I learn a lot in the process and it tends to cut down on the bill. I had the exact same issue, fuel pump gone. Such an easy fix as well... £900? You're having a LAUGH.
Brother’s and sisters stay away from In n Out as much as possible 🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️learnt my lesson after that 💯

I like your systematic fault-finding. It's how it should be done!! 😀
Good to see your honesty and fairness with customers. Hope your business goes well.
The pump module was benched off camera and it was unfortunately weak 😅
These two Guys are proper mechanics. Good luck to them❤
Thank you!
I like your methods of diagnosis. I worked with a vehicle electrician , he was a genius, but saying that, he refused to work on cars over 2015..
to conclude, you 2 brothers are new blood in the field, keep ip the good work, you deserve recognition
Left the trade in 2008, it's amazing what tools and diagnostic equipment are available now, and at very reasonable prices 👌🏻
He’s already got his money back- thankfully!
Firstly... brand new second hand?
I wish you guys lived near me in Chesterfield and because you are so honest, you would make a fortune from satisfied customers.
*Soon as you first trued to start it you could tell it was a fuel issue . Good fix*
You could test the circuit if fuel coming to injectors by removing the main pipe to it if it's safe to do so before removing the pump
Job well done ... Getting a genuine toyota used assembly is the best way to go. Cant trust counterfit pumps online.
Great work Guy's.. I guess the customer will stick to you in future.. Hope he gets a refund of at least the price of the none replaced fuel pump.
the diag machine says 12:49 at the start of the video. it was dark at the end. longest fuel pump swap ive ever seen.
Brilliant job guys.
Great job guys, one thing that I would have done before changing the pump would have been to do a voltage drop test on the main 12v pump feed wire, because of the age of the car, the cable could be corroding inside the installation.
Yeah they shouldn’t be allowed to get away with that !! Top work guys.
This is why I only go to one mechanic I know and trust. Can't trust chain shops.
Wow!!! They got a brand new, second hand pump!!!
Who doesn’t like a brand new second-hand part? 😂
Fuel pumps and injectors fail because people drive short trips, have constant almost empty tanks
Engine needs Spark and fuel, when you turn ignition on you hear a buzz from fuel pump to pressurise the fuel tank for a few seconds.
Crankshaft sensor is crucial for timing with camshaft!!!!
Good lads.... Honest hard working experts..... Keep on fixing fellas
13:28 Was the original garage reported to trading standards? I personally would never deal with these large national companies. Use a reliable independent.
Great video !! Great you showing people that there are good mechs like us out there as well as bad . Just shame that you cant shame them because people have a right to know . Top vid guys !!
11:05 there is no such thing as a Brand New 2nd Hand Pump.
There is now 😂
You are a good and honest mechanic which is very rare these days. God bless you! Wish you were in the Winchester area!
Thank you!
We do cover Winchester but call-out fee will be extortionate
Just wish there were more people with yourself!! Keep the good work up mate!!👍🏻
I ve experience the same, find a trusted mechanic is my advice !
Very thorough job boys, well done!
These quick/fast fit type garages their first priority is profit and all their employees wages are based on profit / commission and as long as they work on this principle things will never change !
need to learn the car has to be stopted before putting it in reverse
You should be using a high current test light to test test power feed. Good Voltage doesn't mean good current flow
I will keep this in mind for sure!
Basics pull a plug does it spark? Place tissue over plug oil, does it get wet with fuel?
Well done boys, great to see honest guys doing a proper job🎉 shame on the garage that charged £900 !!!! Scumbags😮
dunno about u, but i always start with fuel. fastest thing to check first is normally fuel. pop a hose, spray.
that looks like the sort of hatchet job i got at my ex garage recently. more damage caused than it went in for.
There’s more coming mate haha 😂
@@themarvelousvlog yep, unfortunately they are out there.
You guys are so passionate about your job, always taking on a challenge and making entertaining videos. Ever getting a "brand new, second hand part" hahaha
We do what we do because we love it. It doesn’t feel like work to us
Will that not hydrolock the engine by spraying the brake cleaner through the air intake system and cranking the ignition on.
Time for a letter before claim and then if they don’t make an agreement. sue them through a small claims. As others have said if the owner paid using a credit card, go to the CC and ask for a part 75 claim. Go Get them …. good luck
In the U.K. we don’t call garages shops. Just so you understand.
Did you also sort out the rear seat bolts? Seems like it would be dangerous to leave in that condition?
Hope the customer is taking them to court.
This happened to me in Washington Tyne And Wear, a garage in Concord Ripped me off of £500.. There is nothing you can do.
FLUSH OUT TANK AS IT MUST HAVE MUCK / WATER IN.
Where's John.
Hope the owner names n shames them and ask for money back. .Well done Boys. Need more like you. 👍
Had EXACTLY the same issue with a Seat Ibiza
£900 including their diagnostic apparently 😂
