  • In this video I go over the differences between a early base model C6 corvette, and the Z51. This is not exhaustive, and doesn't mention the transmission and rear end gearing options you can get on the Z51, but gives you an overview of where things are and the differences if you wanted to upgrade with some Z51 parts on your base car.

You forgot to mention the TRANSMISSION is different, the Z51 has a shorter 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear inside the manual transmission (autocross), regardless of the final drive ring/pinion.

I have a 2005 Z 51, do you know whether the gear shift throw is shorter on a Z 51 manual gear box ?

Thank you! I'm looking forward to doing one of the C8 when it comes out, although I doubt I'll have it in pieces like that one lol.

Interesting thing that I found out. I was doing an oil change on my wife's 08 non z51 base and noticed that where the oil cooling lines would come out there is a catalytic converter sitting just inches away. Doesnt really make much sence to have something that gets to 500-800 degrees or 1200 under heavy load just in close proximity to a cooling line is. Seeing that the corvette is a car that has alot of engineering, makes you wonder why they didn't put a heat shield there.

That’s a fantastic video. Very informative! I’m considering switching out from a Boxster into a vette

Thanks Alfred! Haven't driven a Boxster to know what you can expect, but it's hard to go wrong in a vette.

I’ve test drove a few corvettes before (both base and z51 versions), and as a comparison, the handling on the boxsters (I’ve had 2) are sweeter, more intuitive and communicative. They just handle like a dream. What the corvette brings is power!!! Handling is decent but it comes with so much power...... I’m waiting for spring/summer to probably pull the trigger

I think you shouldn't have any trouble finding one. I know this is anecdotal, but I was looking at C7s and there has been a surge of inventory because of C8 announcement, so im sure that'll make the market improve on the buying side.

Great video! I did the Z06 sway bar front/back, 13.4" Z51 2 piece rotors with color matched Z51 Caliper brakets, On my way to do the DeWitts Oil/Trans Radiator with dual fan system. Do you think its worth it to do the Z51 radiator or go with the stock and add external oil cooler?

Does an '06 Corvette Z51 with manual transmission have a transmission cooler? Could there be a leak that shows up just behind and inside the left front tire?

Z51 also has a greasable rear suspension knuckle, don’t forget to give it an occasional shot of grease

So it wouldn’t take much to upgrade a base corvette? I’ve got a 2012 1lt

If you just want the braking and suspension components, like the sway bar, stiffer springs, shocks, and larger rotor I say go for it (that's what I did). They offer a good balance between handling and street, and it's a less expensive option over Z06 parts.
The transmission cooler and oil cooler are a little more involved, earlier years have them integrated in the radiator. Power steering cooler is easy and replaces the "figure 8" lines.
I should be making a new video on replacing the sway bars soon. Its a quick install and you'll feel the difference!
